Server Admin: VPN Connection Window all blank entries

Using Server Admin, when I goto..
VPN: Connections
It says I have 41 PPTP Connections, but they are all blanked out. There is no username, IP, Internal IP, Protocol, or Connected For. I wish I could attach a picture to show it. Only thing that keeps showing up in the error log is:

Any chance it's a firewall issue?

Does nobody from Apple read this list?
My server still isn't working properly, and it's deeply frustrating.
Having done a lot of investigating I discovered that servermgrd is based on Apache, and I discovered where all it's files live. I've also discovered how to enable the debug menu in Server Admin.
If I try to access the "servermgr_info" command that I am seeing errors from in my servermgrderrorlog file via the command line (using sudo, so it executes as root, just as it should through servermgrd) then it works just fine with no complaints about access. The PasswordServer logs seem to imply that access gets granted when I run up Server Admin.
This seems to point towards servermgrd going wrong somehow and deciding for itself that access cannot be granted. Its configuration had not been changed in any way. Since these errors started all I have done to it has been to increase the logging, which had no effect.
The error message I get from Server Admin is as follows:
The login information is incomplete for this server or is not valid.
One or more services failed to accept the login information you provided for <myserver>. Check the Name and Password and try to log on again or contact your network administrator.
The error in the servermgrderrorlog file on a connection attempt is as I gave in my first message.
Curiously Server Monitor, which also uses servermgrd, is functioning perfectly, with apparently no authentication problems.
I've been very happy with my XServe until this problem came up. Just at the wrong time too - I'm about to expand our infrastructure, and suddenly my Mac server has become harder to administer than my Linux servers. Not very impressive, and the support I'm getting at the moment is far worse than I can get for Linux. Adding new XServe's had been my favoured option, but Linux's star is rising here at the momment.

  • Getting Server Admin to connect over SSL

According to the help provided with Server Admin:
"By default, Server Admin treats all communications with remote servers as encrypted
using SSL. This uses a self-signed 128-bit certificate installed in /etc/servermgrd/ssl.crt
when you install the server. Communications use HTTPS (port 311). If this option isn’t
possible, HTTP (port 687) is used and clear text is sent between Server Admin and the
    remote server."
How do I know that Server Admin is connecting using SSL. I have port 311 open on my router and the server firewall, but when I connect to the server using the localhost name of the server, it saves the password in the keychain as "http://myserver.local".

    um... interesting
    sudo lsof -i -P
should show you that servermgr is talking, who to, and on which port.
however on my 10.5.1 server, it does not show as connected. I checked on 10.4 servers and it works as expected.

  • Server Admin not connecting to Leopard Server when accessing via VPN

    Hi everyone,
Recently, as the title suggests, Server Admin (or Server Preferences, for that matter) would not connect to my remote server via VPN. I'm quite sure that the server is working nicely, as the users (both of them lovely young ladies with considerable charms, which makes on-site support quite interesting, if distracting) didn't call me to complain, and I can login via SSH with no problems.
The server is a Mac Mini, connected to an Airport Extreme (gigabit N), which in turn connects to our ADSL modem, if that helps any.
Now, I did tinker around a bit with the settings before this happened, so I think it's probably my fault (well, I started my "career" of administering this server a week ago, what do you expect), so I suppose I may have inadvertently limited access to a service required for Server Admin and Server Preferences to function.
If anyone could tell me which services are absolutely necessary for Server Admin to function, or at least where to start looking, I'd be immensely grateful. I didn't yet go on site to try and wrestle the whole thing from there, as the travel costs are non-trivial, so I'd rather do it remotely, if at all possible.

This is exactly the difficulty I am having with a 10.5.4 Intel xserve. I have established a VPN connection that connects me to my business LAN, and I know it has carried out the connection because there are a number of things I can access properly that are not available on the public internet. For instance, my LOM ports are restricted to my business LAN, and when I connect to the server via VPN I can access teh LOM ports and using server monitor. However, when I try to use Server Admin, nothing works. It won't connect. I too am confused. All traffic to the xserve is allowed via the business LAN. I thought all traffic was supposed to be routed to the VPN server when connected via a VPN. If this is the case, shouldn't Server Admin work? When I go on site and connect my computer directly to the business LAN, I have no difficulty using Server Admin.

  • VPN Connection Windows 8,1 Error

    Hello,
I 'm trying to connect using VPN connection, but always return an error: "A request to
send or receive data was disallowed because the socket is not connected and on a (when sending on a datagram socket using a send to call) no address was supplied"
All my colleagues are able to connect less myself, we already sow all the configurations and seams there
all the same, and obviously we are missing something.
    I have the windows 8.1
    Thanks

    Elsa Susana,
Normally you’ll see the error when an incorrect network address or port is specified.
If you haven’t already, try pinging the remote host.  If it doesn’t respond, verify your connection information again to make sure you have the correct network address and network port entered.
Another possible cause is that you have the remote host blocked by your firewall or other security software, so make sure you check those as well.
More information on your error can also be found on
    this MSDN page.
    Hope this helps!

