Serious Problem on start up...related to 32" monitor???

I recently got a 32" HD LCD monitor and hooked up my MacMini to it. Upon restarting the MacMini after doing a switch between the old monitor and the new monitor while the MacMini was on, the MacMini refused to load, only showing a flashing question mark.
I assumed this meant that it could not find a system folder, so I attached a firewire drive and held down the option key and restarted. It still could not find any system folders.
I then turned it off and switched back to the original 19" display it had been using and it worked fine.
I then ran the most recent version of TechToolPro to test the system, and the system passed everything on one of the more comprehensive tests.
Out of curiousity/stupidity, I repeated this experiment exactly. When it came to switching it back to the 19" monitor, it still couldn't find the system folder.
I then tried a number of different troubleshooting options which are below in the order I tried them:
+Unplugging and re-plugging in the monitor cable while the computer was off.
+Unplugging and re-plugging in the monitor adapter while the computer was off.
+Inserting MacMini system cd and holding down the "c" key.
+Trying to boot from a firewire drive.
+Trying to use the MacMini as a target firewire drive: boot with "t" key.
When I still had no system folder showing up after I held down the option key, I would then hit enter on the keyboard and I would get a black screen followed by a white screen that said, "Invalid memory access at: %5FRO: ff846360 %SRR1: 00003030 and then some other stuff about copyright and what not...
+I then erased by PRAM by holding commandshift+PR and got the same results.
+I then reset the PMU and got the computer to work like nothing had happend (all the preferences were still there, everything worked fine)
+On restart, things fell apart again, and I only got a blank gray screen (not even the question mark showed up).
+I restarted again, without the VGA monitor and I can hear the computer starting up and processing everything, but the processor sounds don't stop (I've been listening for an hour now) and when I plug in the monitor cord, I get a blank blue screen (like the login screen). If I plug in the monitor cord while it is turned off and then I turn it on, I again get the gray screen.
Hope I was detailed enough,
Alex
Mini   Mac OS X (10.4.6)   512 MB, 1.42 G4, 15 months old, 80 GB

Well it seems to be working now...I ended up restarting in safe mode by holding down the shift key and all of a sudden it all worked.

  • Serious problem at Start Up

I have just started to have this problem when I start the computer. I have had this machine for 18 months without a problem. Now when I start the computer I get this little icon in the middle of the screen, a folder icon, with what looks like the "finder" face in it. Then it switches to a "?" question mark. Then back to the finder face. Both very small and inside the folder icon. It is in the very center of the screen.
This goes on for maybe an hour.. or more. Then the computers runs, but very, very, slow.
It doesn't matter if I power down or use the drop-down turn off, the problem is always there at start up.
    HELP!!! Please....

I can't boot from install disk, and computer will do
nothing but as described. It appears that no real
help is available as of yet in this discussion forum.
I loved my Mac-mini until this problem came up, but I
can't see spending hundreds of dollars taking it to
be professionally diagnosed and repaired. It is sad
that it only lasted a year and a half, so I feel
ripped off. If I can't find some suggestions or
answers in the forums, I will scrap it, and seriously
doubt I can justify buying another Mac. My husband is
a windows user, so he is no help and very
unsympathetic. It won’t boot from hard drive or
install disk, what does a person do in this
situation? Would it help to put in a new hard drive?
Would that cause it to boot from install disk? This
is the darnedest thing I have ever encountered with a
computer of any type. Is something wrong with the
motherboard? Could it be a virus or something?
    Please help!!!!
It isn't likely that a new hard drive would help in this situation. If the drive itself were the problem, you would be able to boot from the original install disk (holding the C key down while the system is starting up) because that contains a valid startup volume that the system would recognize. On the other hand, the fact the system gets as far as showing you a folder with a flashing question mark tells us that it is passing the power-on self test, so the hardware is at least functional. It has been known for motherboard faults to exist but still permit the system to pass the POST (which occurs right after the power button is pressed) but it's not common.
First thing is to make sure you're using a recognized keyboard - in other words, not a cordless one or some other that the system might not recognize properly during startup. If it's a standard USB keyboard then it should be OK, but if not, try and find/borrow a USB keyboard and mouse. Then, if the C key during startup still doesn't work and the mini's original install disk is in the drive (and it MUST be the install disk that came with the system, not one that belongs to another Mac), then press and hold the OPTION key (by default this would be the ALT key if you're using a Windows keyboard) during startup instead of C. This takes a bit of time (sometimes a few minutes) but should take you to a screen where it shows any available MacOS volumes the system can boot from. In a fully working system that would usually be the internal drive (and the install disk of course). If you get to that screen, you can then select the install disk and get the system to boot to it from that.
Assuming you can get the mini booted that way, it tells you that the hardware is fine, with the possible exception of the hard drive, which even then is likely not damaged so much as partially scrambled. Running Disk Utility would allow you to check the drive and attempt to repair any issues. If, and only if, it reports an error that indicates a hardware fault, (usually accompanied by a S.M.A.R.T. status indicating anything but 'verified') would it be likely you then need a new drive. Mostly, the problem would be resolvable either with a utility such as Alsoft's DiskWarrior, or by reformatting with Disk Utility and reinstalling MacOS.
If the system doesn't show the install disk or internal drive in the boot loader screen after you've held the option key during startup, then it suggests there's a problem with the drive interface - which may be little more than a loose, disconnected or damaged cable. That would require some attention inside the casing, but may not entail a new logic board.
See if you can get the system as far as the boot loader screen by holding the option key down. Press it down when you hear the chime, and hold it. Let us know what happens. Also let us know what was running on the system when it was last used, and if you had had previously done anything like shut it down by holding the power button. Such detail could help us work out what the problem might be.
Oh, and no, at least this is not a virus issue or related to anything of the sort.

