Semi-New Mac owner need help please!

I have had my Mac for a couple months now and I haven't experimented with all the applications yet, when I tried to open iChat all that it does is the little light underneath it turned on and nothing popped up. I don't know if I need to download anything else, or what... Can anyone help me please?!

It seems that others have pointed the Hosts to the Duplicates and this one's left.
I take it the issue is solved anyway ?

  • New mac owner needing help & advice

    Hi there , at long last I took the plunge and got a macbook, one of the new 2.2ghz ones in white. Just thought I would let you know. Anyway as this is my first experience of a mac , which also has a new OS for me to learn, I am probably going to ask loads of stupid, and what could seem obvious questions so let me apologize now. My first question is with regard to backing up my system,it looks as though this has to be done to an external HD does this need to be a dedicated HD or can it be shared with other items such as movies and music etc. I have also seen mention a program called carbon copy cloner being used for backup ,what is the difference between this and Time machine in leopard i.e. which is best. And as my laptop is going to be used in different places and i wont have the HD connected all the time will this affect any automatic backup set up.

    First let me say welcome aboard.
    Carbon copy cloner can make a bootable copy on a back up drive. Time Machine makes a copy that you can do a full recovery from if needed so in a way they're both good. I have used Time machine with a hard drive that had other stuff on it and it did not interfere with it. It was a partition with a bootable Tiger setup on. Time Machine filled almost all the space on the partition and I could still boot the Tiger copy. I have used Time Machine to recover from a complete mess up to just replacing one file. It has worked great.
    You don't have to worry about the Hard Drive being hooked up all the time. Time Machine will sense the drive is not there and stop until it is hooked back up and pick up right where it left off.
    As David said it is best to have a hard drive dedicated to Time machine but you can get by with one tht isn't.
    Don't worry about asking questions. Remember there are no stupid questions, only stupid answers.

  • New mac user needs help with default display

    hi, i am a new mac user and i accidentally changed the default display. I want to change it back to the default display but it doesnt seem like any of the options in "system preferences" - "display" change it back to the default out of the box display. please point me in the right direction. thank you!

    im talking about the screen resolution. I went under "system preferences" then clicked on "display" and somehow the mouse clicked on another resolution which stretched everything out. so I went threw all of the difference resolutions and nothing seems to be like the default one. am i missing something? thanks

  • New mac user needs help transfering files from Dell...

    I have a Dell running Windows XP and need help transfering the files from the dell to the mac.
    Also I have no idea what OP system I have, how do you tell which one you have???

    Go to the blue Apple menu and scroll down to "About this Mac"
    In the summary window that opens you will find the following information:
    Mac OS X version (assuming you are running OS X)
    Processor speed.
    Memory
    Startup disk
    The More Info button will take you to an in-depth overview of hardware, network set-up and installed software.
    As far as transference is concerned, you can either transfer files via CD, DVD, external hard drive... or by networking the two computers.
    Here's a link for an overview concerning Mac to PC connectivity:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=19652
    I hope the above helps.

  • New to code, need help please!!!

    I have been designing my first website by following a string of videos I have purchased online. (Timothy Training w/ Framework Files) I am finally to the point that I am ready to 'put' these file on my business catalyst account and get them online. I have run into an issue however. I have a page called services.html and within it I have built a 'featured content slider' that links to several pages. The code was working perfectly in any browser that I previewed it in, live view, inspections, everything was fine!! Until, I 'put' the files onto my business catalyst account, now all of the sudden the code does not display correctly anymore. I have made no changes to the code what-so-ever, no changes to the style sheets, nothing. I had a tech support guy that took a 'quick look' and said that my outer div was all of the sudden in the wrong place. I dont understand how 1. it shifted when I made no changes, 2. It works perfectly fine when I view it outside of BC platform and 3. how to even begin to fix the issue. I have spent hours upon hours trying to remedy this myself and I am finally at a breaking point and quite desperate for help. I have so many hours into this site and I am quite frustrated that I made it this far only for it to fail. Please anyone that is willing to take a look I would be grateful. I am not sure if I should post the code in here or not as this is my first post in the forum. I guess I will try to copy and paste and see if that works. Any suggestions would be great help.. Thank you so much!
    I will copy and paste the code in this order: (I think this is all the code needed to figure it out,I hope...)

