Serial-ATA / PCI card / G4 agp 450hz

I've just bought the seagate barracuda 120g internal hard drive (model no. ST3120026AS) for my power mac G4 AGP 450 MHz.
I already have 2 hard drives connected
I can't see anywhere to connect my new hard drive, and the connector points are different to those of my current drives. [I've done some research and it seems that my old hard drives are IDE]
Do I need to buy a PCI card?? If so, what is a good one to buy?
Or do I need something different???
I would really appreciate help on this matter... I only have approx. 1GB of space left on my current hard drives and can't properly use my mac
Thank you much
Matty

To use a Serial-ATA drive, you will need a Mac-compatible PCI card.
There are some here.

  • Serial ATA Controller Card for bigger hard drives on 8600/300

    Hi again,
Can a Serial ATA Controller Card work on the PowerMac 8600/300 as well as on the G4 tower?
How can I tell if the PCI slots are the same?
    Thanks
    web dude

According to the specs listed for Sonnet's Tempo Serial ATA controller card, it's compatible with the early PCI Macs - like the 8600, as well as newer G3s, G4s, etc. The FirmTek SeriTek 1S2 SATA controller card has gotten favorable feedback in the Forums. The 8600's PCI slots are probably PCI 2.0-compliant, whereas the G4 AGPs probably have PCI 2.1-compliant slots. Even though the FirmTek card specifies PCI 2.2-compliant slots, it's undoubtedly backward-compatible. If you just want to use larger IDE/EIDE drives in your 8600, the (now-discontinued) Acard Ultra ATA-66 PCI controller card is an inexpensive solution at $25. Unlike the Acard Ultra ATA-133 controller card, it has the 128 GB limit, so a 120 GB drive is the optimal choice for it. Newegg has a Seagate 120 GB ATA-100 (8 MB Cache) hard drive for $55. I've got (3) 8600/300s and they were one of Apple's better-designed towers, especially with the large cooling fan in the side panel. I installed a G3/266 MHz processor in one, along with a pair of 4 GB hard drives, an ATI Rage 128 graphics card, and FireWire and USB PCI cards. It runs so well and quietly, that I'm reluctant to part with it - in spite of the fact that I rarely use it anymore. With the hard drive mounting plate on the bottom of the chassis floor, it can accommodate more hard drives than the shortened version of the same mini-tower case, used for the beige G3s.

  • ATA PCI card with 48 bit BIOS support?

    Hello,
I have an iMac G3 CRT purchased at the very end of 2001 (last of this model.) I am about to install a new hard drive. I am replacing an 80GB with a 160GB Maxtor (because they were the same price!) The drive box says that drives larger than 137GB require a Mac-compatible ATA PCI card with 48 bit BIOS support. Do I already have this? Is this part of the mother board? If not I will exchange the drive for a smaller one.
    Thanks.
iMac G3 CRT Mac OS 9.2.x

I forgot to mention something. Firewire cases can allow you to make use of a larger drive though. So you could keep your internal and put the new drive in a firewire case that supports large drives and get lots of extra space.

  • K7n2 with a serial ata addin card

I have a k7n2 without the serial ata controller, athlon 2400, 512 mb ddr 333, and a winfast geforce 2 mx 64.  my question is will i be able to boot off of an addin serial ata card and a western digital raptor 36 gig hard drive.  also will the bios be able to recognize this as the primary drive and windows xp show it as the c: drive.  i will also be connecting a cd-rom drive to the built on ide controller.  there are no other cards in any of the pci slots on the mb.  i am not sure what brand of ata controller card i will be purchasing so any advise on this is also appreciated.
    Thanks Richard

you will also have to hit f6 as xp install starts and feed in the drivers on a floppy that come with the card
slot 3 should be good for it as well

  • I have a MDD dual 1.25ghz processors and I would like to know which sata drives will work with the Sonnet Seria ATA pci card?

Which sata drives will work with the Sonnet Tempo Serial ATA card?

Pretty much any of the SATA 3.0 Gbps drives.
Western Digital Black and Blue and Hitachi 7K drives are all good choices.
If you try a SATA 6.0 Gbps drive, it will need to be jumped to limit to SATA 3.0 Gbps.