  • Server Admin - 10 Connections or Unlimited?

    I'm helping a client re-initialize a 10.4 G5 Server.
They obviously need more than 10 concurrent connections, so I ask what type of license they have (max of 10 or unlimited). They have the registration code, but are not really sure if it's unlimited or not.
I go into Server Admin and check the Settings tab for the server. Sure enough, there's the registration code (the same as they provided me) and beneath it states: Unlimited Connections. Never expires.
So, I take the box to my site, nuke it, reinitialize it. When I enter the registration code, it says: 10 Client license. Never expires.
    So, which is it?

in all of my G5 licenses, the third set of characters is always 010 for 10 client licenses, and 000 for unlimiteds.
    eg. XXXX-XXX-010-... for a 10 and XXXX-XXX-000-... for unlimited.
I've noticed that the server needs to be rebooted for the change to take place, even though the Server Admin may report the correct number of allowed clients.

  • Server Admin is not showing all users in "Show Users

I've discovered that a previous upgrade from Tiger to Leopard in 2009 has lead to newer users not be displayed Server Admin 'Show Users and Groups'.  New groups display fine.
We upgraded again to Snow Leopard a couple of months back and so are running the latest admin tools.
I really can't pick why these accounts aren't showing so any points would be appreciated.
    Thanks.

After numerous reinstalls failed to solve this problem, I discovered that on my system, it has to do with using an external monitor (via DVI port). When I drag the Firefox window from my laptop screen to an external monitor, "Show All Bookmarks" is suddenly empty. Dragging the browser window back to the original display (laptop) does NOT fix it. Firefox must be RESTARTED on the original display. When Firefox re-opens, "Show All Bookmarks" functions normally again.
WORK AROUND: the only way I can view "Show All Bookmarks" on my external monitor is to first open both the browser and "Show All Bookmarks" windows on the original display, drag BOTH windows to the other monitor and be sure to leave the "Show All Bookmarks" library window open in the background. If I forget and close it by accident, the problem happens all over again.

  • Server Admin keeps overwriting my manual DNS entries

    Hi,
In Lion's DNS server I need to create PTR records for which my DNS server doesn't hold the corresponding forward lookup (I'm on a large .edu network).  I can't find a way to do this in Server Admin as it won't let you manually enter a reverse record, and creating the forward record to create the reverse automatically appends my sub-domain to the address (these names, which point to addresses on subnets I manage, are in a different sub-domain).  I really just need a working reverse lookup and don't want the forward lookup.  I tried creating the records manually in the reverse zone files and they work for a while, but whenever I go into Server Admin for day to day maintenance (or seemingly at random even when I don't), my manually entered records get erased.  Has anyone out there found a way to make this work?
    Thanks

    Hi
"Has anyone out there found a way to make this work?"
Yes. Once you make manual changes to the config files themselves you wave bye bye to Server Admin. Basically stick with the command line when dealing with Services that have been manually configured. It's well known Server Admin has always 'behaved' this way since at least 10.3.

  • Can't establish VPN on windows client to OSX server

    Hi everyone,
I'm stuck for a while now with a very annoying problem.
I can't establish a VPN connection on a windows client to a OSX Server. It worked fine while we had OSX server 10.6.
We recently updated to 10.8 and got this problem.
I know some of u are now thinking, the solution is: Just don't use windows... But the director of the company i am doing this for
doesn't want to switch to mac.
Also, this problem maybe be related to windows but i hope someone here can help me.
    Things i've done:
    I've tried PPTP ( didn't work either )
    I've tried different users
I've tried adding a rule te regedit in windows ( according to a windows vista kb file for VPN trough NAT devices )
    I've tried different authentication rules
In VPN log is Server admin everything goes well until:
    pppd[87435]: fatal signal 6
vpnd[104]: --> Client with address 192.168.0.24 has hungup
after this it goes further with some successes.
I hope someone here knows the solution!
    Thanks in advance,

  • Server Admin slow to connect to server

Server Admin 10.6.8 client seems slow to connect to new Xserve 10.6.8 installation. Client connects via gigabit ethernet from a Mac 2gig workstation. Our Tiger file server is almost instant to connect using both Server Admin and WGM. All software is current. Server is identified by corp DNS services. Hostname is verified. ARD 3.51 is quick to connect from same client workstation. Could it be just due to Kerberized authentication? Any thoughts?
    Thanks in advance

    Probably DNS services.
To verify local DNS, launch Terminal.app and issue the following command:
    sudo changeip -checkhostname
You'll need to enter your administrative password for the sudo command.
That command will output information indicating your DNS is correct or not, and that changes are required or not.
If DNS changes are required, then you'll need to review your DNS services settings for validity, or (if you don't have DNS services operational on your LAN) here is a description of setting up the local DNS server.
You cannot use your ISP DNS on your LAN, if you're configured behind a firewall and using NAT at the firewall.

