Sendmail and tcp_wrappers
Hi all,
According to the documentation, in solaris 10 access to sendmail should be controllable through tcp_wrappers, but I can't seem to get it to work like it should.
I've edited the /etc/hosts.allow to this:
sendmail: 127.0.0.1
But when I try and connect from another machine it still allows me access:
[user@othermachine ~]$ telnet box 25
Trying 10.37.5.91...
Connected to box.
Escape character is '^]'.
220 box ESMTP Sendmail 8.13.6+Sun/8.13.6; Mon, 24 Apr 2006 14:57:08 +0200 (MEST)
I've used truss on the sendmail process, and can see it actually opening /etc/hosts.allow:
507: open("/etc/hosts.allow", O_RDONLY) = 6
507: fstat64(6, 0xFFBFCF58) = 0
507: fstat64(6, 0xFFBFCE00) = 0
507: ioctl(6, TCGETA, 0xFFBFCEE4) Err#25 ENOTTY
507: read(6, " s e n d m a i l : l o c".., 8192) = 122
507: read(6, 0x0016B71C, 8192) = 0
507: llseek(6, 0, SEEK_CUR) = 122
507: close(6) = 0
507: open("/etc/hosts.deny", O_RDONLY) = 6
507: fstat64(6, 0xFFBFCF58) = 0
507: fstat64(6, 0xFFBFCE00) = 0
507: ioctl(6, TCGETA, 0xFFBFCEE4) Err#25 ENOTTY
507: read(6, " A L L : A L L\n s e n d".., 8192) = 21
507: llseek(6, 0xFFFFFFFFFFFFFFF3, SEEK_CUR) = 8
507: close(6) = 0
507: fstat(4, 0xFFBFD338) = 0
507: time() = 1145882218
507: getpid() = 507 [475]
507: putmsg(4, 0xFFBFC9F0, 0xFFBFC9E4, 0) = 0
507: open("/var/run/syslog_door", O_RDONLY) = 6
I've also installed the latest sendmail patch ( 122856-01 ).
If anyone can shed some light on this i'd be appreciated.
Thanks in advance!
Just went through this with support. Sendmail should use tcp wrappers by default.
Check:
If you run the command:
# /usr/lib/sendmail -d0.1 < /dev/null
Does the output show tcpwrappers as it does below:
# /usr/lib/sendmail -d0.1 < /dev/null
Version 8.13.4+Sun
Compiled with: DNSMAP LDAPMAP LOG MAP_REGEX MATCHGECOS MILTER MIME7TO8
MIME8TO7 NAMED_BIND NDBM NETINET NETINET6 NETUNIX NEWDB NIS
NISPLUS PIPELINING SCANF STARTTLS TCPWRAPPERS USERDB
USE_LDAP_INIT XDEBUG
*** Now, the meat... if tcp wrappers is indicated as above, connect & try mail from command. sendmail always allows the connection, but if blocked by wrappers, mail from will be disallowed. It's not intuitive, since other tcp wrappers don't allow any connection when a host is denied. And, Sun ought to document better, since we're counting on them!
E.g. (mconnect is Solaris command, like telnet to port 25, actual info changed to protect us):
mconnect mailserver
connecting to host mailserver (10.1.1.25), port 25
connection open

What are cron and sendmail and how do I stop them?
I am running Mavericks on a MacPro with 16 GB of RAM and a 1 TB hybrid drive. After installing the latest OS update (10.9.3), I noticed that the computer was running a bit sluggishly. I checked the activity monitor and found that my system CPU usage was above 90%, sometimes rising as high as 98%. There was no single process with a large CPU usage percentage but there are quite a few (ten or more each) root processes that run around 20% to 30% each or so--most of them are cron or sendmail. I tried stopping some of these and it helped for a while but after a while they were running again and I was back to a 95% or so CPU load. I tried rebooting but it did not help. Any suggestions?
Here it is.

How can I get sendmail to read etc/hosts when I boot our solaris machine?
Hi
The order of name lookups depends on what has been set in the file /etc/nsswitch.conf.
Usually the name lookup will first take place in /etc/hosts, then DNS
the entry in /etc/nsswitch.conf will look like this:
hosts: files dns
During the boot process, the hosts file is used to configure the basics of the host so that it
can get up and running on the network. Sendmail will start at run level 2 after any name service
is running, but will resolve itself with the local host file if the setup is as above.
If your post is regarding the "unable to qualify my own domain name - using short name"
message that gets posted to /var/adm/messages, you will need to put a fully qualified domain
name into the /etc/hosts file.