  • Installing a Serial DB25 PCI Card

Is there a PCI card that is compatible with the Mac Pro that sports a DB25 Serial card? (The connection used on old printers before USB) I need it to be a card, not the USB-to-DB25 solutions, for running CNC machines. I'd only use it while booting Windows with Parallels.
    Anyone have a clue?

you can put the card in & use it in windows...
the only thing you might run into is if OS X may not boot if it's installed... but this is usually only the case with unsupported video & SATA cards.
if it's only used in windows & the machine will boot properly to OS X, all should be well.

  • KT6 Delta-FIS2R Serial ATA Question

I have 2 maxtor 80gb serial ATA drives on order, should be here anyday now.  Can't wait!!
Now with the KT6 Delta-FIS2R am i right in thinking it has 2 serial ata controller cards (via & promise?) each supporting 2 drives.
Which controller do you recommend i plug my drives into?  I intend making a 160gb JBOD stripe set with the 2 disks.  Is there much difference between the two?
With the via it appears you can make/delete the raid config thru the bios.  Do you have to ctrl-? to get into the promise to do the same?
Apologies for my lack of understanding but i haven't really played with the MB much as i'm waiting for the drives to arrive.
Also, what is the recommended stripe size?  the book says 64k, is this correct in practice?  I will be making a 20gb system partition and the remaing 140gb for data and the pc will just be for general use (downloaded files, re-encoding dvds, maybe the odd game)
    bios updates?
What is the recommended patch levels for the motherboard and both serial-ata controllers?
    Many thanks for your time.
    Zarch

Yup, seen the perf. figures... System does seem really fast, but when you're coming from a PIII with 5400rpm and 512k cache, anything is fast   Got to remember benchmarks are just that and real performance lies somewhere between 0 and benchmarks...
For setup, I think I've seen mention that you should build the SATA array as the only HDD in the system as a first off otherwise the OS tries to install to the IDE drive. Haven't tried this, but just to let you know.
Also, you have to create the RAID array in the BIOS and also set the array to be a boot device in the BIOS. Without doing this the OS doesn't appear to install correctly (and you certainly won't be able to boot it!!).
I don't think there is any performance degredation to splitting the disk into two except if one of the partitions becomes full. When it gets full, it is much more difficult to defrag the drive (and seek time is what ruins disk performance). I've found that you need 20-30% free to be able to sensibly defrag drives (with large files on there). If you believe you'll only ever use 12-15GB for your system, then fire away - but bear in mind I've used that in the first 4 weeks with my system (without the video files...). Games can be a few hundreds of MB each so they soon mount up if you are not careful...
Just have fun and enjoy a really fast system and dont forget a separate backup HDD (or get another 2 SATA drives and run a RAID 0+1 off the Promise controller...) - and not one of the partitions!!

  • USING A PCI CARD TO RUN A 320GIG ATA/IDE HD IN A QUICKSILVER G4

I didn't realise that my model did not support HD's over 120gb. After much reading I found out that I would need a PCI ata 133 card. On checking on ebay it was confusing as to which one. What do I specifically need? There is a range in prices also for similar units. I would rather pay more for quality? Are all PCI cards compatible for macs and PCs?

Hello! No not all cards will work in Macs and many are not bootable. Sonnet's pci cards are bootable and many like OWC's cards. Personally I like Sonnet's SATA card since many new drives are the newer technology. You could put the drive in an external firewire enclosure that would also be bootable. HERE's the Sonnet ide/ata133 card which will do what you want and HERE's a good enclosure should you decide to go that route. tom

  • ACARD AEC-6860M PCI RAID ATA 66 card not showing connected hard drives

I just installed an ACARD AEC-6860M PCI card in my G4 (Quicksilver 2002) and am having some difficulty getting Disk Utility to recognize the drives. I know other people in these forums have used this particular card before (Related thread: http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=5688908), so I'm hoping you can help me.
The AEC-6860M is a PCI RAID card for 2 ATA drives. I've installed the drivers for the card and verified that it appears in System Profiler. However, no combination of drives or cables makes the 2 drives I have connected to it visible in System Profiler (under SCSI or ATA) or in Disk Utility, so I can't format them and actually use them.
Can anyone share any secrets? Thanks!
    (See card details at http://store.mcetech.com/Merchant2/merchant.mvc?Screen=PROD&ProductCode=ACA-AEC-6860M&Category_Code=CLRNCINTCARDS&ProductCount=1)

