Searching backwards in calendar

It really amazes me that no one in the Apple iPAD/iPhone world seems to find wanting to search "backwards" in their calendar unimportant.
Not many people seem to know that you cannot search for anything in the Calendar a year prior to the current date.
I do this at least once a day on my PALM Calendar and it is such a useful tool for recalling events.

This has been commented on before from time to time. Since it doesn't come up very often, maybe we can infer that it's important only to a relatively small proportion of users. But I can well understand that, to that group, it is very important. To me, it's an irritation, but I take it as one of the compromises inherent in mobile computing. What with 64GB iPads etc, many of those compromises should now be things of the past (256K Palm Pilot anyone?).
If you haven't already done so, you can leave feedback at
http://www.apple.com/feedback/ipad.html
Apple doesn't reply directly to feedback posts, but does read and take note of them

  • How can I extend the 2-year search window of Calendar search

How can I extend the 2-year search window of Calendar search in iPhone 5s ? I basically want 'Search' to search everything in the phone, not just restricted to a 2-year window.

See my link above... it's a documented limitation...
    Calendar and Reminder search
Spotlight searches for the title of calendar events and reminders in a two-year window—it will reveal results from one year in the past and one year in the future. If an event has recurrences that fall in this range, it will find the event that is closest to the current date.
If multiple events have similar details (title, notes, location, and so on) and you search for these details, Spotlight will show the most recent event. To see more results, use search in Calendar or Reminders.

  • Permissions required to search a shared calendar?

I can view the shared calendar in my Outlook session, but whenever I attempt a search of calendar items, Outlook defaults back to my own mailbox calendar view and returns results that do not contain results from the Shared Calendar.
I have Editor permissions to the calendar.
    Ideas?
    Jason Meyer

    Hi Jason,
Please check the following settings in Outlook:
    1. Click File > Options > Search.
    2. In the Results part, check Current folder.
    3. Click OK to save the settings.
Then we can search the shared calendar by the following steps:
    1. Navigate to Calendar pane, check the specific shared calendar listed under Shared Calendars.
    2. Uncheck all calendars listed under My Calendars.
    3. In the right top corner of the calendar month view, there is a box which we can type the Keywords to Search Shared -Calendar. Alternatively, we can press Ctrl +E to search it.
Then check whether the issue persists.

  • SEARCH in the Calendar

I don't understand how Apple did another firmware update and completely ignored adding SEARCH to the calendar, not to mention copy/cut/paste. I'm beginning to miss my Palm Centro...

    You're welcome.
I used "you" as in plural regarding anyone and everyone that uses the iPhone feedback link - the same applies to anyone and everyone that does so, not just you as an individual or as being the only one that wants this feature.
There are a couple of features that I'd like to see which are different from the two you listed - not a do or die for me, but what makes the two features that you want more important than the two features that I want?
    Get my drift?
I'll hang on to my iphone for a while longer, and if nothing changes, I'll change.
This is exactly what you should do. Someone should not purchase or keep a device that does not meet an important need or want, not unless they don't mind carrying around two devices or have money to burn.

  • 10.6 bash history-search-backwards

This is a repost from http://discussions.apple.com/message.jspa?messageID=10954384
10.6 broke my terminal history search
    In 10.4 I added
    bind '"M-[A": history-search-backward'
    bind '"M-[B": history-search-forward'
to my .bash_profile allowing me to use the up/down arrows to search through the history in terminal, but as of 10.6 this no longer works.
I would like the up and down arrows to perform a search of the history for the string I have typed in the terminal. That is if I had issued the following sequence of commands in the terminal,
    $cd ~/
    $nano .bash_profile
    $vi .bash_profile
so now these commands are sequentially listed in my bash history. Now if I press the up arrow, the first command to come up will be the last one that I entered, that is, $vi .bash_profile. Now if I had instead pressed up three times, the command, $cd ~/ would come up. Now what I want bash to do, and had working in OS X 10.4, is if I type a string into the terminal (and DO NOT press ENTER) such as, $cd , then I press up, bash will search through the terminal history for the instances of the command cd that I have previously entered. This is the same behavior as the MATLAB command prompt.
I know this is possible because it used to work. I would like to have this behavior again because it is very useful. I do know that I can use crl-R to search the history, but this is kind of a pain to use and it doesn't work very well.
I added the above code to ~/.inputrc and now if I type the letter 'b' in terminal I get the output
    {quote}
    "": history-search-forward
    {quote}
It only does this for the the letter 'b'. I have tried all the other keys and there is no weird output. What is up with bash?

