Select query received in an unsorted way eventhough index defined

Hey,
I have a table with an index on the file_id column, defined in the same way in a test site and a production site.
The only difference of these two tables is the amoun of data contained on it.
the test site table contains about a million of records.
the production table contains about 17 millions of records.
When I do a select on the table in test site, it returns the information in a sorted way.
however, when I do the same select on the production site, the information is received in an unsorted way.
I want to know what is the reason for this differente behavior.
I assume that the index in production site might need to be rebuilt, because usually a big amount of data is extracted and deleted from the table and new information is inserted constantly.
this situation does not occur in test site, information change is not very usual.
Could you please clarify if rebuilt of index would actually help to get the results on a sorted way, or the only way to
get it is to add an "order by" statement in the query statement.
Thanks for your answers

I would recommend checking with your DBA.
From a TopLink perspective I would recommend adding ordering on the query so the results come back as expected every time.

  • USING INDEXES DEFINED ON TABLES IN SELECT STATEMENTS

    Hi there,
    I would like to ask a simple question, how i can use indexes defined on certain columns on one of my database tables in a select clause:
    table name: B2TECDOC
    schema name: AWDBT1M4
    indexes defined: AWDBT1M4.B2TECDOC_B2TECDOCKEY
    index AWDBT1M4.B2TECDOC_B2TECDOCKEY is defined on columns:
    documentname
    documenttype
    organizationid
    organizationtype
    revision
    sequence
    versionnumbercould you help me construct a select sql using this index?
    another question is will using this index in my select clause increase the overall query performance?
    thanks
    rohan

    A query like
    SELECT *
      FROM AWDBT1M4.B2TECDOC
    WHERE documentname = <<some value>>
       AND documenttype = <<some value>
       AND organizationid = <<some value>>
       AND organizationtype = <<some value>>
       AND revision = <<some value>>
       AND sequence = <<some value>>
       AND versionnumber = <<some value>>should use the index.
    An index is a more efficient way to access a relatively small fraction of the rows in the table. A table scan will be more efficient if you are trying to access a relatively large fraction of the rows in the table. Exactly what "small fraction" and "large fraction" means will depend on a variety of factors that the cost-based optimizer (CBO) attempts to evaluate in determing the query plan.

  • JDBC Receiver : Handling NULL return from SELECT query

    Hi All,
    I have a Proxy <-> XI <-> JDBC synchronous scenario. I have designed my message mapping to perform a select query using JDBC receiver adapter. The request message mapping structure at the JDBC end is as follows.
    <?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8"?>
    <ns0:MT_Matmvmt_Jdbc_Request xmlns:ns0="http://esag.com/xi/bat/MatMovementRead">
       <StatementSelect>
          <Tablename action="SELECT">
             <Table>MM_DATA</Table>
             <access>
                <SEQNO/>
                <MATERIAL/>
                <UOM/>
                <SOLDQTY/>
                <SAPUPD/>
             </access>
             <key compareOperation="EQ">
                <SAPUPD>N</SAPUPD>
             </key>
          </Tablename>
       </StatementSelect>
    </ns0:MT_Matmvmt_Jdbc_Request>
    The scenario works fine when there are records matching the select condition, but when there are no records matching the select condition (i.e. if there are no record with value SAPUPD = 'N' ) then my response message is returning the empty message strucuture as given below.
    <?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8"?>
    <ns0:MT_Matmvmt_Jdbc_Request_response xmlns:ns0="http://esag.com/xi/bat/MatMovementRead">
       <StatementSelect_response/>
    </ns0:MT_Matmvmt_Jdbc_Request_response>
    My requirement is that if there are no records matching the select condition then my response message should look like below.
    <?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8"?>
    <ns0:MT_Matmvmt_Jdbc_Request_response xmlns:ns0="http://esag.com/xi/bat/MatMovementRead">
       <StatementSelect_response>
          <row>
             <SEQNO/>
             <MATERIAL/>
             <UOM/>
             <SOLDQTY/>
             <SAPUPD/>
          </row>
       </StatementSelect_response>
    </ns0:MT_Matmvmt_Jdbc_Request_response>
    Note : I have made the occurence of the request and response message elements as miniccurs = 0 and maxoccurs = 1.
    Any inputs in this regard will be highly appreciated.
    Regards,
    Sandeep

