Seeking advice on Best Practices for XML Storage Options - XMLTYPE

Sparc64
11.2.0.2
During OOW12 I tried to attend every xml session I could. There was one where a Mr. Drake was explaining something about not using clob
as an attribute to storing the xml and that "it will break your application."
We're moving forward with storing the industry standard invoice in an xmltype column, but Im not concerned that our table definition is not what was advised:
--i've dummied this down to protect company assets
  CREATE TABLE "INVOICE_DOC"
   (     "INVOICE_ID" NUMBER NOT NULL ENABLE,

XMLSCHEMA "http://mycompanynamehere.com/xdb/Invoice###.xsd" ELEMENT "Invoice" ID #####"

What is a best practice for this type of table?  Yes, we intend on registering the schema against an xsd.
Any help/advice would be appreciated.

Hi,
I suggest you read this paper : Oracle XML DB : Choosing the Best XMLType Storage Option for Your Use Case
It is available on the XML DB home page along with other documents you may be interested in.
To sum up, the storage method you need depends on the requirement, i.e. how XML data is accessed.
There was one where a Mr. Drake was explaining something about not using clob as an attribute to storing the xml and that "it will break your application."I think the message Mark Drake wanted to convey is that CLOB storage is now deprecated and shouldn't be used anymore (though still supported for backward compatibility).
The default XMLType storage starting with version 11.2.0.2 is now Binary XML, a posted-parsed binary format that optimizes both storage size and data access (via XQuery), so you should at least use it instead of the BASICFILE CLOB.
Schema-based Binary XML is also available, it adds another layer of "awareness" for Oracle to manage instance documents.
To use this feature, the XML schema must be registered with "options => dbms_xmlschema.REGISTER_BINARYXML".
The other common approach for schema-based XML is Object-Relational storage.
BTW... you may want to post here next time, in the dedicated forum : {forum:id=34}
Mark Drake is one of the regular user, along with Marco Gralike you've probably seen too at OOW.

  • Best practices for additonal storage devices in a clustered container

    I am wondering what is considered as best practices related to adding more storage devices. I have a Solaris Cluster 3.2, a failover resource group with a SZBT resource and a HASP resource for the zone root path. Now i have to add more storage devices (for Oracle to the zone). The additional storage devices are in the same metaset as the zone root. I see the following options:
    -> Add it to the zone (simple not managed by HASP)
    -> Add it to the existing HASP for the RG and lofs mount it in the Zone (managed by HASP, but needs lofs mount)
    Are there other options, and what is considered best practices?
    Fritz

    Hi Fritz,
    no matter which option you take it should resoult in lofs mounts.
    I in person would not mix the concepts, you started with HASP, so I would continue with HASP.
    To achieve this you have to take three steps:
    1 add the file systems to the HASP resource,
    2. create the mountpoints in the local zone
    3 add the file system to the Mounts variable in the SCZBT's parameter file.
    If you do not want to reboot the zones, you can mount the loopback files manually, but the safest option ( you will not mess up with typos in th mount pints and realize it later) would be to disable and reenable th sczbt resource.
    Cheers

  • Best practice for video storage?

    What is the best way for storing videos on external drives? I am a new FCP user coming from Sony Vegas. In Vegas I could import the .mts files into Vegas without the need of the complete file structure as FCP requires when ingesting to ProRes. Since Vegas worked in this manner, I store the .mts files in folders that are dated when shot. Now I'm faced with finding another program to convert to ProRes as FCP needs to complete file structure to ingest media. Another issue is that I have different types of shoots on one single flash card and I can no longer just dump the .mts files in dated folders. What is the best way of splitting up the flash card, yet keeping the required information FCP needs for ingesting media?
    The solution would be to dump the videos to my external drive as soon as I'm done shooting, but most likely it's something I'll forget to do.
    Anyone have any advice on storing videos that have two plus types footage of different events?

    I have a tutorial that covers this...

  • Advice on Best practice for inter-countries Active Directory

    We want to merge three active directories with on as parent in Dubai, then child in Dubai, Bahrain and Kuwait. The time zones are different and sites are connected using VPN/leased line. With my studies i have explored two options. One way is to have parent
    domain/forest in Dubai and Child domain in respective countries/offices; second way is to have parent and all child domains in Dubai Data center as it is bigger, while respective countries have DCs connected to their respective child domains in Dubai. (Personally
    i find it safer in second option)
    Kindly advise which approach comes under best practice.
    Thanks in advance.