    Services page is missing quite a bit of stuff.
    This code from a working page is correct:
    <link href="/StyleSheets/ModuleStyleSheets.css" type="text/css" rel="StyleSheet" />
    <script type="text/javascript">var jslang='EN';</script>
    <script type="text/javascript" src="../js/jquery.js"></script>

    <script type="text/javascript" src="../js/slider.js"></script>
    <script type="text/javascript">  // This is the script for the banner slider

    <link href="../css/print.css" rel="stylesheet" css" media="screen">
    <link href="../css/slider.css" rel="stylesheet" type="text/css" media="screen">
    In contrast, this is all you have in the <head> of your services.html page:
    <link href="/StyleSheets/ModuleStyleSheets.css" type="text/css" rel="StyleSheet" />
    <script type="text/javascript">var jslang='EN';</script>
    <script type="text/javascript" src="../js/jquery.js"></script>
    <link href="../css/styles.css" rel="stylesheet" type="text/css" media="screen">
    <link href="../css/print.css" rel="stylesheet" type="text/css" media="screen">
    If you reconcile those difference in your code, it should work.

  • New Mac User Needs help opening Microsoft office 2007 files on a Mac!!!

    I just got a used ibook G4. I had an old Pentium upgrade IBM before. I love my Mac, but I need my old school files form my IBM. I have OpenOffice.org 2.2 for Mac OS X 10.4.11 and I have a file converter program called X 11 that opens with a huge list of options for converting files, but it dose not say Microsoft offices 2007 it says the version numbers. I tryed the latest version and It wouldn't open in OpenOffice.org. Should I use Apple Script instead? I don't have Apple Works do I need it? I just want to look at the files. Why is there not a office viewer for Mac?

    You have Tiger. Tiger=10.4.x; Panther=10.3.x; Leopard=10.5.x.
    If you are trying with OpenOffice 2.2, it might be worth updating. I have version 2.4, which is the latest. Since 2.4 fixes a security issue, you should update if you plan to use the application anyway.
    NeoOffice, as a previous poster pointed out, should be able to open Office 2007 documents.
    See the discussion at http://user.services.openoffice.org/en/forum/viewtopic.php?f=5&t=4542 for the main OpenOffice thread discussing this issue. It discusses the ODF converter at sourceforge which NeoOffice uses to open Office 2007 documents. Apparently, you can use it with regular OpenOffice, too, but if 2.4 doesn't come with it (and maybe it does - I haven't checked), it might be easier to use NeoOffice for now.
    X11 is not a file converter, by the way. It is the traditional unix GUI. Apple provides a version of this for OS X which enables you to run applications which haven't been ported to the native OS X environment. OpenOffice for Mac OS X uses X11 as do some other applications, such as GIMP, which you may have heard of/used. NeoOffice is a version of OpenOffice ported to the native OS X environment (i.e. it doesn't have to use X11). I haven't used it in a long time - I always use OpenOffice on X11 - but it is supposed to be very good now and should seem very familiar if you're used to OpenOffice. If you can't get OpenOffice to work with your files, you should definitely try NeoOffice before buying MS Office - unless, of course, you especially want to send MS a few hundred of your preferred currency.
    The other thing you can try, if you've still got Office on your IBM machine is converting the files there by opening them and choosing "save as...". That should allow you to select an earlier version of Word/Excel/... which OpenOffice should have fewer problems with. Since you may lose formatting this way, try the other options first. (Also, if you have a lot of files, this option will be very annoying to implement.)
    I do not think AppleWorks is likely to help. (I'm not sure if AppleWorks is even still available... somebody?) There are some suggestions Pages might help, but I would personally try the other solutions first. (On the other hand, I have a very old version of Pages.)
    AppleScript is almost certainly not what you want. It has nothing to do with AppleWorks. It is a scripting language.
    Good luck,

  • Buying a new Mac Pro, need help with Screen

    Hello everyone, Im getting a Mac Pro, and I need a good lcd monitor to go with it. At the same time I would like to be able to have a LCD screen in my room to watch tv. Is it possible to watch tv with the Apple displays, any other displays or should I buy a LCD TV that has capabilities to be connected to a computer. I read a post that suggested a Dell screen to somebody for the purpose of watching tv.
    Please any advice would be appreciated.
    Gonzo

