Setting dynamic text in tweened animation

I'd like to be able to dynamically control text in an
imported clip, where the artist has used shape tweening to animate
the text.
From my reading of the documentation, to do shape tweening of
text you have to convert it to objects which can no longer be
accessed as a text field. So clearly I can't do this directly. Is
there any trick or work-around that might help?
Like, could the text be left as a text field, then somehow,
the main application does the work of converting it to an object at
runtime so that it will work with the tweening? (That seems like a
pretty dubious prospect honestly, but it's all I can think
of...)

I appreciate your taking the time to help me and others on
this board. (I actually have another -- probably related question
-- that has never been answered, but that one is more confusing
because it involved multiple language support and worked *until* I
embedded the font.)
My understanding of Flash is definitely a mixed bag. I have
encountered so many problems (really quirks) with Flash that I kind
of start with the assumption that I'm dealing with something
quirky.
In this case, since I don't know your style, I just couldn't
see where you were going with your questions. In any case, thanks.
I'm smarter re Flash as a result of your help.

  • Setting dynamic text not working in AS2

    I'm working on a complex file given to me by another designer
    and I'm having a problem with being able to set dynamic text.
    Basically, I just want to set the text of a nested instance (e.g.,
    with an instance called foo and a instance inside foo called bar,
    I'm using foo.bar.text = "test".) This works beautifully and as
    expected in a test file. But when I move the symbols and code to
    the other designer's file, nothing happens. I.e., the dynamic text
    is blank.
    I feel confident that I'm not making any errors (I'm using
    tested code and symbols!), but I cannot think what else could be
    causing the error. Mine is the only ActionScript in the entire
    file.
    Are there bugs with dynamic text? Could this have to do with
    font substitution? I did change the fonts to Arial and "device
    fonts" without effect.
    Thanks!

  • Dynamic Text for data series ?

    Hi, is posible setting dynamic text in data series when use dynamic value ?
    We need show Actual Year value and Last Year value in Label for Series.
    Thank you.

    This is not possible unless you have enhancement pack 1 for visual composer which I think is still in rampup...
    Here is the enhancement noted in the article below.
    Taken from blog:
    Option to dynamically define element titles
    For chart views, form views, table views, HTML views, nested iViews and popup iViews (popup signal), you can now define dynamic titles using the Expression Editor. A new (ellipsis) button to the right of the field in the Configure Element task panel displays the Title Editor dialog box, in which you enter either or define a custom expression.

  • How can i set the dynamic text box to show variable value?

    In AS2, I can make a dynamic text box set a var name, when i
    use button set/change the var value, this textbox can show the
    value also.
    but In AS3, dynamic text box can't add var name. than how can
    i do it now?

    Set an instance name for the dynamic textfield. Then, to
    populate the textfield with the value of a variable, use:
    textFieldInstanceName.text = variableName

  • Tween changes dynamic text

    I have a dynamic text which is subject of a motion tween. Before the tween starts I assign it a new text value. Now I noticed that at both the first and last keyframe of the tween the text value is reset to its design time value. Is there a way to avoid this, so that it retains the newly assigned value?
    TIA
    Steven

    If you are tweening the textfield itself, you should find that it is now living inside a symbol (graphic) in your tween keyframes such that whatever code you assigned to the textfield before the tween doesn't affect the one that is involved with the tween.  Place the textfield inside a movielcip and tween the movieclip to get around this.

  • Button roll-over animation with dynamic text

    So I have a button I want to be able to use over and over. When you roll over the button, it does an animation and has a dynamic text box in it. Ovbiously im trying to make each text different for each button. What would be the smartest way to go about this? Thanks,
    Dan

    create a movieclip, put a stop() in frame one and add your "up" graphics, textfield etc put everything in its own layer.  create another keyframe on that timeline and label the frame "over" and add new keyframes only on the layers that will change.  ie, if the textfield doesn't change, don't put a keyframe on its layer.  likewise, for a "down" frame, if you want one.
    use instance names for everything in the movieclip that you want to control with actionscript.  ie, your textfield(s) will need instance name(s).  i usually use one textfield named tf.
    then use:
    btn1.tf.text = "test"
    btn1.addEventListener(MouseEvent.ROLL_OVER,overF);
    btn1.addEventListener(MouseEvent.ROLL_OUT,outF);
    btn1.addEventListener(MouseEvent.MOUSE_DOWN,downF);
    function overF(e:Event){
    // if you have another textfield here assign its text
    // likewise for other objects you want to change
    e.currentTarget.gotoAndStop("over");
    function outF(e:Event){
    // if you changed textfields in the other frames, reassign tf.text here
    e.currentTarget.gotoAndStop(1);
    function downF(e:Event){
    // if you have another textfield here assign its text
    e.currentTarget.gotoAndStop("down");

  • Dynamic text and animated masking problem?