    Hi Richard
    Mueller,
    You perfectly got my point. We have three difference forests/domain in three different countries. I asked this question becuase I am worried for problems in replications.
    And yes there are political reasons due to which we want to have multiple domains under one single forest. I have these following points:
    1. With multiple domains you introduce complications with trusts
    (Yes we will face complications that is why  I will have a VM where there will be three child domains for 3 countries in HQ sitting right next to my main AD server which have forest/domain -  which i hope will help in fixing replication problems)
    2. and
    accessing resources in remote domains. (To address this issue i will implement two additional DCs in respective countries to make the resources available, these RODCs will be pointed toward their respective main domains in HQ)
    As an example:-
    HQ data center=============
    Company.com (forest/domain)
    3 child domain to company.com
    example uae.company.com
    =======================
    UAE regional office=====================
    2 RODCs pointed towards uae.company.com in HQ

    Please tell me if i make sense here.

  • Advice re best practice for managing the scan listener logs and list logs

    Hi friends,
    I've just started a job as a RAC dba administrator for some big 24*7 systems, I've never worked with clusterware and RAC.
    2 Space problems
    1) Very large listener_scan2.log in /u01/11.2.0/grid/log/diag/tnslsnr/<server name>/listener_scan2/trace folder
    2) Heaps of log_nnn.xml files in /u01/11.2.0/grid/log/diag/tnslsnr/<server name>/listener_scan2/alert folder (4Gb used up)
    Welcome advice on the best way to manage these in the short term (i.e. delete manually) and the recommended practice and safest way (adri maybe not sure how it works with scan listeners)
    Welcome advice and commands that could be used to safely clean these up and put a robust mechanism in place for logfile management in RAC and CLusterware systems.
    Finally should I be checking the log files in /u01/11.2.0/grid/log/diag/tnslsnr/<server name>/listener_scan2/alert regulalrly ?
    My experience with listener logs is that they are only looked at when there are major connectivity issues and on the whole are ignored.
    Thanks for your help,
    Cheers, Rob

    Have you had any issues that require them for investigative purposes? If not, just remove them. Are the logs required for some sort of audit process? If yes, gzip them to a location where you can use your OS tape backup policies to retain them for n-days. Once you remove an active file, it should recreate the file and continue without interruption.

  • Seeking advice on best technology for application

    We are in the process of evaluating the best technology to use to bring over some of our applications that were written in Lotus Domino to the SAP Enterprise Portal.
    From what I've personally seen and heard (and worked with) it sounds like Web Dynpro is the way to go but I wanted to see what others' experiences may have been if they were in a similar situation.
    To give an idea of application #1 to be converted it is an online approval system- mainly used for Purchase Requisitions but can be any sort of lineitem(s) that need approval from a list of approvers.  This will NOT initially integrate with our R/3 system as we do not do Purchase reqs in there- the buyer manually creates a PO in R/3 and that will remain at least for a time after the new process goes live.
    The application is made up of ~40 forms and needs to be able to do the following:
    1. Display a users' list of their requisitions on the home page
    2. Allow a user to create a new requisition (link to req needs to be emailed to approver #1 on the list).  User will input data via drop downs for ship to address and will enter supplier info, requisitioner info, and info on what is being purchased.  We want to get the user information from the UME and pre-populate some requisitioner info but allow the user to then change it if doing a req for another person.  We want to be able, at some point, to allow the part number to do a lookup in R/3 to obtain a part description.
    3. Allow an approver, once they receive the email to approve or deny the req then move it on to next approver.
    4. Eventually a buyer will get the req in email and will have to approve or deny the req.
    So- at a minimum we are looking at a good number of forms, a fairly extensive data dictionary, and the implementation of workflow.  I want to try to determine what technology- web dynpro, J2EE, or some other would be the best way to approach this in the portal.  As of now there is a single developer (myself) assigned to this task.  An idea of how long a project like this would take in each technology (even a very rough one) would be helpful as well.  If you need more information from me to provide me some information feel free to request it- just trying to get my management an idea of what direction we should go in and how long to expect the project to take as this would be portal programming project #1 for me.
    Thanks!