    Hello birdy.....,
Sorry to take so long responding. Major disaster! My whole wall bookcase just tumbled, and I'm still working at excavating the family (of Macs).
Your card should work. I've used the Acard cards by the dozens without problem, though I've never used that particular 6860 card or set up a RAID ARRAY. Just checked, using a 6880 (RAID) though as a controller card and not as a RAID ARRAY, and found that my 2002 QS Mac would not see a standard hard drive(#2) running OSX (10.2) that had been formatted by the OSX install disk using the stock bus on the motherboard. It would, however, see a hard drive(#3) that had been formatted while connected to an ACARD controller card (6280). I'm guessing that an OSX installer disk is prepared to see and to deal with a SCSI drive, and that Disk Utility is not.
    Check that.
Just removed the controller card formatted drive(#3) and re-installed the OSX(10.2) drive(#2); this time my 2002 QS saw it right away, both on the desktop and in disk utility. I guess it needed personal messenger service.
As I recall, I've seen that happen before using controller cards; as a result, I've always taken care to format a new hard drive by connecting it to a controller card if that is the way I intend to use it. Hard drives can be capricious, sometimes. At any rate, try formatting your hard drive(s) with an OSX installer disk (hoping you have one) while connected to the ACARD controller card - just click on erase (twice) and the drive formats automatically.
I'm a little mystified by reference to drivers; never installed any drivers, and always assumed none were needed.
Hope that helps. Check back and let me know.
    Jon

  • Help requested with 645 Ultra-C with a PCI ATA/133 card fitted

I'm new here, so please bear with me if this plea for help is short of info :-
I built my PC 5 years ago, using a 645 Ultra-C board ( MS-6547 2.00 ) and have had no problems since - till now.
I recently installed a PCI ATA/133 card, mainly to be able to add 2 additional hard drives.  It installed ok and the 2 extra drives are recognised correctly on the card's primary channel as is a DVD device on the secondary channel.
However, on initial booting, the card is interrogated to determine what devices are connected to it and then there is a delay of up to 2 minutes ( it feels like forever ) while BootMagic is being searched for/loaded.
It makes no difference if I swap the 2 drives and the dvd over or remove the dvd drive.
The bios ( AMI 07.00T 12/20/01 )  is correctly setup to boot from floppy first, then HDD1 ( connected to the mainboard's primary channel) and 'try other boot devices' is disabled.
I have no wish to boot from the extra drives, so is there any way of avoiding the boot system from looking there first ?   Is there any other bios settings to consider ?
I'd be grateful for any hints/help.
    Thanks.

    Yes,
Go into bios and set boot sequence
Also go into pci controller bios, and set no boot
It's usually CRTL+A or CRTL+M keys on keyboard............
Controller cards will be main boot target, unless told
I have got the boot sequence set correctly - but I can see no sign of a pci controller bios option.  Cntrl A  or Cntrl M  have no effect.  Maybe the 645 bios doesnt offer those options.
I have never updated the bios - being of the 'if it aint broke dont change it' school of thought, so I may need to look at this area, now.
I'll be posting a question here about live update very soon - basically 'is it the best way to update the bios ?'
Thanks for your help so far

  • PCI ATA expansion cards for PM G4

    Hi Folks.
So i bought a PCI ATA expansion card for my G4, but the bloody thing won't work. Despite having a Mac logo on the box, the drivers for the card are only compatable with Windows...
My question is, are there any PCI ATA cards around these days that are Mac compatible and dont cost an-arm-and-a-leg?

    What brand/model is it?
    Here's an alternate card http://eshop.macsales.com/item/Sonnet%20Technology/THDMW/

  • What to do about not waking after Sonnet Tango USB FW PCI in G4 AGP Graph?

