Servo motor using parallel port

Hello,
I have a XY mirror scan Servo motor used for optical scanning experiment.
The question I have is:
I already have a program to control stepper motor via parallel port. Can I use the same to control servo motor ?
Or is the SERVO motor concept different to that of a STEPPER motor ...
Thank you

You will need a DAQ card that can generate the voltage needed to send a command signal to the 671.  The 671 will need to be tuned to the 6880 with whatever sized mirror is attached.  (If you bought the galvo and servo driver as a package it should already be tuned.)
CTI systems take in an analog command from -10 to +10 Volts.  Almost all the NI DAQ cards (and many other brands) output +/- 10 Volts so that will be easy.
Then you will need to decide how to scan your target.  A ramp pattern or triangle wave is the usual choice for scanning objects so you need to generate that in LabVIEW code along with the code that will read your sensor.  This should be done simultaneously but you really don't need a very expensive DAQ card to accomplish that.  Look on the NI website for options in your price range and do some research...
Is your system one axis (one 6880 and one 671)?  If so you will scan a raster (ramp or triangle) to measure a single line of light intensity, move the stage a tiny distance and scan another line.  When you put all the lines together into a 2D image you will have a representation of one face of your object.  Many people use a rotary stage to spin the object while scanning to assemble a 3D model of the object.  This is a bit more complex of course.

  • How can i write a vi in using parallel port for digital inputs

    Dear all,
i am a beginner user of LabVIEW and i want to write a vi in using parallel port for digital I/O. After reading the article "Using the Parallel Port in LabVIEW
" and download the parallel.zip, i know how to write the vi for output, but i still don't know how to write the input one.i've try to use a Inport.vi to test, but nothing change when i set pin2-9 to high. (my computer:win2K & LabVIEW 6.1)
Can anybody teach me how to write it?
Can anyone write the vi for me too?
    Thanks all!
    p.s.i've already install the "accessHW.exe"

Are you using VISA or the accessHW VIs? You may need to goto the bios and set the parallel port to run in spp mode or standard mode. This is the simpliest configuration and where you should start.
As far as writing the VI goes, just copy the diagram out of the tutorial you mentioned.

  • Driving stepper motor via parallel port

    Hi everybody,
I want to drive a stepper motor via the parallel port. The problem is to
create a constant frequency on a digital line of the port. I tried to do
so with a While-Loop with a certain delay, but the frequency varys due
to occurrences like mouse-movement (due to the call-ups of interrupts I
    think).
    Any Ideas?

How about a simple NE555 timer circuit to externally create the constant
frequency, then use a bit in the parallel port to enable and disable the
NE555 circuit? You could probably go to Radio Shack and pick up the
    components for less than $10.

  • Using Parallel Port with Outport.vi Problem

    Hello,
I am trying to use my parallel port to control a relay network and have run into a problem. I am using the outport instead of visa because for some reason I get an error with visa and outport seems more simple. The problem I am having is that my program doesn't seem to be able to initially take control of the port. What I mean by this is that if I restart the computer and open/run my program, I get an incorrect output on the parallel port. However, if I run one of the example programs for controlling the paralle port using outport (attached) (I believe the one I use is called Reading and writing to parallel port using loops) I am able to control the output to the parallel port. Also, after the example has run, my program works correctly. However, if I restart my computer again and run my program first it can no longer control the port correctly. So the problem seems to be that my program isn't initializing the port correctly or assessing it right at the beginning of the program. However, looking at the example program I don't really see what they are doing that I am not. I have the correct port address.
My program takes values from a text file and displays them on the port and that works correctly.

Hi Jag213, I'm glad you were able to resolve the issues you discussed on the other forum related to this issue.
Now that you have it working, I would recommend a few things:
    1. Just try modifying one of the existing examples and see what you can get away with removing in order to keep it working the first time.
    2. Try modifying the timing on your example - 10 seconds is a long time to wait between each week, I wonder if you are getting a time out? Do the examples work when you insert that kind of timing delay?
    3. Add the In Port.vi into your code - this may be related to getting your Out Port.vi to work correctly.
    4. Your code controls 8-bits on the parallel port, while the examples control 32-bits. Do all 32 bits need to be initalized? Looking at the Parellel Port Read and Write Loop.vi Example, in the IO Connector Status, the 31st bit controls whether the target is initialized.
Play with these settings and see if you can get yours to work the first. If all else fails, build your program to run off of one of the examples. For example, have the while loop run once, and then call yours as a SubVI.
    Good luck!