Request: Sendmail and telnet client
Really would like sendmail as we use it at work. I am playing with exim now but 1 mta is enough to get lost in.
Also need a different telnet client. I see that there are 2 listed, but one of them requires xinetd (don't need - don't want), and the other (putty) dosen't play well with exim. Seems that putty creates a SMTP protocol violation when it connects to port 25 - exim dosen't respond. Seems to work with sendmail though.
-ShawnTry ssh to port 25... it won't work.
-Shawn
Lifted from yolinux.com:
This is a sample of the dialog an e-mail client makes when connecting to an SMTP server for sending mail:
telnet server-name 25 - SMTP communicates on port 25. See: /etc/services
HELO your-domain - This identifies the source of the mail.
HELP - List the SMTP commands that are supported. (Included FYI and not part of a typical dialog)
MAIL FROM: your-email-address
RCPT TO: recipient-email-address
DATA - End of DATA section is punctuated with a single dot on it's own line.
Subject: E-mail-Subject
Text of e-mail goes here
. - The single dot
QUIT
SMTP return codes let the e-mail client know if all went well.
See: RFC 822 for more information. -
Disabling sendmail once and for all
So I'm trying to turn on sendmail on a Solaris10 box, and is run a disable sendmail and the processes die, but then they start back up. Why is this happening and what do I do to make it stop restarting?
I guess that a process (such as cron) tried to send an email, hence a sendmail was started to take care of it.
My tips is that you check the logs to see what its trying to do and who invoked it. Also ensure that sendmail is capable of delivering root mails and such locally to /var/mail/root .

BT email address and Joomla! settings
Hi all,
please help as nothing I've tried seems to work. I've built a site in Joomla! and have now created a form. I should be receiving emails from anyone filling out the form but am not and despite filling in all permutations I can think of I can't seem to get this to work. The form itself is completing as I can go to the admin end of the site and manually check, but it really should be sending the emails too!
Has anyone used Joomla with Bt's settings and if so what have you put in the following fields: (PS this is in the global config section - server - Mail Settings...
Mail Tab:
Mailer: Select the method that is to be used to send e-mails from the web site. Select from the choices in the drop down list:
PHP mail function
Sendmail
SMTP Server
Mail From: Enter the e-mail address that will appear on all e-mails sent out by the web site. For example [email protected]
From Name: Enter the name that will appear in the From field on all e-mails sent out by the web site. For example: The Admin Team; The Web Master;
Sendmail Path: This field displays the path to the Sendmail program on the host. This field is only used if the Mailer field is set to Sendmail and the mail server is running the Sendmail program.
SMTP Auth: Select Yes if SMTP Authentication is required by the host mail server. This field is only used if the Mailer field is set to SMTP Server.
SMTP User: If SMTP Authentication is required by the host mail server, enter the Username for the account. This field is only used if the Mailer field is set to SMTP Server and the SMTP Auth field is set to Yes.
SMTP Pass: If SMTP Authentication is required by the host mail server, enter the Password for the account. This field is only used if the Mailer field is set to SMTP Server and the SMTP Auth field is set to Yes.
any help would be greatly appreciated!fungalpis wrote:
Is it possible to do this with the new BT email service?
Someone on the BT Residential Customer Support Community Forum managed to subscribe to a premium BT email service, keep their existing btinternet.com address for a small fee, and then migrate to a different ISP.
Clearly, ISPs will discourage a lot their customers from migrating if they cannot keep their existing email addresses.
Might that also be seen as some form of unfair practice, in terms of restricting competition?
Hi.
The Premium email service is not ceasing, otherwise "they" wouldn't be informing those on old legacy payg or basic email to either move the address to their BT broadband account (if relevant) or pay 1.60 to keep the address.
This service has been around for years.
Not sure your last comments are relevant - since it's up to the user to move as they wish. Obviously an ISP email tie-in is, however, relevant - but this doesn't stop BTinternet users from keeping their address if they move elsewhere (for that fee). I don't know if other ISPs have this sort of facility.
If people chop & change frequently, then it would make sense to only use a non ISP email address, e.g. their own domain, gmail, hotmail, (even Yahoo) if they so wish.

