Set up kids ipad mini

I have bought a mini for my son (age 6).
I want to set up ipad - how do I do this?  When I switch it on do I set up a new id for my son - or log in as me?
How do I get my apps over onto his ipad from my phone- so I can delete them off mine?
Thanks in advance

If you want to share apps you need to use your Apple ID on his device. The apps are tied to the ID.
YOu may want to explore Family Sharing. I've never used it and don't have the ability to explore it,but it may help with your situation.
You may also want to look into settings, especially for the app store and in app purchases.  Since you may be using your Apple ID which would be tied to your credit card you'll want to control his access - namely keep him from accidentally purchasing content or apps.
There's also some content controls in the restrictions that you may want to look into.

How do you want it to be set up ? If you want the same content as you have on your other iPad then copy any purchases that aren't already in your Mac's iTunes library by connecting it to it and using the File > Devices > Transfer Purchases menu option, back up the iPad (File > Devices > Back Up), and then restore that backup onto your iPad Mini

I was setting up an iPad Mini and it updated my iMac's OS. It reverted to 2011 and I have lost emails, desktop data and Adobe won't let me in to software. Help!

The iPad was plugged into the iMac to transfer apps etc and asked to update the macs OS. The result is that the last 12 months of emails have gone ( emails not working) as have whatever files were on the desktop. The calendar has also reverted to 2011.
Worse still is adobe software I use for work won't let me open.
    Any ideas?

  • I set up my iPad mini without a computer and now, when trying to connect it to my mac it asks if I want to set up as new iPad

I set up my iPad mini without a computer and have been using it for months.  Now, when trying to connect it to my mac it asks if I want to set up as new iPad or restore from back up (Which I don't have).
Is there a way I can connect to my computer and itunes without losing everything I've done on it for the past months?

Go ahead and set it up as new. It's just new as far as iTunes is concerned. Shouldn't result in the loss of anything.

  • Advice for setting up new iPad mini, for our 13 yr old, needed.

We are buying an iPad mini for our daughter's 13th birthday present, and naturally, are full of fear & hesitations for all the obvious security reasons. But, she has ADHD & some learning disabililities, and we know that the iPad Mini with app's could help her overcome several academic & organizational challenges when she enters highschool next year.
She, and we, have some questions though, about the WISEST (ie: most responsible) way to set it up for her use.
Should we set up the iPad mini as completely free from our family mac desktop (which still runs OS X 10.6.8, not Lion)?
Should she get her own Apple ID? This would allow her own Cloud storage, & foster future responsibility, but then would she still be able to access app's stored on our family computer & other iPads.?
Should we start her own iTunes account? So that she can buy her own tunes & app's. But once again, could she manually sync already purchased stuff from our family computer?
Backing up: should she back up her iPad mini with iCloud (her own apple ID) or with iTunes?
If we did set her up with her own Apple ID (that we would know the password to), could we still set parental controls - which she actually wants(!)?
She would like limits on the time she can spend on the internet, AND time limits on playing with certain games - as she fears getting "addicted" to the games.
How would we set time limits on app use?
Thanks very much for your suggestions and advice. If you have any other practical parenting / iPad experience, I welcome your suggestions. We'd rather not learn the hard way..

There would be no issue syncing it with your computer and putting content on it. It can back itself up to iCloud, but another backup of the content on a computer is always a good idea.
If you already have an Apple ID with purchased apps, it would be fine to let her use it. You can use a shared Apple ID (for iTunes, iBooks, App Store), and have a seperate iCloud account (To sync critical info and back-up).
The parental controls in iOS are independent from an Apple ID, you can set-up the restrictions when you get the iPad and adjust them to what you are most comfortable with.

Try this  - Reset the iPad by holding down on the Sleep and Home buttons at the same time for about 10-15 seconds until the Apple Logo appears - ignore the red slider - let go of the buttons. (This is equivalent to rebooting your computer.) No data/files will be erased.