  • Serious Problems with anything IPOD related

I've recently had trouble with my IPOD. I connect it to the computer and see the charging splash screen for a few seconds and then it stops. My computer doesent detect it at all (like it used to) and my IPOD wont even turn on. I read some troubleshooting on here and went ahead and uninstalled everything. I uninstalled quicktime, IPOD, IPOD updater, and ITUNES. I then downloaded both ITUNES and IPOD updated and in each instance I get this very very weird command line parameter:
    Command line parameters:
    /L language ID
/S Hide intialization dialog. For silent mode use: /S /v/qn.
    /V parameters to MsiExec.exe
    /UA<url to InstMsiA.exe>
    /UW<url to InstMsiW.exe>
    /UM<url to msi package>
After I receive that message I click "Ok" and absolutely nothing happens. It never did this before, I never had problems with my ipod or itunes before, nothing. I have no idea what the catalyst for all of this is. Any help is greatly appreciated.

    BUMP!!
Now when I plug my IPOD in it actually has a splash screen. It shows a folder icon with an exclamation point. I imagine it shows that because I uninstalled ALL IPOD related software. The problem is, I STILL cant install any IPOD material, I get the same error code I posted earlier over and over again.

  • Serious Problem with Start-up Classes

    Hi,
I'm using Start-up classes (implementing com.evermind.server.OC4JStartup) to automatically cache some metadata on Server Start-up.
Its a great feature and works really well on OC4J Standalone, but I'm having difficulties getting it to work with the Full OAS.
My code looks up a servlet then passes requests into that servlet to cache the data.
However, when I look up the Servlet (@ http://127.0.0.1/ismart/iSmartServlet/Dispatcher) I get a 500 error returned. But if I got to that URL in a browser on the PC itself, all is returned ok.
Is there anything that I am doing wrong here ?
Has anyone come across something similar ?
    Cheers,
    Ronan

I'm having similar problem - computer gets a flashing ? on startup, started off os install and disk utility, first aid - shows HD but will not verify. Disk Warrior may be my only hope at this point as I've gone through the list provided by Apple. I also hooked up an external drive and it did give me a verify disk option on it? So my question is, I believe it's a disk directory problem, but what are the chances it's a bad hard drive? Any tell, tell signs? I hear the drive spinning but nothing really out of the ordinary that I can tell.
    Thanks

  • Lookout OPC Client – Asynchronous I/O and Update Rate serious problems (Sequence of data)