    Hi
    Can anyone suggest to me what might be happening here. I will
    try and explain step by step... I am using flash MX
    I have dynamically created a movieclip which I want to mask -
    _root.createEmptyMovieClip("myMovie", 1);
    I dynamically add a movieclip into it which I then load a jpg
    into -
    _root.myMovie.createEmptyMovieClip("image1", 0);
    _root.myMovie.image1.createEmptyMovieClip("newFile", 0);
    _root.myMovie.image1.newFile.loadMovie("http:...");
    I dynamically create another movieclip called myNormalText1
    insde the first movie -
    _root.myMovie.createEmptyMovieClip("myNormalText1", 2);
    this holds a dynamically created text box called mytext -
    _root.myMovie.myNormalText1.createTextField("mytext",1,0,0,0,10);
    // the text box formating is dynamic, uses devise fonts,
    arial and is red ect.
    I have then attach a movieclip and use it as a mask to create
    a transition effect over _root.myMovie (which holds the image and
    text)
    _root.attachMovie("mask","mask",5);
    _root.myMovie.setMask("mask");
    the mask movieclip is what is causing me the problem!!!
    method one
    when the mask movieclip contains this -
    a phisically drawn box that fills the whole page
    I use a shape tween to make the box transform into a thin
    rectangle down the left hand side of the screen
    I get a transition effect which makes _root.mymovie disapear
    to the left which is what I want!
    The image and text are masked correctly!
    *** Please note I am aware that dynamic text boxes using
    devise fonts are not displayed correctly under a mask layor when
    they are not embeded, in flash MX. I am able to view my movie in a
    browser window which uses flash player 8 that now allows dynamic
    devise fonts to be masked!
    method two
    I then wanted to create a different transition effect like
    venitian blinds,
    so, in my mask movieclip I created several rectangles that
    fill the page
    again I used a shape tween so they get thinner,
    when I tested my movie the same way in the browser,
    the mask did not work correctly over my text in
    _root.mymovie???
    yet the image in _root.mymovie was masked correctly???
    the only differance between the two methods is the shape
    tween in method one uses one box shape, and the shape tween in
    method two uses several rectangler box shapes.
    I was wondering if anyone knows why the text is correctly
    masked in case one and is not correctly masked in case 2
    I want to do other transition effects using masks in this way
    and I am having no luck :-(
    Thanks for any advice
    Claire Wall

    Hi
    I have been researching this ALOT and found some info that
    basically tells me when I use setMask() over dynamic device fonts,
    the mask uses its bounding box (the rectangular outside edge of the
    whole mask movieclip) as the mask.
    In case 1 the mask moviclips bounding box shrinks when the
    shape tween plays because there is one rectangular box being
    tweened. It appears to mask the text correctly.
    In case 2 I have variouse different shape tweens going on
    inside the mask movieclip so the bounding box stays the same size
    across the whole screen and it wont appear to mask my text
    correctly.
    I think I have answered my own question, but this still
    leaves me stuck! I want to create this venitian blind effect using
    masks over devise fonts.
    I came up with the idea of using for example 4 different
    masks over the one movieclip but again flash doesnt like this and I
    guess I can only use one setMask() per movieclip?
    Can anyone suggest a way I can use multiple dynamically
    created masks on one movieclip or cant it be done?
    Thanks

  • Flash dynamic text in captivate errors

    Hello all,
    Has anyone experienced any issues when using a dynamic text
    field in flash, then importing the swf file into captivate? I am
    using actionscript to populate a few dynamic text fields in flash.
    I am then publishing the swf and importing the swf into captivate.
    Once I do this, none of my text appears! When I launch the swf in
    explorer and the flash authoring environment, it works fine. I have
    tried turning off the 508 compliance, eliminated all captivate
    animations/transitions, made sure that the frame rates are matched
    between flash / captivate (although not likely the prob), using a
    basic arial font Nothing works!!! anyone have any possible
    solutions? Here is a link to the swf that I am working with (tried