    Hi Sandeep,
    you can not expect structure like <?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8"?>
    <ns0:MT_Matmvmt_Jdbc_Request_response xmlns:ns0="http://esag.com/xi/bat/MatMovementRead">
       <StatementSelect_response>
          <row>
             <SEQNO/>
             <MATERIAL/>
             <UOM/>
             <SOLDQTY/>
             <SAPUPD/>
          </row>
       </StatementSelect_response>
    </ns0:MT_Matmvmt_Jdbc_Request_response>
       if there is no data in table. The response which you are geting is standard format which you can not change. Instead you map this response with mapwithdefault node function while mapping to target to make the response mapping success, even though there is no data in response message.
    thanks,

  • Select Query - Optimized Way

    Hello ABAP Gurus..
    I dont have much idea about ABAP side but we have a requirement in our project where we need to fetch huge amount of data from backend and display it on the WebDynpro Java screen. I was going through the paging solution provided by SAP so that we can minimize the Java AS server memory and performance issues.
    I was wondering if we can get the selective no of records from tables based on pagesize. What I mean here:
    Suppose total no of record that I want to display on the WebDynpor screen is say 10000.
    PageSize of my webdynpro table = 100 records
    Now Can I write a select query (or is there any other way) to get data from backened table pagewise like at first hit I get records from 1 - 100, second hit I should get records from 101 - 200 , third hit from 201 - 300.. and so on till the lat record?
    Is it possible? If yes, how can I acheive this?
    -Abhinav

    Hey Rob ,
    Thanks for quick response.
    However, I have a doubt here.
    Suppose my PACKAGE SIZE is 100 and I fetch first 100 records in first RFC call, then how do i fetch records from 101 - 200 in the subsequent RFC call?
    Also, I guess SELECT .. ENDSELECT has its own performance problems

  • Executing Select query using JDBC Receiver Adapter

    I created couple types in Oracle and also new function instead of procedure
    Can I execute the above query using JDBC Receiver Adapter.
    select *
    from  the ( select cast( apr.get_distribut('', '', '', 'hdfcgd', 'CAN') as dsrTable )
             from dual );
    If possible how my message structure should look like...

    Hi vikram,
       If you use JDBC as Receiver Adapter you can only post the data to the data base I do no think so we can select the records from the data base.
       If you use JDBC as Sender hope,we can the select query in the sender communication channel.
        Hope I am clear.
      Thanks and Regardds,

  • Select Query in the receiver JDBC

    Hello all,
    Is it Possible to use the select query in eceiver JDBC.
    Thanks,
    Srinivasa

    Hi Srinivas,
    You can either create the structure or can directly write the SQL_QUERY or| SQL_DML  statement where you will specifty the action SQL_QUERY | SQL_DML .
    So you can use either XML SQL Format or Native SQL Format. Please see this help srini:

  • Is there a way to use owa_opt_lock.checksum in Select query that returns multiple records?

    Trying to do something as data would be uploaded and edited in grid. At present I am using Ora_Hash.
    SELECT
            e.ROWID, e.Employee_Id,e.First_Name,e.Last_Name,e.Email,e.Phone_Number,e.Hire_Date,
            e.Job_Id,e.Salary,e.Manager_Id,e.Department_Id,
            owa_opt_lock.checksum('HR','EMPLOYEES', e.rowid) As HashForThisRow
    FROM EMPLOYEES e;
    Thx

    No you can't.
    owa_opt_lock.checksum is a function which is used for optimist locking. It locks the row(probably by using Select FOR Update mechanism) which you select and which you are trying to update. As a result, what you are eventually trying to do is that inside a Select query you are using a function that is locking the rows, which is not allowed. And thus your query will fail with the below mentioned error.
    ORA-14551: cannot perform a DML operation inside a query

  • SELECT query - problem with SORT

    Hi,
    Same select query behaves different way on development and quality server
    on Development it returns unsorted and Quality returns sorted
    it can be resolved by SORT but why does it behave differently
    Do you know what is setting in database
    thanks

    From F1 on SELECT:
    Orders the records in a SELECT statement. Without the ORDER-BY clause, the order
    in which the selected lines are supplied is undefined. This means that two similar SELECT
    statements may produce lines in a different order.

  • Select Query failing on a  table that has per sec heavy insertions.