I have the following in my .bashrc file:
    # Setup Command line editing using vi mode (default is Emacs).
    # Map Ctrl-P and Up-arrow as command recall (previous),
    # with Ctrl-N and Down-arrow as next (foreword) command.
    # Viewing key binding:

    # bind -m vi-command -p | more # key bindings
    # bind -m vi-command -s | more # macros (like below)
shopt -s -o vi # set vi command line editing.
bind '"C-p": "ekA"' # Ctrl-P: when in insert mode
    bind -m vi-command '"C-p": "kA"' # Ctrl-P: when in insert mode
bind '"C-n": "ejA"' # Ctrl-N: when in command mode
    bind -m vi-command '"C-n": "jA"' # Ctrl-N: when in command mode
    # I have had problems with a Linux version of Bash 2.05.8(1) that did not
    # like it when I remapped the up and down arrow keys, so if I find myself
    # with that version of bash, I do not try to remap them.
    # "cat -v" can be very useful for determing what the escape sequence being
    # issued by an keypad or function key. Keep in minde that the keypad has
    # multiple modes the terminal emulator can be placed in, which alters the
    # escape sequence, hence the multiple sets of mapping for up and down arrow
    # in both vi-insert and vi-command mode.
    if [[ "$BASH_VERSION" != 2.05.8(1) || $OSTYPE = darwin ]]; then #{
bind '"M-OA": "ekA"' # Up-arrow: when in insert mode
    bind -m vi-command '"M-OA": "kA"' # Up-arrow: when in insert mode
bind '"M-OB": "ejA"' # Down-arrow: when in command mode
    bind -m vi-command '"M-OB": "jA"' # Down-arrow: when in command mode
bind '"M-[A": "ekA"' # Up-arrow: when in insert mode
    bind -m vi-command '"M-[A": "kA"' # Up-arrow: when in insert mode
bind '"M-[B": "ejA"' # Down-arrow: when in command mode
    bind -m vi-command '"M-[B": "jA"' # Down-arrow: when in command mode
    fi #}
The above does work for me on ALL my platforms (Mac OS X, Tiger, Leopard, Snow Leopard), Linux, Solaris, AIX, and Windows-Cygwin.
I use vi command line editing, so if you prefer the emacs command line editing, then the above will not work for you, in some cases I map the up/down arrows and Control-P/Control-N to vi commands.

  • Terminal history-search-backwards

Terminal's history-search-backwards appears broken in Leopard.
The following in .bash_profile in Tiger allowed a quick search in Terminal's history (i.e. 'ls' and up arrow listed all ls commands in the history)
    bind '"\M-[A": history-search-backward'
    bind '"\M-[B": history-search-forward'
In Leopard, it no longer works for me. Can anyone confirm?
    Tony

changing \M- to \e fixed it:
    bind '"\e[A": history-search-backward'
    bind '"\e[B": history-search-forward'

  • Linux-ck and bash's history-search-backward

This issue seems really weird to me. I have this in my .inputrc:
    $if mode=vi
    set keymap vi-command
    # these are for vi-command mode
    "\ek": history-search-backward
    "\ej": history-search-forward
    "\e.": yank-last-arg
    set keymap vi-insert
    # these are for vi-insert mode
    "\ek": history-search-backward
    "\ej": history-search-forward
    "\e.": yank-last-arg
    $endif
This has been working for ages and still works when I boot the standard 3.0 kernel. But when I boot the 3.0-ck kernel, alt+j and alt+k do become previous-history and next-history respectively.
So, what does the ck-kernel has to do with these bash bindings?