I have bought a used PowerMac G4 AGP Graphics 400 MHz, running OS X 10.3.9, 512 Megs of RAM, 20 GB internal ATA HD, Internal CDRW, Internal ZIP 100, Adaptec SCSI SE card (25 pole).
That system was just fine - amazing power for an 8 year old computer!!!
Then I installed a Sonnet Tango USB 2.0 FW 400 PCI card that I removed from my PowerMac 7600 - Sonnet G3 running OS 9.1 where it worked flawlessly.
I wanted to get USB 2.0 in the G4. The card works great - burning a DVD with a LG Burner attached via USB was amazing - DVD done in 5 min!
However one Problem: I cannot let the system go to sleep any more. Once it is to sleep I cannot wake it any more. I have to force reboot. When I choose sleep from the menu, the first time the computer wakes immediately after going to sleep, when I try once more, I get a message that I have to force reboot the machine by pressing the power key for 5 seconds.
Does anybody have a solution (to this apparently relatively common problem).
I have included a passage from my system log.

    Hi KBReid,
Your issue looks really familiar. I have a G5 iMac (all stock except 2G RAM upgrade) that has been running 10.5.6 for, well, as long as it's been out. The machine is set to automatically shutdown at 10PM and boot up at 8AM. It's on a UPS. 4 nights ago it shut down, and in the morning it was stuck at a light blue screen with the pinwheel in the top left corner after it tried to boot up. I've unplugged it, reset PRAM, went into OF and typed reset-all. Here's the kicker: I can boot from the 10.4 disc that came with the iMac and see the drive, verify/repair (nothing was wrong). It won't repair permissions because it looks for some "package." The iMac won't boot from the 10.5 disc (full retail). Or perhaps I should say that it won't completely boot, because it does the same thing that the hard drive does: it goes through the apple screen, then two shades of grey and two shades of blue really slowly, then it stops with the pointer at the top left (leaving a copy of it lurking in the top left corner if I move it.) Eventually the pointer becomes the spinning wheel, and then it's all over.
I don't think that it did any update (I have it set to ask first, and the boot partition chooser in 10.4 disc still show 10.5.6 as the HD OS) so I'm totally baffled why it is acting the way it does.
Any suggestions? Did you resolve your issue?
    Thanks!

  • Which pci card to choose

i am wanting to buy a pci graphics card for my p3 system, as it has no agp, i already have gf2mx200 pci card, but i want something that will run new games the best chipset ive come across for pci slot is either FX5200 or the ati radeon 9200, i think the radeon is inferior to the fx5200(correct me if  i am wrong any link to a comparison b/w the both will help) so i have made a choice of buying a fx5200 based card, my question is that does msi build any pci cards on the 5200fx chipset because in my country there r only official distributors of msi or asus, and thats the only way i can order those cards.pls tell me the exact models of the msi cards built on fx5200 chipset, plus correct me if im wrong, the 9200 and the fx5200 r the only chipsets with a pci version out there, or as i have heard a gf4 mx is also an option.btw in order of capability or performance how would u put the 3 mentioned chipsets in order.

I own a FX 5200 AGP but I have a more powerful system, so I would recommend you the ATi Radeon 9xxx because it has better performance. The DX9 features of the FX will be useless for a pc of that calibre (Radeon 9200 doesn`t have DX9 support, also)
Good Luck in the buy of your new card!!!

  • Fade-off with MSI T-128 (nVidia geForce FX 5200) PCI card

    Hi
I'm totally fade-off with nVidia GeForce FX 5200 (MSI -T128) graphics PCI card. I've tried all options found on different forums and also with latest driver for the card both from MSI and nVidia. But non of these are able to solve my problem.
Even though, I have installed the latest driver for the card form nVidia or MSI, my system gives BSOD (infinite loop) on XP and system hang on Ubuntu/Linux. Request you to please help me out for this problem. Its dam sure something wrong in the card driver or BIOS settings as its occurring with any OS.
This is my last ray of hope, with a expection that some MSI people will help me out, else I'll have to throw the f**king card to bin. Sorry being unprofessional, but it seems that I have wasted my money banking on the brand MSI/nVidia.
    PC Configuration:
    1. Asus K8N motherboard (nVidia chipset, NO on-board graphics)
    2. MSI T-128 (nVidia GeForce FX 5200) PCI graphics card
    3. Windows XP SP3/ Ubuntu 9.04
    4. 512 MB DDR1 RAM
    5. 320GB, 7200 rpm Seagate ATA HDD
    6. AMD Athlon XP 2800+
Again request the nVidia people plz plz plz .. help me.
Note that, When I'm booting with safe mode in XP, the PC DOES NOT hangs.
    Thank you in advance.

