  • I set up the VPN, so how do access server at work?

I am a complete novice when it comes to VPNs.  I was given permission to work from home and was told I had to set up a VPN to access shared documents saved on the server.  I have a PC at work and a MacBook Pro at home, and my work IT department had no idea on how to set up the VPN on the Mac and won't give me any support.  (I tried and failed to get the VPN set up on our desktop PC at home and the work IT department claimed it was a problem with my broadband server).  I did my research, got the VPN set up on the Mac, and it shows that I'm connected.  I'm at a standstill.  What do I do now?    I apologize because I can't remember which version of the OS I have, but I bought the Mac almost a year ago, if that's any help.
    I thank you in advance.

My question is even more basic than this.  I can see on the network applications screen that I am connected, so where do I go from there?  I don't know the security protocol.
At this time you are not providing enough information to get any informed help. Go back to IT and ask for the settings for the VPN on a PC, post them here, we'll translate them to Macspeak. Are you trying to access the desktop of the office machine or just the file storage areas on the server?
PS: Your IT department is hopeless.

  • How to setup a basic VPN

    Hi,
I just bought a Linksys BEFSX41 VPN router, I wanted to make a basic VPN.  I tried more than a week, I followed the guide.  But it never work and really made me headache.
I hope any body can help me to make it work.
I setup the router as the guide, the local IP is 192.168.1.1, I disabled the firewall, I set a statci IP, 10.254.5.92 for the router's WAN IP.  I also enable a tunnel. give name to it. setup the local secure group, remote secure group.
The VPN client is a XP computer, I also give a static IP to it, it's 10.254.5.7.  I also create a IP Security Policy on the Local Computer.  The VPN connection is a L2TP coonection, the pre-shared key is same as that in the IP Security policy and the tunnel.
The client can ping the router, but never can login the the VPN.
Here is the router log, any body find any thing wrong there:

  • Set MTU - Cisco VPN x64

I've installed the Cisco Client many times before on x32 systems but having just installed same on an x64 System (Win-7 Pro) I just noticed the "Set MTU". Client version I am using is 5.0.07.0290.
What is the purpose for this, and what setting should I use?
    Thanks,
    Ron

Here is more explaination on "Set MTU" on VPN Client for your reference:
    http://www.cisco.com/en/US/docs/security/vpn_client/cisco_vpn_client/vpn_client500_501/administration/5vcAch11.html#wpmkr1157551
Basically it is only needed when you are troubleshooting issue with performance as default MTU on internet devices is typically 1500, and if the VPN Client is sending bigger file than 1500, then it would cause fragmentation which could possibly be blocked along the path, and/or taking the server end sometime to reconstruct the fragmented vpn packets.
However, in normal circumstance, the "Set MTU" setting should not be interfere.

  • Setting up IPsec VPNs to use with Cisco Anyconnect

So I've been having trouble setting up vpns on our ASA 5510. I would like to use IPsec VPNs so that we don't have to worry about licensing issues, but from what I've read you can do this with and still use Cisco Anyconnect. My knowledge on how to set up VPNs especially in iOS verion 8.4 is limited so I've been using a combination of command line and ASDM.
I'm finally able to connect from a remote location but once I connect, nothing else works. From what I've read, you can use IPsec for client-to-lan connections. I've been using a preshared key for this. Documentation is limited on what should happen after you connect? Shouldn't I be able to access computers that are local to the vpn connection? I'm trying to set this up from work. If I VPN from home, shouldn't I be able to access all resources at work? I think because I've used the command line as well as ASDM I've confused some of the configuration. Plus I think some of the default policies are confusing me too. So I probably need a lot of help. Below is my current configuration with IP address altered and stuff that is completely non-related to vpns removed.
NOTE: We are still testing this ASA and it isn't in production.
Any help you can give me is much appreciated.

So then what does this mean for us VPN-wise? Is there any way we can set up multiple VPNs with this license?

    Hi trogdor182,
Please check if the VPN ports are opened on your router. Meanwhile, please run SBS BPA and check if you can
find some related issues. Please fix all that BPA can find and then check if this issue still exists.
In addition, please navigate to the path: C:\ProgramData\Microsoft\Windows Server\Logs folder. Then check the
Dashboard.log if you can find some related clues.
There is an article that you can refer to.
    Configure DirectAccess in Windows Server
    Essentials
By the way, when this issue occurred, have you re-run the wizard to configure VPN in the server 2012 essentials?
    Was the same result?
    Hope this helps.
    Best regards,
    Justin Gu

  • How can I set up a VPN on my mac?