I would like the up and down arrows to perform a search of the history for the string I have typed in the terminal. That is if I had issued the following sequence of commands in the terminal,
    +$cd ~/+
    +$nano .bash_profile+
    +$vi .bash_profile+
so now these commands are sequentially listed in my bash history. Now if I press the up arrow, the first command to come up will be the last one that I entered, that is, +$vi .bash_profile+. Now if I had instead pressed +up+ three times, the command, +$cd ~/+ would come up. Now what I want bash to do, and had working in OS X 10.4, is if I type a string into the terminal (and DO NOT press ENTER) such as, +$cd+ , then I press +up+, bash will search through the terminal history for the instances of the command +cd+ that I have previously entered. This is the same behavior as the MATLAB command prompt.
I know this is possible because it used to work. I would like to have this behavior again because it is very useful. I do know that I can use +crl-R+ to search the history, but this is kind of a pain to use and it doesn't work very well.

  • Using search function in calendar mode

I can't figure out how to search when I am in calendar mode.  I want to look up past and future appointments for the same person, and I can't find a search function on the menu in the calendar mode.  Thanks.

Have you tried resetting your iPad?
Press and hold the Home button and the Wake / Sleep button at the same time, keep them both pressed until the Apple Logo appears on the screen (ignore the swipe to turn off message, just keep the buttons pressed).
It can take 10-20 seconds for the Apple Logo to appear ans then you iPad will restart with no loss of data.

  • Searching for Old Calendar Appointments

I keep my full Calendar with all my old appointments on my iPad. As such, I have appointments going back 4 or more years. I routinely have to look up dates of some of these older appointments, yet I can't find a way to tell the iPad to search/find them. According to any documentation that I can find, it says that SpotLight Search will only search 1 year in the past and 1 year in the future. However, even if I search for a phrase using the search bar in the Calendar, it will not find these old appointments. Does anyone know of a setting that needs to be changed or how this can be done?
    Thanks,
    Merg

Hi QTsearcher, I had the same problem, and am now running Myst on Windows 98SE along with Riven and Exile. If you have games from the same era as Myst, i.e. the same time or up to a year later, check the folders and files that come up when you get ready to install them, some have QT programs that you can install alone without installing the game. After you install the QT, then install the Myst and it will find the version that it wants... This is what I did, and it worked for me.
    Good Luck