Its followed by "Sorry being unprofessional". But when my hard earning money draining, its obvious. Anyway, Do you have answer to my request ? Or only guiding me for proper language ? If you have ans plz give me too.

  • External Serial ATA versus Firewire HD

I am debating between getting the LaCie d2 Hard Drive Extreme with Triple (300GB) and the LaCie d2 Hard Drive Serial ATA (400GB).
I would be backing up a PowerMac G5 (160GB HD), Dell Laptop (80GB HD) and an ibook (40GB HD). They are connected by ethernet cables via Belkin router which is also connected to a Motorola cable modem (Time Warner/ISP). The PowerMac G5 would be running Retrospect.
If I am planning on using one of them to run backups at home, which would be faster? I would think the LaCie HD Serial ATA to be faster. Maybe it would not make a difference with my current setup. Also, I am probably limiting my self since there are no USB or Firewire ports on the LaCie HD Serial ATA.
On a side note...the Maxtor OneTouch II 500GB External Firewire looks interesting. The size of the drive is definitely a plus. I am just not sure if I am comfortable backing up to a larger drive in case it unexpectedly fails. Plus I read some users getting locked out because of the Maxtor's built in "DriveLock" feature. Has anyone had good experiences with a 500GB drive? I generally hear mixed experiences regardless of the manufacturer.
Here are the links to the PDF datasheets for the products I am considering for reference:

    Thanks!
    Power Mac G5 / 2GHz   Mac OS X (10.3.9)

Oh, nobody seems to have answered your post so I'll give it a stab.
1: Serial ATA (SATA) is the fastest standard interface on PowerMac's only (far as I know), it's the interface connecting the internal drives. To get a external SATA you will need a SATA PCI card and external SATA drives. Unfortunatly other Mac's cannot connect to SATA as they use Firewire 400/800/USB. (there might be adpaters) So this might not be the best way to go. A triple interface external drive like the LaCie's Firewire 800/400/USB would be best for moving around different Mac's. However that doesn't mean you can't transfer data through the PowerMac from other Mac's to the external SATA drives, but your are bottlenecked by the slowest interface in the chain. So if you use a Firewire 400 network between the Mac's at that interfaces speed will be your over all performance. (Fastest interfaces: SATA, Firewire 800, then 400, then USB)
2: Windows uses a different disk formating than Mac's, so this will cause complications backing up a Windows machine to a common use drive. I advise getting a external drive just for that machine and "ghosting" or cloning the PC drive to it. Keeps the Windows problems off your Mac drives.
3: Another seperate drive for the iBook to clone to would be best. But you can take a larger drive and partition it to clone your PowerMac G5 to one partition and the iBook to another. Seperate drives is better as this gives you room to expand and use the drives for something else also if the partition map gets corrupted then you might have have trouble recovering data using utility software. Donationware Carbon Copy Cloner (visit the forums and read instructions for proper cloning) can help you clone or search Apple's site for Deja Vu for a great auto-cloning software.
4: When your using your network for the internet you can't be backing up, you need to creat a new network. Mac's can run more than one network at once. Via Airport, Ethernet, Firewire etc, each doing something different. So in your case a simple Firewire target disk mode may work perfectly for backing up the iBook through the PowerMac G5. All you have to do is use a 6-pin firewire 400 cable between the two machines and hold T and boot the iBook (or the PowerMac) the hard drive of the other appears on desktop of the other which simple drag n' drop can occur. Cloning requires booting and running cloning software from the machine being cloned and it will replace the other drive completely with the first drive (it's a clone) as this is the only way to duplicate a bootable drive. Cloning is best done drive to drive and it's not advised to run differnet Mac's with bootable clones from other Mac's as different Mac's have different OS's for their hardware.
5: A lot of these "big' drives are actually two drives in one case. Too much data in one hardware basket is asking for trouble. Plus they may be hot.
6: I have written some performance and other drive info (test download)
Large slow filled boot drives seriously affect Mac OS X performance.
    clcik me
7: If your looking for internal drives, I recommend a 16MB cache to help the performance so look at this site
    http://www.barefeats.com/hard63.html
8: You should read the book Mac OS X Tiger: The Missing Manual, it gives detailed steps and information to set up networks and other things.
    Good luck and Happy Holidays.
