Sent mail lost. Not in sent, not in draft, not in outbox!

Hi,
I use IMAP with a gmail account.
I find myself a few times sending e-mails and a few minutes later I check that the mail has not been sent, and it's not in draft either. There is no outbox either, not even showing an outbox. When I check activity down to the left I see "Incoming messages 10 from 23" (or any number) kind of halted, at 0 kb/s... then I need to close mail and open mail again, but my sent messages have been lost!
Then I go to Gmail and the mails are not there. Lost.
This happened a few times, not too much. But that thing of incoming messages halted at 0kb happens EVERY DAY. If I go to Gmail I have a few new e-mails, but my mail is halted. Any thoughts???
Thanks

I am having the identical problem w/ Mail on a 10.5.2 system using IMAP
It has happened twice that I know of- mails reached the recipients but do not exist anywhere else- i have grepped all of the files on the server as well, so they are definitely not getting saved.
our mail setup is bincimap 1.2.13, vpopmail 5.4.24, qmail 1.03
really disturbing

  • Storing 'Sent' mail in 'On My Mac', but needing "To" not "From"..

Hi, I've looked for an answer to this in previous posts, but haven't yet found one:
I'm trying to store - so that they don't get erased - previously sent mail (..which is presently sitting in a 'Sent' mailbox under MAILBOXES..) so that it's sitting, instead, in a new box under the ON MY MAC heading.
The Sent mailbox in question is connected to an IMAP account ..so that the material is available on more than one computer. The IMAP account syncs correctly between Macs (..by their requesting and obtaining the latest material from the remote server).
Because the actual email account was set up incorrectly on the remote server (and now needs to be deleted and then reconfigured correctly) it's necessary to grab all the mail which is sitting in the local 'Sent' folder under MAILBOXES, and store this material offline in the local machines' ON MY MAC safe repository. (..The two Macs will then be "mechanically" sync'ed by simply copying the Mail folder within the User's Library from one Mac to the other ..this has always worked when used previously, if necessary..)
(..Mail's own Help file suggests Alt/Dragging the original folder to a new destination within ON MY MAC, but this doesn't seem to work for me..)
However: when all mail within the relevant 'Sent' folder is selected and then dragged to a newly-created folder within ON MY MAC (..which has worked OK for 'archiving' incoming email into an offline mailbox..) then the only headings within the new offline mailbox - consistent with offlining incoming mail - are 'From', 'Date Received', 'Subject', etc.
As this is supposed to be a copy of Sent instead of incoming mail, I'd like the headings to be - consistent with the original 'Sent' mailbox - "To", "Date Sent" and "Subject" instead.
Does anyone know of a means to change the headings within the newly-created folder to be "To" and "Date Sent" instead of 'From' and 'Date Received'?
    Thanks in anticipation..

Not to worry ..solved it myself:
For anyone who wants to know how to do this: Ctrl-click on the 'From' name, and then UNtick 'From' and tick (check) 'To' instead. Choose all your own headings by using Ctrl-click.
    Good night, and good luck!
P.S: Ah, sorry, Ernie; didn't see you there!
By 'MAILBOXES' I meant the heading(s) down the left column of Mail, which read MAILBOXES, ON MY MAC, RSS, etcetera.
Anyway, thanks for your concern, but I did manage to find the answer in the end: "..when in trouble, choose Ctrl-click for a contextual menu"!

  • Sent mail lost because of Quota

    Hi,
Is there a way to retrieve sent mail from a imap account that was not stored on the server becuase of a over quota.
Client is running 10.6.2 server is also running 10.6.2.

Never saw this, but check Mail>Preferences>Accounts>Mailbox behaviors & see if Sent: Erase messages is set to never.
Might try to make a Smart Mailbox that only includes From: = [email protected]

  • Help w/ IMAP (sent mail lost)

    Hi,
Since switching to IMAP several weeks ago, my Mail app has been very flaky. Some, but not all of my emails never arrive at their destination, and I get no errors either. Also, my 'sent' mail folder sometimes will show mail I've sent, and then it disappears.
From reading on this board, some people mention that the 'sent' mail folder on the server needs to have the same name as the one in Mail.
Well, how do I change that? Mail won't let me change the name of the main 'Sent' folder. Down below on the sidebar, there is another group of folders for each account that has IMAP. There is a 'Sent' folder there too, and I can change the name of it -- but I can't change it to the name that is actually on my server's web mail, which is 'Sent Mail'.
What is going on? Can someone explain to me how this works? I am sick of people never getting my mails and me not knowing it.
    Thanks
    Bob

I have no idea about the Mail not going as thats unlikely to be a Mail issue but more likely a hosting problem. try sending mail to yourself and also look at the Activity and Connection Doctor windows for clues.
As to the Sent Mail location, I don't know about the advice but my IMAP account has two folders - one called Sent and another called Sent Items. I have no idea what determines when it uses them but mail sent from the mail programme sometimes appears in one or the other.
If you can't find any mail, check you haven't got two similar folders.
Strangely, if I send mail, and check on my iPhone, it appears in yet another IMAP folder called sent which mysteriously empties itself into the other two every time the Mail program opens - until then it stays there on the iPhone.
    Go figure ...

  • Sent mail lost

I reverted to 10.6.1 after having problems upgrading to 10.6.2 with Adobe and Microsoft apps (slow/beach ball). I did it by restoring from the latest 10.6.1 Time Machine back up. Everything worked fine, except there were some sent emails in Mail that disappeared. All the pre-upgrade email (about 3 days worth) duplicates came in, but the Sent mailbox is empty and none of those came in. No recent sent mails are on the server's webmail. Is there any way to retrieve recent sent mail?

If Mail put the message in Sent, that means the outgoing (SMTP) server told Mail that the message would be delivered. If the message never reached its destination, it could be because the SMTP server didn’t fulfill its promise or because the message was filtered out by either the recipient’s incoming mail server or the recipient’s mail client for some (probably spam-related) reason.
There is no way to determine whether a message you sent was received other than asking the recipient.
Check that your System Preferences > Date & Time settings are correct. An invalid timestamp in the message headers could be the reason one of the servers involved is rejecting those messages.

  • Messages in "Sent Mail" were never actually sent.

We recently switched to Snow Leopard exchange, and switched from Microsoft Entourage to Mac Mail. Ever since the switch, I have realized that I am not getting any notifications if an email is not able to be sent.
I am normally able to send emails fine, but now and then, usually on emails with large attachments, the email never makes it to the recipient. These messages do not sit in my Outbox - they act as if they have been properly sent, and appear in my Sent Mail along with all the properly sent messages. When I was using Entourage and other email clients, I used to get a Delivery Status Notification that would let me know if a message was not able to be sent. At a minimum, it would be stuck in my Outbox so I at least knew it didn't get sent.
Is there any way for me to find out when a message was not successfully sent? This is a huge deal at my place of business, as we rely on email communication. I need to know if a message did not go through!

Hello, and welcome to the Discussions.
In order to protect against an overzealous SPAM filter somewhere in the path of the messages, you should resend one of these to someone you know did not receive. Open the message in the Sent mailbox, choose Message/Send Again from the menubar, then click on Format/Make Plain Text.
If you composed and sent in Rich Text Format, there is always a chance the RTF (which is a subset of HTML) will be deemed by a filter to be SPAM or worse, and stopped or removed. When a filter is so involved, you will not get any notice of delivery failure.

  • Sent mail. Some are there. Some are not. Some have content. Some do not.

    This is getting so frustrating.
I finally got Mail setup so that I am able to send and receive fine with all my accounts. So a little while ago I went to look for an email I sent to someone last month. There it is in my list of emails in my Sent folder, but when I select it, there is nothing in the message pane. Upon further investigation, all my Sent emails are empty from the point at which I re-set up my accounts after troubleshooting with a specialist at Apple.
So I thought I'd try rebuilding the Sent mailbox, since that seems to be one method of squaring things away. The good news is that now I am able to read the content of all emails in the Sent folder, even going back to 2006. The bad news is that while there were about 3000+ messages in there before the rebuild, there are now 306. I am missing a couple of weeks worth here, an couple of week's worth there, right up to the present. The big jump is from July 9 to Sept 3 of this year, then I'm missing Sept. 4 to Sept. 12.
Any idea how to solve this and recover my older emails? I did make a backup of my Mail folder before I screwed around with trying to "fix" things, but I don't want to risk messing things up even more by just dragging something in.

  • Error: Can't Save Message also Sent Mail Lost - IMAP

I'm having a problem with one of my IMAP accounts(several mailboxes from the same server) where when I am composing a message...about 2 minutes into writing the message an error pops up saying the message cannot be saved. I hit ok, send message then the sent message is not saved. I've been troubleshooting this problem. It only occurs in the Mac Mail.app with this particular server. The messages are saved when I send them from the server's webmail application and when I use Thunderbird. These are mailboxes associated with my website...so my buisness partner is having the same problem with his account and Mac Mail. Any and all help is greatly appreciated. I've searched this forum and tried several "solutions" including rebuilding the mailbox.
This is really annoying and making it difficult to do buisness.
    Thanks folks!

Fix Draft, Sent, Trash IMAP Folders In Apple Mail
This How-to describes how to configure Apple Mail to use appropriate folders on the IMAP server for storing Sent and Draft emails.
Apple Mail requires users to set up which folders on the IMAP server should be used for the "Sent", "Drafts", and "Trash" mailboxes.
If a user doesn't set these up they will be unable to see their sent or deleted messages and will get an error message when saving drafts of emails.
To manually assign which folders on the server will be assigned to the Sent, Trash, and Drafts folders, follow these steps for each mailbox name:
    1. Click on the IMAP folder in the mailbox drawer
    2. Select the menu item "Mailbox-->Use This Mailbox For-->(choose the mailbox name)".

  • HT1694 Exchange sent mail going to hotmail sent folder

Why are my messages sent with my exchange exchange account going to my hotmail sent folder? This is happening on my iPad and my iPhone.

Hmmmm...... perhaps if you took the time to read instructions.
Did you save the add-on XPI file and install it in Thunderbird like the instructions said. Or try and install it in Firefox, get the inevitable failure and complain here that it is not compatible. The web site offers instructions. Perhaps if you read these. http://chrisramsden.vfast.co.uk/3_How_to_install_Add-ons_in_Thunderbird.html That add-on works with the current version.
"You don't recall any read only" Right click any file you copied off the DVD. Select properties and there you have a read only flag.
Do you have anti virus software running? Disable any part of it involving SPAM, TRASH Phishing and email.

  • How to determine the difference between a user sent mail and an auto-sent mail by another program?

    Hi,
I am currently capturing the item_send event in an Outlook (2010/13) addin which then processes the email before it sends.  Will this event fire for an email that is generated and sent automatically, i.e. without the user clicking the send button?  For
example there may be another addin installed that emails hourly logs somewhere, or gives the user an option click another button to send a generated email to their support team.
Ideally, I would like my addin code in the item_send event to only run when the user has purposely sent the email themselves from a draft email by clicking the send button.
    Thanks in advance,
    Tom

  • Sent Mail not found in sent file

This started a few weeks ago.   Sometimes when I send a new message,  it does not show up in my sent file, leaving me wondering if it was sent at all,  and preventing me from reviewing the email too.
I looked in preferences for MAIL  and I do not see a way this could be a  choice that I somehow allowed.  I do have most of my sent file emails,  just occasionally don't have all of them.   One did go through,  the recipient answered back.
I have the Snow Leopard limited version of iCloud and use the MAIL  on iMac most of the time.  The disappearing sent emails are the same in both locations.
Can anyone help me with this?
    Thanks

    Hi Ric,
I have the exact same problem - I do also have two "sent" folders.
It's like this: when I send from my web-mail the sent mails is in "sent folder 1" - when I send from the application Mail the sent mails ends up in "Sent folder 2"

  • Sent mail is not being received

Some of my emails use my me.com account are not being received by the recipient.
The emails show being SENT in my SENT box.