  • Search help for calendar

    Hi,

    use function module
    <b>FU F4_DATE</b>
    Text
<b>Display factory calendar or Gregor. calendar and choose a day</b>
see also the parameter documentation (long texts).
    Parameters
    SELECT_DATE
If the parameter DISPLAY is initial, the date selected by the user is returned in SELECT_DATE.
If the user did not select a date, SELECT_DATE contains:
    - the value DATE_FOR_FIRST_MONTH, if it was passed as not-initial,
    otherwise
    - the value determined with PROGNAME_FOR_FIRST_MONTH if this
    parameter was used, otherwise
    - the initial value (SPACE).
It is thus possible for example to assign the corresponding screen field directly to both the (input) parameter DATE_FOR_FIRST_MONTH and the (output) parameter SELECT_DATE when the function module is called.
    SELECT_WEEK
    SELECT_WEEK_BEGIN
    SELECT_WEEK_END
    DISPLAY
DISPLAY = SPACE (default) -> A date can be selected.
    = X -> Only display, no selection.
    FACTORY_CALENDAR_ID
The parameters HOLIDAY_CALENDAR_ID, FACTORY_CALENDAR_ID and GREGORIAN_CALENDAR_FLAG define which calendar is displayed.
If GREGORIAN_CALENDAR_FLAG = 'X', the Gregorian calendar is always displayed, irrespective of FACTORY_CALENDAR_ID and HOLIDAY_CALENDAR_ID.
If no parameter is set, the factory or holiday calendar is used from local memory. These can be set (and reset) with the function module CALENDAR_FOR_F4_DATE.
    Remarks:
    (1) If GREGORIAN_CALENDAR_FLAG = 'X' was passed, the Gregorian calendar is always displayed, irrespective of FACTORY_CALENDAR_ID and HOLIDAY_CALENDAR_ID.
    (2) The Gregorian calendar is also displayed if no calendar was set explicitly or by calling CALENDAR_FOR_F4_DATE.
    (3) If both HOLIDAY_CALENDAR_ID and FACTORY_CALENDAR_ID were passed, the function module reacts with an exception.
    PROGNAME_FOR_FIRST_MONTH
If no DATE_FOR_FIRST_MONTH was passed, but a program name was passed with parameter PROGNAME_FOR_FIRST_MONTH, the function module determines the month to be displayed using the contents of the field to which the cursor is pointing.
    DATE_FOR_FIRST_MONTH
If a date is passed in DATE_FOR_FIRST_MONTH, the month containing this date is first displayed.
If parameter DATE_FOR_FIRST_MONTH is not passed or is initial, the first month displayed with PROGNAME_FOR_FIRST_MONTH (if passed) or the date is determined.
    GREGORIAN_CALENDAR_FLAG
    GREGORIAN_CALENDAR_FLAG = 'X'
-> Display the Gregorian calendar: Saturdays and Sundays are highlighted.
    GREGORIAN_CALENDAR_FLAG = SPACE (default)
-> Determine the factory calendar with the parameter FACTORY_CALENDAR_ID or from local memory.
    HOLIDAY_CALENDAR_ID
The parameters HOLIDAY_CALENDAR_ID, FACTORY_CALENDAR_ID and GREGORIAN_CALENDAR_FLAG define which calendar is displayed.
If no parameter is set, the factory or holiday calendar is used from local memory.
These can be set (or reset) with the function module CALENDAR_FOR_F4_DATE.
    Exceptions
    HOLIDAY_CALENDAR_NOT_FOUND
    PARAMETER_CONFLICT
    DATE_INVALID
    CALENDAR_BUFFER_NOT_LOADABLE
    DATE_AFTER_RANGE
    DATE_BEFORE_RANGE
    FACTORY_CALENDAR_NOT_FOUND

  • Possible to Search for a Calendar

Somehow I ended up with Calendars named "Untitled", "Untitled 2" and "Untitled 3". I don't know how these showed up and don't know what events could be associated with them. Don't want to just delete these Calendars without knowing what they have in them.
Is it possible to search for all events within a particular Calendar? Or maybe organize/sort events by Calendar?

    smilingdog,
Enter the " character in the iCal Search field which is located in the upper right hand corner of the iCal window. When you do that you will be presented with a results pane in the bottom of the iCal window. The results pane will have four columns at the top (Calendar/Date/Type/Title). Click on the "Calendar" column to see the results organized by specific calendars.
Alternately, you can (⌘ + click) on any calendar in the "CALENDARS" source pane to deselect all calendars, then the calendar that you want to display, and enter the " character in the search field. That will display only the entries associated with that particular calendar.
As a side note, the search field has a magnifying glass icon with a small down arrow which can be used to specify what items to search in.
    ;~)

  • Calendar search not finding calendar events older than a year.

Calendar search cannot find events older than a year.
    neither does spotlight search.
    iphone 4s 16GB ios version 7.1.2
ipad 32GB with retina (purchased on 2012) ios version 7.1.2
Does anybody has the same issue?
Calendar events over one year old are not found when searched on iOS. Neither on the iPhone nor the iPad. Although they are found on a mac running mavericks calendar app.
All events are displayed when going directly to the month and viewing all the events of each day, but she search feature, the one accessed through the little magnifier, simply cannot find any event older than a year.
I have multiple events in my calendar and I tested them and the last I can find is within 365 days of today. after that events cannot be found.
    steps to reproduce:
    1. go into the calendar app on the iPhone and add an event but use a date date 13 months older than the current date. Save the event.
    2. verify the even is created by looking at the day of the event
    3. on the top right corner of the calendar app select the magnifying glass and try to search the event by typing any word you used on the title of the event just created
    4. search result will display No Results
    5. exit the calendar and access spotlight search on the home screen by using the "pull down" gesture from an area outside of the dock, including the top row of app icons. Type any word you used on the title of the event just created
    6. search result will not display the event
    Thanks

    this has already been answered.