  • Using parallel port

Hi, i will use labview for my thesis project and i plan to input my data via parallel port.
My input data is 8 bits so i tried to use control and status lines of the parallel port.
I used the method that is described at NI`s developer zone web page which shows using control and status lines.
    http://zone.ni.com/devzone/conceptd.nsf/webmain/72c6fc6ce4ad4d1386256b1800794596?OpenDocument
By using that method i achieved to input first 4 bits of my data over status lines while there were no change at those of control lines.
Because my data that i want to input consists of 8 bits, i could only be able to manage half of it.
what can i do for using control lines?
Or as a second alternative, is there any way to input 8 bits over data register?
Below i have attached the code that i had written to input by using control and status registers.

Well, I looked at your VI and it looks like you have everything setup right. The only thing I can think of is that you are not grounding the control lines when you want to set them low.
As far as your second question is concerned some parallel ports can be bidirectional. The article that you provided explains how you can test if you parallel port is bidirectional, and gives an example on how you would read and write from the data bits.
Also, you may want to try the two parallel port shipping examples in LabVIEW. There is one that uses the data bits, and one that uses the status and control registers. You can find these examples by going to Help>>Find Examples, then search for Parallel.

  • Controlling a Servo Motor Using LabVIEW, Phidget & Mac OS

Can anyone help me with this problem?
I'm attempting to control a servo motor attached to a Phidget, using a VI in LabVIEW on a Mac. The Phidget works fine with the Mac, LabVIEW works fine with the Mac, but there seems to be a problem combining the three. The problem I'm encountering is that the examples on the Phidget website (www.phidgets.com) for LabVIEW use ActiveX. Can anyone suggest a solution for this? Is it possible to use one of the control options in LabVIEW (GPIB, VISA, etc etc.) instead?
I'm not great with computers so really have no idea where to start.
    Thanks!

Thanks for your reply Jeff! So I can insert a CIN to the block diagram, right click and use the 'create .c file' option, insert the example code for controlling the motor from the Phidgets website (after tweaking it to make it specific to my setup) and that should work? How do I load the C library? Or a better question may be, what is the C library? (I wasn't joking when I said I'm totally new to this!)
I've been working my way through 'C for Dummies' this week but I have to admit, the bit about header files and libraries lost me. I downloaded a bunch of stuff from the Phidgets website, including the phidget21.h and phidget21.lib files...do I '#include' both of these at the top of the example code?
I've been in touch with the Phidget Support team (who are indeed great!) and received a similar reply ("You would have to call into the mac Phidget21 Framework directly").
Once the CIN is all set up do you know what degree of control I'll have over the motor? The aim is to have the motor move in steps from -60deg to +60deg around a central point. Would this need to be defined in the code and then linked into LabVIEW or is this something I could control from within LabVIEW? The idea of my project is to use the motor to move a light source around a sensor. The sensor is hooked up to an NI DAQ that will record and display values (after some manipulation) on the front panel. I hope to display the sensor values and the corresponding motor position values.

  • How counter and frecuency measurement using parallel port?

Estoy ingresando un tren de pulsos por una linea del
puerto paralelo y necesito detectar los flancos para poder incrementar un contador por cada pulso de entrada.

    Dear, codeman2:
I thank for infinitely its advice to him. But I must work with the parallel port because one is a didactic project and do not have average acquiring the acquisition boards. In addition to be in a stage of study and investigation all inverted time will bring futures benefits. Thank you very much by his interest and it excuses my ingles.

  • I am trying to acquire pulse signal (TTL 0 ,+5v) using parallel port (SPP 25 pins) on pin 12.

The state register adress is 379h. When I run continuously this VI, the value diplays 78 and 58 periodycally.
I think that 0 correponds to 58 and +5v correponds 78. Is this correct ?
    So my questions are:
    1) How can I do to read only pin 12.
    2) How can I do to display graph of a pulse signal (TTL 0 +5v) from value.
I attached the I am using.
    Thank you in advance.

pin 12 is bit 5(32 decimal) of the byte you read from port 379h. So actually 58 is +5V and 78 is 0V.
    in C:
    if(32 & data){
    /* pin 12 is high (+5V) */
    } else {
    /* pin 12 is low (0V) */
graphing depends on your programming language and tools available.
If your signal is slow enough, and you don't need very good accuarcy, use a software timer and get a measurement every x mS

  • HOW TO ACCESS PARALLEL PORT USING JAVA

hello guys.. Please Solve my Problem..
I have to access motor through pc using Parallel Port. I want to know how to program in java to access Parallel Port. So How can i code to access the any Port of Parallel Port. Please Guide me in this..

well I cannot give a more detailed answer than "use the java comm API".
    http://java.sun.com/products/javacomm/
    http://java.sun.com/developer/Books/javaprogramming/cookbook/11.pdf
However Java wasn't built to do these kinds of operations, so it may well be that the API does not provide the functionality you need. In that case you may need a native library to do the work for you, which can make things a lot more difficult.