    Hello Dana,
    taking a look at Lotus Domino and the description of your application I see that you need a persistence layer (to store the information that you formerly use Notes documents for), screens (Notes Forms) as well as workflow functionality (Notes document routing and document state processing). The business logic can be transferred to Java classes (equivalent to Notes Agents) or EJBs. To me it looks like a perfect case for a composite application.
    With SAP NetWeaver, you may use the following technology:
    - CAF Guided Procedures for workflow (e.g. based on the Java Workflow Engine http://help.sap.com/saphelp_nw04s/helpdata/en/94/064e7a2f8a4f10a488f098febd84c4/frameset.htm)
    - Java dictionary project for persistence and business logic
    - Screen design can be done with Visual Composer (free-style) or more extensible with WebDynpro.
    When doing so, the guided procedures keep control of the screen flow and multi-user guidance (workflow). The screens designed by VC or WD are then linked to guided procedures as callable objects.
    Don't forget to use NWDI
    Regards
    Michael

  • Best Practices for data storage in portal database

    Hi,
    I need to store some stuctured data which is related to portal only. This data may grow data by data and may huge amount some point of time.
    Iam thinking which is the best way to handle it like maintanance point of view.
    i think i can store it in R/3 as custom table which is easy to maintain and read/write using RFC.
    the other one is store it on the portal database (dictionary), may not be easy to handle it.
    suggestions please?
    Thanks.

    Best way is to maintian data(growing data) on R3 and use  JCA to write a simple portal application(JSPDynpage or WD) to get the data back on portal.
    Using JCA, won't affect noticeable portal performance..
    Itz not advisable to store large data on dictionary.
    Regards,
    N.

  • Best practice for optimizing processing of big XMLs?

    All,
    What is the best practice when dealing with large XML files ... (say couple of MBs).
    Instead of having to read the file from the file system everytime a static method is run, what would be the best way in which the program reads the file once and then keeps it in memory. So the next time it would not have to read and parse it all over again?
    Currently my code just read the file in the static method like ...
    public static String doOperation(String path,...) throws Exception
    try{
    String masterFile = path+"configfile.xml";
    Document theFile = (Document)getDocument(masterFile);
    Element root = theFile.getDocumentElement();
    NodeList nl = root.getChildNodes();
    // ... operations on file
    Optimization tips and tricks most appreciated :-)
    Thanks,
    David

    The best practice for multi-megabyte XML files is not to have them at all.
    However if you must, presumably you don't need all of the information in your XML, repeatedly. Or do you? If you need a little bit of it here, then another little bit of it there, then yet another little bit of it later, then you shouldn't have stored your data in one big XML.
    Sorry if that sounds unhelpful, but I'm having trouble imagining a scenario when you need all the data in an XML document repeatedly. Perhaps you could expand on your design?

  • Best Practices for Accessing the Configuration data Modelled as XML File in

    Hi,
    I refer the couple of blof posts/Forum threads on How to model and access the Configuration data as XML inside OSB.
    One of the easiest and way is to
    Re: OSB: What is best practice for reading configuration information
    Another could be
    Uploading XML data as .xq file (Creating .xq file copy paste all the Configuration as XML )
    I need expert answers for following.
    1] I have .xsd file which is representing the Configuration data. Structure of XSD is
    <FrameworkConfig>
    <Config type="common" key="someKey">proprtyvalue</Config>
    <FrameworkConfig>
    2] As my project will move from one env to another the property-value will change according to the Environment...
    For Dev:
    <FrameworkConfig>
    <Config type="common" key="someKey">proprtyvalue_Dev</Config>
    <FrameworkConfig>
    For Stage :
    <FrameworkConfig>
    <Config type="common" key="someKey">proprtyvalue_Stage</Config>
    <FrameworkConfig>
    3] Let say I create the following Folder structure to store the Configuration file specific for dev/stage/prod instance
    OSB Project Folder
    |
    |---Dev
    |
    |--Dev_Config_file.xml
    |
    |---Stage
    |
    |--Stahe_Config_file.xml
    |
    |---Prod
    |
    |-Prod_Config_file.xml
    4] I need a way to load these property file as xml element/variable inside OSb message flow.?? I can't use XPath function fn:doc("URL") coz I don't know exact path of XMl on deployed server.
    5] Also I need to lookup/model the value which will specify the current server type(Dev/Stage/prod) on which OSB MF is running. Let say any construct which will act as a Global configuration and can be acccessible inside the OSb message flow. If I get the vaalue for the Global variable as Dev means I will load the xml config file under the Dev Directory @runtime containing key value pair for Dev environment.
    6] This Re: OSB: What is best practice for reading configuration information
    suggest the designing of the web application which will serve the xml file over the http protocol and getting the contents into variable (which in turn can be used in OSB message flow). Can we address this problem without creating the extra Project and adding the Dependencies? I read configuration file approach too..but the sample configuration file doesn't show entry of .xml file as resources
    Hope I am clear...I really appreciate your comments and suggestion..