I am using the Lookout OPCClient driver to connect to AB PLCs (EtherNet/IP protocol) and power measurement equipment (Modbus TCP protocol). The OPC server is the NI OPC Servers. The data that are read out from PLCs and PMs are energy meter readings, energy counters, power, voltage, current, frequency, power factor and el. energy quality measurements (THD). That energy meter readings are being stored in SQL database.
I am experiencing a serious problem regarding the accuracy of the meter readings. Several times per day, randomly, meter readings are losing the time sequence. For example, sequence is: 167, after few seconds 165, 166.  In other words, present value followed by two previous old values. That generates a serious problem in our application that is expecting a naturally rising sequence of counter values.
Analyzing further, I isolated the problem to the connection between Lookout OPCClient and OPC Server. I made a simple application in Lookout 6.7 (opcproc.lkp, attached) with OPCClient parameters: NIOPCServers, OPC2, Asynchronus I/O, Update rate: 10000, Deadband: 0.0, that is reading just one tag from NI OPC Servers demo application (simdemo.opf).
By using OPC diagnostic tool from NI OPC Servers I record the sequence of OPC requests and responses.  I found out that OPCClient sends every 2.5 sec “IOPCAsyncIO2::Refresh2()” call that is request for refreshing of all items in one OPC group. Few milliseconds later OPC Sever responds with callback function “IOPCDataCallback:: OnDataChange()(Device Refresh)” that actually refresh the data.
This periodic sequence is intrinsic to the OPCClient and cannot be disabled or changed (by my knowledge).  This sequence is periodically interrupted by “IOPCDataCallback:: OnDataChange()” caused by update rate parameter of OPCClient (client is subscribed to server for periodic update of changed items).
In the case of demo application on every 4 refresh callbacks caused by refresh requests (2.5 sec) there is one update subscription callback determined by Update rate (10 sec).
    QUESTION 1:
What is the purpose of update sequence and update rate when we have every 2.5 sec fresh values?
    PROBLEM
The problem arises when we have a large number of items in OPC group. In that case the OPC Server starts to queue refresh requests because they cannot be fulfilled in 2.5 sec time because of large number of I/O points that must be scanned. At the same time update subscription callbacks are running at the period determined by Update rate. I observed in my production system that regular update callbacks has higher priority than refresh callbacks from the queue. That causes the loosing of timed sequence of data. After the update callback with fresh data, sometimes follow one or two refresh callbacks from queue with old (invalid) data. By adjusting Update rate parameter (1 hour, 2hours …) I can postpone the collision of data refreshes but I cannot eliminate it. Furthermore, the 2.5 sec automatic refresh are large burden for systems with many I/O points.
    QUESTION 2:
Is there a way to disable automatic refresh request every 2.5 sec and just use update requests determined by Update rate?
    QUESTION 3:
Is there a way (or parameter) to change the period of automatic refresh (2.5 sec)?
This problem is discovered for Lookout 6.5, 6.6 and 6.7 so I could say it is intrinsic to OPCClient. If I use synchronous I/O requests there is not an automatic refresh, but that is not an option for large systems.

The physical connection from LV to the switch is (I believe) copper crossover to fiber converter into a switch.  Then, fiber from the switch to the end device (relay).  The relay has all of the typical modbus registries and has been verified by inducing signals in to the system and measured/polled in LabVIEW and observed Variable Monitor.  I am working with LV 8.2 and 8.5.
An OPC server would only add an additional translation of addressing within the configuration.  The only real draw back would be the network overhead required to do this processing and not being representative of the end design configuration.
I will reiterated my question in another way:
I must answer the question to management that relates to data collection, test results and analysis; how often are you polling the client in relation to the outcomes measured?  At this time I can not point at any configuration in the set up and execution that directs the data framing rate.  I only measure the traffic and work with results.  This needs to be clearly identified based on the relay modbus/tcp design capability of supporting an fixed number of client requests per second.
For testing purposes, I would like to be able to stress the system to failure and have prove capabilities with measured data.  The present problem is that I have no basis to establish varying polling rates that effect the measured data transmission.
This raises another question.  What handles the Variable Monitor data requests and how is this rate determined?
Thanks for your interest in my efforts.

  • Apple please read: Serious problem with Spotlight indexing!

My MacPro has a serious problem and I don't know what to do: Spotlight has been indexing for two weeks now, day and night. When I click the spotlight icon, the info box says that it is "calculating time", which I guess means that OSX tries to find out how long the indexing will take. Consol reports this line again and again (for the last two weeks):
    "...pple.launchd(1) (com.digidesign.fwfamily.helper (10466) posix_spawnp/"/Library/Application Support/ Digidesign/fireWire/DigidesignFireWireHelper", ...): No such file or directory"
I removed Digidesign ProTools from this Mac two months ago, and I thought every files were removed. Obviously, Spotlight is trying to remove a file it cannot find... When I set all files to visible (with Terminal), there is NO file with the required name on my Mac.
What is the solution? How do I get rid of this problem? It creates other problem, like stopping any security update I try to install. It also makes saving files veeeery slow, and applications freeze with the spinning wheel for half a minute or more quite often.
I tried to reinstall MacOSX (archive and install), but it did not help. Then I had to authorize lots of plugins (for my music software) again, very annoying (and I lost some authorizations).
Any serious help is what I need.

