Seeking assistance in re-architecting Portal to use multiple redundant dbs

I want to re-architect my running Oracle Portal 10.1.4 installation to have more than one database providing the data layer. At present, I have a redundant architecture for every tier except for the data tier. I have two WebCache servers for the front-end, and two Oracle Application Server instances for the application tier. My only single point of failure is my Oracle 10g database. I just have one instance of the database.
I am a developer. In the past I have been told by database administrators that the schema used by Oracle Portal relies on some low-level system values in the database. As I understood it, this reliance made it impossible to have two synchronized database instances that split the load coming from the application tier.
I have searched OTN and MetaLink for architecture tips concerning a redundant data tier. I have not found anything as of yet. I have also searched the Oracle Application Server enterprise deployment guide. While I see articles about creating multiple Oracle Application Server instances, I do not see articles about creating multiple database installations to provide the data layer to Oracle Application Server.
I want to perform this re-architecture in order to bring my portal into compliance with my corporate disaster recovery policies.
Any help would be appreciated.
thanks,
Mike

We have a tentative plan.
I have met with our primary DBA to discuss our options for making our data layer more fault-tolerant. Our DBA is hesitant to use RAC, as, based on his knowledge, RAC has multipe nodes, but has a single storage point. Our goal is to not have our database be our single point of failure, and a single storage point, even with multiple nodes, is still a single point of failure. Instead, our DBA would like to consider an older technology, DataGuard. His idea is to have a single database, protected via DataGuard. This is not exactly fault tolerant, as the switch over to the DataGuard may take time, but it is closer to fault tolerance than is our current architecture. Does this make sense?
As an aside, our DBA also stated that white papers have shown that RAC has less availability than non-RAC database systems, as any "network hiccup" and node swapping starts. I have not seen these white papers, but he seems to believe that RAC is not as performant, and therefore more prone to latency/outage.
I personally don't think that either RAC or DataGuard is an optimal solution. I think that designing the Oracle Application Server layer to be able to switch between synchrononized databases is the best situation. I think this simply because if we have this set-up, we can have one of the database servers be destroyed due to disaster, and still be able to use the other, synchronized database server, which is geographically far from the destroyed server.
However, as pointed out above, I am a developer, and DBAs have a more realistic idea of our options.
I would appreciate any further assistance from any forum members. I incude links below that may be of interest.
thanks,
Mike

I have created a web dynpro application, which is running inside portal. I have created a role called "R1". Inside role R1, i have created 3 workset W1, W2 and W3. and inside each workset i have some pages and iviews.
My requirement is when user logins to the portal , and when he clicks on role R1 for the first time, a login page should come (so that we can do revalidation), and when he enters his password again in that login page , then only workset W1, W2 and W3 should be visible/accessible to him and after successful revalidation, if he clicks again on role R1, in that particular portal session, than that login page should not come.
for this, i thought i will set a variable in portal session, whenever user successfully revalidated himself, and if after successful revalidation he clicks again on role R1, i will check in doinit method of webdynpro whether variable is set or not (which i already set on successful revalidation), and if it is set then i will do Donavigation else i will present login page to the user.
Can anyone tells me how to set a variable in portal session using web dynpro java.
    thanks
    Arush

    Hi,
    Try this:
    WDScopeUtil.put(WDScopeType.CLIENTSESSION_SCOPE, key, value)
    WDScopeUtil.get(WDScopeType.CLIENTSESSION_SCOPE, key)
    Ex:
    WDScopeUtil.put(WDScopeType.CLIENTSESSION_SCOPE,"Key1","Value1");
    String value1=WDScopeUtil.get(WDScopeType.CLIENTSESSION_SCOPE,"Key1").toString();

  • Creation of a portal page using XML web form

    Hi Experts,
I want to know how to make a portal page using XML web forms... Please tell me the steps involved in doing the aforesaid.
    Thanks in advance...

