Search bar and net search does not work

I run mac os x mavericks
I updated recently to Firefox 29.0
for the last 2 days or so I can't search the net with google anymore If I type a frase or word (Flickr, VW beetle) into the searchbar and have google as search engin selected I get the error message "Firefox can't establish a connection to the server at www.google.com."
If I type into the address bar www.google.com same thing BUT if I type in www.google.co.za or .de or. uk it is fine.
Also all my old bookmarks are working fine.
However if I try to search with 'bing or yahoo FF askes to redirect and brings me to a malware flashplayer pro site with a windows uplication. I'm not able to ignore it!
Please help as i do not want to use google crome or safary as my default browser

It sounds like you have a third party program that has taken over your search engine, home page, and/or the default new tab page. Fortunately, this can be remedied easily:
# At the top of the Firefox window, click on the Firefox button (Tools menu in Windows XP), and then click Add-ons. The Add-ons Manager tab will open.
# In the Add-ons Manager tab, select the Extensions panel.
# Select the toolbar you wish to remove.
# Click the remove button.
# Click "Restart now" if it pops up. Your tabs will be saved and restored after the restart.
After Firefox restarts, install the [https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/searchreset/ Search Reset Tool]. This will remove the rest of the traces of this program from your Firefox.
For further information, please read [[Remove a toolbar that has taken over your Firefox search or home page]].

Solution update: Disabled XULRunner 1.9.1 extension from Add-ons > Extensions. Problem solved.

Do those entries have a yellow star at the far right?
If they have then they are bookmarks. You can remove them if you open that link and click the star to open the Edit This Bookmark dialog and click the Remove button in that dialog.

- After charging for 1/2 hour or so, does iTunes see the iPod? If yes, restore the iPod from backup.

I am trying to open a service request and the site does not work with ANY browser. I get the page https://getsupport.apple.com/GetParts.action which says "Send in for service. We just need a little more information." The continue button does not work. I've seen this problem before trying to file support requests. It's as if Apple simply does not want you to create requests.

I just went through several screens and had no problems. Try clearing your browser's cache and/or history.

Let's try a standalone Apple Application Support install. It still might not install, but fingers crossed any error messages will give us a better idea of the underlying cause of the issue.
Download and save a copy of the iTunesSetup.exe (or iTunes64setup.exe) installer file to your hard drive:

Right-click the iTunesSetup.exe (or iTunes64Setup.exe), and select "Extract to iTunesSetup" (or "Extract to iTunes64Setup"). WinRAR will expand the contents of the file into a folder called "iTunesSetup" (or "iTunes64Setup").
Go into the folder and doubleclick the AppleApplicationSupport.msi to do a standalone AAS install.

Go to Control Panel > Add or Remove Programs (Win XP) or Programs and Features (later)
Remove all of these items in the following order:
iTunes
Apple Software Update
Apple Mobile Device Support (if this won't uninstall move on to the next item)
Bonjour
Apple Application Support
Reboot, download iTunes, then reinstall, either using an account with administrative rights, or right-clicking the downloaded installer and selecting Run as Administrator.
The uninstall and reinstall process will preserve your iTunes library and settings, but ideally you would back up the library and your other important personal documents and data on a regular basis. See this user tip for a suggested technique.

When I use find file http://www.macupdate.com/app/mac/30073/find-file (which does tend to find files that "Finder" can't), it's not coming up with any other itunes library files that have been modified in the past week, which I know it would have been - unfortunately, I don't have a very recent backup of the hard drive. It would be a few months old so it wouldn't have the complete library on it....any ideas? If you didn't back up the phone to iCloud or iTunes (on your computer) BEFORE attempting the update, the data will be lost.

I'm going to assume that since you deleted your hard drive and all its files, you had a backup, yes? If the backup has an OS (bootable clone), then you can boot into it by holding down the option key when you start up you iMac and choose the backup drive. Then use Carbon Copy Cloner or Super Duper to copy the files back to your iMac.

You must get 10.6 if they still have it, install it & update to 10.6.8 so you have the App Store to buy & download the huge 10.8 Installer.(10.9/Mavericks is the only download avaiable now without specially calling Apple).
