Security update 2014-001 failed due to errors

I have attempted to load Security update 2014-001 on a 2009 MacPro running 10.8.5 (2x 2.8GHz Quad Xeons with 12GB of RAM and 1.2 GB of space on the OS disk) but it fails "due to errors". I have tried from the App update and directly from the Apple support site.  I even reloaded the OS and still get a fail.  Of course I suspect a compromise with this result but how do I fix it?

Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Console in the icon grid.
Select
/var/log ▹ install.log
from the hierarchical list on the left. If you don't see that list, select
View ▹ Show Log List
from the menu bar. Then select the messages from the last installation or update attempt, starting from the time when you initiated it. If you're not sure when that was, click the Clear Display button in the toolbar of the Console window and then try the installation again.
Copy the messages to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C. Paste into a reply to this message (command-V).
If there are runs of repeated messages, post only one example of each. Don’t post many repetitions of the same message.
When posting a log extract, be selective. Don't post more than is requested.
Please do not indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into this discussion.
Important: Some private information, such as your name, may appear in the log. Edit it out by search-and-replace in a text editor before posting.

  • Security Update 2014-001 Woes

After Security update 2014-001, I can't quicklook any video or audio files (images/text/pdf still work) and when trying to load Facebook or IMDB in Safari, the pages will load, reload three times, then I get a 'Safari Web Content quit unexpectedly' pop-up.
If I open Safari, set cookies to 'never block' then back to my normal setting of 'block third party & advertisers' the pages will load normally.  I have to do this every time I start the browser for those pages (and my bank's website) to load properly.  I'm using Safari 5.1.7 by the way, because I use RSS everytime I browse the web, I want it built into my browser instead of hassling with another app, and they dropped support for it in 6+.
For video/audio files I no longer get a preview of the file in the icon—just generic movie or mp3 icons—and attempting to quicklook those files gets me a window featuring the icon and a message that 'there was an error with the preview of this file.'
I remember when I used to look forward to updates, now I examine them carefully before installing to see what functionality I use all the time that the 'upgrade' is going to take away.  Even after hesitating and reading up on 2014-001 before installing, I still got bit.  I'm just about ready to huck the #@!$ computer out the window.
How do I uninstall the security update so I can resume normal web browsing and restore quicklook function?

What a pain.  I finally managed to fix things by booting from the Lion recovery disk, reinstalling Windo—oops, I mean Lion, then running Software Update and ignoring the 2014-001 security update.
I then set Software Update to never check for updates again.
Voila!  Quicktime player works again!  Quicklook previews audio/video files again!  Safari works again!

  • Security update 2014-001 will not update

I have a MacBook Pro Retna with a SSD drive running OSX 10.8.5. Software update says I have security update 2014-001 1.0 available for my Mac. When I try to install, it downloads, says to restart, which I do, and then gives me an error message saying the update can't be installed and to contact apple. I have done this several times, with the same result. The system will not accept the update? Checking the updates, the update listed is 2013-003. What can I do. I've even tried running the update from a manual download, with the same result.

If you don't already have a current backup, back up all data, then reinstall the OS.* You don't need to erase the startup volume, and you won't need the backup unless something goes wrong. If the system was upgraded from an older version of OS X, you may need the Apple ID and password you used.
If you use FileVault 2, then before running the Installer you must launch Disk Utility and select the icon of the FileVault boot volume ("Macintosh HD," unless you gave it a different name.) It will be nested below another icon with the same name. Click the Unlock button in the toolbar and enter your login password when prompted. Then quit Disk Utility to be returned to the main screen.
There are ways to back up a computer that isn't fully functional. Ask if you need guidance.
If you installed the Java runtime distributed by Apple and still need it, you'll have to reinstall it. The same goes for Xcode.
*The linked support article refers to OS X 10.9 ("Mavericks"), but the procedure is the same for OS X 10.7 ("Lion") and later.

  • Anyone updated system running OS X Server 2.2.2 with Security Update 2014-001 (Mountain Lion)?

Has anyone updated your system running OS X Server 2.2.2 with the Security Update 2014-001 (Mountain Lion)? If you have, may I know if you have any issues?
Also, does anyone know if a Apache HTTP module that was compiled with version HTTP 2.2.24 will work under HTTP 2.2.26 (updated by Security Update 2014-001)? I am asking because the module mod_jk.so is not available in the stock Mountain Lion but only in /Applications/Server.app/Contents/ServerRoot/usr/libexec/apache2/ (inside the OS X Server 2.2.2 app), and I am using the module for my Tomcat installation interface to HTTP server.

Actually, the university I work for is having tons of issues with our Mountain Lion computer (all models) booting and it seems to be tied to this update.  After installing this update, the computer starts booting, gets to the grey screen with the Apple logo and then won't go any further and the cursor changes to the spinning color wheel thing.  A permissions repair resolves the issue temporarily, but it always seems to come back.

  • Downloaded security updat 2014-001 is it ok or malware?

I downloaded a security update that appeared to be from Apple. Security update 2014-001. Any idea if it's ok or malware? Final installation requires rebooting of computer which I haven't done yet. Thanks!

I don't use Chrome. Go to support.apple.com/downloads/ and look for it there. Or try this: Apple Security Update 2014-001. This is for Lion and Mountain Lion.

