Selecting Preferences Performance Delay

This is something I have for a long time thought unique to my system, so I lived with it.  When I select Preferences and then on the Performance tab, there is a long delay.  I have not measured it, but it has to be 30 seconds to a minute.  If I close Preferences and then go back to Preferences > Performance, it opens straight away.
I have now just reinstalled Windows 7, so have a fresh clean installation of my CC apps, but I still get that delay.  It's not life and death, but I am wondering if this happens with everyone.  It's the sort of behaviour I'd have expected to see mentioned on this forum before, but I don't remember doing so.  But then again, a completely clean reinstall of everything suggests it is not a system error.

Do you have any network or external drives attached? My guess is that Photoshop is trying to read available hardware in preparation for displaying the Performance Preferences. Slow drives could cause a delay (as they spin up in order to report free space available).
Oh dear.  That might be exactly what is happening.  This is my drive set up.
I have not set up the network yet, but will be adding another computer and two shared printers when I get round to it.  System, Projects, and Exports are all raid0 arrays.
Thanks for responding Brett.

  • CS3 Preferences/Performance not recognizing full amount of memory

I have increased RAM in a Windows XP Pro, 32bit PC, from 2 GB, to 4 GB.  Windows recognizes that I have 3,141,872 kb of physical memory available.  Yet, Photoshop CS3 only shows available RAM of 1705 MB (Edit-Preferences-Performance-Memory Usage).
I am preparing to do Boot.ini modifications to the /3GB, and /userva switches to increase RAM available to PS.  I assumed that PS would show an increase in available RAM, even before modifying the switches.
I've been assured by a knowledgeable Windows/PS user that these mods are straight forward.  Yet, when I told him that PS was not recognizing the new Ram, while Windows XP was recognizing it, he suggested I post this on the Adobe PS forum.
Hence, my thread.   In sum - why doesn't PS recognize the new amount of RAM, or how badly have I misunderstood the concept?  (It's probably operator error.)

CS3 will recognize ~1GB more of your RAM after you edit your boot.ini file to invoke the /3GB switch, not before. Without going into all the reasons why this is so, just bear in mind that the /3GB switch is not risk-free; a minority of computers will not boot at all (in normal, safe or any other mode) once it's enabled. Make sure you have a viable exit/recovery strategy in case that happens to you. Also remember that there is no free lunch even if the switch works without a seeming hitch. In order to give that RAM to Photoshop, you have to take it from Windows. The UserVA that you mentioned helps to mitigate the effects of that theft somewhat. Know also that you can edit the boot.ini to give you the option of running with or without the switch enabled. This is accomplished by means of a menu during boot up. It's also a legitimate recovery option in the event your computer and the switch can't coexist.
I use the switch, but ONLY when I expect to do a lot of heavy lifting in Photoshop. I shut down as many superfluous background apps as I can, including anti-virus and  my firewall. In other words, I don't push my luck by taxing the OS when running with the switch enabled. I would specifically not recommend using it for an everyday computing environment.
I suggest you read a little more before you make the move.
EDIT: Here's my boot.ini. DO NOT USE IT unless your disk and partition assignments are the same. I am posting this so you can see how to give yourself the option of selecting a config with or without the switch at boot time.

  • Select List Performance Issue in Apex 3.1.2

    Hi
It would of great help if you could suggest us for the following
We are facing some issues in Select List performance in Apex 3.1.2 version.
We have 6 select list and all have been cascaded i.e., values of each select list based on pervious list value.
Values in each select list are huge. Because of this, the performance is very slow.
It takes huge time to fetch the data based on other list values.
We cross verified in backend, the same query takes less time compared to the Application.
Any recommedation to fine tune this?
    Thanks in advance
    Vijay

if your select lists are very huge then it could be the browser that is causing the slow down.
try and create an example using a static HTML file containing a select list of the same size and you may find the same performance issue.
a quick way to create the test would be to save the source of your APEX page as a html file

