Sending in for repair...

My HD makes some odd noises on my new C2D. So I'm thinking about taking it to the Apple store and having them send it in to replace the HD.
My problem is I'm very OCD about scratches or marks of any sort on my laptop. I don't want to send this thing in and get it back with a new HD and some marks as well. Anyone know how likely it is that my case will get some marks or scratches if I send it in for a new HD?
Also... any chance they'd be able to transfer my files from the old HD to the new one when they switch it?
Thanks.

I got mine back with no new scratches. I assume that they would try at least to get your files over. As always, I'd do a back up before you send it in.

  • ORS parcel carrier? Also, think twice when you wanna send in for repair ! =)

Today, I got an email that my TP is being shipped back by ORS with tracking number. However, I'm trying to look for ORS and have no idea who/where this company is after spending 15mins on google/bing/yahoo . I know of USPS, UPS, DHL, Fedex, OnTrac, etc. .. but shame on me ! Can someone enlighten me ? =p

Updated: got my TP fixed now, but they put in worse battery 5500mAH vs the old one 6300mAh, rotation "sometimes" spins nonstop I gotta use the lock feature. So, to whoever got your TP with minor issues and want to send in for repair.. you should think.. a zillion of times !!!

Hi again.  Some info to pass on to you.  I've called and chatted with the warranty repair people countless times.  Your touchpad is basically in "limbo" from what I've gathered.  Their tracking system is showing it as "shipped", even though it has not.  They will not take initiative to correct their own system so as far as HP is concerned they fufilled thier warranty repair obligation to you.  I've tried speaking with them about this issue but their customer support only seems to want to get people off chat, and off the phone.  I've been trying to resolve this since Friday evening. I've been promised phone calls, emails, shipments etc since then as well but 5 days later nothing has changed.  I'm going to be at them all day until I get info, when I do I'll pass it along to you.

Sorry, there is nothing you can do.
FYI: Damage like that is not covered by warranty, & all Apple will offer you is an out of warranty replacement...cost, in the US, for an iPhone 4, is US $149.

  • Full HD backup before sending in for repair-software recommended/how-to?

    Hi all,
I have to send my MacBook 2GHz Intel Core 2 Duo running 10.4.11 in for a warrantied repair to the CD/DVD drive (MATSHITA DVD-R UJ-857D). It just doesn't want to read discs anymore and has always been a bit finicky. There are a few other issues too like the finder crashing a lot. I've already had one logic board replacement on this machine and have been putting up with the finder issues as it is inconvenient to be without it for a week, but the optical drive issue has to be fixed....anyway...I digress....
Can someone please advise me on what software would allow me to completely back up (clone???) my HD before I send it in for repair? I have a 160gb firewire 400 drive for the task.
I'll probably need some help getting the data from the external to my MacBook when I get it back as well.
Many thanks for any suggestions/help/detailed directions/the lot......

  • I need to backup my hard drive before sending it for repair, How?

My macbook will not turn on but my hard drive is still in good condition.
When I went to the genius bar the employee said something about a hard drive kit I could use to backup my files and such before sending it in.
I own an external hard drive, how can I transfer my files from my macbook's hard drive into my external hard drive before sending the computer in for repair?

    Hi...use Carbon Copy Cloner....
    http://www.macupdate.com/info.php/id/7032/carbon-copy-cloner
...it will make an exact clone of your MacBook's current drive on the external and allow you to reload it on your new internal after it is installed....it is very easy to use...

  • Spare materials sending out for repair

    All,
    Pls see the scenario :
This is a project in Egypt .
Spare materials , for some repairs business will send outside the factory to some vendors for repair .
After repair same material will take back .
    1. Whether this is subcontracting or comes in services ?
    2. Whether we can use (parts provided to vendor ) ?
    Kindly advise.
    regards,

    Hello Sandeep,
Yes, absulately this is subcontracting scenario.
In my previous project, the client use to send Machine shaft for polishing purpose so we applied the same scenario, but without split valuation.
In you case, the final product and component product can be the same or you can use split valuation as suggested by Manish.
When you create the purchase order for subcontracting put the material number as final product and also as component (qty will be the same). We are just paying for service.
If you use service order then you want be able to track the qty of material which is provided to the vendor.
    Hope this helps.