    Hi!
This is another problem that is not related to Spotlight...
launchd is the (sort of) mother of all processes on Mac OS X.
It looks for "LaunchDaemons" and "LaunchAgents" in two folders "/Library" and "/System/Library" (there should be subfolders with the name "LaunchDaemons" and "LaunchAgents").
Go into these subfolders and delete any trace that's left from Digidesign Protools...
That should help to get rid off the error messages.
Then look for other Console messages that start with "mds", "mdworker" or alike. The name of every process that is related to Spotlight starts with the letters "md" (metadata)...
Check with the utility Activity Monitor which process is hogging CPU and/or disk...
    Cheers,
    Walter

  • SERIOUS PROBLEM Synching Palm Pre Plus (Verizon) with Companion Link OS USB -- NEED HELP!!

I am having serious problems with Companion Link OS USB synching with Palm Desktop 4.2 via USB on my Verizon Palm Pre.
The Verizon phone is my second Palm Pre.  (The original Palm Pre which came from Germany worked perfectly with Companion Link).
The Verizon Palm Pre is a Palm Pre Plus.
As noted I utilize Palm Desktop software Version 4.2.0 on my computer.
I started out with Companion Link software Version 3.0 Build 3096  -- and have worked my way up to Version 4.0 Build 4008 over the last few months, and have spend hundreds of hours trying to solve the synchronization issue described in detail below.
The Companion Link software is configured to ONLY synch one way
FROM my Palm Desktop on my computer to the phone via USB
(I don’t want to put my contacts and calendar on the web, NOR do I like the way Google contacts works, even if I DID want to).
When I synch the Palm Desktop to the Palm Pre the following occurs:
    The Calendar synchs fine.
The contacts do NOT synch properly.
I have 1,500+ contacts in my Palm Desktop.
For some inexplicable reason, during the synch process the approximately 1,200+ of my contacts are compiled under ONE contact listing (John Davis). The icon by the contact shows that TWO contacts are linked under John Davis, however when I click on the icon to see who is linked under John Davis, NO contacts appear.  But I have the option to link additional contacts under John Davis if desired (AS IF!!).
So, 1,200 of my contacts do NOT appear in the contact list.  If I want to call my husband, and type in Bruce, NOTHING comes up.  BUT if I type in his phone number, the listing for John Davis comes up and shows me all the numbers that legitimately belong to my husband.  Ditto my friend Susan, etc for the other 1,200 contacts buried under the contact listing for John Davis on the phone.
SO, if any of these 1,200+ people, call me or text message me, my phone tells me I have a call or a text from John Davis.
I cannot look up my contacts to call them or text them because the contacts do not actually APPEAR under John Davis (If the phone were just linking them and SHOWED them, I could manually de-link them).
FURTHER, when I get a text message from anyone who is compiled under John Davis, the text message is truncated.  I can see the notification that I got a text message from John Davis, and I can see the first few words in the notification area, but if I open the text message, it appears to be blank (this only happens after synching Companion Link – before linking Companion Link all text messages are fine.  AND, if I get a text message from one of the 300 or so contacts that actually synch into my phone correctly, the text messages are perfectly fine and work normally.
I have worked with BOTH the Companion Link technical support people AND the Palm technical support people extensively in an effort to solve this problem.
I have done Full Secure Erases and started over trying to get the phone to synch more than 35 times at this point.
I have tried synching from different computers
I have had Palm replace the phone TWICE (so this is actually my third Verizon Palm Pre Plus).
I have run Web OS Doctor
    Nothing helps.
Every time the phone does exactly the same thing described above.
When I synch the phone it tells me:
Web OS:     Added             1543/1543    Contacts to the phone
                PC:              Updated          1232/1232     Contacts
(The 1232 contacts being updated are the 1232 that are compiled under the one contact listing of course).
Needless to say, Companion Link says it is the phone.
Palm says it is the Companion Link third party software.
Since it is the same 1,200+ contacts every time, I have had both Palm and Companion Link examine my contact database to see if they could identify anything amok about these 1,200+ contacts, but there doesn’t appear to be any difference between those contacts and the 300 or so that synch into the phone properly.
Companion Link has told me variously that:
    -  This is a very rare Synergy issue and that I must turn off the Synergy feature on the phone (would that this could be done per Palm it can NOT be done).
    -  Only TWO people have ever had this issue (me and someone else unnamed);
    -  That this is a common problem with the Palm Pre, but Companion Link works fine with every other phone
    -  I e-mailed them my contact list and they SWORE to me that they were unable to duplicate my problem on their computers.  (I don’t believe this)
    -  AND has most recently told me that there is nothing more they can do for me, that I will have to find a solution myself.
Palm has said that there is nothing they can do for me if third party software doesn’t work properly with the phone.
This does appear to be the Synergy feature run amok.  But how to correct it???????
I love the Palm Pre.  I love my Palm Desktop 4.2 software.
If I can’t get this fixed shortly, I guess I’m going to have to move back to a Treo 680.
Does anyone out there please, please, please have a solution or a suggestion that will help?
Post relates to: Pre Plus p101vzw (Verizon)

