Selecting Dimension Columns withut a Fact

I have multiple dimension tables that are shared among my multiple fact tables. I believe this is very common. My problem is that when I select a dimension column from two different dimension tables, without picking a fact table, I have no control over which fact table is used to create the join between the two dimension tables. This create some interesting results unless a fact is chosen.
For example. If we have 2 fact tables and two dimension tables D1, D2, F1, F2 where the following joins exist
D1 -> F1
D1 -> F2
D2 -> F1
D2 -> F2
If I select a value from D1 and a value from D2 without selecting a value from either fact table, then how can I control which fact table the join is performed on? Or is it common that the users should need to specify a fact? I can not let obi use the fact tables to get the values because they may not always be correct. I am using outer joins from the dimensions to the facts so that all values show up even if no fact exists. Hence the reason I need to use the dimensions. Any help is greatly appreciated.

When you are working with the aggregate fact tables the content of the dimensional levels should take care which fact table it hits based on the query selection.
How ever if it is everything at the detail level and you still need to control the fact and then You should be able to control it using the "Impilicit Fact Column" option in the Presentation layer
Right click on the Presentation catalog go to properties and it will allow you to set a Fact column there.
Hope it helps

  • Two columns in a fact referncing one dimension

Hello, I'd like to have two columns in a fact which are connected to the same dimension. Is this possible in OWB and how ?
    Thanks !

You may open two Key Lookup and select the same dimension twice and then use two different columns in lookup condition.

  • Referencing two fact keys from one dimension using Dim.Key = Fact.Key1 OR Fact.Key2 possible ?

    Hi all
I need your help for an approach to the following problem. Lets say that i have the following dataset
    AccountMonth
    ActivityMonth
    Amount
    201307
    201301
    2.500
    201307
    201304
    600
    201307
    201305
    900
    201307
    201306
    4.000
    201307
    201307
    500.000
    201308
    201305
    500
    201308
    201307
    400
    201308
    201306
    300
    201308
    201308
    400.000
    201309
    201307
    300
    201309
    201302
    500
    201309
    201309
    100.000
    201310
    201305
    400
    201310
    201309
    50.000
    201310
    201310
    200.000
In my cube i want the user to select the Accountmonth from one time dimension, but i want some logic to also apply for the ActivityMonth. For one measure if I for example select 201307 i'll get this amount
    AccountMonth
    ActivityMonth
    Amount
    201307
    201301
    2.500
    201307
    201304
    600
    201307
    201305
    900
    201307
    201306
    4.000
    201307
    201307
    500.000
This is easy - Accountmonth dimension is related to AccountMonth column in the fact table. Now i also need another measure, where the month selected needs to be meet for both accounting and activity month. This is also easy, as i can just reference both
columns in the fact table. Result in this case is then only one row:
    AccountMonth
    ActivityMonth
    Amount
    201307
    201307
    500.000
Now the tricky part comes when I start to select more months, because the amount i need is where month combinations are shared, so if i for example choose 201307, 201308 and 201309 i don't just want
    AccountMonth
    ActivityMonth
    Amount
    201307
    201307
    500.000
    201308
    201308
    400.000
    201309
    201309
    100.000
I actually want the amount from which the months is in either accounting or activity, like this
    AccountMonth
    ActivityMonth
    Amount
    201307
    201307
    500.000
    201308
    201307
    400
    201308
    201308
    400.000
    201309
    201307
    300
    201309
    201309
    100.000
I know how to solve it either by having two time dimensions or using MDX, but user should only have to select from one time dimension. So far, solving it using Non-empty/existing in MDX is not performing fast enough. Feedback will be appreaciated if you
have an idea of how to solve this.

  • Multiple Joins from one Dimension Table to single Fact table

    Hi all,
I have a single fact table with attributes as such:
    Action_ID
    Action_Type
    Date_Started
    Date_Completed
and a Time Dimension to connect to the fact table. Currently the 2 Date columns in my fact table are in the format of 20090101 (which is the same as my key in the time dimension), if it means anything. I've tried to create multiple joins but have been getting error messages. What is the easiest way to link the time dimension with the two date columns in my fact table? Thanks.

    hi..
it seems to be, you need to use between operator to join time dimension with fact (i.e. Non-equi join)
If it's then you should create complex join in physical layer by connecting dimension with your fact.
select columns and operators in such a way that it resembles something like the below.
    timeDimension.timeKey BETWEEN FactTable.Date_Started AND FactTable.Date_Completed

  • Report with non aggregated and aggregated columns from different facts.

    Hi,
We have got requirement as follows,
    1) We have two dimension tables, and two fact(Fact1 and Fact2) table in physical.
    2) In BMM we have made hierarchies for both dimensions, and are joins both logical fact table.
3)In fact1, we are having three measures of which we have made two as aggregation sum, and one is non aggregated(It contains character).
4)Fact2 have two measures, both are aggregation as sum.
5)Now here the problem arises, we want to make a report with some columns from dim and non aggrgated column from fact1 and and aggregated column fact2
How to resolve the above issue.
    Regards,
    Ankit

As suggested you really want to move your none-aggregated fact attributes to a logical dimension (using the same physical table as the logical fact). Map this in the BMM layer as a snowflake, Place a hierarchy on this dimension with (at minimum) Total -> Detail levels, then on the other fact table you want to include in the report, set the content level on your other fact measures to the 'Total' level for your new logical Dim and it will allow them to be present in the same report.

