Server not contacted on Port 587

Hello--This problem relates to the update of 10.4.7. Mail just fine before, repaired permissions before and after update. Used Mail and was not able to first send, error message (could not contact server on Port 25. Came to this forum and saw topics on possible problem with 10.4.7 update. Repaired permissions, reinstalled combo update, repaired permissions again, and now was able to receive email but could not send, was now getting error message that server could not be contacted on port 587. Have tried most of the solutions talked about here. Socks proxy off, moving Mail folder from Home Library to desktop, trashing plist. etc. We are able to send and receive mail using Netscape and my wife's school server. So the problem lies somewhere with Mail. Any new ideas on this problem with port 587. We count on Mail very much and getting it up and running would be great. Thanks for the help.
John

Sorry, This problem is with the iBook, have held off for the moment on updating the iMac.

  • "server not found on port 110" ????

i'll be typing emails and suddenly the mail icon will start bouncing and the pop up window says 'server not found on port 110'. what does this mean?
(((i have taken my laptop into a MAC store for diagnostic test, and all is fine. i got a new cable, that didn't help either. i called my internet provider and all is fine there.)))
any suggestions? do i have some ncorrect settings somewhere?

Not sure what would cause that but two options would be:
First try restarting the computer. Sometimes things just need to be refreshed.
    Second:
Safari's internet connection benefits from adding DNS server codes to your Network settings. To do so, go to the Apple Menu>System Preferences. Open the Network panel. Select your connection, then select "advanced". Select the DNS panel. Enter the following codes: 208.67.222.220 and 208.67.220.222. Select "OK", then "apply".
    Restart Safari.
    Hope this helps!

  • SMTP does not start on port 587

I just activated IMAP and SMTP on an old G5 Server running the latest version of Leopard.
Everything, but for one thing, runs fine.  IMAP works correctly from both the local network and any distant network I could try it.  SMTP runs fine on the local network but only on port 25.  Nothing is listening on port 587, or 465.  Hence, SMTP does not work from a distant network.
The firewall is off, but even from the localhost, or any machine for that matter, telneting to port 587 does not get an answer :
    telnet 127.0.0.1 587
    Trying 127.0.0.1...
telnet: connect to address 127.0.0.1: Connection refused
telnet: Unable to connect to remote host
I did activate ssl for smtp in the Advance>Security tab.  It uses the same selfsigned certificate as IMAP, which works fine.  I can also tunnel in from a distant machine and SMTP will work.
I tried to uncomment the following four lines in master.cf
    #smtps     inet  n       -       n       -       -       smtpd
    #  -o smtpd_tls_wrappermode=yes
    #  -o smtpd_sasl_auth_enable=yes
    #  -o smtpd_client_restrictions=permit_sasl_authenticated,reject
but I only lost connection on port 25 and got nothing on port 587.  This feels good, but I have no idea where to go from here.
Any one has any suggestion ?

I understand well that this is exactly SMTP, but just running on a different port, port 587, for submission, while port 25 is for relaying between server
That's pretty much it, except that port 587 should be configured to accept mail from authenticated users only (as determined by the line:
      -o smtpd_client_restrictions=permit_sasl_authenticated,reject
This enables authenticated users (e.g. users who have accounts on the server) to send mail through the server without restriction (e.g. they can be remote) while unauthenticated users (including remote mail servers sending mail to your domain) use the standard port 25
should I uncomment the lines for smtps in order to use SSL ?
smtps is still different from SMTP (25) and submission (587). Both SMTP and Submission can use SSL if you enable tls support - tls enables a connection to start off insecure/unencrypted and switch to encrypted if both the client and server acknowledge they support it. It's generally not recommended to require SSL/TLS unless you're sure every client that's going to use that service can support (and is configured to use) encryption.
smtps (which requires SSL) is now deprecated in favor of TLS (which allows the server to support both encrypted and unencrypted connections on the same port number).

  • SQLCE Agent Replication Problem, maybe related to SQL Server not on default port

I've got a problem getting the SQL Server CE Replication setup on a new server. SQL Server is 2008 R2 but we are running on a non-standard port (not 1433) and I'm not sure where I'd tell the agent that or if I need to. I've turned on full diagnostics and
set the Level to 3.  Using the diag option on the agent, I can see that is set.
In the log file, I get this error: Hr=80004005 ERR:OpenDB failed getting pub version 28627 (rest of log is below)
    when I try to sync
and the client gets: : 0x80004005

     Minor Err.: 29061
I am pretty certain that the user name / password are correct and I can connect as that user in SQL Server Management Studio. I don't see anything in the SQL Server log file for a failed connection. I do so those if I login through the Management Studio
without entering the password for example so I believe that is setup.  The Agent is on the same machine as the database server so I don't believe it is a firewall or network error but this is a new machine / setup so I may be missing something in the
    setup.
I am not sure exactly what else to look at to try to understand what is going on.