Email server - sendmail used for outgoing only?
an earlier poster indicated that sendmail for NT is only used for outgoing emails from the Oracle email server. Is this true? If so I should be able to use the Indigo sendmail for a proof-of-concept (30 free trial). Can't find any free trial for sendmail for NT.
However, the email server IG seems to have me changing the sendmail.cf file to point at the Oracle email system - seems to imply that inbound messages run thru sendmail and are forwarded to Oracle. In which case the Indigo send-only won't work.
What did everyone else do? By a copy of sendmail for NT at $500, or run on unix? Other alternatives?Would you please confirm what email you are trying to use with iPhoto, you still have not.
Is it an iCloud account or from some other provider?
it would prompt me to set up an iCloud account, which I believe I already have.
To find out if you actually have an iCloud account go to www.icloud.com and try to login. -
Turning off sendmail on Solaris 10
I don't see the usual rc.x startup and shutdown scripts to start or stop send mail.
how do I stop the sendmail daemon?I wanted to post a solution I found for only
sending mail NOT receiving.Apart from simply blocking port 25 in the firewall ?
1.) So we vi /lib/svc/method/smtp-sendmail
and comment out line 81
that's the daemon line. NOTE:The line 82 with -AC is
responsible for checking queue we leave alone.This is a very bad example. You should never start messing in system files like that since there is no way for you to be sure that your changes will survive some security or update patch. -
OEM in Linux and Unix Memory difference on Deployed OC4J Container
I have 2 Oracle 9iAS environments 1 each for production and test.
My Prod servers are on AIX (Unix)
My Test server is on Linux
Under Enterprise Manager If I create an OC4J container exactly the same in both and deploy an application exactly the same in both could someone tell me why the memory usage display is widely different - on linux its much more used than on unix?
Perplexing.The code gets pretty messy as I have both a SendMail and MailMessage class that I use. Basically for not authenticated messages (I need authenticated), the example on metalink Doc ID: Note:234490.1 with subject "Mail Service Setup" is what I used to get this going.
I updated the local application.xml file located in C:\jdev1012\jdev\system10.1.2.2.0.1929\oc4j-config\application.xml
<mail-session location="mail/mailsession" smtp-host="my.mail.server">
<property name="mail.transport.protocol" value="smtp"/>
</mail-session>
On a datapage, I have a button with event_Email. In the action class I have an onEmail() method that calls the code to create a message and send it with the email transport.
In my libraries in JDeveloper, I created one called JavaMail which has activation.jar and mail.jar. This is added to the project.
Everything works fine when running locally. The problem is in deployment. The OC4J container that I deploy to has a java2.policy file. At first the classpath, and the location in the policy file for mail.jar and activate.jar were not the same. I updated the policy file to use the files in the classpath. Since mail.jar and activate.jar on the OAS server are in the classpath, I didn't include these files in the deployment.
When trying to run, I don't get any messages, just a 500 Error.
If I try to implement a policy file on the local OC4J in JDeveloper, I get lots of problems, and I gave up on that route.
Hope that adds more info. Thanks, Ken -
/etc/hosts vs DNS & sendmail
Hi All,
I have a question about how /etc/hosts & DNS work on a solaris 9 box.
When I have entries in /etc/hosts that are not in DNS and I run say nslookup the utility will not find the ip. Put if I ping the entry in /etc/hosts it will find it. Basically I have a box with default sendmail and in /etc/hosts I have a entry with mailhost added to it at the end. nslookup does not find the box ping does and sendmail can't send mail to it and I can not verify that it ever worked correctly.
1) what is up with nslookup no seeing /etc/hosts?
2) can sendmail send to hosts per FQDN listed in /etc/hosts & use a DNS server at the same time?
thanks
-imWhen I have entries in /etc/hosts that are not in DNS
and I run say nslookup the utility will not find the
ip. Correct. nslookup and /etc/hosts are controlled by /etc/nsswitch.conf.
Files says to search /etc/hosts.
Anything else says to use that name service.
Put if I ping the entry in /etc/hosts it will
find it.If it is in /etc/hosts and /etc/nsswitch.conf says to search /etc/hosts.
and in /etc/hosts I have a entry with mailhost added
to it at the end. nslookup does not find the box ping
does and sendmail can't send mail to it and I can not
verify that it ever worked correctly. Sendmail can be compiled to use or disregard name server lookups in addition to the /etc/nsswitch.conf file.
sendmail -v e-mail_addr, should show you some basic diagnostics.
1) what is up with nslookup no seeing /etc/hosts?That's the way it works.
2) can sendmail send to hosts per FQDN listed in
/etc/hosts & use a DNS server at the same time?sure, see /etc/nsswitch.conf and the sendmail compile time options.