  • Setting up kids iPad

How would you recommend setting my kids iPad.  Individual accounts? Their own apple I'd? Email?

How old are the kids? They have to be 13 to get an Apple ID. The iPad is a one user device as far as setup.

  • I bought my kids iPad minis. Can I sync them with my iPad

Can I sync my kids iPad minis with my iPad?

What exactly do you want to sync to your kids iPads from yours?
You can't do it directly. But you can sync the same apps etc. to them by syncing them to the same iTunes Library on the computer you sync your iPad to.

  • Set my two kids iPad mini up using my account details do all my apps like what's app about imaginable get transferred

I Have set up my two kids iPads both using my details my daughter is on family sharing does my  what's app appear on their iPads

I think I will do this.  I will use my apple ID and set face time and message to work independently.  That solves one problrem.  My other problem and maybe my bigger problem is that if I am using my apple ID, how do I iflter all of this so that my kids don't see my contacts, get my apps, etc. ?

  • HT1212 Hello   my kids Ipad mini is disabled, so I connected to the computer and now its asking for the passcode, which is not know.  How do i set a new passcode?

Forgetten Passcode for Ipad mini,  How do I reset the passcode?
    Thx

You can't just reset the passcode.  You'll have to restore the device.
Follow the directions in this link:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1212
If that doesn't work, you need to use recovery mode:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1808
Next time write the passcode somewhere safe for future reference.

  • Setting up an iPad mini when I already have an iPad 2

I bought an ipad mini today. I already have an ipad 2 but will be passing it on to my three year old. I have many apps that are both suitable for myself and ones that are suitable for my three year old. As a result of this I want to use the same apple ID so I don't have to purchase all the apps again. It is my understanding that I can have up to five devices per apple ID. Is this true?
My next question is what would be the best way to set it up?
Just do a restore of my back up and then delete the kiddie apps? or
Set it up as a brand new iPad?
If I set it up as a brand new iPad but using my old Apple ID will I be able to use the already purchased apps or will I have to purchase them again.
I was thinking that it might be best to set it up as a brand new iPad as then when I do a back up I won't end up getting all my three year old's apps on my computer each time.
What have other people done in my situation? I would like to make it as streamlined as possible so I don't have to fiddle about each time I sync the different ipads with my itunes account.

Yes, you can have multiple devices on the same apple ID.
As long as you use that same apple ID, you won't need to repurchase your apps.
As to set up as new or restore from a backup, I guess it depends on what else you have on there. Lots of data you don't want to have to set back up again? Documents, etc?
I suppose what I'd do is sync your old one. Set your new one up from the restore of the old one. Then you can either take stuff off your old one, or wipe all content and settings on the old one, and set it up as new and then only put on it what you want your kid to have on it. You can also enable restrictions to keep him/her from doing things you may not want done, like using safari, etc.
How I'd do it isn't the only way. Maybe you want to set your new one up from scratch and just restrict/delete stuff off the old one? It can certainly work that way as well.
You'll also want to make sure the 'automatically sync apps' etc is off for both devices, that way what you buy doesn't go onto their iPad and vice versa.

  • I'm trying to restore factory setting on my ipad mini and I keep getting error 2001.  It won't turn on and won't restore.

I've been trying to fix my sister in law's ipad mini.  When I plug the ipad mini into itunes it say's it needs to restore factory settings.  When I do that, it tries to do it, but then says it can't because of an unknown error 2001.  I've tried it over and over, unplugged it and plugged it back in, tried to restore numerous times and the same thing keeps coming up.  It won't turn on and the screen just shows that I need to plug it into itunes.
Any help would be greatly appreciated

To narrow down the issue, you can also change up your hardware:
Use the USB cable that came with your device, or a different Apple USB cable.
Plug your cable into a different USB port directly on your computer. Don't plug it into your keyboard.
    Try a different computer.
If necessary, resolve any further issues with the USB connection, then with your security software.