  • Ethernet speed slow since security update 2014-001

    Dear community
I'm running a Mac Pro early 2009. OSX 10.7.5. Internet through Ethernet cable connected to a dlink router dsl-g624t. This has been my setup for years. All worked fine.
As of last few days (corresponds with my updating the system with apples security update 2014-001) that my Internet download speed is 0.01 Mbps it used to be 5.0 Mbps. I can't connect to anything. Sometimes it's ok for a few seconds then dies down completely. Connecting to the routers own IP address is slow as well.
I've plugged the Ethernet cable into another mac (laptop) and all runs at approx 5.0 Mbps as it should. I've connected the Ethernet cable between the Mac Pro and the mac laptop and transferred a 1Gb file both ways with out any noticeable speed issues. I've connected my ipad wirelessly to the router and I can achieve good speeds, again about 5.0 Mbps. Same with my iPhone.
In system pref/network it states the Ethernet 1 is connected, with an IP address etc. as if there was no problem.
What is going on. The Ethernet cable works, the router works, a connection over Ethernet between my two macs works.
What doesn't work anymore is my Mac Pro connecting to the router via Ethernet. It's so slow it can't load a simple web page in either safari or Firefox, other web connecting apps time out as well.
    Someone please help
    With much thanks in anticipation

Going to reply to my own question here.
I've never let a mac get the best of me in 15years of working with them but this problem had me stumped. Anyway I did figure it out. Not being very experienced with network issues I had to tincer about a bit. Anyway the fix for this should someone else have it can be found here in... system preferences/network/ethernet (1or2)/advanced.../Hardware/ once in this option window I had to change 'configure' to 'manual' and 'speed' to '10baseT/UTP' and 'Duplex' to 'full-duplex' and 'MTU' to 'Standard 1500'. I then had my full ethernet speed back. I believe it had all been changed by the recent security update.
I hope that helps someone sometime.

  • HT1222 security update 2014-001 1.0 will not load. Not even in safe mode. Says to contact manufacturer?

I have downloaded the latest Security Update from the Apps store, TWICe and neither time has it taken when installing. I then kept clicking and found a version specific to Mountain Lion, which I downloaded. That didn;t take on installation either, not even in Safe Mode. I have a VERY small amount of GB's per month (10 GB) and am increasingly frustrated with having tod ownload stuff that doesn't seem to work. AND the #1 hovering on the App symbol in the dock drives me nuts. Especially after downloading the same update now THREE TIMES?! Can anyon e help me to understand what's going on, or indeed how to make this thing work?

    Same here.
    Using AppStore twice: "unknown error"
I thought it might be because the AppStore installation didn't have access to my system keychain for administrator privileges, so I downloading manually, opened the DMG and ran the installer. I got the prompt for my password and the installer went almost to the end, including the "optimizing" step, but still same result:
    The installation failed
The Installer encountered an error that caused the installation to fail. Contact the software manufacturer for assistance.
    MacBook Pro 15"
    OS X 10.8.5
    2.2 GHz Intel Core i7
    8 GB 1333MHz DDR3
So how does one contact the manufacturer?
Since upgrading to Mountain Lion, I have noticed many more application crashes (on launch, on quit or at random times), spinning beachballs and use of the Force Quit hotkeys. Maybe Apple should pay more attention to its computer business instead of playing in the fashion biz.

  • Password Required to Delete Files after Doing Security Update 2014-001/Safari Ver 6.1.2

Just updated my MacBook Pro running Mountain Lion. Prior to the update the computer was working fine; I was able to delete files in the customary manner. After updating, however,I am required to enter my password to complete the action. I am uning Lightroom 5 and I cannot delete images from within that application at all even though it should work. I can create folders and move them . . . I believe the only problem I have is as stated. Any advice as to where to go from here would be appreciated . . .. .

    publish_entry SCDSet() failed: Success!
    Fatal signal 13
can't talk to PPPController : Broken pipe
    Is there a known remedy?

The VPN connection to this specific servcie provider has worked for me with previous MacOS and with 10.9. It now fails and the only change to my Macs are that I loaded the Security Update 2014-002 in the of April. I checked by adding the exactly same VPN connection definition to a 10.6 Mac and connected from the same LAN. This succeeded. Thus I suspect the Security Update, or that there is some paramater that now needs to be defined/changed.

  • Security Update 2010-001 - install error

I just tried to run the 2010 security update 001 on my Mac Book Pro and I get this error:
You cannot install Security Update 2010-001 on this volume. This volume does not meet the requirements for this update.
I run OSX 10.5.8 and have searched the internet and apple site and can't find anyone else with a similar issue.
    Does anyone have any ideas?

Ensure you have the update for Leopard and not Snow Leopard: http://www.apple.com/downloads/macosx/apple/security_updates/securityupdate20100 01clientleopard.html

Has anyone else seen this? I note from the release notes:
    perl
    CVE-ID: CVE-2005-4217
Available for: Mac OS X v10.3.9, Mac OS X Server v10.3.9
Impact: Perl programs may fail to drop privileges
Description: When a perl program running as root attempts to switch to another user ID, the operation may fail without notification to the program. This may cause a program to continue to run with root privileges, assuming they have been dropped. This can cause security issues in third-party tools. This update addresses the issue by preventing such applications from continuing if the operation fails. This issue does not affect Mac OS X v10.4 or later systems. Credit to Jason Self for reporting this issue.
Any advice would be most appreciated.
    Cheers,
    Damon
    PowerMac G4-867   Mac OS X (10.3.9)

The update prevents spamd to run as the default user "nobody". Running it as root seems to be the only workaround.