  • How to package monitor when sending off for repair

Dear members of this forum, I have today arranged for my monitor to be sent off to an Acer repair centre in Telford after I found the display had some issues - namely a noticeable white blotch on the screen and dark edges). I have the 21.5" model of this monitor - for some reason Amazon removed my version. Unfortunately I no longer have the boxes that the monitor came in so I wanted to ask you how I should go about packaging the item to ensure it is delivered safely without any damage whatsoever. Could somebody also please confirm whether I need to send off all the cables it came with as well? I had no use for the VGA cable, so I do not know where it is. HDMI cables were not provided. Would it be okay to send off only the 1. Monitor and 2.Power Cable? It would be very helpful if you guys could give me dimensions of the box the monitor came in. Also, any advice as to where I could get the cardboard boxes and bubble wrap too. Thank you for your time, I look forward to your replies.

Here's the weblink with information to package the product to ship it in for repairs.http://acer.custhelp.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/32900/kw/repair/related/1You do not need to use the orginal box, you may use a plain box.You do not need send the vidoe cables. You may send the power cord if the monitor has power issues so that it would be replaced if defective.  Click the Kudos to say “Thanks” for helping! select "Accept Solution" if your issue is resovled.

  • Send back for Repair?  Heat.  Firmware.  RAM.

Any experienced MacBook Pro users out there who can help me with my situation?
    1. Brand new 17" MacBook Pro arrives (after waiting over a month from MacMall) and I install 1GB of EdgeCorpTech RAM, run Software Update, and install Final Cut Studio 5.1 (Universal) and run Software Update again.
    2. Start working and during an encode in DVD Studio my brand new expensive Mac crashes. Tried about 7 times over and over again, each time either rebooting or hard locking.
    3. The heat! The area above the keys is so hot you could burn yourself. The more it works, the more it heats. I hear no fans trying to cool it down, but then they might be very quiet. (I've heard the fans in an older PowerBook, and they are really loud. Are these supposed to be similar?) I've read a lot about this issue, and thought it might be why my system was crashing. I've also read that it's a "feature" where it acts as a heat sink. When I called Apple, they asked me a bunch of questions like they were taking a police report, and told me I needed to send it in for repair, but I would like to avoid doing that. If it runs this hot and the surface is a heat sink above the keys, I guess I'll just put up with it; when you're cooking you keep your hands off the frying pan! Think different, right?
    4. I removed the 1GB of Edge RAM and no more crashes. It successfully encoded and it seems to be working, but the heat issue remains. I'm sending in the RAM for exchange. (Now I'm reading that someone else had this issue and that it may be the system having 2GB installed, regardless of the brand. I'll be able to test this in a few days when I get the new RAM.)
    5. I puchased this Mac for a job, so I really don't want to be without it since I lost money waiting for it to arrive. Not only would I have received my order weeks ago had I ordered it from Apple, but Apple tells me they would have sent me a new one since I'm having this type of issue. Since I purchased it from MacMall, however, I was told I needed to contact them about it. I did, and MacMall is horrible. They tell me they have a "no return policy" on this. So they charge me brand-new price for a system that may need to be refirbished? They told me I needed to contact Apple. That's the last time I order from MacMall.
    6. Apple sends me a shipping box to send it back for repair. I will be without it for 1-2 weeks. They also tell me I can go in and speak to a tech at one of their retail stores. I call the store to see if there's a tech available and they tell me I would need to come in to find out. Sheesh.
    7. I'm hearing that a firmware or SMC update may do the trick. I have the following now:
    Boot ROM Version: MBP12.0061.B00
    SMC Version: 1.5f8
I called Apple support back 3 times and spoke to 3 different people. So far no one at Apple tech support has been able to tell me if I have the latest version.
    To recap, my questions are:
Is this kind of heat normal?
Do I have the latest firmware?
    Should I have it repaired?
If so, should I send it in or take it to the Apple Store?
Any help would be appreciated. Thanks!
    MacBook Pro 17"   Mac OS X (10.4.6)