  • Server admin could not connect to localhost

    Hi,
the Problem I have is that I could not connect to the server at localhost. Server admin shows connection error.
Maybe it is a problem with my certificate state. I have deleted the default one and have to recertificate my own one.
    Any ideas?

Others have posted in the past that the SA or WGM has 'issues' when the default cert is blown away.
Have you considered doing a clean install on another volume, then move the default from that install back into your current one? Just an idea before I've had my first coffee.

  • Server Admin's proxy configuration... whacked? (Doesn't seem to work)

I just upgraded to Apache2 so that I could, sensibly, use the Server Admin app to manage all my web sites. Previously, my various httpd conf files were too complicated and I had resorted to hand coding them.
The good news is Server Admin and Apache2 are much closer to functional.
One bit of bad news: I can't get the reverse proxies to work consistently. Once set up, I get the most peculiar mix of success and failure -- almost at random. For example, some URIs load; others don't; sometimes a page loads, but it's style sheet doesn't.
What I want is simply this:
    */confluence (proxy to) localhost:8081/confluence
Using hand-edited config files, I'd usually do something along these lines (and this works great, by the way, if I stick it into 0000any_80www.mydomain.com.conf:
    ProxyRequests Off
    ProxyPassReverse /confluence http://localhost:8081/confluence
    ProxyPass /confluence http://localhost:8081/confluence
So, off to Server Admin to make this work. I tried checking "Enable Reverse Proxy" and specifying a Proxy Path of "/confluence" and a Worker URL of http://localhost:8081/confluence. This ended up created the following entry in my 0000_...conf file:
    <IfModule modproxybalancer.c>
    ProxyPass /confluence balancer://balancer-group/
    ProxyPassReverse /confluence balancer://balancer-group/
    <Proxy "balancer://balancer-group">
    BalancerMember http://localhost:8081/confluence
    </Proxy>
    </IfModule>
I wasn't able to figure out what a Sticky Session Identifier, Route or Load Factor would be used for... so I left those blank. Perhaps that's why it's not working... sure would be nice if there was some help in Server Admin...
Hm. Anyhow, Ok, looks alright. I'm not totally sure about the balancer bits (like why they are there), but I don't see why it wouldn't work. But... IT DOES NOT. I get totally inconsistent results. Some pages load, some don't. Sometimes I get some page assets, while others don't come through. Bah. However, if I get rid of the above, and simply put this in:
    ProxyRequests Off
    ProxyPassReverse /confluence http://localhost:8081/confluence
    ProxyPass /confluence http://localhost:8081/confluence
It works great. Only problem is, anytime I edit a server configuration, Server Admin goes and deletes those lines! I think I've found a way around it though. I put the above lines into a "0000.proxy" file (in /etc/apache2/sites/0000.proxy) and now I've added this line:
    Include "/etc/apache2/sites/0000.proxy"
At the bottom of my 0000_...conf file. So far, Server Admin hasn't deleted that line... and it seems to be working.
BUT, I'd just LOVE it if someone could tell me how to make this work without hacking around in the command line! Very annoying -- and of course, my proxies are showing up in Server Admin, and I really wish that would work.

    Hi there
For the benefit of anyone looking at this thread, what is meant here is that if you choose to open the help for RoboHelp, you have an abiliity to add a comment. That comment may be kept private or shared with others. If you elect to share it with others, it is generally added as a comment into the pages that provide the help. If approved, Adobe may amend the help topic to reflect the new information.
@Jared - Was that information missing in your file? I thought when you elected to use this file that it was automatically populated with all available settings. And unfortunately (IMNSHO) the settings don't immediately reflect the settings in the dialog. (I think they should, as a starting point. At least, that's the behavior *I* expected the first time I played with the feature. I was admittedly taken aback when it didn't work that way.)
Assuming the setting was missing, how did you manage to sort what setting should be added?
    Cheers... Rick

  • New to server, need VPN for remote desktop and file share...

I've set up server and have the VPN working, I think, I need to have several outside systems join the servers VPN permanently to allow for file sharing and remote desktop. I don't want the "normal" internet browsing to go through the VPN (huge slow down) I have read that a "split DNS" or "split tunnel" is what I need, then to disable "send all traffic over VPN connection" option on each remote system. I was a little confused after reading on how to do this on Leopard server (the only instructions I found) but have absolutely no idea on how to do this on Snow Leopard server (the server I set up is 10.6) any assistance would be great, thanks in advance.