    Hi Deb
    This falls into that "odd" or "grey area" category and is
    likely the reason you haven't seen anyone reply. I say "odd" or
    "grey area", because you are now beyond the realm of pure Captivate
    behavior and have entered the realm of where you are now blending
    Captivate with other Flash output in an effort to try and achieve
    something unique. And there is absolutely nothing wrong with this.
    Personally, I would encourage it, as you never know what you will
    discover to create a neat effect.
    However, having said that, you are now dabbling in something
    that perhaps nobody else has yet tried. I'm no Flash expert just
    yet, but I'm beginning to work on those skills. From what I DO
    understand about blending Captivate with Flash, I believe Captivate
    only likes and easily works with
    Flash 6 output and
    Actionscript 1. Anything newer and it likely won't work. I'm
    unsure if Flash 6 output is even possible to create, where you can
    call an external text file. For all I know at this stage, it could
    be a Flash 7 or Flash 8 only feature.
    Assuming this was something that was part of the feature set
    for Flash 6, if you are using Flash 7 or 8 to create the Flash
    file, perhaps try publishing in the earlier format?
    Hopefully this helps... Rick

  • Dynamic text (Titles/Section titles)

    Hi,
    I'm diving into Keynote for the first time and am struggling with trying to figure out how to create dynamic text within my masters.
    I'd like to be able to have the user enter the title of the presentation on their title slide (using the title master) and then have that title propagate through the other slides in the footer of the section/content slides as meta data.
    Is there a solution for how to do this? Essentially, I just need to flag the text box with a variable and then repurpose that variable in a differently styled text box on other slides.
    Thanks in advance for any help!

    Keynote and PowerPoint are both presentation packages; however, they're not identical, and offer different feature sets. If you can't live without a feature that PPT offers but Keynote doesn't, use PPT. However, in my experience most of the things that PPT will do can be done in Keynote - it's just a matter of figuring out how.
    I've been using Keynote (various versions) for several years, after having used PPT for several years. Yes, I've found things that Keynote didn't do that I was used to being able to do in PPT, but the only one that I couldn't find a workaround for was motion-path animation, and it appeared as a Build option ("Action") in Keynote '08.
    If there is a feature you would like to see in Keynote, you can always use the "Provide Keynote Feedback" link in the "Keynote" menu to send you ideas to Apple. There's no guarantee that your feature will appear, but that's the way to let Apple know that you would like to see something changed.
    As for your original problem, one simple way to propogate the title information in the footers of the other slides is to add a small text box to the master(s) used for the other slides and copy the title into it. No, it's not automatic, and if you change the title you must also change the text box on the master(s), but it's a workaround.
    There is definitely a non-flat learning curve associated with the transition from PPT to Keynote, but once you pick up some familiarity with Keynote, you may find it's much more intuitive to use.

  • Issues with dynamic text box formatting

    I'm running into issues with using HTML formatting for a dymanic text field. I know these are quirky and I cannot figure out how to get the formatting proper.
    I have on my stage a dynamic text box called "content_txt" inside of a movie clip instance "content_mc". When it enters the frame, I fade the "content_mc" from alpha 0 to 100 using a timeline animation. In order for this to work, I have to embed the font in my "content_txt" text field. However, the only way I get get the HTML formatting to work is if I do not embed the font.
    The dymanic text field is set to render as HTML. In my actions layer, I set the text:
    this.content_mc.content_txt.htmlText = "<b>Hello world,</b> it is me again."
    In summary:
    1. If I do not embed the font, the alpha fade does not work but the HTML formatting does.
    2. If I embed the font, the alpha fade works but the HTML formatting does not.
    How do I resolve this? It's driving me nuts!

    How do you embed just one style?
    I've tried typing three words in the text field and formatting each (regular, bold, italic) but the text field just defaults to whichever format is first.
    Also, I tried embeding the whole character list and did not have success.

  • Can Dynamic Text Utilize Opacity?

    I did a search on this forum for "opacity dynamic text" and
    came up with nothing, so I apologize if this has been covered
    before.
    I have dynamic text boxes with scroll bars on a page. I made
    a Movie Clip of all of them and I am fading from 0 to 100 opacity
    in the timeline. When I scrub the timeline, it works. However, when
    I publish, the text doesn't fade in. The scroll bars do and the
    static text does, but none of the text boxes that are set to
    dynamic.
    I thought of fading a white rectangle (the background is
    white) from 100 to 0 on top of the dynamic text, but I have some
    animation going on in the background that would be covered as well.
    Anyone have any ideas?
    Thank you so much for your time.

