Send variable to jsp

how would I send a variable from one jsp to another jsp?
eg:
String Name = rs.getString("fldFirstName");
to be retrived in the second jsp as ?
I know how to send a variable across via an input box with the submit button, but have had little success otherwise - I realise this is a very simple question - but any help would be appreciated ...
cheers

You can put the variable in the session and then u can retrieve its value in any other jsp's
in your first jsp store the variable in session
session.setAttribute("variableName",value);
in other jsp u can user getAttribute to get the value of this variable like
string value = (String)session.getAttribute("variableName");
Also there are some other ways to do it but it depends upon your requirement. Instead of storing this in session, you can also store it in the request object and forward that request to other page(depends if u want this)
hope it helps

  • How can i assign a Javascript variable to JSP variable

    Hi guys
    how i can assign a javascript variable to jsp expression.,
    e.g.,
    <input type = "button" value = "Add more" onclick = "return submitform1('<%=s%>')">
    function submitform1(String s)
          var s1 = s
    document.form1.action = "../intimation.do";    /* Here i want to pass the value s1 to jsp or servlets without using hidden fields and Query string*/
           document.form1.submit();
          return false;
    /*  i want to pass the values thru session whether it is possible */
    pls give sample code

    You don't have the session.
    All you have is HTTP.
    The only way to communicate from the client to the server is via an HTTP request. The only way to send a value like that is with a parameter.
    Using a form with method="submit" as mentioned will pass the parameters without displaying them in the url bar (is that what you wanted?)

  • How to set Header variables through Jsp

    Hi,
    Can anybody help me with the code.
    I need to send user id in http header variable from jsp to a third party tool, which will read user id from the http header.
    i am tryng to test if ui can set the variable using th efollowing code
    <%response.addHeader("REMOTE_USER" ,"user1"); %>
    and to get that i am using response.getHeader("REMOTE_USER");
    The header variable is not set.
    can you let me know if is possible , can we set user defined header variables??
    Any help will be highly appreciated
    Thanks in advance

    Hi,
    If you'd like to send some additional headers from your jsp it would make sense to add it to your request than the response. Unfortunately, neither a servlet or jsp is allowed to modify the request object. You would need to write a filter to achieve this.
    See the below url for more information on creating filters.

  • Passing variables to jsp

    In what all ways we can pass variables to jsp??
    I got one arraylist in my servlet(controller) and i have to send it to jsp page(view)...
    one way of doing it is trough "session", is there any other way??
    if yes .. which one is better??

    Hi,
    You can store your variable in 3 scopes in servlet and in 4 scopes in JSP
    In Servlets you can do it in the following ways.
    request scope
    session scope
    context scope
    In Jsp you can do it in the following ways
    request scope
    session scope
    context scope
    and page scope
    Request scope means, you can maintain the state only when the request is alive.
    Session scope means, you can maintain the state only when the session is alive
    similarly context , you can maintain the state only when the context is alive.
    page scope is just for page.
    I hope , you want these details. :)
    bye for now

    Hi Mariano,
    I'm using JSP presentation too. In "Interactive Component Call" active i'm using "Use JSP presentation", but i only can define one instance variable, i need to add more instance variables. In "Advanced" option of this task, i have the argument mapping .. but i don't understand how to use it.
    I have a instance variable called "genders" of the type String[Int] (Associative Array) and i'm mapping this instance variable in "Arguments Show In" option of the advanced option of JSP presentation. In JSP presentation i have the code:
    <select <f:fieldName att="person.gender"/>>
                   <c:forEach var="gender" begin="0" items="${genders}" varStatus="status">
                        <c:choose>
                             <c:when test="${person.gender == gender}">
                                  <option value="<c:out value="${gender}"/>" selected="true"><c:out value="${gender}"/></option>
                             </c:when>
                             <c:otherwise>
                                  <option value="<c:out value="${gender}"/>"><c:out value="${gender}"/></option>
                             </c:otherwise>
                        </c:choose>
                   </c:forEach>
              </select>And in my screenflow i have the code:
    genders[0] = "Male"
    genders[1] = "Female"But when i run my application, i have the error: "The task could not be successfully executed. Reason: 'java.lang.ClassCastException: java.lang.Integer'."
    What's the problem?

  • Using JSTL variables in JSP or Javascript. Possible ?

    Hi All,
    Is it possible to share or use the variables which are declared are used by JSTL in JSP expression or scriplet code and in Java Script.
    Example:
    This Works:
    <fmt:set var="test" value="JSTL" />
    <fmt:out value="${test}" />
    But, this gives error:
    <% out.println(test) %>
    And passing the value of variable 'test' to Java Script code also gives error.
    How to use JSTL variables in JSP and in Javascript ?
    Yours,
    Sankar.B

    By default, JSTL variables are kept in servlet
    attributes. Default is to store it in the page
    context. You can make it request/session/application
    scope as required by an attribute of the set tag.Hi there,
    Can anyone advise how to access JSP variables in JSTL?
    Can it be done as the same method through request/session/application scope?

    For example...

    How can i do that ??
    Thanks

    >I want to assign the value of a Javascript variable to JSP Variable
    cannot be done.Friend try to understand concepts properly Javascript is always excuted by the browser @clientside where as JSPCode is executed Websever(ServletContainer) @serverside.Through you are combining JSP Code blocks(Tags,Expressions,scriptlets...) & javascript under a single page webserver can only identify what is their under JSP Code blocks.
    Hope this could be an appropriate answer for your question.
    However,you can as well submit a request by encoding your URL with request parameters and the submit to the page and then collect it using request.getParameter(name).
    But under a single context state it is not possible
