Select lists, Static Assignment Computations

Hi,
I'm using ApEx 4.0.1 on Windows XP Pro SP3.
I need to set items default values when the page loads.
So I created "Before Header" computations for each item (static assignment).
When I run the page, the default values are set, but for select lists I need to change the selected value too, not only the returned value.
(for example for a select list containing values (1,2,3,4,5) with a default value of 1. If I select 3, and then reload the page, the selected value is still 3 but the returned value will be 1.)
Is there a way to set the selected value at the same time, without having to create a special process to do that ?
Thank you.
Yann.

Sorry Denes for this late reply, I was working on an urgent thing.
So, I tried to export the application on apex.oracle.com but I can't make it run as it uses a lot of procedures/functions, packages, etc... and I don't have time to create again all the databases objects on apex.oracle.com.
So you can access the application but you will get an error if you try to run it.

Application : 17706 - Géode2010
Page : Page 3 - Points
I tried to created on other test page with only 2 select lists (Application : 20588 - Géode, Page : 2 - Filter) , and it works...
So I think the cause of the problem is somewhere else on the page.
If you have time to take a look let me know.
Thanks.

  • Problem writing a sql query for a select list based on a static LOV

    Hi,
    I have the following table...
    VALIDATIONS
    ID          Number     (PK)
    APP_ID          Number
    REQUESTED     Date
    APPROVED     Date
    VALID_TIL     Date
    DEPT_ID          Number     (FK)
    I have a search form with the following field item variables...
    P11_DEPT_ID (select list based on dynamic LOV from depts table)
    P11_VALID (select list based on static Yes/No LOV)
    A report on the columns of the Validations table is shown based on the values in the search form. So far, my sql query for the report is...
    SELECT v.APP_ID,
    v.REQUESTED,
    v.APPROVED,
    v.VALID_TIL,
    d.DEPT
    FROM DEPTS d, VALIDATIONS v
    WHERE d.DEPT_ID = v.DEPT_ID(+)
    AND (d.DEPT_ID = :P11_DEPT_ID OR :P11_DEPT_ID = -1)
    This query works so far. My problem is that I don't know how to do a search based on the P11_VALID item - if 'yes' is selected, then the VALID_TIL date is still valid. If 'no' is selected then the VALID_TIL date has passed.
    Can anyone help me to extend my query to include this situation?
    Thanks.

    Hello !
    Let's have a look at my example:create table test
    id        number
    ,valid_til date
    insert into test values( 1, sysdate-3 );
    insert into test values( 2, sysdate-2 );
    insert into test values( 3, sysdate-1 );
    insert into test values( 4, sysdate );
    insert into test values( 5, sysdate+1 );
    insert into test values( 6, sysdate+2 );
    commit;
    select * from test;
    def til=yes
    select *
      from test
      where decode(sign(trunc(valid_til)-trunc(sysdate)),1,1,0,1,-1)
           =decode('&til','yes',1,-1);
    def til=no
    select *
      from test
      where decode(sign(trunc(valid_til)-trunc(sysdate)),1,1,0,1,-1)
           =decode('&til','yes',1,-1);
    drop table test;  It's working fine, I've tested it.
    The above changes to my first idea I did because of time portion of the DATE datatype in Oracle and therefore the wrong result for today.
    For understandings:
    1.) TRUNC removes the time part of DATE
    2.) The difference of to date-values is the number of days between.
    3.) SIGN is the mathematical function and gives -1,0 or +1 according to an negative, zero or positiv argument.
    4.) DECODE is like an IF.
    Inspect your LOV for the returning values. According to my example they shoul be 'yes' and 'no'. If your values are different, you may have to modify the DECODE.
    Good luck,
    Heinz

  • Dynamic select list with one static 'not_listed" option

    Hi guys,
    I want to create a dynamic select list with one static 'not_listed' option.
    One possible alternative is to add the 'not_listed' record into database, but I really dont want to go that way unless there is no other way around.
    Can anyone shed some lights on this?
    Many thanks,
    William

    As usual : "It depends"...
    If you have a foreign key defined on that field, Scott's reply won't work - unless you define '0 - Not listed' in the database. You can use selec 'not listed' d, to_number(null) r from dual though...
    Another - more declarative way - is in the on 'Edit Page Item' page, in the 'List of Values' region set 'Display Null' to 'Yes' and 'Null Display Value' to ' - Not listed - '.