    OK, I figured it out.
    You have to select the dynamic text, click on the Embed
    button, then click on Auto Fill, then click on OK.
    Embedding the dynamic text lets it fade in/out.
    Thanks, Scot! No problem, Scot.

  • Show inside dynamic text the title for multiple images on mouseover

    I have 25 animated movieclips dragged on the stage and they have similar instance names for easier manipulation purposes inside programming using loops. The instance names look like this: image0, image1, image2 and so on.
    Each time I go mouseover on one of these unique images I want to show the unique title of that image using for all titles just one dynamic text container named imageTitle.
    I have succeeded to make this work image by image but this would require me to copy paste and modify for each image the following code.
    image0.onRollOver = function() {
        imageTitle.text = "First image title";
        imageTitle.textColor = 0x000000; // setting the text color here
    image0.onRollOut = function() {
        imageTitle.text = "Choose an image";
        imageTitle.textColor = 0x000000;
    Question: The above code would work but seems redundant to me. Since I have similar instance names (image0, image1, ....,image24), how can I put this code inside a loop or something in order to work for all images without repeating this code 25 times.
    Update: I have added an array to the project that contains all the titles:
    var imagesTitles = new Array("First image title", "Second image title", .... );

    imageTitle.textColor=0x000000;
    for(var i:Number=0;i<imagesTitles.length;i++){
    this["image"+i].ivar = i;  // key step
    this["image"+i].onRollOver=function(){
    imageTitle.text = imagesTitles[this.ivar];  // key step used here
    this["image"+i].onRollOut=function(){
    imageTitle.text="Choose an image";

  • Dynamic Text can't be masked or blurred?

    Hi I have a dynamic textbox that has a scroller. I'm trying
    to tween it with some blur effect or put a mask on top of it but
    when I do it the text will not show at all. After changing the text
    type to static and the effect all worked fine.
    Is this the limitation of flash or is there a way to apply
    tween/blur/mask effect on dynamic text?

    Dynamic text can have anything done to it, just like static
    text. You just
    have to be sure to embed. Select a dynamic field, in the
    Properties Panel,
    click the Embed... button. Choose character sets to embed. I
    will normally
    use Uppercase, Lowercase, Numerals, and Punctuation.

  • Displaying the result of a calculation in a dynamic text box

    Hi folks,
    I'm having a very minor issue here (operator error, I'm sure ). With the help of some folks here, I've created a series of calculations, and I've got that part down. Now, I just need it to show up in the movie.
    I've created the dynamic text box in Flash (CS3), but when I hit test, it won't show up.
    After all the calculations, I should have a figure that I call totalmoney. My dynamic text box is called total. The user doesn't need to hit anything for it to appear. It just appears as part of the movie.
    Here's my code:
    stop();
    var startDate:Date = new Date(2010,0,12);  // use your  startyear, startmonth, startdate in the new Date() parameters.
    var  currentDate:Date = new Date();  // assuming user's clock is correct and in your  timezone.  else use server date/time.
    var numberOfSeconds:Number =  (currentDate.getTime()-startDate.getTime())/1000;
    var interest:Number =  (numberOfSeconds*0.74356);
    var totalmoney:Number =  (interest+15,000,000);
    function displaytotal(evt:TextEvent):void {
         total.text = "totalmoney";
    Any thoughts?
    Thanks!
    Napo

    You didn't have to bury any of the calculations in the function--leaving it as you had it is better.  They could remain where they a=werew, and you'll probably find you want them outside it if you have other plans for using them.  If left inside, they only have scope inside.  In the programming world, it's good to think of functions as things that do one thing and one thing only (though it isn't often practiced that way)--it's called modular design.
    When you place an event as an argument for a function, it typically means that there is an event listener that initiates the call to the function.  If you work with buttons you'll see what I mean.  But if the plan is to create your own call to a function when you desire it as such, not have it driven by an event listener, then you don't need to pass any event to it, though you may pass some other type of variable to it if need be.
    For instance, what you have now will call the function without an argument because the function has the value built into its code....
    displaytotal();
    But you could also make the function a little more generic and set it up to recieve the value instead as an argument...
    function displaytotal(amt:Number):void {
         total.text = String(amt); // an earlier error of mine
    displaytotal(totalmoney);
    That would make your function a little more useful.  Now it could be used to display other Number variables as well.
    // my earlier error was that a textfield displays text, so you need to convert the Number value to s String.
    Hope I'm not confusing you.