    Hello,
I am almost as frustrated as you.  Purchased my pre plus back in may and bought the companion link software immediately  ( I have synced via usb for years on other palms to lotus notes)  All the information from companion link states that it does the job.  I only need to sync my calendar, no contacts.   I have put in a ridiculous amount of time with palm, my IT department and Companion link,  IT HAS NEVER EVER EVER WORKED.   I deleted, re installed, upgraded, tried different steps in different orders, I have gotten a new phone, tried it on multiple computers.  NOTHING WORKS.   Probably been through all these steps listed 50 times by now.  Actually I think that companion link doesn't work for palm pre plus, they just are not willing to say so and advertise that is does work.
I am extremely disappointed in my pre because of this.  I did my research before making my purchase, it appeared possible.    I WAS a long term palm user.  Currently looking at new phones and never again a palm.  Companion link should be more careful about what they say they can do.  One of the service techs actually told me that if I wanted it to work I should ditch my palm.  That's service for ya.
Good luck,  the fight got the better of me.  I am done.

  • Severe problem while starting Lenovo 3000 N200

    Dear friends & experts,
I am using Lenovo 3000N200 0769BDG laptop. I have following problems while starting the system.
Recently my system was hacked against which I installed an Anti-Malware software. It showed that the system was free from any Malware.(But believe me, it is true that the system was hacked.). But each time on starting the system, a  black and white window  is being displayed which contains the following message:
We apologize for the inconvenience, but Windows didnot start successfully. A recent hardware or software change might have caused this.
If your computer stopped responding, restarted unexpectedly, or was automatically shut down to protect your files and folders, choose Last Known Good Configuration  to revert to the most recent settings that worked.
If a previous startup attempt was interrupted due to a power failure or because the Power or Reset button was pressed , or if you aren't sure what caused the problem, choose Start Windows Normally.
    Safe  Mode
    Safe Mode with Networking
    Safe Mode with Command Prompt
Last Known Good Configuration (your most recent settings that worked)
    Start Windows Normally
Use the up and down arrow keys to move the highlight to your choice.
    Seconds until Windows starts:30.....1
After 30 seconds, the Windows logo is displayed immediately followed by a Blue screen which lasts for 1 second and the system restarts.  I tried all the options listed above-- from Safe Mode to Start Windows Normally but the same problem recurrs. And the system doesn't shutdown until I press the power button.
I have a licensed version of Windows Xp SP3 as OS. I tried to repair the system using WinXP CD but I found the following message:
Setup did not find any hard disk drives installed in your computer.
Make sure any hard disk drives are powered on and properly connected to your computer, and that any disk-related hardware configuration is correct. This may involve running a manufacturer-supplied diagnostic or setup program.
Setup cannot continue. To quit Setup, press F3.
A point to be noted is that earlier, I removed the Rescue & Recovery from my system  thinking that it might not be of much use and now, I lament for it.
When I press F3 the same window appeared and the same problem recurred.
I tried to access the files in my hard disk using Ubuntu CD and it was successful. I used Lenovo hardware quick test to check for any hardware faults, and my system passed all the tests.
I request you to help me in solving this problem so that I can continue my studies peacefully.
    Thanking you,
    With regards,
    T.I. Kiran

First off, being "hacked" and having viruses/malware are two different things. Someone hacking your computer doesn't really mean you have a virus/malware, it means an actual person gained access to your computer remotely and did something to it.
More than likely you got a virus that corrupt your Windows System directory and/or registry. Anti-malware software won't necescarily detect all viruses, especially executable that run commands to simply delete files.
The blue screen you're seeing is what us technicians call the BSOD (blue screen of death), it's an indication that there is a direct corruption with the core files that Windows requires to function properly.
As an IT Technician, if this were one of my laptops or one of my end-users, I would simply reload it with a fresh copy of Windows XP. There's a possiblity that all data you had on the laptop is gone because if the Windows core files are corrupt/missing, then that could very well mean your system was wiped completely but the boot table is in tact, hence the fact that you even have the option to boot Windows XP.
One other option I would suggest is try to reinstall Windows XP. Sometimes if you have the right copy of the install, it will let you reinstall the Windows XP core files, leaving your programs, files and directories in tact.
    Good luck.