I am trying to set up a VPN cnnection so that I can access my work from my mac.  The system there is Windows based.  I have found articles about how to set up a VPN on a mac but there doesn't appear to be an area to put the static IP address or the computer IP address.  Any help would be appreciated!

Have read the printer manual, it will contain instructions for connecting it to a network, and then to your Mac. You don't identify this printer so it's difficult to be more specific.
You can also go to the printer manufacturers website and seek assistance there.

  • How can I set up a VPN between two MacBook Pros

I am about to buy a new MacBook Pro, I will be leaving my old MacBook Pro in my office in Nicaragua and traveling with my new MBP. I would like to be able to access files on my old laptop from the road, I imagine using some sort of VPN software to patch into my old computer as long as it is on and connected to the Internet.
Can you help me to set this up. It feels as though it could be difficult, but I imagine it si much simpler than I think.
    Thanks,
    Richard.

I'm mainly using it to bypass an internet block. Could you explain in detail how to set up a vpn that will also work on iPhone? Do you have any recommended applications for me to install? Thank you

To run a public VPN server behind an NAT gateway, you need to do the following:
    1. Give the gateway either a static external address or a dynamic DNS name. The latter must be a DNS record on a public DNS registrar, not on the server itself. Also in the latter case, you must run a background process to keep the DNS record up to date when your IP address changes.
    2. Give the VPN server a static address on the local network, and a hostname that is not in the top-level domain "local" (which is reserved for Bonjour.)
    3. Forward external UDP ports 500, 1701, and 4500 (for L2TP) and TCP port 1723 (for PPTP) to the corresponding ports on the VPN server.
If your router is an Apple device, select the Network tab in AirPort Utility and click Network Options. In the sheet that opens, check the box marked
    Allow incoming IPSec authentication
if it's not already checked, and save the change.
With a third-party router, there may be a similar setting.
    4. Configure any firewall in use to pass this traffic.
    5. Each client must have an address on a netblock that doesn't overlap the one assigned by the VPN endpoint. For example, if the endpoint assigns addresses in the 10.0.0.0/24 range, and the client has an address on a local network in the 10.0.1.0/24 range, that's OK, but if the local network is 10.0.1.0/16, there will be a conflict. To lessen the chance of such conflicts, it's best to assign addresses in a random sub-block of 10.0.0.0./0 with a 24-bit netmask.
    6. "Back to My Mac" on the server is incompatible with the VPN service.
If the server is directly connected to the Internet, see this blog post.

Clear the cache and the cookies from sites that cause problems.
    "Clear the Cache":
    * Tools > Options > Advanced > Network > Offline Storage (Cache): "Clear Now"
"Remove Cookies" from sites causing problems:
    * Tools > Options > Privacy > Cookies: "Show Cookies"
Start Firefox in <u>[[Safe Mode]]</u> to check if one of the extensions is causing the problem (switch to the DEFAULT theme: Firefox (Tools) > Add-ons > Appearance/Themes).

  • Help with setting up a VPN on a RV042

Is there any documentation out there on a step-by-step instructions on setting up a vpn on a RV042 router?

    Scott,
You can Google RV042 vpn setup and many links will displayed on how to set up vpn. This might be versions 1 & 2 with different looking interfaces but general setup is the same.
Also if you go to cisco.com website you also can search for RV042 setup guides. Link below was brought up using (RV042 vpn setup) @ cisco.com search.

  • What is the best way to have complete security? Should I set up a VPN? How is that done and information used, if this is a method of further security. Thanks

Can anyone help me with applying settings for ultimate security and privacy. I like to keep the computer free from clutter and info, cookies, cache etc... Are  there any applications or support I can add to the already wonderful OS. Should I set up a VPN? Any advise or knowledge would be appreciated. Thank you in advance.

I have read several articles in which it says "the rule of three" meaning three backups , is this for real?
I don't think you understood the context. It was meant to say that your Time Machine backup drive should be three times the capacity as the drive(s) backed up. If your drive were 100 GBs, then the backup drive for Time Machine should be 300 GBs. In fact it should be at least twice the capacity. More being better.
I also thought about the cloning aspect but have never used it before.
Cloned backups differ from Time Machine in that they are fully bootable (which is not the case for Time Machine) and only require a backup drive to be the same size as the drive backed up. Incremental backups simply replace old files with new copies and new files. This requires using third-party backup utilities such as:
    Some Suggested Backup Software
      1. Carbon Copy Cloner
      2. Data Backup
      3. Deja Vu
      4. SuperDuper!
      5. Synk Pro
      6. Tri-Backup
Others may be found at VersionTracker or MacUpdate.
Visit The XLab FAQs and read the FAQ on backup and restore.  Also read How to Back Up and Restore Your Files.
I would also like to use SL as a second OS with this computer , how would I do this without using my internal hd and adding partitions to it as I understand that SL is the only OS that you can boot externally from the new OS's that Apple has used.(Lion/ML)
Technically, this is a different topic and should have been posted separately.
Any version of OS X may be installed and booted from an external drive. But, iMacs made after 2009 cannot be started from the retail copy of Snow Leopard. Snow Leopard must be updated to 10.6.8 to boot any of the extant iMacs produced after 2009. This does not apply to the yet released new iMac which will only run Mountain Lion.