    Thanks, people.
I'm worried about sending it back not just because I'll be without it but also because I've read horror stories about how they ding it up during repairs.
Do firmware updates go through Software Update? I've heard they don't, and if there's a new version my Software Update is not finding one. I can't find any info on the Apple site, and Apple Support reps don't know either.
If the heat is more of an issue with me than it is with the system, I can put up with it. Since the Apple Support reps can't even tell me what the latest firmware version is, perhaps they don't really know how hot the 17" MacBook Pro is supposed to run..?
When I ran the hardware test before, I didn't notice the fans running at full blast. I usually notice that sort of thing. Maybe my fans are not working. I will run the test again and make sure to pay more attention. Does anyone know if the fans on the 17" run more softly than the others? Also, to notice this, would I need to run the full test or just the quick one? I'll try both...
Thanks again for all your help and advice...

  • Does Apple store replace or send off for repair a deffective iphone?

Purchased on release day and wifi does not work. I anm going to the apple store today for an appointment. I have restored it. Will they replace it or send it of for repair?
    Thanks

When the iPhone was first released, there was no refurbished inventory available and if there was a problem within the first 14 days or so after an iPhone was purchased, an exchange at the store was pretty much automatic.
Now that some time has passed - if the store personnel are unable to repair it, your iPhone will be sent off to AppleCare to be inspected and tested for possible repair or replacement with a new or refurbished iPhone at Apple's discretion depending on inventory on hand - along with a loaner iPhone offered and provided by the store if needed/wanted.
The Store Manager may have some flexibility in this regard but an exchange with a new iPhone off the shelf at a store is not automatic.

  • Backing up before sending in for repair.

I have a MacBook Pro 17" and need to send it in to get repaired. My question is what's the best way to back up my data? I have an external HD. My MBP came w/OSX 10.4 but I bought 10.5 and installed it, so I assume when i get it back it'll probably be whiped and have 10.4 installed.
Should I use Time Machine to back it up, then when I get it back, install 10.5 then use Time Machine to restore everything I had? Or should I copy all my stuff to the HD then copy it back on the new machine after installing 10.5? Or should I get a trial of .mac, and use the backup utility it come with instead?

    Mark,
Yes, a Time Machine backup is all one needs to completely restore everything. I have to disagree with JoeyR on this one. Restoring from Time Machine is, in fact, a good deal less involved than using "clones."
A clone is going to require an additional hard drive, or at the very least an additional partition on an existing hard drive. This, in turn, may require the purchase of an additional device to accommodate the additional disk space needed. Then, you have to find and use the cloning software, learning how to use it in the process.
If, instead, you simply use Time Machine, all that will be required is that you boot to your Leopard install disk, connect the Time Machine backup drive, and choose "Restore From Time Machine Backup" from the "Utilities" menu. Once that's done, the restoration proceeds based on the speed of your external drive. In my case (with a FW 800 drive), that means about 30 minutes for a restoration of around 50 GBs. A "clone" will take no less time, given the same speed drive.
For heaven's sake, just use Time Machine and forget about making things harder than they need be.

  • Address to send ipods for repair?

what is the US address you send IPODs that need to be repaired? Is this sent to you in the elusive second email Apple is supposed to send you? Or is this common knowledge that can be looked up somewhere?

As llaass said, contact Apple Support. Normally they will send you a box in which to ship the iPod to them for replacement. Said box will come with a pre-addessed shipping label. Or if you have an Apple Store in your area, make an appointment with them and they can replace your iPod on the spot.
