Setting Colors to window defaults, UI gets reset

Question

I created a Custom UI delegate for tabs to display the selected tab a certain color.
that color is the frame color, i.e. :
fillColor1 = UIManager.getColor("activeCaption");
so if you are using the windows OS and you set your active caption color to Dark Blue using the windows settings dialog (right click on the desktop and select properties, then choose the appearence tab) Then I want the selected tab color to change to that color as well. But when I change this color, my Custom UI gets wiped out and the BasicTabbedPaneUI becomes the UI available. Any suggestions? If you need more input or code, let me know.

I'm not sure why this happens, but why not just do a work-around:
    public Test() {
        JButton borderlessButton = new JButton("BorderlessButton")
            @Override
            protected void paintBorder(Graphics g)
                  //super.paintBorder(g);  // just prevent button from painting its own border
        //borderlessButton.setBorder(null);
