Servlets only running, not compileing

Recently installed Tomcat on an old Win ME machine.
The pre compiled servlet are running fine. However I am not able to compile any new ones.
Anyone know what might be wrong?
Thanks
Andreas

Apache Tomcat/4.1.24thanks
AndreasThat is not trying to compile. That is trying to access. You must compile a servlet like you would a normal java class, using the javac or an ide.
If you do not know how to do this, I suggest reading this: http://java.sun.com/docs/books/tutorial/index.html

• How to run and compile a java servlet on Tomcat?

Hi, I am very new to servlets in Tomact.
I went to the java tutorial and from the address below I copy an example (SimpleServlet).I try to run and compile it in Tomcat, But I don't know how can I do that. I appreciate if somebody tell me the command line for compiling and running this example and the necassary steps. (My Tomcat is installed perfactly).
http://java.sun.com/docs/books/tutorial/servlets/overview/simple.html
Thankx

Hello,
I have the similar question.
Instead of going thru sun's tutorial, I tried onjava's ("http://www.onjava.com/pub/a/onjava/2001/04/19/tomcat.html?page=1").
I could see the jsp page, but when I tried to add a servlet, I got an error "Page not found". I followed exactly the same way they describe. The only thing I noticed was the resulting page on the tutorial had the URL of ".../servlet/...".
Is this "servlet" directory something we are supposed to create our own? If so, under what directory? Or do we need to set up anything in order for the servlet to be referenced that way?
Thanks in advance.

• TagHandlers run in compile-time invocations. Is it only once?

""TagHandlers run in compile-time invocations and ComponentHandlers run in JSF invocations""
I the above statement of compile time mean what?. Is it only run once at the first time?
Is it mean it will parse all the tag in jsp and change it to servlet ?
It is because i want to write a tag that is run only once to read the hibernate annotation(length,nullable) to set it to input text.
Any comment?

Sure,
/* Java has a platform-inderpendent preferences database, so in MS Windows this would be the registry.
The preferences db works in a tree (like the registry) and has two main branches, USER and SYSTEM. Then a branch for each class.
java.util.prefs.Preferences prefs =
java.util.prefs.Preferences.userNodeForPackage(MyBaseClass.class);
// The line above creates a prefrences object (a handle on the system DB
// for only MyBaseClass's branch within the users section.
String folder = prefs.get("defaultFolder");
// the Preferences.get object takes an Object and returns either
// the object assiosated with it, or null.
// For more info on this take a look at Hashtables.
if(folder == null) {
folder = getFolder(); // say using JFilePanel
/* now we need to store the the data, to do this we use put, this is
then automaticly saved. */
prefs.put("defaultFolder", folder);
}Hope that helps, mlk

Because of a problem, I uninstalled Firefox once, reinstalled it and it ran. I had a problem so I uninstalled/reinstalled it again. Now it will not run. I get an error message saying that firefox is running and you can only run one at a time. I have uninstalled multiple times and can't figure out what is running. The is only one Firefox installed and it is not open. What does this mean and how do I fix it?

If you use ZoneAlarm Extreme Security then try to disable Virtualization.

In Snow Leopard you update Java from Software Update (in the Apple menu). You can check your version by opening Terminal and typing
java -version
(don't get creative and type anything else)
The latest version is 1.6.0_65.

• I can not run or compile java programme

I am first time java programmer I can not run or compile any java programme.
(can not read
1 error) this is the the message that I am getting from my dos

http://java.sun.com/docs/books/tutorial/getStarted/cupojava/index.html
Try the tutorial.
It sounds like your error message comes from compiling. For example, "javac mysourcecode.java" If that is correct, the most common trouble comes from using a program like Notepad on Windows to create the soruce code. The tutorial will walk your through it.

• How can i know the servlet is running or not?

Hi all,
I have a doubt regarding servlet. I created one servlet and deployed in server. Now i called (RUN) the servlet from the browser. And it is running. Now can i know that the servlet is running or not in the server without seeing in the browser. Can we know the status of the servlet with its URL in the server whether it is running or not?
Let me explain my problem. In my servlet it will run continously read one table and do some operation depending on the entries in that table. Now i called the servlet from the browser. After some time i closed the browser. If browser is there i can know whether servlet is running or not. But now how can i know that servlet is running or not. Becoz eventhough we closed the browser the servlet will run in the background. How can i achieve this?
Thanks and Regards,
VJR.

Hi!
With first call, the servlet will be loaded, and it remains so until server-shutdown, but you need a timer-mechanism execute method calls continuously.
Regards,
Thomas

Thanks anyhow;
The following information is sent to beginners site.
I have talked to british, belgian and others regarding this problem. They said it is very expensive and we laughed.
Hi,
Windows XP runs java application but does not compile it. I get following message:
'javac' is not recognized as an internal or external command, operatable program or batch file.
MS-DOS does not exists but a command line edits autoexec.nt having allinformation regarding installed jdk5. I run my java applicat
ion from here. But no compilation.
Environment variables has following information.
JAVA_HOME C:\jdk5.0
CLASSPATH C:\jdk5.0\myPrograms

• Java will run but not compile

I have had to format my computer and i re-installed java 1.5 and set up the system variables, but when i tried to compile some code it cannot find javac
i have already compiled it before so i run the compiled code and it worked fine, it found java.exe
the problem might be that when i tyyped the JAVA_HOME variable i accidentally typed it in with a space before it, but i got rid of that, but it still doesn't work. I have put i%JAVA_HOME% in the PATH, sp i dont know whats wrong with it. I've installed java quite a few times, and i'm sure i've set the variables up properly,.
Any ideas?