    Hi
    Problem statement
    1- We are using 11g as an database.
    2- We have a table that is partitioned on the date as range partition.
    3- The insertion of data is very high.i.e. several hundreds records per sec. in the current partitioned.
    4- The data is continuously going in the current partitioned as and when buffer is full or per sec timer expires.
    5-- We have to make also select query on the same table and on the current partitioned say for the latest 500 records.
    6- Effecient indexes are also created on the table.
    Solutions Tried.
    1- After analyzing by tkprof it is observed that select and execute is working fine but fetch is taking too much time to show the out put. Say it takes 1 hour.
    2- Using the 11g sql advisior and SPM several baseline is created but the success rate of them is observed also too low.
    please suggest any solution to this issue
    1- i.e. Redisgn of table.
    2- Any better way to quey to fix the fetch issue.
    3- Any oracle seetings or parameter changes to fix the fetch issue.
    Thanks in advance.

  • Oracle 11g :SELECT query blocked..??

    Hi Experts,
    could you please explain why the below SQL query is blocked?
    SELECT 1 FROM DUAL is blocking the SQL statement on GTTAPPUSR@gttccuatcriba04 ( SID=469 ) blocked SQL -> DELETE FROM GTTDB.PURCHASE_ENTRY_ID=:1
    SELECT 1 FROM DUAL is blocking the SQL statement on GTTAPPUSR@gttccuatcriba04 ( SID=367 ) blocked SQL -> DELETE FROM GTTDB.PURCHASE_ENTRY_ID=:1
    I am scratching my head without any solution when I had a look at the db today. Thanks in advance for your help.
    Regards,
    Boris
    Edited by: user12075620 on Dec 4, 2012 8:58 AM

    The SELECT statement is not blocking the UPDATE. As I said in the previous reply, the string that this query produces does not match the logic.
    This query is (at least on the surface) correctly identifying that session 1 is blocking session 2. Session 1 holds some lock that session 2 is waiting on. So far, so good. Since session 2 is waiting on the lock, we can easily enough see what session 2 is running (the UPDATE statement). But since session 1 is not blocked, it is potentially off running a ton of other SQL statements (or no SQL statement at all). The query is looking to see what session 1 is running currently. It has no way of determining what session 1 ran at some point in the past to acquire the lock in the first place.
    Going back to my KING example,
    At noon, session 1 runs
    UPDATE emp
       SET sal = sal * 2
    WHERE ename = 'KING'Session 1 now has a lock on the KING row in the EMP table. But session 1 neither commits nor rolls back, it is still in a transaction. Session 1 might not have any more activity for a long time-- the user might go off to lunch, for example (obviously, applications should not be designed to allow users to maintain open transactions indefinitely, but not all applications are designed correctly). Or it might start running other queries. Let's say that session 1 now runs a query that is going to go for an hour
    SELECT *
      FROM giant_view_with_lots_of_computationsNow, at 12:45, session 2 comes in and runs
    UPDATE emp
       SET bonus = 100
    WHERE ename = 'KING'Session 2 is blocked. Session 2 is running the UPDATE statement. Session 1 still holds the lock but it is running some completely unrelated SQL statement.
    If we run the query you posted, the query will correctly report that session 1 is running the query against the GIANT_VIEW_WITH_LOTS_OF_COMPUTATIONS but incorrectly imply that this SELECT query is the source of the lock. It is not. It simply happens to be the query that the session that does hold the lock happens to be executing at the current moment (why the application seems to be running a lot of queries that select a constant from dual is a separate question).

  • Oracle SQL Select query takes long time than expected.

    Hi,
    I am facing a problem in SQL select query statement. There is a long time taken in select query from the Database.
    The query is as follows.
    select /*+rule */ f1.id,f1.fdn,p1.attr_name,p1.attr_value from fdnmappingtable f1,parametertable p1 where p1.id = f1.id and ((f1.object_type ='ne_sub_type.780' )) and ( (f1.id in(select id from fdnmappingtable where fdn like '0=#1#/14=#S0058-3#/17=#S0058-3#/18=#1#/780=#5#%')))order by f1.id asc
    This query is taking more than 4 seconds to get the results in a system where the DB is running for more than 1 month.
    The same query is taking very few milliseconds (50-100ms) in a system where the DB is freshly installed and the data in the tables are same in both the systems.
    Kindly advice what is going wrong??

  • Select query in a report

    Hi!
    Is it possible to modify a select query for a report in the following way:
    I have created two fields where users input values and operators.
    Operators selection is a static list consisting of: =, like , in
    Value field is a text field.
    The current query is:
    SELECT
    A,
    B,
    C
    from TABLE
    I would like to add:
    WHERE
    A : P1_OPERATOR : P1_VALUE
    but it doesn't work; I get a notification that the operator is incorrect.
    It has a defaulft value = and when I set let's say 5 in the value field the whole query should be:
    SELECT
    A,
    B,
    C
    from TABLE
    WHERE
    A = 5