  • I've kept the old version od imovie (6.0.4) through three migrations and now have it on a mac 10.6.8. i prefer it to the new one, but it has recently begun to give me serious problems. is it becoming obsolete?

i've always thought imovie 6.0.4 was the superior product. i've used it edit semi-profesional films. its easy and intuitive, and always gives you what you want, while looking profesional. i have final cut pro, which i use when i have more time or the project is of more importance, but i still love the ease and simplicity of the old imovie. i've migrated it over 4 computers and it has worked fine till about a week ago. it now takes up to 20 minutes to load, frequently drops out. leaves phantom and relic snipets of audio. is there any way i can fix this problem and keep my beloved imovie 6.0.4? can download it from a third party? are the issues because the .app is going obsolete or are there just new bugs on my computer? i've recently uninstalled all my adobe products and put them onto another computer, could that be it? help me obi won, you're my only hope!

    klaus 1,
thanx for the reply. i'm on a 10.6.8 snow leopard.
yes, it did arrive via migration, but had been working well for over 2 years, and two years before that on a 10.5, where it had migrated from a mac book g4 where i used it regularly. through all that time and migration, not a single problem
i can't pinpoint the exact 'original' problem, because i'm currently working on two different editing jobs (one serious [a kickstarted campaign] the other, not so much, for my son's pre-school graduation, i was making the school a little video for their website). so during this time, i'm using a combo of; imovie, adobe premiere and final cut pro. and i've had so much pulsing through my computer (and external hard drives), literally hundreds of gigs of HD video, tons of tiff and jpeg files, and much mp4 and aif music files. i often had three or four major applications all open and running simultaneously, so who knows how this all started. but one day, i flipped open my mac, and just clicked on imovie, not a file mind you, but just the icon, and it took like 2 minutes to load (usually 5-10 seconds). i made sure all other apps and windows were closed and tried it again - now 3 minutes to load and it drops out mid edit. and it just kept getting worse.
AND THEN, AFTER IWROTE ABOVE 'I  -  ME' MADE THINGS, MUCH, MUCH WORSE.
i was aware that there is an old quicktime 7 that gets installed in a 10.6.8 to supplement the newer quicktime x and the various other programs, including imovie, that still use qt 7. i was a bit confused why there even is an icon for qt 7 in the utilities folder, since you never open it directly, it just works behind the scenes. but whatever.
after imovie started acting up, i looked up to see what programs that imovie uses, thinking the problem might be there and found an article that said there was actually an even earlier version of quicktime, (qt 7.0.3 i think) that was specifically made for imovie, but there hadn't been enough major changes in qt to bother imovie, but (there is always a but) there were changes coming that would begin to affect imovie. since the article (i wish i could link it here, sorry) was a year old, i  thought maybe the damaging upgrade was already made. so i found this older version of quicktime (the 7.0.3 version) and tried to install it, thinking it would fix my issue, i'd finish the edit, then delete it. but when i tried to open it, it told me, a newer version of of qt was on my computer and i couldn't install it. so very impulsively and idiotically i uninstalled quicktime 7, thinking i would just reinstall it later. but that's when everything went wrong.
SO I MUST STRESS THIS TO EVERYONE! NEVER NEVER NEVER UNINSTALL QUICKTIME.
apparently quick time x is preinstalled into the 10.6.8, in such a way, that its interconnected with like 12 other programs, that will all begin to act erradictly after it is uninstalled. then those 12 programs will each affect 5 more and soon, your computer, then your hard-drive is blown. i tried reinstalling quicktime, but could not. i tried every conceivable way, but could not even find it in any folder. it was gone. and so was qt x.
so when i uninstalled quicktime 7, it affected quick time x in such a way that it stopped working, then could not be found. then all h**l broke loose. every program began to run slowly and started dropping out. functionally, the computer became so slow, it was useless. even typing became slow. i still did not know about the 'never uninstall quick time rule' yet, so i looked for the problem else where.
i opened up activity monitor, and there were no programs eating up cpu, nothing that suspicious. but when i switched activity monitor to show usage in a descending order, i saw kernel task was using between 500-700% cpu. my fans started running furiously and my battery life dropped in half. i would switch off the computer, start it with reset, things would go well for a half hour, then kernel would spike, the computer would get red hot and the fans would go as fast as propellers. since the kickstarter campaign i was working on was on deadline, i had to keep working. so i went out and bought a laptop stand that allows airflow under the computer and has its own fan to cool the computer, that worked for about a day. but since the fan on the stand ran on power from the usb of my computer, my battery life went from very good, to completely dead. nothing. accidentally unplug the cord for a millisecond second, and the computer turns off. when i restart, the time is set to the day and time i bought the computer, and would undo my internet, and i'd have to reset my whole connection.
i spent twelve straight hours, through the night, using recovery programs, like pacifist, stellar phoenix, and others, but could not get quick time back. finally (like 4 hours ago) i called apple, and although i have no warranty or apple care, they took my call and we tried some things, which didn't work.
i had already run disk utility and exhausted all other options. and i was told by apple that since my computer was preloaded (no discs) i could not, erase and reboot, which wasn't really an option anyway.
so apple being the best run company in the country, sends me a new down loadable version of imovie, quick time 7 and quick time ten.
it hasn't arrived yet, but how cool is that?
i have to say though, i'm a bit worried about reinstalling by disc and have no real guarantee that everything will return to normal.
not to mention my battery is dead and snow leopard gives you no way of getting to it. it has to be replaced at an official apple certified store.
so lesson here, never, ever, never, uninstall quicktime. i hope no one else makes this mistake.
    thanx and good luck.