  • Home page loads fine but all othes pages load in no styleeven through it is set to basic page style

started today dident load home page right had to reload it sence then the home page has been loading fine all search pages have loaded in no style. i click view, go down to page style it set to basic page style

That is exactly the procedure I went through. This will allow me to use it as a homepage as long as Firefox remains open. I can return from other pages using the home icon and it works fine.
HOWEVER, as soon as I close firefox it won't load.
I did notice that the upper case letters are somehow turned to lower case for the location arguments of the page in the current page entry and they don't get changed in the bookmark entry.

  • Determing IP Address Ranges for Setting up a VPN

Following the directions that I've found here ... I'm attempting to setup a VPN for my company to share documents.
I am using a mac mini, which is connected to a router, and the router to a cable modem.
In order to set up the VPN using L2TP over IPsec, I need to enter both a Starting and Ending IP Address.
I have found only a single IP address for the mac mini, and when going into system profiler have found various other addresses and am not sure how to properly setup the IP Address Range.
Some of the categories shown in the System Profiler are:
IPv4 Addresses, IPv4 Configuration Method, Interface Name, Router, Subnet Masks, IPv6 Configuration Method, DNS Server Addresses, etc.
However, I only see 1 single IP Address.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

OK, that's good, you have all you need.
You are probably going to need to read up on the management of the base station as this is going to be your NAT router (remember that from my earlier post?) and your internet firewall. Management will be via a web browser, on a computer directly connected to base station's ethernet port. There will be a default IP address to put into the web browser to reach the management page. This IP address can probably be found by opening the Network prefs on one of your airport computers and looking to see what the 'Router' IP is set to (I'm presuming that the base station is still in its default function). It will also be in the base station documentation.
The base station will act as your DHCP server (we could alternatively use the server but lets keep it as the base station - no real difference). There will be a management page for this where you can specify its own IP address and also what range you want to distribute to other computers. For example...
    192.168.1.1 for base station
    192.168.1.2 to 192.168.1.40 for DHCP
Remember, we do not want to hand out all the IP addresses by DHCP because we need to keep some back for the server's static IP and the VPN users. So maybe we keep...
    192.168.1.100 for the server
    192.168.1.200-219 for L2TP vpn
192.168.1.220-239 for PPTP vpn (if this is also needed for PCs and the like).
Via management screen, confirm that NAT routing on the base station is enabled (this allows all LAN computers to access internet via your base station which is now your 'Internet Router'.
Confirm that the firewall on the base station is enabled. This protects your LAN (on the private side of the router) from all other traffic on the internet (the public WAN).
Switch off both the modem and the base station.
Connected the modem to the WAN port of the base station (ordinary ethernet cable).
Keep modem off for 5 - 10 minutes (this clears any cached settings at the ISP end). Switch on the cable modem and wait a few minutes for it to settle.
Switch on the base station and reconnect to the management screen. There will probably be an Internet Wizard or some such thing in the management page to establish the connection with the modem.
When the connection to the modem is OK, you should be able to browse rest of internet from the computer you have directly connect to the base station
Restart any computers connected by airport. They should now also be able to browse internet.
Disconnect computer which is directly connected to base station.
The ethernet port on base station now gets connected to your switch.
The Server connects to the switch too.
You are probably going to need to give your server a new IP address, in the same network range as now being used elsewhere in your LAN. This is not quite as trivial as just changing it in the Network Prefs although you may well be able to get it going fine doing just that (to be honest, I'm not sure I want to add that bit into this already lengthening post
If you want to just change the IP address in Network Prefs just now, remember that the Router field will be the IP address of your base station. The DNS server (in server network prefs) will also be base station.
I have skipped past a bit regarding the server setup and also omitted how to get the vpn traffic from the WAN to the server (hint: port forwarding in router) but i think it is wise just to get the rest of the network up and running behind a secure router/firewall first.