  • Chart based on Select list with submit Lov problem

    Hi,
    I have one page with interactive report showing username with links, date and
    database actions.
    Another page contains one region having flash chart based on select list with submit Lov.
    The lov is created by dynamic query.
    Every time when i click the 1st page report link, the 2nd page lov is populating the value automatically. But the problem is chart displays NO DATA FOUND message though the LOV has many values.
    I don't want to display any null values so set to NO for LOV
    I tried to write Before header computation (PL/SQL Function Body) to set the lov value, but the query is displayed as such.
    I don't want to assign any static default value also as the values are dynamic for every link.
    The following is my Before header computation of Select list with submit (Item name is p11_schema). (PLSQL Function Body)
    begin
    if :p11_schema is null then
    return 'select distinct owner schema1, owner schema2 from auditing
    where access_date=' || :p11_access_date
    || ' and username=' || :p11_username
    || ' order by owner';
    end if;
    end;
    This is my chart query.
    select null link, obj_name label, sum(sel_count) "Select", sum(ins_count) "Insert", sum(upd_count) "Update", sum(del_count) "Delete" from auditing
    where username=:p11_username
    and access_date=:p11_access_date
    and owner=NVL(:p11_schema, OWNER)
    group by owner, obj_name
    Example: If there more than one records in the lov, the graph should display the 1st record. When i select another record, the chart accordingly display the selected values. But inially it should not display "NO DATA FOUND" message.
    I tried using all the combinations of computation type for the lov, SQL query ( I could not use if conditon then), PLSQL expression, PLSQL function body. But it does not work out.
    Can anyone please help me out.
    Thanks.

    Hi Scott,
    Thanks for your reply.
    I found out the solution for this problem as below.
    But i did it in different way to tackle the dynamic query wich returns more than one record using rownum always the 1st record when it is empty instead of assigning constant (static) value like '1'. And i am returning LOV itself for both null or not null condition as below.
    Declare
    q varchar2(4000);
    begin
    if :p11_schema is null then
    q:='select distinct owner schema from auditing';
    q:=q || ' where username=:p11_username ';
    q:=q || ' and access_date=:p11_access_date ';
    q:=q || ' and rownum<2 order by owner';
    Execute immediate q into :p11_schema USING :p11_username, :p11_access_date;
    end if;
    return :P11_SCHEMA;
    end;
    Thanks.

  • Cascading select lists - HELP

    I keep missing something from the samples i have seen on the internet on cascading select lists
    I simple need one select list to determine the choices of another select list, Please use simple terms.
    Thanks for your help. Please need asap.

    Hi,
    OK - first you should have a hidden item on page 2 that will receive the country code (I'll stick with my example, if that's ok) - say P2_COUNTRY_CODE.
    Now create two select lists - say P2_STATE_CODE and P2_CITY_CODE.
    It helps if you ensure that the P2_STATE_CODE list is set with a default value to ensure that the list can be filtered correctly. Create a Computation, to run in the "Before Header" process point and conditional on P2_STATE_CODE being null (Condition Type: Value of Item in Expression 1 is NULL; Expression 1: P2_STATE_CODE). Set the value to a "Static Assignment" of something that won't appear in the list (eg, ZZ for strings or -1 for numerics). You can do this on the Cities list as well if you like. Both lists should be set to display null values and have something like -Select- as the null display text.
    Your States list should be created as a Select List with Submit with a List of Values based on a SQL statement:
    SELECT STATE_NAME d, STATE_CODE r FROM STATES WHERE COUNTRY_CODE = :P2_COUNTRY_CODEYour Cities list is a normal Select List with a List of Values based on a SQL statement:
    SELECT CITY_NAME d, CITY_CODE r FROM CITIES
    WHERE COUNTRY_CODE = :P2_COUNTRY_CODE
    AND (:P2_STATE_CODE = 'ZZ' OR STATE_CODE = :P2_STATE_CODE)Now, when the user selects a country from page 1, the country code is passed into P2_COUNTRY_CODE before page 2 is loaded. The default values for P2_STATE_CODE and P2_CITY_CODE are set and the lists are generated - the Cities list will display all cities for the Country selected as the States list will only show the default of ZZ and this "matches" every city in the country. Then, when the user selects an item on the States list, the page is submitted and the value for P2_STATE_CODE is updated in session. As the Cities list is based on this value, when the page is reloaded, it will be updated to filter based on the P2_COUNTRY_CODE and P2_STATE_CODE values.
    The only thing you have to ensure is that P2_STATE_CODE and P2_CITY_CODE are cleared from cache when you no longer need the page - you can do this in the branch back to page 1.