Thanks - that got me past that issue - I was passing the wrong database as the Publisher due to a configuration error (we are bringing up a new publication server and missed changing one of the parameters in a configuration file). I've now got another
error but if I can't determine what is wrong with that I'll post a different question.

  • BEFW11S4 limited connectivity DHCP server not contacted

We have a network that has been running fine until a couple of days ago. We have changed no settings, yet now some of our wireless computers get the limited or no connectivity error. They are failing when trying to get the IP address assigned.
We're running 128 bit WEP encryption. My desktop machine which is hardwired to the router is fine, a hardwired network printer adapter is fine, and oddly enough two machines running Vista with a wireless connection are fine. It's my laptop, and a couple of my kid's laptops, all runnning XP Pro SP2, that are having problems.
I've tried ipconfig /release and /renew. The /renew times out, unable to contact the DHCP server.
I also tried the EasyLink Advisor software on my laptop. t tells me I need a wired connection.
One other piece of information; occassionally one of my sons have said they could not connect to the internet (on on of the XP machines) and I have powered the BEFW11S4 off an on, and then they were able to connect. I've never had this problem my laptop. But that's not working for anyone now.
I am at a loss as to why a network configuration that has been working perfectly well for over a month would selectively stop talking to computers with a certain operating system. Unless Microsoft has pushed an XP update recently that might have broken things?

have you tried upgrading / reflashing router's firmware .. if not , try it..after the upgrade , reset and reconfigure the router..check whether it makes any difference..

  • Comcast Port 587 Not Working

Comcast contacted me to change to port 587 because my account was sending spam. I've done this and can't send or receive email. I've restarted mail, my computer, I've checked and unchecked SSL. I've contacted Comcast and they say it's a Mac issue. I'm clearly doing something wrong, I just can't figure out what it is. I get mail on my iPhone using 587, but not my iMac. If it were possible to cut and paste on the iPhone, I wouldn't care, but need the iMac for document creation and response.
Anyone know what little thing I'm not doing that could fix this problem?

I recieved a similar email from Comcast saying "Comcast has determined that your computer(s) have been used to send unsolicited email ("spam"), which is generally an indicator of a virus."
I have no idea why I recieved this (waiting for a representative from Comcast Customer Security Assurance to call me back), but I'm sure it's related to the port change from 25 to 587.
Now I've been using port 465 for secure SMTP connections for... years probably. However, the configuration for server authentication seems to have changed.
The solution was to change the username under authentication from "userxyz" to "[email protected]". (I use my primary Comcast username, in case that makes a difference.)
The best part was when I called Comcast and they told me I had to call Apple for help configuring the Mail.app client. Yeah, it's their problem.

  • Port 25 works fine for SSL/SMTP, but not port 587?

So after doing a rather painful migration to new hardware to support 10.5 from a previously working 10.4 config...
I got SSL working -- web service is fine, mail service is fine for all ports for POP and IMAP...but not port 587.
    - It's open on my firewall
    - There's no software firewall impeding it
    - Trying to telnet to port 587 results in nothing
It's as if the server isn't even listening to the port...
    And the odd part?
    - Mac OS X desktop clients report they can't connect on 587. Changing the port to 25 and leaving everything else the same (auth type, username, password) -- suddenly it works...BUT
    - The iPhone is configured for port 587 and works every time.
My guess it that iPhone auto falls back to port 25 if all else fails, I can't explain why it would work. Bigger question, I suspect something got munged in the migration...is it possible it needs to be told to listen on 587 as well?

I saw that site...it mentions adding port 587 specifically -- or commenting out "the appropriate lines of master.cf"
I assume that means to uncomment out the submission port in that file -- or would it be better to add 587 specifically?
Also, I never allow unauth SMTP (even inside my network) -- I would want to continue to impose that on the submission port and the normal port 25; how do I do this?
Thanks in advance for the help.

  • Admin Server client not contacting server its running on

    Hi All,
I've got an OS X server that for some reason ( probably due to me pratting around) has decided not to have a working server admin prog. I can fire up the client program and point it at any of the IP addresses that the server is listening on and then you get an error message basically saying that the server admin daemon is not contactable.
an ls -lrt in /var/log to see if anything shows up gives me
Jul 31 07:57:38 britten com.apple.SecurityServer[77]: Succeeded authorizing right com.apple.server.admin.streaming by client /usr/sbin/QuickTimeStreamingServer for authorization created by /System/Library/CoreServices/ServerManagerDaemon.bundle.
    in secure.log
and Jul 31 07:58:46 [152] kCGErrorIllegalArgument: _CGXCacheMergeShmem: Invalid mergeShmemID (461)
in windowserver.log ... but that keeps happening
I'm running osx server 10.5.7 and my server admin prog is 10.5.3(2789.1.1)
    So ...
1). How can i find out if the back end daemon is running
2). what port(s) does it listen on
3). How can I turn on some logging to see what's happening when I run serve admin
4). Any other tips as to how to find out why its not working
    Rgds
    Alex

Just as an update, I tried upgrading the server admin tools to 10.5.7 to match the OS release. Although the install seemed to work i.e. I receive an install completed successfully message " when i click on the "About Server Admin" I still see the version number as 10.5.3 I've tried this under my account which has admin rights and form the root user, both with the same result.
Looking in the Server Admin directroy, i can see the timestamps associated with some directories have changed while other things haven't. Could I be running bits of 10.5.3 and bits of 10.5.7?