    Hi
You compose page using WPC(Web page Composer), this is a bussiness package, which you need to deploy it on portal server then will get a WPC role which you can assign the user and then user can start composing the using follwoing PDF
To compose it chect this pdf

  • Portal Development using JSF & Struts

Can some one explain about the feasibility of developing portals using JSF and Struts? What are the advantages and disadvantages of doing so? Is it a right decision to develop portal servers using these?

Yes I am familiar with all those links. Let me break down scenario and ask specific questions.
    Server version: Netweaver 7.0 (2004s) SP18
    1. Created External Library DC (i.e. ebuslib)
             - added 3rd party JARS (e.g. hibernate, Spring)
             - created two public parts - one for compilation, one for assembly (deploy)
             - activated activity
    2. Create J2EE Server Component - Library DC (i.e. ebuslib2)
              - added "ebuslib" assembly PP as Used DC (build only)
    3. Built "ebuslib2"
              - can see jars in the resulting sda file.
              - activated activity
              - confirmed on J2EE engine deployed library containing the jars.
    Scenarios
    A. EP Project DC
               - needs access to 3rd party jars
               - QUESTION: What do I need to reference? The External Library DC or the J2EE Server Component Library DC?
                             - I read that you should reference the J2EE Server Component BUT the jars are not available in the PP of that DC.
                             - One developer one talked to referenced the compilation PP of the External Library DC (i.e. "ebuslib").
                                     - this seemed to work but then I wondered how the project finds the JAR at runtime?
QUESTION: Does SAP load all the classes that have been deployed via the J2EE Server Component Library DC method and hence those JARs are globally available at runtime hence no need to reference them during development except for compilation? What if > 1 J2EE library contain the same jar or same API but different versions (e.g. Hibernate 2 vs 3).
Thanks for any clarifications. I want to understand the underlying technology and how it works. I have seen alot of information out there but some of it is confusing and conflicting.

  • Errors Installing Portal Components using 9iAS Enterprise on 8.1.7 SE

We are getting an error installing the Portal Components using
9iAS Enterprise on a 8.1.7 SE database. The log indicates that
    the error is:
ORA-00439: feature not enabled: Function-based indexes
Errors encountered in the Install process. Installation Aborted.
While I know that Function-based indexes are not supported in SE
this should not prevent the installation of Portal.
    Does anyone have any suggestions?
    Thx, Paul

Its also working in our case where we have used 8.1.7 Enterprise Edition. We installed 9iAS 1.0.2.0 on NT. So if you have any issues regarding this then let me know.

  • Using Multiple Domain Names to Access Our Portal

We operate one domain corp.company.com but all internal intranet web servers get  assigned the address inside.ZZZ. The inside.ZZZ is on our IE exclusion list but company.com is not. Adding company.com seems to be a miserable task so we are looking at adding an alias so our users can access the server at the new inside.ZZZ url. We have DNS pointing the URL to the right server and that seems to be working properly.
Something within the application is redirecting the page to gnwhepdev.corp. company .com (our server’s domain address) after the initial login.  Since *.corp. company .com is not in the exclusion list, it is considered an outside address and rerouted.  We are trying to find some way to pass the alias within the  application itself so that we don’t need *.corp. company .com in the exclusion list and we can point users to the inside.ZZZ url.
Our team researched this issue and found documentation that supported the use of multiple domain names to access a Enterprise Portal.  The documentation that we found is below:
    How To…Configure the J2EE Engine Deployment Descriptor (Version 1.00 – July 2004)
    https://www.sdn.sap.com/irj/sdn/go/portal/prtroot/docs/library/uuid/d0eb8120-b66c-2910-5795-894f384fc054
Particularly on page 13-15 in the documentation it talks about enabling the portal via multiple domain names (Section 3.7:  Using Multiple Domain Names to Access the Portal).  Also, the documentation says the following:
You must have sever proxy servers, each with a different domain name.  You then activate the filter mechanism and configure it to work with several proxy servers
We have several questions about the possiblities of being able to set this up and whether it would require another server where Web Dispatcher would need to be installed for this configuration to work properly.  Can someone please provide some insight into what needs to be configured and answer the question about the Web Dispatcher?  Also, if Web Dispatcher is required, what steps need to be done to configure?  If Web Dispatcher is not needed, what will we need to do apart from that to set this up for our Enterprise Portal system?