  • Photoshop CS3 freezes on edit preferences performance

I know this is the Lightroom forum, but I could not get any help on the photoshop windows forum, and there are a ton of experts willing to help here, so I hope you will bear with me - thanks!
I have been having performance problems with photoshop CS3, where all types of activities become slower and slower. I tried to open the edit > preferences > performance dialog and this causes photoshop to immediately freeze without showing the performance dialog and photoshop eventually becomes "not responding" every time.
Is this a known issue? I have not been able to find any reference in my searches. I have updated the latest patch to CS3.
    Here is my system info:
    Adobe Photoshop Version: 10.0.1
    Computer: DellXPS710
Video: Nvidia GeForce 8600 GTS and Nvidia GeForce 7900GS
    Operating System: (Vista home premium)
System architecture: Intel CPU Family:6, Model:15, Stepping:7 with MMX, SSE Integer, SSE FP, SSE2
    Physical processor count: 4
    Processor speed: 2394 MHz
    Built-in memory: 2813 MB
    Free memory: 1515 MB
Memory available to Photoshop: 1659 MB
Memory used by Photoshop: 55 %
    Image cache levels: 6
    Application folder: C:\Program Files\Adobe\Adobe Photoshop CS3\
    Temporary file path: C:\Users\Rory\AppData\Local\Temp\
Photoshop scratch has async I/O enabled
    Scratch volume(s):
    K:\, 465.8G, 452.8G free
What I have tried so far:
    - Uninstall, run CS3clean script at level 1, reinstall CS3
    - Reset the preferences by deleting the preference file as per adobe documentation
    - I have only one printer installed, no network printers
    - Turn McAffee off (I think - it seems complicated to turn off)
    - Confirmed I have the latest nVidia drivers
    - Turned file indexing off on the scratch drive
    - In msconfig, I have turned off all startup items and system services, to no avail.
    - Run in safe start mode - THIS WORKED. As you can see in the specs I moved the scratch drive while in safe start mode, but this did not help.
Therefore I appear to have a conflict somewhere. All my other software, including Lightroom and Bridge are working fine.
I am going to test my memory next but it is unlikely to be the culprit since the safe start worked. Apparently Microsoft is releasing the Vista SP1 tomorrow, so I will update Vista.
Also, I would like to see if the nvidia drivers are causing the problem, but I do not know how to turn them off and use a generic video driver. If anyone can help of this please advise.
If anyone has any other suggestions I would be most grateful.
    Rory

    >Also, I would like to see if the nvidia drivers are causing the problem, but I do not know how to turn them off and use a generic video driver. If anyone can help of this please advise.
I am not sure that the actual Nvidia drivers cause problems; however, nview desktop manager was known to cause problems, but it only exists on Xp. If you really want to remove the drivers on Vista, then goto Control Panel -> System And Maintenance. In left panel pick Device Manager and in the devices screen expand Display Adapters. Right-click on the display adapter name and pick Uninstall. You will then need to re-boot.
Adobe also has an article on Optimising Photoshop on XP and Vista. In case you haven't seen it here is the reference:

  • How can I tune up WTK 2.5.2 performence except Preferences/Performance?

    Hi
Is there a way to tune up WTK 2.5.2 performence? I've already checked the Preferences/Performance. I'm developing J2ME application which uses a lot of icons etc. generaly it works ok. However when it comes to the screens with icons, the emulator is very slow :(. How can i change that. Maybe add more RAM to the emulator or something. My app doesn't need to work on real device so optimalization and other concerns are out of the question.
    Anybody knows the answer?
    thx

    Sorry, didn't see that part.
Anyway, in that case, you should profile your application to find out what part of your code is slow, and try to impove it