Patch 142437 (Sendmail 8.14.4) broken?
After installation of Patch 142437-05 (and newer) and therefore upgrading to sendmail 8.14.4, I cant get sendmail to bind on all interfaces. Removing the patch and downgrading to 8.13.8 resolves the issue.
Normally, you specify where to bind to with the following line in sendmail.cf:
{noformat}DaemonPortOptions=Port=smtp,Addr=127.0.0.1, Name=MTA{noformat}
Omitting the "Addr=127.0.0.1", sendmail should bind on all interfaces (as written in the docs). However, without Addr= sendmail binds to 127.0.0.1, as long as I dont specifiy another valid IP address of the server, in which case it binds there.
Sendmail 8.13.8 behaves this normally (binding to *:25), 8.14.4 not.
Did I miss something, or is the current version of sendmail broken?are you saying to re-create /etc/default/sendmail and place MODE=bd inside ? I no longer have the /etc/default/sendmail file. What I ended up doing was hacking the /lib/svc/method/smtp-sendmail.
from:
local=`/usr/bin/svcprop -p config/local_only $SMF_FMRI 2>/dev/null`
if [ $? -eq 0 -a "$local" = "true" ]; then
MODE="-bl"
fi
to:
local=`/usr/bin/svcprop -p config/local_only $SMF_FMRI 2>/dev/null`
if [ $? -eq 0 -a "$local" = "true" ]; then
MODE="-bd"
fi
svcadm enable sendmail
ps -ef |grep sendmail
root 3300 1 0 16:20:38 ? 0:00 /usr/lib/sendmail -bd -q15m
root 3301 3300 0 16:20:38 ? 0:00 /usr/lib/sendmail -bd -q15m
This works even if the svcprop of config/local_only is set to false, very bizzare. -
Relay denied exception!! Why can i do the same with sendmail???
Hi,
Everytime I try to send email from my code, I get the following exception:
class javax.mail.SendFailedException: 550 5.7.1 <[email protected]>... Relaying denied
But if I try to use sendmail and send email to the same address with the same SMTP host, it will work!
So, r there some parameters that i need to set, or some settings that I missed in order for this to work?
My local SMTP does not need auth. and the code works fine for any mail sent to the internal mail box.
Please advise.
Thank you.Many mail servers are configured to prevent mail from being sent if the originating email address is not in the domain.... other wise they have to authenticate before being allow to be sent.
You might want to look into this as a possible solution....
Transport tx = session.getTransport("smtp");
tx.connect(host, username, password);
tx.sendMessage(msg, msg.getAllRecipients());

}you can easily verify that the messages do or don't exist by opening the files and checking. you should do this so you know whether you need to reconstruct from that folder, or if perhaps the data is elsewhere.
Did you move your mailstore from it's default location?
You can look in the mailbfr script or man page to see what exactly it does. In brief:
mailbfr -o repairs permissions of the mail db and store folders.
mailbfr -f reconstructs the database. It uses the same routine apple suggests, but automates it (lessening chance for error)
To get more help, make sure you find out whether the mail exists in the mail store (or not). This decides which path to take.

OEL 5.3 hangs on starting on sendmail
Hi,
I used for long time RHEL 4.2 and other distros (Slackware, Debian) and never saw this behaviour.
When I change the network settings the system hangs on sendmail and some times when I change network settings it hangs on startx or init 5 giving a black screen.
Commonly I experienced that systems comes up anyway and an X restart (ctrl alt backspace) restores X.
I think this behaviour is not common ( I suppose it coulb the same on a RHEL friend distro).
Any suggestion to avoid this behaviour?
Thanks
Fabio D'AlfonsoSendmail (and the sendmail helper/companion) will hang 1 minute if the hostname set is not a FQDN, but an hostname without the domain.
If you want it running only locally (thus do not need a domain suffix), try setting the hostname to hostname.local instead of hostname, and update it in /etc/hosts accordingly.