  • Serious problems including battery overheating

My dad and I both bought Revolutions and have had the same issues with our phones (listed below). We truly believe that the LG Revolution is a defective phone - what are the odds that we would both get "lemons"? While at the Verizon store on 3/13, the store, corporate customer service, and LG claimed to not be able to do anything for us except send us refurbished phones or return our phones to LG and have them worked on (HA. Seriously? Go without a phone? We don't have a land line anymore - might as well dump us on a deserted island). We were notified today, 3/15 that the phones were in the store ready to pick up, but they didn't come with new batteries! SERIOUSLY?!?! THE MAJOR ISSUE WITH BOTH IS THE BATTERY OVERHEATING! These phones are bound to either burn us or kill us. We don't want someone else's "fixed" phone, because it will just do the same thing! Unless Verizon will help us, I'm afraid we are going to get iPhones from another provider, as well as go to the BBB to file a formal complaint. I really don't want to, but I can't believe how much we have spent for our little death machines. We really hope Verizon will cooperate and uphold the standards they set forth in their employee handbook. We would love to be contacted by someone who can help. Please, don't give us the run-around. As anyone can see, factory resets, changing settings, etc. don't work. We have put up with those suggestions for months with no improvement.
    My Dad's Revolution:
Bought LG Revolution ~July 3, 2011 for $250 + taxes & fees, car charger, (and eventually extra chargers). Over $300 total put in.
Battery gets overheated to the point that the phone is too hot to touch. This drains the battery from any percentage of battery to 0% in a matter of minutes. FIRE HAZARD IN YOUR POCKET! My dad's chest was almost burned! If it is too hot to touch on the outside, what is it doing to the guts of the phone?!
Not receiving text messages and picture messages that are sent
Internet doesn’t work properly - only when it feels like it
    Loses data connection between 3G/4G/Wireless
Not always getting voice mail notifications
Phone burned up 2 wall chargers
    Freezing
Phone is ringing, but the “answer call” screen doesn’t come up, so there is no way to answer the call
Phone rings once and then shows a missed call. When calling the person back, they say it rang the normal number of times before going to voicemail.
    Not keeping a charge
Called sister next door and Dad could hear them, but she couldn't hear him. He called back and he could hear her fine, but she said he was very "scratchy" - keep in mind this is NEXT DOOR.
    My Revolution:
Bought LG Revolution ~July 9, 2011 for $250 + taxes & fees, (eventually, multiple) car charger(s), insurance plan, (eventually, additional wall chargers) $400+ for the total cost
Battery gets overheated to the point that the phone is too hot to touch. This drains the battery from any percentage of battery to 0% in a matter of minutes. FIRE HAZARD IN YOUR POCKET! My thigh has almost been burned! If it is too hot to touch on the outside, what is it doing to the guts of the phone?!
Paying for “Unlimited Data” and phone constantly says “Mobile Network State: Disconnected”
Not receiving text messages and picture messages that are sent
Not being able to send text messages or picture messages
Getting the same text 3-4 times
Sending a text once and recipient getting it 3-4 times
Internet/apps don’t work due to no data
    Loses data connection between 3G/4G/Wireless
Not always getting voice mail notifications – getting voice mails 14+ days late. This creates a serious problem for time sensitive messages.
Phone burned up 4 wall chargers and 2 car chargers
    Freezing
Phone is ringing, but the “answer call” screen doesn’t come up, so there is no way to answer the call
Not keeping a charge. On a daily basis between 7:30am-12:30pm, I go from 100% to 20%. In the store on 3/13, the Verizon rep witnessed my phone go from 81% to 68% in about an hour
Phone rings once and then shows a missed call. When calling the person back, they say it rang the normal number of times before going to voicemail.
In the beginning, I would get email notifications and after I would read them, it would appear that they were “marked as read”, however, after I back out of the program, it notifies me of the same emails that I just read, only they’re once again “unread”. Now, I’m not getting ANY notifications of email except in the top drop-down screen, which if I click on it, I can see the emails, but after I back out, they disappear because the program decides not to work.
GPS is unreliable. It often says that I'm 2+ miles away from where I actually am.
The phone does what it wants to do when it wants to do it – not when you tell it to! All of our previous phones have given us reliable, clear service. What is wrong with this picture? HELP!!!