Thanks for your replies.
The javac.exe does exist, its in the right places, i can compile if i type:
"c:\program files\java\jdk1.5.0\bin\javac!" Word.java
but typing
javac Word.java
doesn't work, so i think i'm right in thinkin this is a problem with the system variables.
But the variables are exactly the same as on my mates computer, which works.
I tried putting %JAVA_HOME%\bin\ in the path, but no luck, so i put it bac to just %JAVA_HOME%, still no luck.
My variables are:
JAVA_HOME - C:\Program Files\Java\jdk1.5.0\bin
PATH - all the stuuf already there + ;%JAVA_HOME%
I've got microsoft visual studio installed thats got some environmental variables set up , one called path, would that be interferring?
Also, when i first put in the JAVA_HOME is set it to " C:\Program Files\Java\jdk1.5.0\bin" with a space before it, but it aint worked even after i changed it..
I can remember having the same problem on my old computer, after i upgraded to 1.5 from 1.4, when i changed the JAVA_HOME variable, it didn't work.
thanks

After fighting with this for a while, I tried the following:
1) Copy code from a known-working example into the existing web app
2) Copy the code for the component et al into the known working example app
results:
1) Known working component generates the same compilation errors
2) everything work correctly
I have compared the tlds and faces-config.xml files and everything appears to be correct. In both cases, the faces-config.xml files are at version 1.2 and the tlds are at version 2.1
The only difference i can see is that the not-working web app uses far more libraries than the working example, though i'm not sure why this would be a problem.

Only after reimporting as IA archive and selecting the new version in operations mapping I get the error.
How is this possible? How can I debug to find the root cause for the error?

Hello,
what I have done is to add an additional <xsl:choose> to an already existing <xsl:choose> in the <xsl:otherwise> branch at several locations. Example below.
I hope that there was not typo somwhere else, however what is very strange is that XML Spy says that the XSLT is well-formed and a test transformation executes successfully too.
For that XSLT it is not such a big problem, because I can roll-back to the previous version but I am really concerned if you build a big XSLT from scratch in XML Spy an after import in PI you get a compilation error. So it would be really good to find a root cause for this.
<xsl:choose>
<xsl:when test="RET_DATE">
<xsl:attribute name="nullFlavor"><xsl:value-of select="RET_DATE"/></xsl:attribute>
</xsl:when>
<xsl:otherwise>
<xsl:choose>
<xsl:when test="RET_DATE_VALUE='00000000'">
<xsl:attribute name="nullFlavor"><xsl:text>NA</xsl:text></xsl:attribute>
</xsl:when>
<xsl:otherwise>
<xsl:attribute name="value"><xsl:value-of select="RET_DATE_VALUE"/></xsl:attribute>
</xsl:otherwise>
</xsl:choose>
</xsl:otherwise>
</xsl:choose>

• Forms 6i do not compile on Oracle 10.2.0.4

We are currently using Oracle Forms 6i (patch 18) and have recently upgraded from 10.2.0.3 to 10.2.0.4. This was done on a test environment since we are doing testing regarding the upgrade. The issue is there is just this one form that does not compile. When I hit ctrl-t, it disconnects (from oracle forms builder). I have deduced that there is this record group that is causing the disconnects. It is select from a base table (please see query below). When I remove the record group, the form compiles fine. Everything was fine on 10.2.0.3.
Since this version has been desupported for a long long time, metalink won't help. I'm hoping that someone has an idea regarding this matter. Please don't ask me why we're still using this version. Of course, it's a management thing. :)
Any help is greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.
SELECT *
FROM distribution_type_refs dtr
WHERE EXISTS (
SELECT '1'
FROM network_distributions nd
WHERE nd.distribution_type_id = dtr.distribution_type_id
AND log_number = :bl_networks.log_number
AND active_ind = 'Y' )
AND 'Y' =
CASE
WHEN :bl_networks.agreement_id IS NOT NULL
THEN dbpk_specials.fnc_agr_net_dist_valid_ind
( :bl_networks.agreement_id
, :bl_networks.log_number
, dtr.distribution_type_id
ELSE 'Y'
END
AND ( :bl_sp_decoders.ua_type_id = dbpk_constants.ua_type_internal
OR dtr.signal_definition_code =
COALESCE
dbpk_specials.fnc_decoder_signal_definition
( :bl_sp_decoders.base_unit_address
, :bl_sp_decoders.unit_address )
, DECODE ( :bl_networks.ua_count
, 1, dtr.signal_definition_code
, :bl_networks.first_signal_definition_code
, dtr.signal_definition_code
ORDER BY dtr.display_order

First thing to do is get rid of the "Select *" by changing the * to the actual column list.
That may be the only problem. However, I do recall someplace we had trouble with the order-by clause in record groups as well. Try removing it to see what happens. Try using 'Order By 1" (changing the 1 to whatever column number the display_order column is in).
And don't apologize for using Forms 6i. Many of us still use it.
By the way, using "Select *" anywhere in Forms is dangerous, since Forms runs from a compiled module, and Oracle does not automatically recompile it if the underlying objects change. So if your table on which you have written a Select * gets changed, the form will fail when it tries to do the select. Instead, ALWAYS specify the exact columns you need to select from the table.
By the way #2: If you enclose your code within
....
tags, your indentation will be preserved.