  • How to further restrict the task profile 'dimension' to selected dimensions

    Hi All,
We have a dimension which we require users to maintain their own master data. We have used the secondary admin task profile which provides default access to the task 'dimension'. THis allows that user access to the BPC Admin console and also to the dimension to maintain dimension members. However, we wish to limit their access to only certain defined dimensions & not give them access to all dimensions. I have tested using this task profile together with a member access profile to limit the secure dimensions for an application, however my understanding is that member access profiles will not restrict access once a user has logged into the BPC Admin Client...i.e the member access profile restricts the ability to read/write to 'facts'/sign data from a BPC front end tool, EG excel.
Any ideas much appreciated as to how to acheive this,
    Glen

    Hi,
As you said for maintaining dimension members, you had to assign a task to the task profile. However, assigning this task will allow the user to modify any of the dimensions.
You cannot give authorization to allow only selected dimensions. BPC doesnt have this feature. Either the user can modify all the dimensions or none of them.
    Hope this helps.

  • Issue with non calculated column in a fact table

    Hi All,
With 3 facts(Fact1,Fact2,Fact3) and 2 Confirmed Dimensions my joins work fine in Criteria when I include All calculated columns from facts. If I try to include a non calculated column from Fact1(Which is a number Data type) Columns from Fact2 and Fact3 show Null values. I know it is not recommended to include dimension columns in fact , does OBIEE not support Number type non calculated columns as well? Is there any work around that I can bring in my non calculated column from Fact and still get results for other fact columns.Iam at 11.1.1.7 of OBIEE
Let me know if Iam not clear.
    Your help is much Appreciated.
    Thanks,
    Vineela.

i would like to add 2 fields into my fact tables - LOAD ID (populated by a sequence during each load) and LOAD DATE.
as these fields are not related to any reporting dimensions, it is still possible to add them in OWB ? the fact wizard always ask for a foreign key to a dimension ...
    Duncan,
If you want to add non dimensional attributes to a fact by using OWB, you can create additional measures to it and use them as attributes.

    Suzie,
You can create a new local variable to report (called something like "NVP"), leave it as a "Dimension" and in the formula type:
    if([col_a]=0 or [col_b]=0;"NO VALUE PRESENT")
Basically, you are using the "if" function and the syntax is very much like used in excel except you separate the arguments with a semi-colon versus a comma.  You start out with "if()" and within the parenthesis is a logic statement followed by when true do this else that (with the "else that" portion optional as shown above).  The drawback to using a local variable is that every report you write must be customized with the local variable versus establishing this logic in a "case" statement when building the data mart and thus it becomes resident and usable like any other column of data in your database.  In some cases you are forced in using it as a local variable due to variations in the data and the logical outcome is not known until the very end of all computations, and at other times you can get away with embedding the logic at the time of constructing your data mart -- it all depends on how the data is used and sliced and diced.  Good luck and write back if you have any further questions.

  • Conformed dimension and query multiple fact tables

    Hello,
Please if someone can guide me on this requirement.
Requirement - I have a conformed dimension D1 and two fact tables F1 and F2. Both fact tables have many columns so I cannot merge
the two fact tables into one logical table. Currently both these fact tables have logical tables F1 and F2 respectively.
As per design the conformed dimension is a simple logical table in the rpd and not a dimension.
Can someone guide me how should i proceed so that i'll be able to fetch information from both the fact tables?

    Hi,
Currently the dimension table is taken as a simple logical table in rpd as it does not have have any levels or hierarchy.
Its a flat dimension. Can you guide me how can I implement a flat dimension in OBIEE? Because this dimension is taken as simple logical table
I am not able to set appropriate level for fac tables. This dimension does not appear in the list of dimensions.

  • How to select all columns in a trigger?

I add a "before delete" trigger on a table, in order to insert the records to a backup table before they are deleted.
    but I cannot write like this : insert into t_backup select * from :old;
The table has more than 30 columns so I don't want to select them one by one, how can I select all columns?

Yes, it is possible by writing something like this :
where col1 = :old.col1; But it is not directly supported. First, we need a package to remember all the OLD records:.... and please see below link for complete code in action :

    Hi,
If we want to select the multiple columns in the alv by using ooabap
so in the class CL_GUI_ALV_GRID  it is having one method SET_TABLE_FOR_FIRST_DISPLAY

I am very new to Dreamweaver/PHP/MYSQL

I have 11 columns where the name john my or may not appear so how would I select all the columns. What would the recordset look like.
As I have said I,m very new to this  and forgive me if what i have just said makes no sense.

You could try a Full-Text search (if mysql supports it) but on the surface, this sounds like a badly designed data structure. What does your database and table design look like?

  • What is the difference betwwen SELECT ALL Column and Select Speceific Colum

    Hi All,
If the block size of the database is 8K and average row length is 2K and if we select all column of the table the I/O show that it had read more blocks then compare to
specific column of the same table. Why is this?
Secondly if Oracle brings a complete block is the db buffer cache, while reading block from disk, they why there is a difference of block count in two queries.
This difference reveals to me when I check the EXPLAIN PLAN for two different queries against the same table but one select all columns and the other one select specific column.
Kindly help me in clearing this confusion.

Usually, indexes are smaller (contain fewer blocks) than the table - ergo, select empno from emp could be satisfied by reading fewer blocks.
what if there is a composite Index on a table containing 3 to 4 columns and the size of table is in 100 of GB and Index size itself is vey large then I think Oracle will go for FTS and small Index scan will be expensive. Kindly Share your thoughts.