Hi I recently had the same problem with the LG Revolution. In fact it had been one of multiple replacement models that I had received in just a few weeks. The first two devices I had problems with them recycling power, I would make calls and they would make the same call multiple times i.e I would get through to the person I was intending on calling and the phone would call them on like a three way call asking me to merge the conversation I was only having with one other person... The 2nd replacement only lasted a few days. I was playing Words with Friends it gave me a sim error out of nowhere shut down. I checked the card after removing the battery and powered it back up. I was fine for about 10 minutes shut down and I was never able to turn it on again. The next phone they sent I received a few day ltr was the frosting on the cake. As soon as I tried to set it up the problems began. The phone was recycling power so much that it wouldn't fully power up before shutting down. Tech support insisted it had to be the battery, that there was no way they sent me 3 bad phones within 2 1/2 weeks... The new battery was sent over night. So I charged it up and gave it a go. It seemed fine at first, but then started acting up again. I resorted to it wasn't the battery and figured when I got to a land line  or another line I would call Tech support. I was driving the phone was in my right lower scrub pocket apparently because of whatever mechanical defect it had overheated and burned me. I have been kind of at a loss when it comes to the Customer Service Dept. I have reported the incident to them even called to find out who to send my co pay bills too, no response. However they did have the nerve to send me a text asking for the device back or they were going to charge me $500. Now I'm thinking may be if people started taking things like this to the media they would act on it...

  • Serious problem with my iPod Classic/iTunes

I have a 6th Generation iPod classic (80 GB), and recently, I have been having some serious problems with it.
When I connect it to iTunes, there is usually no problem, it shows up, plays and displays the music correctly, etc. However, if I try to ADD any music to it, iTunes will freeze, then close, and within 5 minutes, my entire computer will freeze completely, and be shut off. For whatever reason, happen when my iPod finally disconnects because my computer turned off, all of my music is missing from the library (This doesn't happen every time it freezes, because I try to disconnect my iPod manually before everything freezes). The music is still on the iPod, (it says that I have XX.X GB of "other" instead of music/videos), but it doesn't show up. When I plug in my iPod, iTunes says that there was a problem and I need to restore it. The first time this happened, I lost over 5,800 songs, but I forgave Apple, because these things do occasionally happen, plus I had no idea what exactly went on. The SECOND time happened within the same week, after I had put 800 songs back on the restored iPod. The first time happened when I was using iTunes 10 (which is seriously buggy on my computer, and freezes often), so I switched to iTunes 9 (still buggy, but doesn't freeze quite as much), and the same thing happened. So now I'm thinking it's my iPod's fault. My iPod does a whole host of minor problems over time such as making certain songs cut off at a certain specific point for no reason (Always the same song, always the same cut off point, and I can't fast forward past it, I also can't delete the songs because if I highlight them on iTunes, iTunes will freeze, and if I find them under the music folder in iPod control, my computer will freeze), freezing the entire iPod for seemingly no reason, and somehow messing up my album artwork (it will appear as "Colourful Static"), along with alot more.
I know this is a troublesome problem, but if anyone could somehow shine some light on this problem, it would be tremendously appreciated.
    Thank you
    -Eric Luna

Unfortunately, when a hard drive starts clicking that means it's going bad. The mechanism is having trouble reading the drive. Since the iPod is mostly just a harddrive and a battery I have a feeling that this is your problem.
    watch this video. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wMm6c3fr-fU
about 25ss in is where the clicking starts. If it sounds like that, but softer and more muffled since it is a smaller drive that is being enclosed then I think you might be SOL. Maybe if you're iPod is still under warranty you can get a credit and go for a touch and avoid moving parts all together?