  • Server Cannot Be Contacted on Port 143

I am trying to send a message from Mail on the same computer as the OS X Server. How can it not contact itself? The message I get is:
"Unable to Connect - There may be a problem with the mail server or network. Check the settings for the account 'wbe-pii IMAP Server' or try again. The server error encountered was: The server 'mail.wbe-pii.com' cannot be contacted on port 143."
    Thanks for any help.

Well, the obvious question is what does 'mail.wbe-pli.com' translate to on the machine?
Does it translate to your public IP address, in which case your traffic has to go out through your router and come back in? In addition to not being ideal, that's also not supported by a number of different routers (they can't handle NAT traffic coming back in from the private network).
In most cases the solution is to setup internal DNS so that your hostname maps to the internal address of your server, not the external one.
In this case, though, you could also configure Mail.app to use 'localhost' for the mail server, rather than 'mail.wbe-pli.com'. That will enable it to talk to the server running on the local system.

    Hi
I have intsalled the plumtree portal.... The links are working. But when i search any word then it gives following error messages
"Error executing search on Plumtree Corporate Portal : Could not contact the Search Server."
Please let me know what could be the solution to above problem
    Thanks

Santosh,It appears that your portal server can not connect to the Search Server.1) Check to ensure that the "Plumtree Portal Search Server" NT Service is running. It will be an NT service. If you check the PlumtreePortal_v5-0.properties file you should see two entries for where you installed the Search service.SEARCH_SERVER_HOST=servernameSEARCH_SERVER_PORT=15244
    2) If the service is not started, then start it...
    3) You can test connectivity to the Search Server by telnetting to server in question at port 15244 (or whatever port you installed the search service on). If you get a response from Ignite, then the search server is up..

  • Smtp port 587 not working

after upgrading from 10.5.2 to 10.5.4 we are no longer able to use port 587 for smtp... only port 25 no SSL works.

however not sure if that is really related - as we are only using SSL certificates not requiring... so presumably smtp should still work?
    any help appreciated.

btw. if we do a telnet test, it first establishes a connection but then we get the following instantly:
    "Connection closed by foreign host."
also checked that the firewall is configured correctly and lets traffic on port 587 in...

  • ITunes could not contact the iPhone software update server because you are not connected to the internet...???

    Ok I’m completely lost here....
I’m running Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition Service Pack 3 (Build 2600), I updated iTunes to 11.0.2.25 and some other updates for windows last night on my laptop. I try connecting to download the iOS 6.1.2 update for my iPhone 4 and my iPhone 5 via iTunes. I am getting this message for both "iTunes could not contact the iPhone software update server because you are not connected to the internet. Make sure your internet connection is active and try again." Everything was fine with connecting prior to running these updates because I downloaded the 6.1 update with no problems when it came out.
What I have done so far with which has made no difference:
    Checked my internet connection
    Changed my internet connection
Signed out of iTunes and then signed back in
Ran diagnostics via iTunes, comes back with: Network interfaces verified- Internet connection failed- Secure link to iTunes store verified
Connection attempt to Apple web site was successful.
Connection attempt to browsing iTunes Store was successful.
Connection attempt to purchasing from iTunes Store was successful.
Connection attempt to iPhone activation server was successful.
Connection attempt to firmware update server was successful.
Connection attempt to Gracenote server was successful.
Last successful iTunes Store access was 2013-02-20 20:40:48.
Disabled firewall, spy sweeper, virus scanner
    start>run>cmd> typed "netsh winsock reset"
    Rebooted
Checked the parental controls in iTunes
    Start>control panel>internet options>connections tab> lan settings> selected the "automatically detect settings"
    Deleted iTunes and reinstalled iTunes
When I would "ping gs.apple.com" it would come back with "request timed out" no matter what internet connection I was on, so I went into the hosts file  start>my computer>(C:)>WINDOWS>system32>drivers>ect>HOSTS and added  "#     127.0.0.1     gs.apple.com". Now it will ping gs.apple.com just fine but still comes up with the "iTunes could not contact the iPhone software update server because you are not connected to the internet" message in iTunes when i try to download the update.
If anyone can come up with any ideas that I haven’t tried, please let me know. This is keeping me back from updating both of my phones along with if anything should ever happen to them; restores as well.

im computer is connected i can go to the apple store through itunes but when i plug my phone in i keep getting that alert... i plugged my phone in to update it after the apple loaded the itunes icon and a usb showed up.
