SetLoginTimeout behavior with the Oracle driver

Hi,
I noticed a number of posts on Metalink indicating setLoginTimeout() does not work with the Oracle jdbc drivers. It is documented as such in the 8.1.7 JDBC doc. But I am wondering if this is still true with the 9i drivers.
If so are there any workarounds to generate exceptions or recover gracefully when the db machine is down or the network connectivity to it is down ??
It seems like a fairly drastic flaw in the drivers if it is not able recover from system down type situations.
- Manish

I've seen you've been posting the same message in MetaLink, and, again, no answer from Oracle so far.
It looks like we're having the same problem. In our environment, cross-network connections are being broken down by our firewall, and then the connection hangs forever when the next statement is issued. I wanted to solve this by telling out Java people to use a timeout.
In case you have any news on this, I'd be happy to hear about it.

  • In Trouble with the Oracle JDBC Driver version - 10.1.0.5.0

    Hi !
    Without any problems i'm using the Oracle JDBC Driver version - 10.1.0.3.0 to access to the
    Oracle database (Oracle Database 10g Release 10.2.0.1.0 - 64bit Production).
    But exchanging the JDBC Driver 10.1.0.3.0 to 10.1.0.5.0 brings up the following problem:
    the statement
         con.prepareStatement(sql, resultSetType, resultSetConcurrency, resultSetHoldability)
         (with parameters resultSetType = 1003, resultSetConcurrency = 1007, resultSetHoldability= 1)
    returns null !
    while using the Oracle JDBC Driver version - 10.1.0.3.0 the statement (with same parameters)
    returns a correct PreparedStatement.
    Every hint or idea is welcome.
    Best regards,
    Claus

    Claus,
    Pardon me if I am stating the obvious, but why don't you use the 10.2 JDBC driver with your 10.2 database? The driver is part of the database distribution. Otherwise, you can download the driver from the OTN Web site.
    Good Luck,

  • Sub queries with the Oracle OLEDB driver

    We have been testing the Oracle OLEDB driver through VB/ADO on Win2k and have found some VERY disturbing issues. First, some background - version 8.1.7.2, using client side-disconnected recordsets.
    A simple query with one or more subqueries is returning no rows when running the same query in SQLPlus returns the desired results. EX: Select a.*, (select Typename from user_types where user_types.type_id =a.type_id) user_type_name from users_group a where user_id = 5
    remove the sub-select and the ORACLE OLEDB driver returns a single row. Leave it in and you get recordcount = 0 and rs.eof is true.
    Can anyone explain this?
    Thanks

  • Web Logic 6.1 JDBC Pooling with the Oracle Thin Driver

    Hi,
    We're slowly getting through a WebLogic 4.5.1 to 6.1 conversion for a small application
    at my company. Initially, we had trouble getting the Oracle thin driver working.
    We've finally cracked this nut. Now we're trying to get pooling working, and
    cannot find an example of doing this with the Oracle thin driver.
    Would anyone be able to provide:
    1. the portion of the config.xml that pertains to building a connection pool using
    the Oracle thin driver
    2. the two lines of code for loading the driver and getting a connection from
    this pool
    i.e.
    Driver d = (Driver)Class.forName("weblogic.jdbc.pool.Driver").newInstance();
    Connection c = d.connect("jdbc:weblogic:pool:myPool", null);
    Thanks very much!

    You don't usually edit the config.xml unless it is absolutely necessar. Instead,
    you can config the pool in the GUI admin console, quite easily. After you successfully
    configed the pool in the console, it is written into the config.xml file for you.
    Only thing special when config the pool is the name of the driver and the url.
    url: jdbc:oracle:thin@dbhost:dbport:dbinstance
    driver: oracle.jdbc.driver.OracleDriver
    If you prefer, you can also config the pool from the command line. It is detailed
    in the "Weblogic Server Command-line Interface Reference".
    2. the two lines of code for loading the driver and getting a connection
    from
    this pool
    i.e.
    Driver d = (Driver)Class.forName("weblogic.jdbc.pool.Driver").newInstance();
    Connection c = d.connect("jdbc:weblogic:pool:myPool", null);
    Again, you don't use the connection directly. Instead, you use "Data Source".
    Data source in weblogic is just a connection object factory associated with a
    JNDI name. You can therefore lookup the data source with the JNDI name and from
    the data source object, you get the connectin object. No need to explicitly load
    the driver class.
    There are plenty of example codes available in the weblogic examples installed
    with 6.1, that uses the data source.

  • OJ syntax for multi-table left outer join with MS Oracle Driver

    I have a multi-table left outer join that works fine in SQL Server ODBC Driver, Oracle ODBC driver 8.01.07.00, but not with Microsoft ODBC Driver for Oracle 2.573.7326.0
    SELECT * from { oj A LEFT OUTER JOIN B ON A.col1 = B.col1 LEFT OUTER JOIN C ON A.col1 = C.col1 }
    I noticed someone had a similar problem (the proposed solution doesn't work):
    http://www.justpbinfo.com/listarchive/msg02874.html
    Does anyone know how to get this working with the Microsoft ODBC Driver for Oracle? Or does it just not work?

    The Microsoft ODBC Driver for Oracle 2.573.7326.0 does perform the same 'fix up' with {oj} in Oracle 8i. The problem is that it doesn't work when joining more than two tables:
    This works:
    SELECT * from { oj A LEFT OUTER JOIN B ON A.col1 = B.col1}
    This doesn't work:
    SELECT * from { oj A LEFT OUTER JOIN B ON A.col1 = B.col1 LEFT OUTER JOIN C ON B.col1 = C.col1 }
    (The second query will work with the Oracle Oracle ODBC driver, with a bit of tweaking. But I haven't found a way to get it to work with the Microsoft ODBC Driver for Oracle 2.573.7326.0. My suspicion is that it just doesn't work.)