  • How to make a select list to return value to numeric column?

    I do have a select list with static values (STATIC:01;0,02;1,03;2,04;3,05;4,06;5,07;6,08;7,09;8,10;9). The problem is that I am returning a value to a numeric column. Therefore I have set 'Post Calculation Computation' as "to_number(:P73_MRGRATING, 9);" however I am getting ORA-01722: invalid number. How, (or when and where) to properly convert a character from a select list representing a numeric value into column of NUMBER data type?
    Thank you for your time.
    DanieD

    Sergio,
    It is because I am not able convert a value in a page item (:P73_ID) to number. On a page before, I have assigned a value to an application item (APPL_ID). On page 73, I want to assign the value in APPL_ID to the page item P73_ID . The value assigned to APP_ID is numeric. On a page 73 I also have a computation in Page processing section. It is an 'After Submit' processing of a static assignment of application item APPL_ID to page item P73_ID. Unfortunately it does not work. (ORA-01722: invalid number). I have tested this also with a 'Post Calculation Computation' on page item P73_ID (to_number(:P73_ID, 9999999999);) and I am still getting ORA... error. Only way I can make it work is to create a page item P73_ID as a text field, then when I run page 73 and enter a value into P73_ID manually - then it works and I can save the values from the form into database...
    The strange thing is that I am using application item APPL_ID on a couple of pages, in where clauses and it always works, even when I am comparing APPL_ID against a numeric value like select * from a_table where some_number = :APPL_ID, this works. But when I would like to create an entry form and assign application item APPL_ID to the page item P73_ID that is referencing a numeric table column – then I am getting ORA-01722…
    Is there any application (sample application) that is doing this and it works so I can check it and learn how to create this process appropriately?
    Thank you for your time.

  • Set Default Value of Multi-select list item

    I have a multi-select list item I want to default the value of to '%' (which is really '%null%') and have it selected. I tried setting default value of item, but it doesn't take '%null%'. I also tried a computation with a static of
    :P507_ITEM := '%null%'; How do you get the default value set and selected?

    Hi
    Shijesh is right, you need to change your null return value and use that return value as your default. Try and use something of the same datatype as your real return values if you plan to use '%' to display all as it will make your queries simpler. eg.
    Company A returns 1
    Company B return 2
    % returns 0
    Then your query would be...
    SELECT ...
    FROM ...
    WHERE company_id = DECODE(:P_COMPANY,1,1,2,2,0,company_id)
    Hope this makes sense.
    Cheers

  • Return Value of a Select List with Submit

    I have a Select List with Submit (P8_COLOR) which I want to use to filter the data in my report.
    P8_COLOR has 3 static values ALL, RGB, BYP that return ALL,RGB and BYP.
    When the page is submitted, my SQL Query (PL SQL function body returning SQL Query) does not recognize the return value. I can assign the return value to a different textfield and can see the correct value being assigned.
    My PL SQL looks like below...
    IF :P8_COLOR = 'RGB' THEN
    q := q || ' AND COLOR_ID in (1,2,3)
    END IF;
    I am not a PL SQL expert and wonder whether the IF condition is correct. Would appreciate any help with this.
    Thanks,
    Ghazi

    Thanks Jes. That worked.
    Would you know why :P8_COLOR didn't work? What is the difference between using :P8_COLOR and v('P8_COLOR')? I am using :P8_XXXX for another Select List that only checks for null and that works. The one where I am checking for the return value doesn't work.
    Thanks again.

  • APEX 4.0.2 Multi-selection on a cascade LOV select list only pass 1 value

    Hello everyone,
    I am struggling to make a cascading LOV select list has multi-selection.
    On one report page.
    I have 2 select list
    The first one lists the court name (P4_COURT_NAME), the second one (P4_DEFENDANT) list all defendants who currently engaged in the court.
    The problem is when I allow the defendant select list become multi-select, when it submit it only pass the first selected value.
    So I create just a simple select list based one list of value, and make it allow multi-selection. When it submit, the normal select list can pass selected values properly, while the cascade LOV select list pass only the first selected value.
    Please help if any of you have an idea why.
    We use APEX 4.0.2.00.07, Oracle data version iis 11g
    The some configuration settings I set for the P4_DEFENDANT IS
    Value required: Yes
    Page Action When value changed: None
    Allow Multi Selection: Yes
    Named LOV: --Select Named LOV-
    Display Extra value : Yes
    Display Null Value: Yes
    Null Display Value: --Select—
    Null return value:
    Cascading LOV Parents Items: P4_COURT_NAME
    Page Items to Submit: P4_DEFENDANT
    Optimize refresh: YES

