Session Integrity during Patching

I was wondering about what logged-in users of an HTML DB application experience if the application is being patched while they are working? I know there has been some discussion on this forum before about the fact that the deployment of a new version of an HTML DB application is effectively atomic, but surely there could be an issue if the user is in the middle of a "flow" through some application logic - e.g. in the middle of a wizard-type application or similar.
If, say, the patched application now contains some new items on a page the user has been to that are used on a subsequent page, the user's session will not have those items. There could be an issue about data integrity etc., or some failed validation/process that would not normally be able to occur for a user logging in fresh to the newly patched application.
While we like to minimise downtime, is there a way to forcibly kick users from the application during the patch deployment, or another approach that anyone might suggest? I know that you can set the application to Unavailable, but I believe that if the user doesn't perform any action during the period until the app is Available again, then their session state still persists.
Sorry if what I'm asking is unclear, but I'd like to make sure we have as watertight a patching process as we can.
Jon.

Jon,
The easiest way to avoid this issue is to take down the web server. Any other "workaround" has the potential for something to slip through the cracks.
Having said that, you could do one of the following:
- Run the script late at night, thus minimizing the number of active sessions
- Purge all sessions, immediately make the application Unavailable, and then upgrade. This is likely the most fool-proof method, as all sessions will become invalid immediately, and as long as you can change the application status faster than it takes for someone to log in, you should be good.
- Put a notification of the planned downtime on every page of your application, but never actually take down the server. If it's in their face enough, most uses will plan on doing something else during the downtime, thus minimizing the number of actual live sessions. (Yes, it's sneaky, but it works...)
Thanks,

  • Saving session state during pagination

    See
    http://htmldb.oracle.com/pls/otn/f?p=24317:152
I hacked into the PPR function to save the checkbox value into session state during pagination.
Is there a way to do something similar for checkboxes in the report itself rendered using htmldb_item.checkbox()?
Or is this an ill-advised effort?
[The UI requirement here is clear...I have a bunch of items over many pages and I want to select them using checkboxes and have the selections remembered as I paginate back and forth.
If you use Yahoo Mail, Compose a new message, click on the Insert Addresses link and it pops up a window with all your contacts, you can select them using checkboxes and go to the Next/Previous page and it remembers the selections]
    Thanks

    See
    http://htmldb.oracle.com/pls/otn/f?p=24317:152
Click on the Create/Reset collection button to initialize your own private collection to play with.
The checkboxes are remembered as you paginate thru the resultset. Basically, the state of the checkboxes is saved into session state using htmldb_Get before calling the PPR function to get the next/previous rows.
Carl, let me know what you think of the approach. Is it a viable approach? Any caveats?
[Unfortunately, I had to to make a copy of the builtin html_PPR_Report_Page function to make the above modification in it, didnt see a way to avoid it]
    Thanks

  • Transport of Copies for Modif. Adjust. Transports during patch application

    Hi Experts,
I've got two transport requests(Modification Adjustment Transports) in the DEV system containing SPAU and SPDD corrections for patch APPL-19, I need to include these Modification Adjustment transports when I start applying patch APPL-19 in my QTY system, wherein it prompts me to include Modification Adjustment Transports if any.
I've been told to release these requests in the DEV system encorporate both these requests into once and create a single request of the type Transport of Copies, and supply the Transport Request No. of this Transport of Copies request when it prompts me for Modification Adjustment Transports in the QTY system during patch APPL-19 application.
Please help me out with the procedure to create Transport of Copies for my case, also if you could post some theory on "Transport of Copies", it would be highly helpful.
    Thanks Alot in advance.

    Hi,
Check the thread for transport of copies creation.
    Request type  Transport of Copies

  • Generic error during patching

    Hi experts.
Hope you are all having a great weekend. I am patching, so not so great :(
I have noticed that adpatch is throwing the following error during patching:
    Start Processing Snapshot Info
    AutoPatch error:
Unable to upload "filescopied_2017.txt" to update the current view of the snapshot.
    Uploading "d:\oracle\prodappl\admin\PROD\out\filescopied_2071.txt" ...
This occurrs on each patch; it is not fatal and doesnt hold up the process. I just wanted to know if anyone had any idea about it. I understand there is an adadmin job i can run to remedy this?
To access snapshot information launch adadmin, select option 2 - Maintain Applications Files menu, select 5 - Maintain snapshot information . . . is this the way forward?
    Thanks.

  • SCCM 2012 integration with SCOM 2012 - Disable Alerts during patching

Have SCCM 2012 R2 and SCOM 2012 R2 and use the Software Update Patching process for servers.  When using the checkbox to "Disable Operations Manager Alerts when this program runs" option have noticed on completion of the job and the target
server is rebooted, a scheduled task appears for a short time titled "SCOM 2007 Agent Resume Task".  The task disappears and there is no history to view.
Is this a legacy naming convention from 2007 world when the maintenance mode is turned off from the SCCM patching process?
How do I see the actual code behind the SCCM and SCOM integration with Maintenance mode to validate it.

