Set auto commit to false

Hi
I have problems with multiple updates causing a Block in the database.In order to solve this I am trying to set commits to false and true explicitly before and after updates.Since I am performing updates within a loop I would like to know if I need to explicitly inside the loop.
For eg can i do something like this
for (int i = 0;i < part_Vect.size() ;i++) {
conn.setCommit(false);
sql = Update stmt;
stmt.executeUpdate(sql);
conn.setCommit(true);
} // end loop
or should i set the commits outside the loop
Thanks
Arn

Most of the time I'd put the commit related stuff outside of the loop to reduce the number of database calls and guarantee data integrity. There are a couple of factors to consider though.
1. Whether you want all the updates to be committed in one transaction. If there is a failure in the middle of your operation, is it ok if some updates have been performed and others have not. Can you restart and recover correctly? If you need a single transaction, then the commit code should be outside of the loop.
2. The number of updates. The more updates there are in a transaction, the more database locks will be required and the greater the performance hit. The limit depends on your configuration and access needs. If there are several thousand updates and many other users who need to read the data, a different design may be required.

    Jakob,
    That's a good question. I don't have much experience with HSQLDB and
    JBoss, but I imagine that there's a configuration option somewhere
    that's setting autocommit to true. We only try to set autocommit to
    false if we see that it's set to true (by invoking conn.getAutoCommit()).
    What do your HSQL properties look like? Do you get any hits when running
    'grep -ri autocommit /path/to/jboss' from a terminal window?

  • Auto-Commit and Pooled JDBC Connections

    Forum Members,
    If I am using Oracle Pooled JDBC Connections in the OC4J container is auto-commit set to "true" by default?
    If I set auto-commit to "false" and then close the logical connection, when that connection is handed out again on a later call to getConnection(), is auto-commit automatically set back to "true"?
    Thanks,
    Richard

    Richard,
    Pardon me if I am stating the obvious, but you could test that in your code by invoking the getAutoCommit() method in interface java.sql.Connection.
    My experience (with OC4J stand-alone versions up to -- and including -- 10.1.2) is that the behaviour depends on which data source you have configured. For example, if you have defined an "ejb-location" attribute in your "data-sources.xml" file, and you use that as your JNDI lookup for your data source, then OC4J handles transactions and you shouldn't deal with "auto-commit" at all. See the following post for more details:
    Re: OC4J 10.1.3 Preview 4 - Global transaction active
    But if you have defined a "location" attribute and use that, then you do need to handle transactions explicitly.
    Hope this helps.
    Good Luck,
    Avi.

  • Auto Commit from PL/SQL

    Hello All,
    Is this possible to set Auto Commit on/off
    between DM statements in a PL/SQL block
    Please suggest me.
    Thanks in advance.

    No, you will have to explicitly issue a COMMIT or ROLLBACK when it makes sense to do it.
    The autocommit feature of SQL*Plus (a client application) is not available inside PL/SQL.
    However, an entire PL/SQL block when run from SQL*Plus would be considered as one statement (unit) and autocomit (if enabled) will commit all DML statements performed inside the PL/SQL block (and any blocks called from it).
    Generally, its not a good idea to use this autocommit feature (even if available) since you lose all the control over your transactions. Your transaction never spans one single statement at a time.

  • Oracle.xml.sql.OracleXMLSQLException:Cannot enable auto commit within JTS transaction

    Hi All,
    OracleXMLSave class in the Oracle XDK is being used to load XML data into an 8170 database. The Java code is running in IBM WebSphere with container-managed transactions. When JTA is enabled with the Merant JDBC driver for Oracle, we get the following error when the XML is loaded:
    oracle.xml.sql.OracleXMLSQLException: Cannot enable auto commit within JTS
    transaction
         at java.lang.Throwable.fillInStackTrace(Native Method)
         at oracle.xml.sql.dml.OracleXMLSave.saveXML(OracleXMLSave.java:2213)
         at oracle.xml.sql.dml.OracleXMLSave.insertXML(Compiled Code)
    This suggests the OracleXMLSave class is not aware of the fact that it is now operating in a JTS transaction where control is managed elsewhere. i.e. should also not attempt to commit or rollback, as this is the responsibility of the container.
    Is there a property which needs to set to prevent the above or does the XDK not work with J2EE (JTS) transactions?.
    If you have any useful comments, let me know. Testing the above presents me with a number of problems so if this is easily explained , let me know.
    Thanks,
    Malcolm

    Clearly , there does seem to be something a bit odd with the above stack.
    <Bug:1917808> mentions OracleXMLSave in context of plsql equivalent : dbms_xmlsave . i.e dbms_xmlsave is a wrapper around OracleXMLSave class.
    disabling autocommit on connection as follows should help:
    conn = DriverManager.getConnection("connect string","scott","tiger");
    conn.setAutoCommit(false);
    to disble auto commit and see if this has an effect.
    This issue might be <Bug:1497506>. If disabling autocommit does not work then it appears that it could be this issue .

  • How the Auto Commit works in APEX

    Hi,
    I have a PL\SQL Process which consist of suppose insert / update / delete statements.
    insert into emp ()
    values ()
    update emp
    set
    delete from emp
    where empno = Just want to know..when apex do the Auto Commit..I mean after each DML operation.
    Thanks,

    Thanks..Varad for the response.
    one more clarification.
    suppose I have a PL\Process and I am having the following DML in sequence, DML is for the same table EMP
    insert into emp (empno) values (1234)
    delete from emp where empno != 1234First I am inserting into EMP and based on that insert, I am doing some delete from the same table EMP.
    so when I come to delete part, the data '1234' into EMP table must be commited, so want to know if I have to issue a COMMIT after the insert statement.
    Thanks,

  • Disable auto commit in plsql

    Hello,
    is there a way to disable the auto commit in plsql code? In my knowledge it is setted to true using plsql code...
    Thank you.