    If you can enforce some sort of naming convention for the transport endpoint for this proxy service across the environments, where the environment name is part of the endpoint you may able to retrieve it from $inbound in the message pipeline.
    eg. http://osb_host/service/prod/service1 ==> Prod and http://osb_host/service/prod/service2 ==> stage , then i think $inbound/ctx:transport/ctx:uri can give you /service/prod/service1 or /service/stage/service1 and applying appropriate xpath functions you will be able to extract the environment name.
    Chk this link for details on $inbound/ctx:transport : http://download.oracle.com/docs/cd/E13159_01/osb/docs10gr3/userguide/context.html#wp1080822

  • Best practices for dealing with Exceptions on storage members

    We recently encountered an issue where one of our DistributedCaches was terminating itself and restarting due to an RuntimeException being thrown from our code (see below). As usual, the issue was in our own code and we have updated it to not throw a RuntimeException under any circumstances.
    I would like to know if there are any best practices for Exception handling, other than catching Exceptions and logging them. Should we always trap Exceptions and ensure that they do not bubble back up to code that is running from the Coherence jar? Is there a way to configure Coherence so that our DistributedCaches do not terminate even when custom Filters and such throw RuntimeExceptions?

  • Best practice for server configuration for iTunes U

    Hello all, I'm completely new to iTunes U, never heard of this until now and we have zero documentation on how to set it up. I was given the task to look at best practice for setting up the server for iTunes U, and I need your help.
    *My first question*: Can anyone explains to me how iTunes U works in general? My brief understanding is that you design/setup a welcome page for your school with sub categories like programs/courses, and within that you have things like lecture audio/video files and students can download/view them on iTunes. So where are these files hosted? Is it on your own server or is it on Apple's server? Where & how do you manage the content?
    *2nd question:* We have two Xserve(s) sitting in our server room ready to roll, my question is what is the best method to configure them so it meets our need of "high availability in active/active mode, load balancing, and server scaling". Originally I was thinking about using a 3rd party load balancing device to meet these needs, but I was told there is no budget for it so this is not going to happen. I know there is IP Failover but one server has to sit in standby mode which is a waste. So the most likely scenario is to setup DNS round robin and put both xserves in active/active. My question now is (this maybe related to question 1), say that all the content data like audio/video files are stored by us, (We are going to link a portion of our SAN space to Xserve for storage), if we are going with DNS round robin and put the 2 servers in Active/Active mode, can both servers access a common shared network space? or is this not possible and each server must have its own storage space? And therefore I must use something like RSYNC to make sure contents on both servers are identical? Should I use XSAN or is RSYNC good enough?
    Since I have no experience with iTunes U whatsoever, I hope you understand my questions, any advice and suggestion are most welcome, thanks!

    wht is the Best Practice for having server pool i.e
    1) having a single large serverpool consisting of "n" number of guest vm
    2) having a multiple small serverpool consisting of less of number of guest vm I prefer option 1, as this gives me the greatest amount of resources available. I don't have to worry about resources in smaller pools. It also means there are more resources across the pool for HA purposes. Not sure if this is Official Best Practice, but it is a simpler configuration.
    Keep in mind that a server pool should probably have up to 20 servers in it: OCFS2 starts to strain after that.