  • OCI mode of communication with the oracle server

    I would like to know the mechanism used by OCI dll to communicate with the oracle database server. I found that the oracle jdbc thin driver uses java sockets to connect to oracle.
    Any idea about the OCI driver?

    It uses whatever mechanism is specified in the TNSNAMES.ORA on the client, most commonly this is a TCP/IP connection to port 1521 on the server.

  • Performance problems using WLS6.1 with the thin driver for Ora9i from OTN

    Hello everyone,
    Has anyone been experimenting with the thin driver for Oracle 9i under WLS6.1. I got it running, but
    I get extremely bad performance when having multiple concurrent accesses. It works more or less in
    single user mode. Also it seems not to support XA transactions?
    When could we expect the driver from BEA to be out?

    I had done this from the very beginning, but I was still getting very bad performance under
    concurrent accesses. I even followed Sree's instructions and removed the old thin driver from
    weblogic.jar, but this didn't help. I am now trying to get the OCI driver for 9i running and hope
    this will solve the problem.

    For anyone picking up this thread (it's probably too late for rrebeiz40 by now!) I have come across a simple but apparently very effective tip that has solved the 'OpenGL driver lost connection' issue for many people using various NVIDIA with various Adobe progs (incidentally a lot of these seem to crop up on Dell machines, especially Notebooks).
    (It fixed my issue with Premiere Pro CS4 - GeForce GT 555M on Win 7 Ultimate 64-bit, Dell XPSL702X).
    It's posted on http://forum-archive.developer.nvidia.com/index.php?showtopic=5331&st=40 (look for the last post, No 50) as follows:
    THIS FIX APPEARS TO WORK...found on an Adobe forum
    "This issue led me to this fix: go to NVIDIA Control Panel --> Manage 3D Settings --> Global Settings, and switch "Power Management Mode" to "Prefer Maximum Performance" (the default "Adaptive" setting seemed to be the culprit). And that's it! The key here is changing the "Global" setting, as my individual programs were already set to "Prefer Maximum Performance." I can cause the error to reoccur by changing back to "Adaptive."
    Otherwise lots more ideas on this site: http://www.instructables.com/id/How-to-Fix...Nvlddmkm-Error/
    My PC has been running for 2 days now. I only put the top fix in for now. Feel happier I have more options if need be though.

    A erase of the drive or boot partition is not always necessary.
    Flashing question mark at boot could be a easy fix, sometimes it's the firmware that simply forgot what bootable volume to boot from.
    Try holding the Option key down while booting the machine, a choice of bootable options appears, select your OS X and boot up.
    When you get in, head to System Preferences > Startup disk and set it again new. This will tell the firmware what to boot from. Test it to see.
    Now if you don't have a selection of bootable options, it could be that the drive is dead, or OS X is erased or corrupted so it can't boot.
    You'll have to run through this list of fixes to see what's going on, if you need a hardware fix or what, I've also included links if you can't fix it and need to recover your data etc.
    (If it's not remmebering your boot selection then also run through the list to reset things.)

  • Discoverer Plus associate with the Oracle Application Server Infrastructure

    Hi Everyone,
    I just install the Oracle BI (v 10.1.2.0.2) into my 2003 server so I could use the Discoverer Plus and Viewer. This is a stand alone BI installation (I guess, I have little knowledge about Discoverer plus or Oracle AS).
    My question is how could I connect the Discoverer plus to my ODS database, so I could create report or view report.
    and where to find the Oracle Application Server Infrastructure (or How do I know I have the Oracle Application Server Infrastructure?)
    I read the Oracle BI Discoverer Configuration Guide, and it tell me to associate the Oracle BI with the Oracle Application Server Infrastructure to deploy the Discoverer. so I went to the BI Application Server Control page, the Infrastructure section, the Identity Management to configure the Internet Directory, so I could I have the public connection, but it didn't work.
    Also do I real need the Oracle AS Infrastructure to make the Discoverer Plus work?
    Thanks in advance

    Hi Kevin,
    Oracle AS Infrastructure is needed only if you are implementing SSO for Discoverer or using Public connection .
    Else only Oracle AS Middle tier is sufficient to work with Discoverer Plus .
    Regarding "how could I connect the Discoverer plus to my ODS database, so I could create report or view report"
    You need to create the End User Layer (EUL) and then grant privilege to the EUL to users who will be creating the report .
    Thanks,

    I was in a car collision and need proof of my location when I called 911. The Police Dept., refused to respond, since there were no injuries.
    Now, I have a dispute with the other driver who is falsely stating accident happened at another intersection. In addition of calling 911 twice, I also took pictures of damages. Unfortunately, I did not take pictures of the intersection signs.
    My AT&T carrier states that this info. can only be disclosed by a subpoena. My insurance carrier states that they will not subpoena this info., since it is a civil case only.
    The Police Department does not keep records of calls they do not attend to.
    How can I get this location  info. from my i phone device if at all possible?
    Thanks,

    Johnathan Burger,
    I did take photos of the damages to car and license plates, but NOT the intersection signs.
    How do I get the GPS Data in the exit data of photos? Please advise.
    Thanks,

    If your CDs are on your iPod/iPhone, they can be recovered from there,see this post:

    Your problem shows the importance of making backups.