    Elgato <http://www.elgato.com> lets you watch a record TV programs on the Mac's screen.
    There are some non-Apple monitors with video, as well as DVI inputs. Some even contain TV tuners and speakers.
    Some TVs can be used as computer monitors but there are potential problems:
    Low resolution
    Overscan (menu bar and dock off the screen)
    Computer display not filling screen
    Non-square pixels
    Interlacing

  • New mac user, need help transferring music from external hard drive

    I am new to using a mac. I have had an iphone for almost a year so I am catching on quickly to my macbook but this problem has stumped me and all my mac using friends.
    I have a 500gb seagate external hard drive aswell as a new 500gb seagate internal.
    I transferred all my music from an old ipod onto the external hard drive. There is about 50gb of music.
    When I plug my external into my pc desktop I can see the music folder organized into subfolders with files inside that are encoded unless they are opened in itunes. My pc doesn't have enough internal memory to open and store my music library so I have just left it on the hard drive. When I plug the hard drive into my macbook it will show the music folder as having 50gb but when the folder is opened, none of the subfolders or files are visable.
    I went ahead and dragged the folder from my harddrive onto my desktop. It took about an hour to transfer all the files but now the folder is sitting on my desktop and when I open it, it is empty. If i look in the folders info, it says it has the 50gb. If i try to drag and drop it into itunes nothing happens. If I drag and drop it into the itunes music folder, it will go there but will not show up on itunes.
    I'm stumped and no longer eligable for apples telephone support as I bought this macbook from a friend. Any help would be greatly appreciated

    I have a couple of theories, but I'm not an iTunes expert. These people are, though:

  • New Mac user, need help accessing windows shares

    Hi All,
    I have a new MBP 13" and want to be able to easly access shared folder on my PC network. None of the PC's appear under the 'Shared' left menu in the finder, not even my aging eMac.
    I have successfully used connect to server and smb the pc name, but this seems to wok once, then when I go to reuse it, i can not access it again. deleting the save server favourite and rebooting works occasionally, however for the most part it is bery hit and miss. My thoery is that if you can access it once, you should be able to again and again.
    Obviously none of my pc's have any issues accessing the shares, it is just the mac . I have input the windows workgroup in the WINS section of Network Settings as well as my router ip address.
    Can anyone advise how to get the pc's to appear under the shared tab in the finder.
    At the moment, I am starting to regret buying the Macbook Pro, and really thought this type of issue would have been sorted out on the Mac side by now. But alas, it seems that I will just use windows 7 on the macbook pro until I can get this sorted. I can't not have access to windows data stores.
    Any help will be appreciated. I have tried to resolve this by viewing similar threads, but have not found a reliable solution yet.

    Really ... no-one can shed some light on this situation?
    Can someone at least recommend a forum where I can get some help.

  • Brand new Mac user, needs help getting Mac onto Wireless Print Server

    Ladies & Gents,
    After much struggle with PCs in the last two weeks I finally broke down and bought a MacBook. I'm very happy with it, but I am having issues getting hooked into my office's wireless printing network.
    The printer is an HP Color Laserjet 3600n and we're set up with a D-Link DPR 1260 router. I've tried just about everything I know, and even our much-more-qualified-than-I resident Mac user is unsure how to make this work.
    I will continue to search the forum, but I would appreciate any help. I should be off and on throughout most of the day. Thanks!

  • New MBP owner needs help with iTunes

    I just bought a new MBP and I have all of my music (iTunes) on my old Windows XP PC. There is about 100mb of music and I'd like to keep it all on that hard drive as I don't want to load up my MBP HD.
    I do want my MBP to be the main account for iTunes so I can make changes to tags and rating but I just want it to use the files on the networked HD. It is not necessary that I keep iTunes on the Win XP machine.
    One more thing, if possible, I would like to keep a copy of only my 4 & 5 Star rated songs on my MBP (about 10GB) for when I am away. I cannot figure out how to do this. I can sort them in iTunes or create a playlist for these but I don't know how to export copies of only those files. Does anyone know how I can do this?

  • New Mac user needs help restoring itunes.

    Recently converted from PC to Mac. Backed up my itunes music library on the PC and restored it to the Mac. Later found small percentage of songs somehow never got to the mac. Attempting to re-run the restore and am now receiving the error "Attempting to copy to the disk "Macintosh HD" failed. The disk could not be read or written to". I still have all the backup disks and the complete library on my ipod. Any help would be appreciated.

    If the complete library is on your iPod then the easiest way to resolve this is with Podworks