    Hey CarolinQc,
Thanks for the question. The symptoms you are experiencing can result from an Apple ID address that has been changed prior to signing out of all of the services. Before you change the email address associated with your Apple ID, you’ll want to sign out of all services to avoid this. As a fix, you can temporarily change your Apple ID back to the old address:
iOS 7: If you're asked for the password to your previous Apple ID when signing out of iCloud
    http://support.apple.com/kb/TS5223
    Change your Apple ID temporarily
If signing out and back in to iMessage or FaceTime didn't help, try these steps:
    1. Change your Apple ID to the Apple ID you used previously. You shouldn't need to verify the email address.
    2. Go to Settings > iCloud. Complete these steps only if the Find My [Device] setting is turned on:
              - Scroll down and tap Delete Account, then tap Delete to confirm.
              - Tap “Keep on My [Device]” or “Delete from My [Device].” In either case, your data remains in iCloud and will be updated on your device when you sign in to iCloud again.
              - Enter the password for your previous Apple ID.
    3. Change your Apple ID to the new email address that you want to use. You'll need to verify the email address.
    4. Return to Settings > iCloud and sign in with your new Apple ID.

  • SELECT query performance : One big table Vs many small tables

    Hello,
We are using BDB 11g with SQLITE support. I have a query about 'select' query performance when we have one huge table vs. multiple small tables.
Basically in our application, we need to run select query multiple times and today we have one huge table. Do you guys think breaking them into
multiple small tables will help ?
For test purposes we tried creating multiple tables but performance of 'select' query was more or less same. Would that be because all tables will map to only one database in backed with key/value pair and when we run lookup (select query) on small table or big table it wont make difference ?
    Thanks.

    Hello,
There is some information on this topic in the FAQ at:

If this does not address your question, please just let me know.

Process A : Stored Procedure #1(SP#1)
    DescriptorName
Indirect reference to the root database table that is being queried
Wizard updates automatically. Do not modify this manually.
    QueryName
Reference to the SELECT query inside the relational-to-XML mappings file
Wizard updates automatically. Do not modify this manually.
    IsQueryByExample

  • Joining select statements-performance problem

Here two cases are there. Is it posiible to combine the two cases and make it one? I am using OR in the select statement, performance is very bad, i want to improve it.Is there any chance of avoiding that...
    1.
select vbeln from vbfa into itab-vbeln where vbelv = final_data-xblnr1
    or vbelv = final_data-xblnr2.
select single vbeln from vbrk into tabvbrk-vbeln
where vbeln = itab-vbeln and fkart = 'RTS'.
    if sy-subrc eq 0.
    move tabvbrk-vbeln to final_data-vbeln1.
    modify final_data.
    endif.
    endselect.
    2.
select vbeln from vbfa into itab-vbeln where vbelv = final_data-xblnr1
    or vbelv = final_data-xblnr2.
select single vbeln from vbrk into tabvbrk-vbeln

    if sy-subrc eq 0.
    move tabvbrk-vbeln to final_data-vbeln2.
    modify final_data.
    endif.
    endselect.
    Thanks,
    fractal

The first main thing is dont use select... endselect.
select vbeln from vbfa into itab-vbeln where vbelv = final_data-xblnr1
    or vbelv = final_data-xblnr2.
    U can use
    select vbeln from vbfa into
    corresponding fields of table itab
    for all entries in final_data
    where vbelv = final_data-xblnr1
    or   vbelv = final_data-xblnr2.
    Instead of this
select single vbeln from vbrk into tabvbrk-vbeln
where vbeln = itab-vbeln and fkart = 'RTS'.
    if sy-subrc eq 0.
    move tabvbrk-vbeln to final_data-vbeln1.
    modify final_data.
    endif.
    endselect.
    Use
    select vbeln from vbrk
            appending table final_data
            where vbeln = itab-vbeln
            and fkart = 'RTS'.
    if sy-subrc eq 0.
    endif.
    Try like this.
    Hope this helps.
Kindly reward points for the answer which helped u and helped to solve the problem.

  • Comparing SELECTs for performance

I have a long-running function module and through SAT, I've identified its SELECT from BSEG as a potential hotspot and way that I can improve the run time, etc.
Through some research in SCN, I found I can/should use one of the component tables (BSID) to improve performance, but I don't know *how much* of an improvement it will be.
Rather than change the code of the FM and transport it to QA just to analyze performance gains, I was hoping there was some sort of tool that I could use to analyze separate code comparatively.
I thought of making 2 Quickviewer queries (one for BSEG and one for BSID) and then using ST05 to analyze each.  Is there a better way?
Basically in PRD, I'd like to compare isolated SELECTs for performance to see what gains I could make.
    Thanks
    Jeremy H.