    Thank you for your answer. My problem is:
    I have an pl/sql package building a web page using mod pl/sql and Apache.
    What happened is that I don't need to explicit commit for all the DB operations (insert/update): it is automatic! If I want to handle the commit/rollback what I have to do inside my code?
    Best Regards,

  • How to set auto backup as like quark express

    Hi,
    I want to know how to set auto backup opening files in InDesign 6 as like quark express

    InDesign restores everything after a crash.
    Versioning was removed aw hile ago, now you should set it up on OS or computer level or use a cloud service like dropbox which offers such functionality.
    For formatting use Paragraph Styles, for exceptions use Character styles. It is a no-go to make a font bold, it must be done via styles. I think it is a problem with Quark documents that people bolded with the B button their text, this caused false styles and did no semantic styling which would not allow to create PDF/UA documents.
    Paragraph and Character Styles are completely different in InDesign than in Quark. In InDesign every font property is defined in a paragraph style. Character Styles are only used for exceptions and only the different properties are defined. E.g. if you have black text and want some words or letters to be red the InDesign Character style would define only the property character color to red, everything else would remain empty. So you could apply the same character style to text with different paragraph styles with different fonts and sizes. In Quark you would have to set up a different character style for each paragraph style.

  • Disable Auto commit

    I have developed a web serice using JDeveloper, the Web service is rapped on ORACLE DB packages.
    so I use the JDeveloper wizard to create the Web service using the DB connection.
    and I deployed it using ORACLE application server, when I tested the web service using Internet explorer, I found that all transactions are committed though there is no commit code in the DB packages.
    How can I make the webservice disable the auto commit, Actulally I don't know if this commit is made by the application server or by the JAVA application or by Internet Explorer.

    Best Regards,
    Lorenzo.

  • How do I turn off searching from the address bar. Setting keyword.enabled to false is not working.

    I never want to search from the address bar. I've been able to turn off this horrible annoying feature in the past by setting "keyword.enabled" to false but this no longer seems to work. Is there any way to fix this so that searching from the address bar never happens with any search engine?

    If you set keyword.enabled to false, then what Firefox normally does is check whether your address bar entry is a valid server name (first DNS lookup) and, if not, it will try fixup (e.g., www.+''what you typed''+.com) (second DNS lookup).
    If you get search results, particularly if you get results from some site other than your preferred search engine, there are two possible explanations:
    (1) DNS provider hijack.
    There are some service providers that do not answer the DNS lookups honestly and instead will divert you to their own page of search results. In that situation, there sometimes is a link on the page to opt out, either right there, or behind an explanation (why do I get this page?) or a settings link. You may have to look around. Or if your service provider won't let you opt out, you might need to switch to using OpenDNS or Google Public DNS.
    You probably should also check your connection setting it case that has been modified:
    "3-bar" menu button (or Tools menu) > Options > Advanced > Network mini-tab > "Settings" button
    Try "No proxy" here to see whether that helps.
    (2) Bad add-on.
    Some extensions will divert honest DNS misses to their preferred search site. Here's what I suggest for cleaning out bad add-ons:
    (A) Open the Windows '''Control Panel''', Add/Remove Programs. After the list loads, click the "Installed on" column heading to group the infections, I mean, additions, by date. This can help in smoking out undisclosed bundle items that snuck in with some software you agreed to install. Take out as much trash as possible here.
    (B) Then, in Firefox, open the '''Add-ons page''' using either:
    * Ctrl+Shift+a
    * "3-bar" menu button (or Tools menu) > Add-ons
    In the left column, click Plugins. Set nonessential and unrecognized plugins to "Never Activate".
    In the left column, click Extensions. Then, if in doubt, disable (or Remove, if possible) unrecognized and unwanted extensions.
    Often a link will appear above at least one disabled extension to restart Firefox. You can complete your work on the tab and click one of the links as the last step.
    (C) Search for remaining issues with the '''scanning/cleaning tools''' listed in our support article: [[Troubleshoot Firefox issues caused by malware]]. Note that the tools are free and take considerable time to run. If they seem to finish quickly and then ask for payment, you might have a Fake AV infection. Please use the specialized forums listed in the article in that case.

  • Auto Commit in Oracle Document Capture

    Hi,
            I have recently installed and configured Oracle Document Capture 10g as a part of IPM installation. I have configured ODC to Scan, Index and commit to UCM 11g system. Scanning and indexing are going fine without and problem. However, I could not make the commit automatic. Please help me configure an auto-commit, so that I don't have to go to ODC every time and do a manual commit. Or is it possible to auto-commit at all ?
    Thank you
    Rama

    In this case I think the problem is somewhere else. Normally, an indexed batch is committed immediately when you you confirm the message at the end of the last page. For that you don't even need the Commit server configured. Commit server with Indexing is used mainly in use cases, when you want to schedule committing (e.g. to a certain time). I guess the Commit Server is not activated, because the batch is not fully processed. AFAIK, recently released 11g is much better option for small batches.
    I'd recommend you to try the Commit Server together with the Import/Recognition Server, which can be fully automated. Maybe this will enable you to understand what the problem with Indexing could be.