  • Best Practice for Servlets

    I guess I'm asking for most peoples' input on what I'm planning to do here ....
    Here's what I want to do, and know a bit about.
    o I want to make a servlet that serves only XML.
    o After that, I want to transform the XML into web pages, RSS feeds etc.. using XSLT.
    Here's what I'm not so sure about...
    o How should I implement the interface to the web-based aspects? Should the servlet be coded to display HTML pages on "GET" requests? Or should I use a pile of HTML files to make forms?
    o What do I use to perform the XSLT transformations? Where should the set of solutions be placed relative to my servlet? Would a user then access this solution rather than the servlet itself?
    o How do I code the servlet on one machine, and then test it on another without breaking the libraries? How do I set up any libraries I might have to use (like for XSLT transformations) on the server?
    Any other advice here? I'm sure this is done often, but I can't find a resource that explains the best practices for it all.
    I know this sounds like a lot of stupid questions. I've had lots of programs working with Java before, but I'm at a loss as to how I'm supposed to package libraries I use in my programs - moreso with a servlet. To make matters worse, I plan on using MySQL as the database.
    If there's some wizard on the forums here who's willing to say more than just "RTFM" (of which there is none to answer my questions together as one), I'd be very very happy ":^)

    Let me re-pose my question so as to be specific
    enough to not be picked apart in my answer.
    I want to FIRST AND FOREMOST, create a servlet that
    serves up XML based on parameters given to it (how?
    who cares.).What does "serves up XML" mean?
    Let's be precise. Do you intend the servlet to send the XML back to the client? Or is the XML an intermediate step in your processing? (Yes, it matters.)
    Then, I want to create interfaces (HTML, RSS,
    boogledeedoo) to this XML data by having either JSP,
    another servlet or insert something else here,
    transform the XML into whatever the desired format
    is."interface" is a loaded term in Java. What do you mean by it?
    >
    My assumption is that I'll make the servlet that is
    capable of outputting my desired XML data and then
    create another servlet that will poke it for data as
    needed to transform the XML into HTML. This servlet
    would also likely serve as the web site itself and
    would manage user logins etc...(persistance yaddy
    yadda)You're not thinking about this properly.
    "yadda yadda" == muddled thinking.
    My other assumption is that I'll make another servlet
    that will poke the XML servlet and transform that
    into RSS or anything else I can dream up.How does "poke the XML servlet" fit into the request/response protocol that is HTTP? Please explain.
    -=-!REASONING!-=-
    Previously, when I was working with PHP, I liked to
    make scripts that would display interfaces and post
    to themselves. OK, now I see. "interface" == GUI in a browser to you. Very good.
    You can create a JSP that is an interface. You can have that JSP submit the HTTP POST or GET request to itself. No problem there, as long as "itself" knows what to do with the request.
    It was a nice way of creating a
    complete little package. Everything for one function
    was encapsulated nicely under one roof. No excessive
    HTML files all over the place to nurture.A simple problem, a simple solution. You can do that with a JSP.
    Look. Part of my inability to describe this well is
    because I DO feel like I'm in a lot of directions at
    once. Or you don't understand the technology very well.
    But I have to be in order to pull together
    some sort of plan for myself. I understand many
    concepts and have just finished studying object
    oriented design etc..."Just finished"? How long did it take?
    I know things about how Tomcat does connection
    pooling for SQL connections.Great. Not much to understand there. It's harder to figure out how to do n-tier apps with more than one page well.
    I do know how to use Google, probably a lot better
    than most. But rest assured, I've yet to find a
    little guide as complete as any of the "LAMP" books
    there are out there. Which by the way, I have never
    purchased.That's because Java Enterprise Edition isn't intended for little problems. LAMP is. Maybe the limitation is that you are used to "little" problems and not bigger ones.
    If JEE seems scattered and complex, it's because it is. It encompasses more than LAMP.
    I'm confident in good guidance, and not a heartfelt
    smackdown. I'm still waiting for some clear suggestions.I gave you one, you just didn't know it: go read about Spring.
    http://www.springframework.org
    It'll help you structure complex apps from the user interface to the database in the back.
    You're welcome.

  • What is the guideline and/or best practice for EMC setup on ASM?

    We are going to use EMC CX4-480 for ASM storage on RAC. What is the guideline and best practice for EMC setup on ASM?
    Thanks for the advice!