You can find some interesting discussions linked here, some also talk about index access:
FAQ's, intros and memorable discussions in the ABAP Testing and Troubleshooting Space
Regarding your point 4), make sure your WHERE-condition contains as many fields of the index top down without gaps.
    Looking at BSID~4:
    MANDT
    Client
    BUKRS
    Company Code
    REBZG
Number of the Invoice the Transaction Belongs to
    REBZJ
Fiscal Year of the Relevant Invoice (for Credit Memo)
    REBZZ
Line Item in the Relevant Invoice
    KUNNR
    Customer Number
    UMSKS
    Special G/L Transaction Type
    REBZT
    Follow-On Document Type
MANDT will be included automatically. BUKRS is not very selective (not many distinct values), but you must include it since it is the leading field of the index. REBZG sounds like a selective field, so you can likely use the index effectively by having just BUKRS and REBZG in your WHERE-condition, but the more the better.
Also have a look at transactions DB05 and TAANA which can give you a good idea about the actual data distribution.

  • How can I Edit preferences performance use Graphics Processor option through the jsx script

Hi I need to check and access the Edit>preferences>performance>use Graphics Processor option setting through the script. i cant find it in the object domain, I have the following to check the current state:
    var ref = new ActionReference();
    ref.putEnumerated( charIDToTypeID('capp'), charIDToTypeID('Ordn'), charIDToTypeID('Trgt') );
    var openglEnabled = executeActionGet(ref).getObjectValue (charIDToTypeID('CchP')).getBoolean (stringIDToTypeID('openglEnabled'));

but then i am unable to set the value using this:
    var openglEnabled = executeActionGet(ref).getObjectValue (charIDToTypeID('CchP')).putBoolean (stringIDToTypeID('openglEnabled'));

If you load the scriptlisener plug-in when you set  your preference to enable your GPU it will record the code you need.  The Code I posted to your thread in the scripting forum the other day.

I've been given the job of decreasing the execution time of a select statement on a particular database consisting of a few lakh records. the premise is that not all of these records need to be searched through for a normal query. only audit reports need access to the entire table. the additional premise is that the separation of tables should be transparent to the program (no changes can be made to the code). given these premises, i've been toying with some ideas that have not helped me out.
    * Read about Fine Grained Auditing that kind of allow a trigger on select which would change the sql query to select from either the real or archive table( not sure if this will work either). But my production system uses oracle 8i. so no FGA :-(
    * thought of create/replace a view that would restrict the rows based on a cut off date. but this would require code changes to make select calls on the actual table whenever an audit is required.
Is there any way i can intercept a select call and make it select from one/ both of the tables based on the criteria (dates) issued in the call.
any other suggestions on this kind off transperant archiving is welcomed.

Do your queries have a WHERE clause? If so, and the table is partitioned by date, Oracle can implicitly eliminate all the older partitions.
If your queries are not currently limiting themselves to a particular date range, you could also create a parameterized view with sys_context. Without changing your application, you would need to ensure that there were different users for different roles (i.e. an audit user would have a login trigger that set up a different context than a login trigger for a normal user). If you can make small changes to your application, you could add a call to set the context whenever you want to change roles.

  • How to improve select stmt performance without going for secondary index

    Hi friends,
I have a select statement which does not contains key fields(Primary index) in where condition. And I have to improve that select stmt performance without going for the secondary indexes.
Can you plese suggest the alternative way for this?.
    Thanks in advance,
    Ramesh.

    Hi,
If , possible create a secondary index opf your own But if you have restriction on this, try to arrange the fields in where clause in the same order as they appear in the very table.
This will help the performance a bit.
Another issue, If your table doesn't contain any critical data or data in them are not updated frequently, you may go for Bufferring . it is a good alternate of Indexing with above limitations.
For details in bufferring , check, and all the sublinks.