      ON def.def_id = ce.defendant_id
    WHERE (ce.date_joined_aodt_court IS NOT NULL
      AND (ce.date_terminated IS NULL OR to_date(ce.date_terminated,'dd/mm/yyyy') > to_date(sysdate,'dd/mm/yyyy'))
      AND UPPER(ce.court_name) LIKE UPPER(:P4_COURT_NAME)
      AND ce.active = 1)Source Used: Only when current value in session state is null
    Source Type: Static Assignment
    Maintain session state: Per session
    The rest is default.
    Thanks in advance.
    Ann

    Hi Chintan,
    The "Source used" for those items are "Always, replacing any value in the session state". To set them to "Only when current value in session state null" sounds a good solution to me.
    However, a strange thing just happened - now I will not lose the values of the items after the page reloading, although I have changed nothing in the page in my application since I asked the question. I don't understand why all of a sudden the reloading doesn't make me lose changed values any more. Let me dig it tomorrow to see what I'll find.
    Thanks so much for your help.

  • Dynamic Action in Apex - Select list to Text field

    Hi,
    I have two text items. Need to create dynamic action for the following,
    1. Order_type - Drop down values having CONSUMER & WHOLESALE.
    2. Order_number - Text field
    When a user selects CONSUMER, order number should automatically change to '1-' and user can enter only 14 characters (1-236666666666).
    When a user selects WHOLESALE, order number should automatically change to '2-' and user can enter only 12 characters (2-2155555555).
    Can someone please help to resolve this issue.
    Thanks in advance.

    Hi Gayathri,
    Gayathri Venugopal wrote:
    Thanks Kiran. Actually ,order number should be disabled. only on selection of  order type, order number should be enabled, how do I do that?can you please help
    I can do fire on page load and disable order number .But how do i enable it again on selection of order number
        Let's say '1-' is prefix for Order Number when Order Type is 'CONSUMER' and '2-' is the prefix for Order Number when Order Type is 'WHOLESALE'.
        So a solution to your issue would be:
    Go to Page Attributes -> CSS -> Inline CSS and add the following class:
    .item_disabled {
      cursor: default;
      opacity: 0.5;
      filter: alpha(opacity=50);
      pointer-events: none;
    Create three elements PXX_ORDERNUM_PRE, PXX_ORDERNUM_SUF(as text Items) and PXX_ORDER_NUMBER(as hidden. Set Value Protected -> No).
    Arrange the PXX_ORDERNUM_PRE and PXX_ORDERNUM_SUF on one row.
    Set the "HTML Form Element Attributes" for PXX_ORDERNUM_PRE to this:
    readonly="true"
    Set the "HTML Form Element CSS Classes" for PXX_ORDERNUM_PRE to this:
    item_disabled
        NOTE : The above two points are to make the PXX_ORDERNUM_PRE element readonly, because if we disable the element we can't assign it a value.
    On the change event of PXX_ORDER_TYPE select list create dynamic action to populate PXX_ORDERNUM_PRE (as mentioned earlier)
    var ordertype = $('#P11_ORDER_TYPE').val();
    if (ordertype === 'CONSUMER') {
      $('#P11_ORDER_NUMBER_PRE').val('1-');
    } else if (ordertype === 'WHOLESALE') {
      $('#P11_ORDER_NUMBER_PRE').val('2-');
    Create an on-submit computation to concatenate PXX_ORDERNUM_PRE and PXX_ORDERNUM_SUF into PXX_ORDER_NUMBER.
    Create validation on PXX_ORDERNUM_SUF, if PXX_ORDER_TYPE is 'CONSUMER' the length should be 12 characters, if 'WHOLESALE' the length should be 10 characters.(excluding 2 characters of prefix).
         So this covers the following:
    On change of Order Type, Order Number Prefix should be set.
    Order Number Prefix should be not able to be modified, but the rest of Order Number should be able to be entered by user.
    Order Number should be of specific length depending upon the Order Type.
         Hope this helps!
    Regards,
    Kiran

