Setting up a test server
I am totally new to dreamweaver i have always used golive and
with the new upgrade ended up with dreamweaver cs3
and i need to setup a test server to use xml with my site and
i am totally not getting it. i set up a test server it passed the
settings test connected to it but when i try to get schema from the
spry xlm data set i keep getting a failed to get schema from the
dynamic feed ( test.xml) please make sure the Testing server is
configured in the site definition,
i have a dedicated server that i used to work directly off of
but i am just not getting how to or why i need to setup a testing
server just to program something correctly.
any help would be great.
thanks
It is worth trying with Linux as well because a) you are more likely to be deploying Java systems on a unix based system and b) it is very useful for anyone serious about using computers to know how to use a unix shell.
The problem is that you are then learning to use the OS as well as picking up the servlet and jsp deployment skills. It is feasible though- I learned this way, but it can be frustrating at times. The other problem is that once you start getting anywhere with it you won't want to go back to windows again ever.
For development you may want to use Tomcat standalone rather than with Apache because you will not need the load balancing side so much and it does save on trying to configure mod_jk.
If you do go down this path I recommend the O'Reilly "Running Linux" book as a good introduction to the operating system. There is loads of stuff available online as well so it is very well supported.

Setting up a testing server in Dreamweaver for Java Development
Hey there,
I'm new to Java however, I'm look forward to learning I've been trying to set-up a testing server for Java on my local machine in Dreamweaver but am having some problems! Can anyone outline the steps required in order to do this. I'd really appreciate it.
I did follow the following link http://www.coderanch.com/forums/jforum?module=posts&action=insert&forum_id=33 and went through the troubleshooting section at the bottom. However my Java code does not display in Dreamweaver's 'Live View'

I've set up the *&*%$ testing server - now can I please add a recordset?
I run into this problem occasionally with DW. I set up an asp
site using aspVBscript. When I go to add server behaviors the
application box has the first two item s ticked (Create a site for
this file, and Choose a document type) but the third, "Set up the
site's testing server" is not, yet I have set up the testing server
(several times). It is the same testing server settings I use on
several of my other sites and they are fine. Why could DW be
insisting I have not set this up? I've tried closing down the app
and restarting, but it still thinks I have not entered the testing
server settings for the site and so won't let me add server
behaviors.
Anybody have any ideas why this is happening and what I could
do to fix?
BTW i'm using Dreamweaver CS3 on a windows XP pro SP2
machine. Windows 2003 IIS 6.0 server is where the site
resides. What happens when you browse to
http://localhost?
What happens when you browse to your site prefix as specified
in the testing
server setup?

How do you set up a Testing Server?
My Local and Remote settings have been working fine for years but
now I have the need to set up a Testing Server and I'm not sure
what to enter in the fields when editing my site. Attached are
my settings for Local, Remote and Testing. When I published to
the Testing Server this morning overwrote the Remote Server
and had to ask fat cow to restore my original site. Please advise.
Thanks.Your website is at http://bigcowmusic.com/. You want to use http://bigcowmusic.com/testing/ as your testing server.
Create a folder called testing in your site root.
In the Testing Server category of your site definition, set Host directory to point at the testing folder. Since you left that field blank before, it suggests that leaving it blank points to the site root. So enter "testing/" (without the quotes) into that field.
Set the URL prefix for the testing server to http://bigcowmusic.com/testing/.
To test that it's working, create a file in the testing folder, and make sure that you give it a name that doesn't already exist in your site (this will avoid overwriting a live page if anything goes wrong). Test it within Dreamweaver. Then go to your live site, and see if the page exists in the testing folder. If it is, you're set to go. -