  • Servo motor control using MCB2300 and Labview

    Hello Everyone,
I have to drive servo motor using MCB2300 board and labview. I am new to LabView as well as MCB2300 board. I understand that I have to generate Pulse to control the servo motor.
I have gone through some of the post but could not find something useful.
I need to do it asap, a fast and eloborating answer is much appreciated.
    Thanks is advanced.

I don't know if this will help you, but think about this tip:
On the back of my (digital-) Servo package there was some data written (see attached image).
You've heard of PWM (Pulse Width Modulation)? If not look it up in
wikipedia / microcontroller.net / (if you speak german) http://www.rn-wissen.de/index.php/Servos or google
The description of the Servo says that I have to send every 200ms +/- 1ms a positive (+5V +/- 1V) signal with a length depending on the angle I want the Servo to be set. The Signal is coded in conjunction to time, which means, as longer the Signal as higher the angle is. The Signal range is in between 70 to 240 ms (with my servo and not exactly). The Signal must repeated every 200 ms like I said before. I don't know, if you understand C but here is a function I wrote, which works fine for me:
    void set_Servo_0(uint8_t angle)
DDRA |= 2; // Specific Port declaration for my µC (Atmel)
uint8_t tick; // a var to count how often I send my Signal
      for(tick = 0; tick < 2; tick++) // loop to count -> send Signal three times
if(getStopwatch1() > 200)  // getStopwatch is a libary specific function to measure time in ms steps
          PORTA |= 1;  // port high
sleep(angle);  // angle comes from outside the function, it is a parameter for this function. Sleep for this time with port high = pos Signal
          PORTA &= ~1;  // then pull down
          setStopwatch1(0); // reset the timer
mSleep(250); // Finally I have to wait for this time (in ms) when I send different angle parameters one after another, to let the whole system
// (µC + Servo and rest of program) to settle down, else I will loose signal steps due to incorrect timing (not nice, but works).
This function gets the angle as Integer from 7 to 24 and puts the Servo in corresponding position one time.
Maybe You can adapt it, good luck.

    I have same problem...
No one more have solve this?
I alread have tried use RXTX library..
    but I have:
java.io.IOException: The device is not connected.
I think that pass-motor don't have correct response for pararell protocol (I need use it with direct write, no ack signal, no read, etc)

  • Using stand alone executables to send data to the parallel port

I have a executable that uses the parallel port to activate an alarm. The program works well on the base machine which is running windows XP. However when I try to run the stand alone executable on a windows NT machine there is nothing sent to the parallel port. I have updated the Cvirt file on all machines. I don't get any error messages when running the stand alone executable.

I have the same situation using parallel port to control a hot swap PCI extender card and no error showed.  I can turn on/off and read correct voltages from the card in base machine.  After creating executables, I can turn on/off the card, but got wrong voltages in target machine.
I've installed AccessHW in both machines and copied AccessHW.dll and cvirte.dll to system32 folder and the folder same with executables.  I also tried installer with port support and serial support checked.
Windows XP is in both machines and LV 7 in base machine.  I use "Output Byte to Port.vi" and "Input Byte from Port.vi" in AccessHW lib.
One thing I observe is initiation.  The card manufacturer provides a program with same functions.  After running their program, the voltage readings from the executables become correct.  The readings remain good after closing their program.  I close the executables and run the executables again and still see good results unless restarting the target machine.
Any solution for the problem? Thanks in advance!

  • JTAG Digital Waveform transfered using USB or parallel port ?

    Hi all
I was wondering if there is a way to send JTAG Digital Waveforms generated by LabVIEW into a parallel port or USB port.  I know that there is a way to use DAQmx devices with JTAG Digital Waveforms where DAQmx drivers take JTAG Digital Waveforms and transfer that into physical signals which is then send to UUT.  I really am in a need to try to mimic whatever a DAQmx can do to make that happen with a parallel port or usb port. I would really appreciate if you can help me it is very urgent.
    Thanks

    Hi Cristopher
I do really appreciate for a quick response. I am full aware of the fact that NI products for digital waveform generation will do the job, plus it is easier to implement them. However my goal is to use an inexpensive device that can generate external timing and my JTAG library and make .exe files from my final code and distribute that setup for several computers in factory. So buying several digital waveform generators from NI for each PC in factory will be a very expensive option. I think now you have a better picture why I am trying to find another inexpensive way to implement these digital waveforms using JTAG library. It would be ideal if I can use parallel port with some external timing to do the trick but I am really not sure where to start. Cirstopher I would really appreciate if you can come up with any suggestions in regards to this problem that I am having.
    Thanks again.