    Probably a poor choice of words. Sorry.
    So basically, I have gotten further, but I just noticed related problem.
    I'm using the WebServices(WS) 1.0. I insert an account, then, on a separate WS call, I insert my contacts for the account. I include the AccountID, and a user defined key from the Account when creating the Contact.
    When I look at my Contact on the CRMOD web page, it shows the appropriate links back to the Account. But when I look at my Account on the CRMOD web page, it shows no Contacts.
    So when I say workflow or Best Practice, I was hoping for guidance on how to properly write my code to accomplish all of the necessary steps. As in this is how you insert an account with a contact(s) and it updates the appropriate IDs so that it shows up properly on the CRMOD web pages.
    Based on the above, it looks like I need to, as the next step, take the ContactID and update the Account with it so that their is a bi-directional link.
    I'm thinking there is a better way in doing this.
    Here is my psuedocode:
    AccountInsert()
    AccountID = NewAcctRec
    ContactInsert(NewAcctRec)
    ContactID = NewContRec
    AccountUpdate(NewContRec)
    Thanks,

  • Best-practice for Catalog Views ? :|

    Hello community,
    A best practice question:
    The situtation: I have several product categories (110), several items in those categories (4000) and 300 end-users.    I would like to know which is the best practice for segment the catalog.   I mean, some users should only see categories 10,20 & 30.  Other users only category 80, etc.    The problem is how can I implement this ?
    My first idea is:
    1. Create 110 Procurement Catalogs (1 for every prod.category).   Each catalog should contain only its product category.
    2. Assign in my Org Model, in a user-level all the "catalogs" that the user should access.
    Do you have any idea in order to improve this ?
    Saludos desde Mexico,
    Diego

    Hi,
    Your way of doing will work, but you'll get maintenance issues (to many catalogs, and catalog link to maintain for each user).
    The other way is to built your views in CCM, and assign these views to the users, either on the roles (PFCG) or on the user (SU01). The problem is that with CCM 1.0 this is limitated, cause you'll have to assign one by one the items to each view (no dynamic or mass processes), it has been enhanced in CCM 2.0.
    My advice:
    -Challenge your customer about views, and try to limit the number of views, with for example strategic and non strategic
    -With CCM 1.0 stick to the procurement catalogs, or implement BADIs to assign items to the views (I experienced it, it works, but is quite difficult), but with a limitated number of views
    Good luck.

  • Networking "best practice" for setting up a farm

    Hi all.
    We would like to set an OracleVM farm, and I have a question about "best practice" for
    configuring the network. Some background:
    - The hardware I have is comprised of machines with 4 gig-eth NICs each.
    - The storage will be coming primarily from a backend NAS appliance (Netapp, FWIW).
    - We have already allocated a separate VLAN for management.
    - We would like to have HA capable VMs using OCFS2 (on top of NFS.)
    I'm trying to decide between 2 possible configurations. The first would keep physical separation
    between the mgt/storage networks and the DomU networks. The second would just trunk
    everything together across all 4 NICs, something like:
    Config 1:
    - eth0 - management/cluster-interconnect
    - eth1 - storage
    - eth2/eth3 => bond0 - 8021q trunked, bonded interfaces for DomUs
    Config 2:
    - eth0/1/2/3 => bond0
    Do people have experience or recommendation about the best configuration?
    I'm attracted to the first option (perhaps naively) because CI/storage would benefit
    from dedicated bandwidth and this configuration might also be more secure.
    Regards,
    Robert.

    Option #4 (802.3ad) looks promising, but I don't know if this can be made to work across
    separate switches.It can, if your switches support cross-switch trunking. Essentially, 802.3ad (also known as LACP or EtherChannel on Cisco devices) requires your switch to be properly configured to allow trunking across the interfaces used for the bond. I know that the high-end Cisco and Juniper switches do support LACP across multiple switches. In the Cisco world, this is called MEC (Multichassis EtherChannel).
    If you're using low-end commodity-grade gear, you'll probably need to use active/passive bonds if you want to span switches. Alternatively, you could use one of the balance algorithms for some bandwitch increase. You'd have to run your own testing to determine which algorithm is best suited for your workload.
    The Linux Foundation's Net:Bonding article has some great information on bonding in general, particularly on the various bonding methods for high availability:
