Sent mail occasionally vanishes (but is sent)

I’m getting an intermittant (ie: hard to pin down) problem on both of my IMAP accounts, Sometimes, when I send an email, the message is sent (I get the whoosh noise, and the recipient does receive it) but my copy disappears without a trace. Not stored locally, and not stored on the server (I’ve checked via webmail). As somebody who keeps every email either sent or received that is part of a client conversation, this is a problem, as I now have gaps in my permanent record.
Just to cover the basic questions:
Yes, I have the account preferences set to store messages on the server, and never to delete them;
I am unable to determine any particular trigger for this problem;
I have a broadband connection functioning at a reasonable speed;
Mail 4.5, OS X 10.6.8;
The problem occurred under Leopard, too;
Other threads on these discussion forums reference the same problem; often the  discussions start to focus on the problem being linked to whatever specific ISP the original poster is using, but with almost everybody who posts this problem having a different ISP/mail host, I am of the opinion that this is simply a Mail bug, independant of specific ISPs or mail servers. Also, none of the threads have come up with a satisfactory solution AFAIK.
If anyone has anything they can suggest to correct this issue then please chime in, because it's becoming an increasingly problematic phenomenon, and seems to be getting more frequent.
Thanks;
Rick

Months further down the line and this glitch/bug is still happening with no
discernible pattern or trigger and I'm no nearer finding out how to prevent it -- or even if that is possible. For the record, I get the same error message appearing in Console as Marco does:
Error (null) occurred while trying to append messages to outgoing store. Ignoring and proceeding with delivery...
...and goggling the problem shows that we are not alone... but nobody has come up with a remedy. From what I've been reading, this problem seems to have cropped up in Leopard and continued into Snow Leopard (I can't vouch for Lion; I'm not using that yet).
For anybody who uses email as a comprehensive permanent record of business communication this bug is critical. And if it is a bug in Mail (I say ‘if’ because it could be a conflict with a particular flavour of mail server or something) then it does rather send out the message that “this is fine for casual consumer use, but if you need your email to work in a reliable, professional context then look elsewhere, because Mail ain’t really for you”.
Which is a shame, because other than that (and a few other feature-set deficiencies) it's a good email app.

  • Can no longer send emails from Mail on iMac but CAN on MBP

    Initially, when Mobile Me ended, my email was changed to work with iCloud and it worked fine for about seven months or so.  Then, it started giving me an error message (on my iMac, my Macbook Pro, and my iPhone) that said it rejected my password. After a long phone call with Apple, they said that the iCloud server was having problems with certain accounts.  They seemed to have fixed it and the mail started working again.
    Then it stopped sending email BUT ONLY on my iMac (message says that stmp rejects my password).  I have the exact same settings (and password) on my Macbook Pro and the iCloud/Mac/Me mail is received and sent without trouble.  I have Snow Leopard on both computers and the same version of Mail on both computers. My Thunderbird email client receives and sends my iCloud/Mac/Me email on my iMac without a problem.  Apple Mail receives and sends my other email addresses (gmail, hover) without a problem.  Gmail is set to POP and Hover is set to IMAP.
    What I have tried:
    1) I have deleted the iCloud mail account and re-created it using instructions from Apple Support online as well as Mac users on the forums.  (I am not an IT expert, but I can follow instructions.)
    2) I have removed all saved iCloud/Mobile Me passwords from my keychain (both incoming and outgoing) in case there was an old one stored there.
    3) I have created a new IMAP account.  I have created a new Mobile Me IMAP account. I am not given the option in Snow Leopard of creating a new iCloud account -- but as I said the iCloud account (called Mobile Me IMAP) is WORKING on my Macbook Pro.
    If I were having the problem with the Macbook Pro rather than the iMac, I'd just go to the Genius Bar and let them handle it.  But, if I can do it without packing up and carrying my desktop, that would be preferable.
    Any suggestions?

    Hi Lanny,
    Thank you for this.  I followed it "to the letter".  In fact, I tried it twice to make sure I didn't miss any steps. Both times, everything went as described until STMP.  When I got to the STMP page and hit "create", it once again told me that the STMP server name and/or password were "incorrect".  My iCloud mail arrives fine, but nothing can go out because the outgoing mail does not recognize my password (or at least that seems to be what is happening.) I tried to give up and set Thunderbird up as my default mail client, but iPhoto doesn't recognize it and when I want to email a photo, it opens Apple Mail. I just do not understand why it works on my MBP and not on my iMac. Nothing was changed on either computer.  It simply stopped sending outgoing mail on the iMac and continues to send out on the MBP.
    It's a mystery.

  • Can send or receive e-mail on exchange e-mail in 3g, but not wireless

    Hello,
    At work, i have an exchange e-mail which is using "Active Sync" so that I can connect my e-mail, contacts, calendar, etc on my iphone.  I have the settings set to push and fetch my data automatically (i know it uses more of the battery too).
    Everything was working for the past 3 months until just a few days ago where I cannot send or receive my e-mail unless i come off of the wifi settings.  3g works, but not wifi...when I am on wifi, I can get the internet on my phone just fine, just not my exchange e-mail (cannot send either).  It takes like up to 20 minutes to receive an e-mail on wireless, but on 3g it is almost instant.
    HELP?
    thank you very much

    Am in Olympia WA for the holiday - I live in San Diego - I agree started two days ago. I spent 3 hours with Apple Support - they conferenced in ATT and they were no help. Eventually - I did a restore and did not change a thing. Am using 1.1.2.
    Something happened late monday as it was fine sat - mon night. Since I do not live in WA - I assume things will be OK when I return to CA. Giving ATT a call might help - but you will definately need to get it escalated to a higher level.
    I have sent this forum link to the great apple T3 support person that spent so much time with me - hopefully he will forward on to ATT and it will get resolved for all of you. Something did change on Monday night.

  • Attachment icon visible in Mail 5.1 but attachment is not visible

    Running a couple of iMac's with OSX Lion and Mail 5.1.
    Quite often we have problems receiving mails with attachments.
    Lately in the list of received emails you do see the attachment icon (paper clip) yet in the message itself there is no attachment visible. Although there should be one. We have checked that the email was indeed sent with attachment and others (not with the same set-up/Mac) do receive these attachments.
    Have found several threads about attachment issues but with earlier OSX and Mail versions.
    The amount of knowledge here is too big ;-)
    Any help is more than welcome.

    Exactly the same problem here. Yesterday installed Lion, since then some attachments show for example in google mail web interface but not in mail (exactly as you describe above). Also Outlook 2010 receipents (windows) don't see the attachments that I send anymore....
    I just switched to Microsoft Entourage. Sad story, had been using mail for a long time it it worked pretty well, but there is no way I can live with these issues. If anybody comes up with a solution please let me know.

  • Upgraded to Tiger; Mail can Send, but not receive... help!

    Hi there,
    I've come across lots of issues people have had importing all their mailboxes when they've upgraded from Panther to Tiger, but my wife's problem is different - - Mail can Send, but not receive. 'Get Mail' hasn't worked since the upgrade. I've been on the phone with my POP server provider, and all my Mail Account settings are correct. I can send mail, as I say, and sure enough, there it is in her Hotmail web page, along with all the other messages people have sent her in the last two weeks...
    So why can't Mail 'get' these messages, if all the settings are correct?
    Any advice would be appreciated.
    Malcolm

    You’re welcome.
    If you deleted a POP account, then all the messages stored in that account’s mailboxes has certainly been wiped out, not just moved somewhere, and you were warned that this would happen by the following alert:
    Remove Account
    Are you sure you want to remove the <AccountType> account "<AccountName>"?
    This will permanently delete the account setup information, mailboxes, and messages from your computer. Messages stored on the mail server will not be affected.
    To prevent that from happening, you should have moved those messages to custom “On My Mac” mailboxes instead of leaving them in the account’s mailboxes. Actually, using Inbox and Sent for archiving purposes is a bad idea regardless.
    If the messages are not on the server and you don’t have a backup (which you should have made before doing something like that), you may try to salvage as many deleted *.emlx files as possible with a data recovery tool such as Data Rescue II, TechTool Pro, or FileSalvage (the files to be recovered would be different in the case of Mail 1.x). Of these, the only one I know for sure that can currently recover deleted *.emlx files is FileSalvage. Stop using your computer right now if you want to try that, as anything you do with the computer may cause the deleted files to be overwritten.

  • Help, mail does receive but not send

    can anybody help me, my mail does receive  but does not sent any acount exept iCloud acounts.
    it does not connect to servidor SMTP

    This is a reasonalby common occurance, Apple addresses it in:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1307
    If that does not help then it is possible a setting has been corrupted. In that case go to Mail-Settings-Accounts and re-input all the settings even though they may look OK.

  • Duplicate E-mails and Vanished E-mails

    Earlier this week I added a new POP e-mail address to my account - and a couple of things have happened. First I lost all the downloaded e-mails in one existing mailbox - they came up in the list but when I clicked on them - a note came up saying I needed to take the account online - it was online. All new e-mails come in - but the old ones vanished. I then pressed the "refresh" button thinking it might bring them back - but after that even the headings vanished.
    Secondly - now a new event has occured as of this morning - I am receiving two copies of every e-mail addressed to one of my three mailboxes. I have checked my preferences and do not have the same incoming address for any of them.
    My provider is Earthlink. Any suggestioins?

    What does “I added a new POP e-mail address to my account” mean? Is that the only thing you did? Could it be that you created a new mail account, then deleted it, for example?
    I then pressed the "refresh" button
    What do you mean? There is no such thing as a “refresh” button in Mail...
    I have checked my preferences and do not have the same incoming
    address for any of them.
    Not sure what you mean here either. What identifies a mail account are the User Name and the Incoming Mail Server, not the Email Address. If the username and the incoming mail server are the same, then both accounts are the same, no matter what the email address is...

  • Mail occasionally displays zero messages

    Mail occasionally displays 0 messages. This happens intermittently and I'm not able to associate it with any particular behavior.
    When this occurs mail will displays no messages in the message viewer window, for any mailbox, even though each mailbox has many messages, and it shows an explicit message in the header bar area that there are zero messages in particular mailboxes that are not empty. This can happen when there is new mail, mail indicates that there is new mail but it doesn't display messages in the pane.
    When this happens mail will not respond to quit, but activity monitor doesn't show mail as unresponsive. After a forced quit mail seems to function normally, but this is worrying.
    Is this a known problem?
    thanks,
    J
    J

    Hi John, and a warm welcome to the forums!
    I presume this is an IMAP account?
    Anyway, try these..
    Quit Mail.
    In your Home folder. open Library folder, open Mail folder in that, look for the Envelope Index, and drag it to the Desktop.
    Then in your Home folder. open Library folder, open Caches folder in that, look for the Mail, and drag it to the Desktop.Move Envelope Index to the Desktop in...
    /Users/YourUserName/Library/Mail/Envelope Index
    Move this folder to the Desktop...
    /Users/YourUserName/Library/Caches/Mail

  • My mail has vanished

    All my stored emails have disappeared. I can only see a few recent ones, but older than a month have all gone. Why? How to recover them?

    My mail has vanished as well. The first time a few months ago and the second time was yesterday, but only from my Inbox. In my case recent mail was totally deleted and more older mail allowed to remain, but 100's of emails disappeared.
    Here is a suggestion from the OS X 10.4 manual: *In some cases, you might need to rebuild a mailbox to update the list of messages in the mailbox. For example, if email messages appear to be missing or garbled, or if you can't find all relevant messages by searching.*
    *To rebuild a selected mailbox, choose Mailbox > Rebuild.*
    *For IMAP accounts, locally cached messages and attachments are discarded and the messages and attachments are downloaded again from the server to your hard disk. Your mailbox appears empty until the download is complete. This action is recommended for fast Internet connections only.*
    However, my email mostly disappeared from Apple's server, so seems to be lost forever. If you have a .Mac account you can go online to view your mailbox in the sky. Mine reflected the substantial loses...

  • Want to delete mails from Thunderbird but not from the server?

    Hi,
    Please tell me how to configure the settings of Thunderbird so that if i delete any mail from Thunderbird that mail would be delete only from Thunderbird not from server. I'm using IMAP configuration for all my mail accounts and I'm using Thunderbird in my laptop and tablet both.
    Currently i'm using Thunderbird 24.4.0 and i just want to delete my useless mails from Thunderbird but not from the server without using pop-3 settings.
    Actually the reason for this Question arises because whenever i use to uninstall and reinstatement Thunderbird, i use to take "profiles" as a back up and its size is increasing day by day that is making a big issue to me as i cant take a back up of such a big size file.

    Imap mail accounts keep the emails on the server and you see a remote view of those emails and folders.
    When you subscribe to see a folder, the headers are downloaded, when you select an email to read, the entire folder is downloaded to a temp cache facilitating quicker access. If you synchronize folders, then a copy of that folder is downloaded to an mbox file in your profile, so that you have a copy of the server folder. When you make any changes to a synchronized folder, read an email, delete or move etc, then Thunderbird will resynchronize with the server to update the server. A synchronized folder allows you to work in 'offline' mode and this is the best time to perform a backup as you know there is a temporary stop on synchronizing as you are offline. They will resynchronize when you go back into 'online' mode.
    So, with IMAP mail accounts, the folders you see in Thunderbird are the same folders on the webmail server. If you make any changes via Thunderbird or webmail then you are changing the same folder. You cannot delete an email without deleting it from the server, they are one and the same.
    What you can do is move/copy an email into Local Folders and delete the one on the server. The Local Folders emails are kept in your Profile on your computer, these folders/emails are not on the server, unless you chose to keep a copy of them on the server.
    Pop mail accounts cannot see the folders on the server. They only access the server Inbox folder and download emails not previously downloaded to the mail account Inbox in Thunderbird. These emails are kept on your computer in your profile folder. You can select to keep a copy on the server or not. You can choose to delete emails off your computer and off the server or not.
    If the mail account is gmail , have you subscribed or even synchronized to see the 'All Mail' folder ? Gmail's all Mail folder is their Archive folder, it keeps a copy of all of your non-deleted emails. So, you do not need to subscribe to see this folder as it only shows you what you can already see in other folders. It doubles the disc space.
    Please read section on 'All Mail' at this link.
    * http://kb.mozillazine.org/Using_Gmail_with_Thunderbird_and_Mozilla_Suite
    You do not have to download/synchronize the entire folder. You could select to only synchronize the most recent xx days of emails.

  • Mail receives OK but will not send for smtp account.  Exchange server receives/sends OK

    mail receives OK but will not send for smtp account.  Exchange server receives/sends OK  I'm away from home, using a family-member's wireless network that has always worked OK in the past.  Today, the same problem occured while waiting in a hospital waiting lounge.  Any ideas?

    The outgoing mail server may be rejecting mail from your network address. Typically that happens when your mail service provider is also your ISP, and you connect to it from another network. The SMTP server will allow connections without a password from anywhere, but it will only relay mail from within the ISP's network. It could also be that your account on the server has expired or been suspended.
    If you need to send mail from outside your ISP's network, use an independent mail service provider. I don't have a specific recommendation.