It is but you have to use masking......

  • Link ECC roles to Portal roles (Portal is using LDAP source for UME)

    Hi all,
If a user is assigned a certain ECC ABAP role, they should also receive a related portal role.  Our portal is using LDAP.
If our portal ume source was an ABAP system, I think it would be easy to achieve the ECC to ABAP role linkage.
We were thinking of developing a UME java webservice and have an ABAP proxy class consume it to allow our abap system to assign the correct portal role, and delete the portal role.
    Any other ideas?

    Rajendra,
Thx for your reply.  Can you provide any more details as to the design of your solution with the web service?  We are thinking of running a batch job nightly with a some mapping table in ECC to determine what ABAP role should link to the portal group then call the webservice to add the user to the portal group or delete the user from the portal group.
A second question is...does SAP Identity Manager offer any solution for this type of requirement?
    Thanks

    Dear Friends,
We need to build a portal application using the class AbstractGroupwareItem. But we are not able to understand how to go about it. From the forum we found out that some of you have already used this class and have  implemented the mailing service. Can you please guide us how to go about it.
    Hoping to receive a reply.

    Hi Mat,
When creating my portal application, I had to create another DB instance to house all of the PORTAL tools becasue the vendor of the system that we use didn't want us to install portal on their oracle DB. So what I did is create a DB link in my portal DB so I can query of the vendors DB:
create public database link <tns alias name on the remote database> connect to <username> identified by <pwd> using '<tns alias name to remort database on your machine>'
Then when I query, I have to put:
    Select
    <columns>
    from
<table>@<tns alias name on the remote database>
    Hope this helps,
    Martin

  • Help required to create portal without using any vendor specific API's

    Hi All,
I am trying to develope a portal without using any vendor specific API or tool like Weblogic workshop or Vignette Wizard. I would like to know whether Sun Microsystem provides any API for developing portal. I would also appreciate if I can get few links for developing portal using java API's...
    Thanks in advance...
    Dgk

Sure Sun provides the tools: it is called the compiler. Now all you need to do is write the code for a portal. But since there are vendor specific solutions available that could make your life a lot easier, writing one yourself is like reinventing the wheel.
Pardon my mild sarcasm, but avoiding API's not developed by Sun is not the general idea behind the Java platform. You are encouraged to use those API's.

    Gateway service /SCMTMS/USER not active
From the security guide I found a handful of services to be activated :
The following services are required if you intend to use the SAP TM Collaboration Portal:

    /sap/public/bc/ur/

    /sap/public/bc/icf/logoff

    /sap/public/bc/UI2/

    /sap/bc/ui2/startup

    /sap/opu/odata/SCMTMS/TENDERING/

    /sap/opu/odata/SCMTMS/USER/

    /sap/opu/odata/SCMTMS/GENERAL/

    /sap/opu/odata/SCMTMS/EVENT_NOT/

    /sap/opu/odata/SCMTMS/INVOICE_SUBMISSION

    /sap/opu/odata/SCMTMS/FRT_PROCUREMENT

    /sap/opu/odata/SCMTMS/INVOICING

    /sap/bc/ui5_ui5/tmui/coll_portal/
But in my system, in SICF only this path is present /sap/opu/odata.
/SCMTMS onwards is missing, so am not able to activate these bunch of services which ideally should be present in the system. Hence am thinking to open a ticket with SAP for the same.
    What you suggest?
    Regards,
    Sat