I have a similar but perhaps unrelated problem. Every now and then, I send an email on my gmail account using Mail. The sent mail appears in my sent box, but never arrives, and does not appear in my webmail sent box (where it usually does, using gmail). Most of the time it works, and it even works most of the time with people it has had a problem with, including mail I send to myself at work at my professional address. Usually arrives...but not always. I don't know how to trust my sent mail box without always going on the webmail to make sure it actually went out. I only have this problem when using the Mail application, but there are no other common characteristics (attachements, ISPs, etc) to say there could be a problem with one of those things. Anyone else have this problem?

  • "save sent  mail on server" does not work

    Hello,
When I send a Mail by MAIL via my IMAP account MAIL failed to save the sent mail on the server. However I can see the folder where usually sent mails are stored I have send by web mail. In the preferences I positively checked the "save mail on server" box and chose to store sent mails forever
I also cannot save email drafts. I get always an error message that the mail cannot be saved.
I have a similar issue that deleted mails are not moved to the "trash" folder of my mail account.
    Thanks & Regards, Joe

That command is mentioned in the “Renaming, moving, or deleting a mailbox” article, for example, but you wouldn’t find it searching for a solution to your problem in Mail Help amongst other reasons because it’s not a solution, it’s a workaround. Doing that shouldn’t be necessary for Mail to be able to store messages on the server, only for telling it to use a mailbox different from the one it would use by default.
Mail should be able to create any necessary mailboxes on the server or realize that they’re already there. If it doesn’t, it’s because there is something amiss, the problem usually being that the server uses a NAMESPACE feature that Mail doesn’t handle properly and that causes server-stored mailboxes to appear as subfolders of the account’s Inbox, even though they really aren’t — see “Can't create folders, only subfolders of INBOX” in the Courier FAQ, for example. Those IMAP accounts require INBOX to be put in Preferences > Accounts > Advanced > IMAP Path Prefix for Mail to handle them properly.

  • ICloud not showing sent mail from my iMac

Hi all, if I go to iCloud mail and send an email the recipient receives it. However it doesn't show up in my iCloud sent mail. There is sent mail present but that looks to be just emails sent from my BB or iPad. While researching this issue I found this : https://discussions.apple.com/thread/3390316 So I went to Mail and yes that "store sent mail on server" was not checked. I then checked it as implied in the above link, but the sent emails still do not show up. Could anyone advise please? TIA, Terry.

I am currently running Mail.app on ML.
My Mail.app and iCloud webmail settings were already congruent with those recommended regarding saving a copy of the Sent emails [Store sent mail upon the iCloud server].
Despite this being the case, I have found that Sent messages were not been getting saved reliably in Mail.app or upon the iCloud webmail interface.
Some did get saved though - rather odd.
I don't want to call my reported email problem as fixed but it seems hardly coincidental to me that once I had chosen to unflag Store deleted messages [Trash section] upon the iCloud mail server that such messages as were sent form my two iCloud addresses messages began to be saved reliably.
Surely this is indicative of some underlying misconfiguration with the iCloud server itself as Trash messages clearly aren't Sent messages and yet messages only began to be reliably saved once I had chosen to unflag Store deleted messages. As previously stated, I already had my mailbox behaviours set to Store Sent messages upon the iCloud server, but this proved to be of no avail until I chose to unflag Store deleted messages.
See attached picture for Mailbox Behaviours.

  • Why is sent mail not being shown in sent box?

I even question whether sent mail is really being sent. It tells me it is but without verification I don't know,

Your intuition is correct. When sending a message via your iPhone, the MBP automatically sends duplicate messages to your desktop. And you're right: it's annoying to have to trash messages you already sent - but at least you know your system is working.
There's a neat fix for this. On your ISP's mail application, add a mail box devoted only to your iPhone messages (e.g., [email protected]). Most ISPs will let your add email accounts this way. Add and configure the new email to sync with your iPhone. The next time you use your iPhone with this account, you won't get any duplicate messages, since your iMac hasn't been configured to accept messages from [email protected].
Problem solved? If so, post here so others can use this information. If not, do you need more information?