SCCM should use the following SCOM SDK to do that.
    http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/bb437532.aspx
That's incorrect. There is no API or method to put an OpsMgr agent into maintenance mode on the client itself -- maintenance mode is a centrally controlled feature of OpsMgr. The API/code sample you linked is performing that activity on the management server
which assumes you know the management server name and have permissions to carry out the action -- neither of which is fulfilled by the ConfigMgr agent.
The ConfigMgr agent pauses the OpsMgr client agent service and also unloads the workflows from the OpsMgr agent (it only did the first part in ConfigMgr 2007). This effectively puts the agent in Maintenance Mode (although to my knowledge this is not directly
    reflected in the OpsMgr console).

  • Solution Manager 7.1 SP4: Session Timeout during SOLMAN_SETUP

    Hello Experts,
We recently installed Solution Manager 7.1 SP4 on Linux/Oracle. We also completed the System Preparation and Basic Configuration part of the SOLMAN_SETUP wizard as well (which includes applying the Central Correction Note and other steps).
During the Managed System Setup Part, as soon as we click on the Configure System for a managed system - a new window opens up and immediately we get the below timeout messages:
This session will terminate due to inactivity in 0:00 minutes
To continue working in this session, choose 'Continue Session'
The above is immediately followed by the actual session timeout message:
This session terminated due to inactivity.
    Click Close Popup
or to start new session, press F5.
Now even if we press F5/Refresh, the same cycle repeats.
I already checked the ICM timeout parameters as mentioned in the Guide and further findings with regards to ITS update as in thread WEBGUI Timeout immediately after logging in
Applying the latest kernel patch also did not help. The strange issue is that the session timeout occurs only the LMDB related services, wherease normal services like WEBGUI etc work fine.
Please suggest if anyone came across this issue, especially after update to SP04.
    Thanks and Regards,
    Srikishan

    Hi,
Thanks, I will check the note steps and close this thread accordingly.
Perhaps I need to hone my notes searching skills !

  • Best practice to secure database during patching/upgrade-Vault disabled

I have a highly confidential system and to protect the data in the DB, I intend to use Oracle Vault. In my company, we have centralized services and therefore, the oracle Unix owner and sysdba are owned by this group, not the application dba that "knows" the system (me).
The problem I have is what would be the best way to protect my data from the sysdba user during the window that Vault is disabled?
I thougth maybe I could un-mount and file protect the tablespace from the Unix oracle user during the upgrade process, but the tablespace could be outdated when I remount it after the patch. I am not sure how I might patch it seperatley. I am thinking I might export and drop the schema during the patching, then load it back in when vault is enabled again. This will work for a year or so, but I envision the databases getting too large to do this efficiently.
Does anyone have any thoughts on how I might protect the data in this scenario?
Edited by: user4714217 on Oct 20, 2008 11:06 AM for clarity

    Hi,
I did not understood your question properly, but the thing which I understood is like you do not want any other user to access the database when your security vault is disabled.
    At that time you can
    1) Start the database in restrict mode (only a sysdba can do it).
    2) Change the password/lock the user till the time your patching activity is going (any user with dba role can do it, so might be not so useful)

    Hi
Q: I am applying patch can I open another session and run adadmin ? (Thanks to Amit Pancholia for pointing this out)
A: Yes & No (depends on stage of patching), you can run adadmin if FND_INSTALL_PROCESSES is NOT locked (in use) by adpatch session. If this table is in use by adpatch session then you can’t run adadmin at same time.

  • Need to place the SCOM agents in Maintenance Mode automatically during Patching activity

    Hi,
I have a requirement to place the SCOM agent servers in MM automatically during shceduled patching every month. I have gone through few blogs but could not find an apt solution for SCOM 2012 R2 environment.
I think the process should be..
     1. Create a management pack to monitor all servers for event 1074 (or/and 22), which gets triggere during the patching
     2. Write some powershell to put a machine into maintenance mode.
     3. Trigger the powershell script to run when needed.
    Any suggestions please?
    Thanks

Where doing this in our environment. We have a SCOM monitor looking for Reboot events (ID 1074) where the event contains Shutdown Type: Reboot. the monitor creates an Informational alert which Orchestrator picks up and then sets the machine in MM for 30
minutes. So its any time the machine is intentionally rebooted. You can have it look for CcmExec in the Event description (assuming you're using SCCM) if you only want it to work when being patched.

  • Deploying 2x Exchange Server 2013 CAS server email traffic high availability during patching & reboot

    Hi people,
What is the best way to utilize VMware technology to host 2x the Exchange Server 2013 CAS role VM in my production VM to ensure that the email traffic is not halted during server patching ?
Previously in Exchange Server 2007 I am using Windows NLB (IGMP Multicast) on my ESXi 4.1, now with ESXi 5.1 and 2013 I wonder if there is any better way to make sure that the server failover does not disrupt the mail flow between the Smarthost and the CAS server role.
    Thanks

    Hey AlbertWT,
Can you clarify exactly what you mean when you say "server patching?"  Do you mean patching at the ESXi host level or something within the guest?
As you probably know Exchange 2013 CAS no longer needs NLB or even a hardware load balancer.  Due to changes in the architecture, even simple DNS round robin is "enough" to load balance the CAS role.  NLB has its own set of headaches which you are probably all too familiar with so getting rid of that can help remove a lot of complexity from the situation.
If you can clarify what you mean by "server patching" and "server failover" in your post I think that would be helpful for me to give you a more definitive answer.