Server Admin, VPN, Settings, Client Information, Network Routing Definition.
Here add a private network record type that matches your LAN/VPN ip.
    For example
    IP Address: 192.168.0.0
    Mask: 255.255.255.0
    Type: Private
You can find more informations about this feature in Snow Leopard Server documentation:

  • Can I enable "Use default gateway on remote network" on VPN connection using Group Policy?

    Hi,
First timer here so please bear with me!
Environment: Domain Windows 2003, Clients: Windows 7 and Windows XP (with Client Side Extensions pushed out)
When creating a VPN connection on a client machine manually with default settings the "Use default gateway on remote network" found in [Connection Properties - Networking - IPv4 - Advanced] is enabled, which is good as we don't allow split-tunneling.
I have a test GPO that creates a new VPN Connection [Computer Config - Preferences - Control Panel - Network Options], but the above setting is unticked.
Am I missing something on the options for the GP preference to set this automtically?
I can write a script to directly change the C:\Users\All Users\Microsoft\Network\Connections\Pbk\rasphone.pbk file but would prefer if I could sort it all out using Group Policy.
Any help would be greatly appreciated!
    Thanks a lot!
    David

    Shane,
There is actually a way to set the "Use default gateway on remote network" through Group Policy Preferences. And this may even be a better way to do it, because you may change this flag without touching any other settings, or other VPN connections.
(All VPN connections are stored in the same .pbk file.)
Here's the trick: Opening the .pbk file in notepad, I realized that this is actually an oldstyle ini-structured file. And Group Policy Preferences can update ini files! In the .pbk file the section names are the VPN connections names, like [My VPN],
and the property IpPrioritizeRemote is the flag "Use default gateway on remote network".
So, in Group Policy Management Editor, go to Preferences / Windows Settings / Ini Files.
Create a new object with Action = Update, and File Path =
    C:\ProgramData\Microsoft\Network\Connections\pbk\rasphone.pbk
(If this is where your file is located, I guess it is in c:\users if the VPN connection is made for a single user.)
Section Name should be the display name of your VPN connection, without the brackets.
    Property Name = IpPrioritizeRemote
    Property Value = 1
    Peter, www.skov.com, Denmark
    Peter :-)
This is great, but just one question. I also want to append a list of DNS Sufixes in order (when viewing a VPN properties, this is buried in
"Networking --> IPv4/6 --> Advanced --> DNS --> Append these DNS Suffixes (in order)". However, for the VPNs I have manually created with this list populated, I can't see any entries in the rasphone.pbk. Does anyone know
    where these are stored?
    Cheers.

  • VPN connection will not work

despite opening up, 500,4500,1701 and 1723 on both my mac and the server, I cannot create a connection via l2tp or pptp.
With L2TP, it stays for ages until it times out, on the server nothing happens, nothing comes up in the log, as if a connection hasn't been attempted.
I use the same shared key and have entered the relevant information in server admin.

    Thatnks for your update.
I'd suggest trying this VPN on another computer, possibly from your location, possibly from a different place.
Make sure that the VPN is configured properly at the host location that you're trying to reach.
Is there an admin at the hosting location who can check your setup?

I have tried deleting the preferences file for Server Admin, I have tried replacing the servermgr_smb script in the cgi-bin folder, I have tried replacing the servermgr_smb bundle... I'm not sure where else to try and I haven't found much pertaining to this topic. Does anyone have any suggestions as to how to fix? Any help is appreciated.

I looked at the logs again and am still getting these same error messages:
Oct 16 15:30:14 web /usr/share/servermgrd/cgi-bin/servermgr_smb: [16259-a000b2a4] SIGALRM: process timed out
Oct 16 15:35:14 web /usr/share/servermgrd/cgi-bin/servermgr_smb: [16372-a000b2a4] SIGALRM: process timed out
Oct 16 15:40:14 web /usr/share/servermgrd/cgi-bin/servermgr_smb: [16995-a000b2a4] SIGALRM: process timed out
I'm also finding these errors in my servermgrd_error.log files:
[Sun Oct 15 20:37:06 2006] [error] [client 66.243.213.30] script not found or unable to stat: /usr/share/servermgrd/cgi-bin/servermgr_p69
[Sun Oct 15 20:37:06 2006] [error] [client 66.243.213.30] script not found or unable to stat: /usr/share/servermgrd/cgi-bin/servermgr_p69
[Sun Oct 15 20:37:07 2006] [error] [client 66.243.213.30] script not found or unable to stat: /usr/share/servermgrd/cgi-bin/servermgr_p69
Does anyone have any suggestions of where to start looking?