  • Select List with Redirect clears Foreign Key

    I have two pages created by the Form wizard, a report and a form, with a Create button on the report page. When the Create button is pressed it passes a Foreign Key item using f?p syntax - stardard code, so far, so good, the form page works fine.
    However, the form contains three Select List items, and the second and third ones need to be restricted by the value of the first one. That is, once they choose an Organization using the first Select List the second Select List should only show Groups that belong to that Organization. To do this, I have chosen the first Select List to be "Select List with Redirect". This does exactly what I want, restricting the values in the second and third items because the LOVs they are based on refer to the value of the first item in their where clauses.
    This works fine when I edit an existing record, and also works if I create a new record but don't touch the value of the first Select List. The problem is that when there is no database record and the first Select List is changed, it wipes out the Foreign Key value that was passed - so the record cannot be saved. The url after redirection shows only a value for the item that was changed, and does not include the value of the Foreign Key item as it did when the Create button was pressed.
    I cannot find anywhere to specify item/value pairs for the redirection url. So I have created a Computation which sets the value of the Foreign Key item and computes it Before Header, After Header or Before Region, etc. It sets the value, and Session State displays the value. Debug shows it being set, too. But the displayed field is empty in the region, and the record cannot be saved because the item has no value!
    Can anyone tell me what I'm missing here? I suspect the processing of the region is overriding the computation. But I can't find a way around this. Any ideas?

    Scott,
    Sorry, my mistake - it's not a database column, and Alternate Source Used is set to "Only...". The problem is still occurring.
    The tables are:
    - Person - list of People
    - Organization - list of Organizations
    - Organization Role - Roles defined for each Organization, has foreign key to Organization
    - Person Role - Assignment of a Person to an Organization Role, has foreign key to Organization Role and also to Person
    I generated a report on Person with a link to a form on the table. When they press the edit icon, the form for the person comes up fine. Then I enable a series of tabs for that person - to edit addresses, phone numbers, etc. and carry the Person ID forward to each page.
    On the Person Roles page, I generated a report that lists the roles that person is assigned to and a form to maintain the assignments. Pressing the edit button goes to the form to maintain the assignment, which works fine.
    There is also a Create button to add a new assignment, which goes to the same form and clears the primary key of this table to create a new record. I also pass the Person ID in the url so that the new record can create the foreign key value to Person.
    Now here's the problem. On the form to create or edit an assignment, there is a Select List to choose the Organization Role record that they are being assigned to. But this can be a long list, with the same role in several organizations, etc. So I want to allow them to first select the Organization, then select Roles in that Organization.
    To do that, I created a new item on the page that is not a database column. It is defined as a Select List on Organization, and they can choose the Organization from the list. Then the select statement for the Organization Role LOV has a where clause that compares Organization ID against the value chosen by the user. To make this work, the page has to be updated when they choose a different Organization, so I made the Organization field a Select List with Redirect.
    When I edit existing role assignments this works fine. As soon as I select a new Organization, the Organization Role Select List is updated and I can choose roles defined for that Organization. But when I create a new record (which passes in the Person ID in the url) and then choose an Organization, the Person ID is wiped out - and the record cannot be saved without this foreign key value.
    After selecting an organization on a new record, the url shows that the page has been called with only the new value of Organization - so the Person ID is lost, because there is no database record to fetch and it is not passed to the page. And I cannot find a way to set the item/value pairs passed to the url when the redirect is performed.
    I am displaying the Person ID for debugging purposes, and see it disappear if I set Display As to "Text", "Display as Text", "Display as Text (based on LOV, does not save state)" or "Display as Text (based on LOV, saves state)". Interestingly, even though the later saves state (I can see it in Session State), it still gets wiped out in the record - presumably because it's a database column and there is no record, and the value is "Always" going to update the session state.
    Another interesting behavior: If I set the Person ID to display as a Select List, it remains. I think this is because I do not allow extra values or nulls, so it displays the first value in the list if there is no value. (I have only created one person so far in my testing, so I can't tell yet for sure if it changes. Will try that.)
    Is this clear? I'm trying to get this application created in my workspace on htmldb.oracle.com (currently it's on my local database) but having problems creating the tables - unable to create initial extents. Hopefully, I'll have it up there soon and you can examine what I'm doing. I'll let you know when it's available.
    Thanks for your help.

  • Select list with Redirect

    Version HTMLDB 2.0.0.00.49
    Can you help?
    New to HTML DB and struggling with Select Lists.
    I have 3 select lists based on LOVs (SQL Queries).
    On selecting a value from Select List 1, this filters Select List 2 (Using Select List with Redirect) and on Selecting a value from Select List 2, this in turn filters Select List 3 (Again using Select List with Redirect).
    The problem that I have is that after the Select List with Redirect has executed, the page is rendered and the value that I selected is overwritten by the first value in the select list as determined by the SQL order clause in my LOV definition.
    Is there a way to 'freeze' the value that I have chosen regardless if the page is rendered because of the Select List with Redirect?
    I have checked the Session State and the correct values are being assigned to the appropriate ITEM variables, however what the USER sees makes it very confusing.
    Perhaps there is a better way of achieving the desired functionality?
    Perhaps I am using Select List with Redirect inappropriately?
    Any guidance gratefully received.

    id,
    Set each item's Source Used attribute to 'Only...' to cause cached values to be used in preference over newly computed values for each page view. Just be sure to clear cache for the page when first linking to it or when branching to it from other pages.

  • Report Select List

    I have a problem with my select List.
    I have created a report. I wrote a query to retrieve the desired results. Inside of this reprot, there is a column named category that has about 6 different categories (a-f). I want to place a select list on the report that will choose a category. Once a category is chosen, it will select those results with that particular category that was selected.
    I have my select list above the report, but am not sure what/where to put the code to produce the results based on which category is chosen. Can anyone help with this??
    Thanks in advance.

    Please look again. The username and password are there.
    Also, but what about my query that generates the already made report? Won't I have to make changes to that query?
    If your report already references the Select List variable, I'd think it ought to be working. But I have seen -- in my own code -- where the Select List variable was there on the screen staring me in the face but it was "NULL" to the session and to my code that was checking for it. Or it was the value from last time around. Make sure that your "Source" definition for the Select List variable has Source Used:"Always, replacing any existing value in session state," and Source Type: "Static assignment" and make the "Source value expression" is "&<select-list-variable-name>." (period!) This worked for me.
    And I'm not familiar with the syntax --> ||'-'||. Isn't that used to concatenate two items/columns? That's just PL/SQL string concatentation. I'm putting a dash between the employee number and the letter selected.

  • Select list with URL redirect - not showing the same display value selected

    Hi
    I have several select lists with URL direct on my page similar to this
    for p6_queries item the LOV is
    select QUERY_NAME display_value, 'f?p='
    || :APP_ID
    || ':'
    || 6
    || ':'
    || :APP_SESSION
    || '::::p6_queries:'||QUERY_ID||'#qtables' return_value from .....
    I am assigning a return value to the item p6_queries. But when the page is redirected, I dont see the selected value as selected in the list. Instead it goes to the null display text. Can any one help me on this?

    The problem is that your setting the item value to value of query_id. But your select list has the value of each item as the URL so it will never match and show you what you selected.
    The best thing to do may be to change your select list from a "redirect to URL" to "submit page", make it a normal query:
    select QUERY_NAME display_value, QUERY_ID return_value ...
    Then create an "On Submit: Before Computation" branch:
    Target Type: URL
    URL Target: f?p=&APP_ID.:6:&SESSION.::&DEBUG.::P6_QUERIES:&P6_QUERIES.#testing
    Condition Type: Request = Expression 1
    Expression 1: P6_QUERIES

  • Select List

    Hi,
    I have an application in APEX.
    I created a screen with select list and want to populate data in another text item based on the selected item.
    for eg. i have ename(selectlist and populating the ename based on employeeID)
    and want to display the job of the employee.
    how can i accomplish this. please advice. I want in the click event of the select list
    some thing like when list changed trigger in oracle forms
    I checked with dynamic events but not working
    thanks in advance.

    I could easily set up something like this to work:
    1- a Select List item Pxxx_EMPNO based on EMP table (ename as display-value and empno as return-value)
    2- a Display Only item Pxxx_JOB, based on Static Assignment
    3- an Advanced Dynamic Action:
    step 1. Event=Change, Selection Type=item, item=PXXX_EMPNO
    step 2. Action=Set Value, Set Type=SQL Expression, SQL Statement = select job from emp where empno= :PXXX_EMPNO, Page item to Submit=Pxxx_EMPNO
    step 3. Select Type=item, item=Pxxx_JOB
    Working like a charm. Have you missed some step, or is there a different condition to attend?