Setting up local testing server
Hi,
I am in the process of setting up a local server to test web sites with AJAX calls, and am wondering what are some of the more common and easier tools/resources to use to do this...I have seen MAMP and XAMPP are very common...I recently up-graded to Yosemite so hopefully this will not be a problem to configure a local server...!?
Thanks very much for any direction or feedback.Ah. I see the problem. I will update that user tip when Yosemite is released. For now, you can try this:
Enable mod_userdir and include the configuration file
In the mod_userdir configuration file, include user-specific configuration files
In said user-specific configuration files, add new some stuff to make Apache 2.4 happy. Specifically, you will need:
Require all granted
because Apache just needs that now.
And you will need
AddLanguage en .en
LanguagePriority en fr de
ForceLanguagePriority Fallback
if you want to use Multiviews as per the User Tip.
After a sudo apachectl graceful, it should work.
However, I should caution anyone considering this that I haven't used Apache in some time. Things have progressed since I first wrote that user tip. These days, I would recommend using nginx, Tomcat, or Node. I also probably wouldn't even recommend using a Mac. Use Vagrant on your Mac instead and set everything up on Linux. Everyone, including Apple, uses Linux for servers these days. Plus, in today's world of security-enhanced Linux, you are going to have a mess trying to port something from a Mac to Linux. The resemblances are getting more and more superficial. You haven't lived until you have been screaming insults at selinux for hours on end. Even with Apple's recent drop in software quality (and I'm not the only one that says that), you aren't likely to scream insults at your Mac for more than 30 minutes or so until you figure out how to work around the latest bugset. With modern tools like selinux and Gradle, you aren't going to get anything done without reading a few hundred pages of manual first - assuming you can find the manual.
Bottom line - use your Mac to track down the documentation and read it, get Vagrant running, and just use Linux. -
Problems setting up testing server CS5 with existing PhP site copied to hard drive
A couple of years ago I dabbled in CS3 & PhP, but haven't touched it since 2009. I still have WAMP loaded on my machines. I'm now in a work situation where I was asked to see if I could make some simple copy updates to sites written in PhP. I copied the entire sites over to my hard drive, and placed them in the WAMP www root folder, and followed instructions to setting up the site in CS5 (which is pretty close to the CS3 setup). I made sure WAMP was running, and I'm still unable to connect. I am using "localhost" as part of the URL for the web server designation. I continue to get an "internal server error" message on these pages. I am able to, from my browser, type in "http:localhost" and it appears that WAMP is running properly. And I do remember to start WAMP before I start a DW session.
So, I kept experimenting. If I define a new PhP site and create a test document with simple PhP code, the connection to the testing server works and renders the code. It's just the existing PhP site I've copied over generates the Internal server message.
Is there something basic I'm not understanding about viewing and manipulating a PhP site created by someone else using DW CS5?The first question: on what platform? Windows - Mac?
I only succeeded in setting up a testing server on my Mac
with PHP and MySQL after reading a book of David Powers. On Leopard
I belief there still are problems connecting PHP to MySQL. -
Will not set up testing server
I have done this in the past many times. Recently DW 8 will
not set up a testing server when I chose local network.
I am running Windows XP Pro, version 5.1, Service Pack 2.
This is driving me crazy.
Any help.
Also, I can figure out how to call and pay Macromedia for
help with this. Any advice on that.
Thanks.> Testing server folder points to a folder.
> URL is
http://localhost
Actually, the path to the testing server would usually be
like -
c:\inetpub\wwwroot
And usually, you would want your testing server to point to a
FOLDER within
the webserver's root, e.g.,
c:\inetpub\wwwroot\folder
Use a different folder for each site so that you don't get
all your site's
files jumbled up in the webserver's root folder.
Then you would want to specify a URL prefix for your site of
http://localhost/folder
So -
Server Model: ASP VBScript
Access: Local/Network
Testing server folder: c:\inetpub\wwwroot\folder
URL Prefix:
http://localhost/folder
Is that how you have it?

first day notes:
I've spent the last two days transitioning into Dreamweaver and setting up my test server MySQL PHP and Apache by following online help, tutorials and recommendations. I've Terminaled MAMPed, and installed more crap than I wanted to fill my hard drive with. I've done everything I can think of just so I can see what the site I'm working on will look like in reality (using Server Side Includes) before posting as I'm still in the proposal stages of this project.
All files are relative to the document and not root
preview using temporary file is checked
Testing Server folder is: MacintoshHD:Library:WebServer:Documents:sitename
Testing Server URL Prefix is: http://127.0.0.1/sitename.com/
FF and Safari give me:
Not Found
The requested URL /MarcJanowitz.com/TMPV8Y2WAUZU.shtml was not found on this server.
I'm used to iWeb but it clearly doesn't have the functionality I need, which is why I'm trying to graduate. I can't use DW if I can't see what i'm creating. I can't rely on faith when I don't have the experience with this program to have the faith.
I've been all over google and the forums since 5pm yesterday (short nap in the middle) and it looks like i'm doing everything I'm told.
I'm afraid I did something in terminal I shouldn't have or something slightly wrong in my installation/implementation of MySQL PHP and Apache. Or that i'm misunderstanding what I'm supposed to be putting in for "Testing Server URL Prefix" or something. I need to find out asap whether this is a lost cause or fixable so I know whether to cut my losses.
the next day i tried:
apache is set to run by setting my web sharing on
i changed the line that said 127.0.0.1 in my config.inc.php. back to localhost so i could try
Try: http://localhost/sitename.com
I'd switched because i was getting "Re: #2002 - The server is not responding (or the local MySQL server's socket is not correctly configured)" and I found these:
MySQL :: Re: #2002 - The server is not responding (or the local MySQL server's socket is not correctly configured)
MySQL :: <<< THE SOLUTION - SOLUTION SUMMARY >>> <<< READ THIS FIRST >>>
now that i look at those pages again, perhaps just switching 127.0.0.1 back to local host in both places isn't enough
i've sort of lost track of the changes i've made now
I switched the line in manage sites to lowercase to match the folder
PHP and MySQL were running last night before i shut down. How do I make sure they're running now that i've started up again?
as of now, still getting "not found"
I know there are similar topics but i'm certain i've gotten myself in a unique enough situation that it is worth a new discussion because i can't find one close enough to what i've done
thanks!Diana Kesselschmidt wrote:
3)don't know where you mean when you say:
simply declare those ports in the call... i.e. localhost:8889 for mysql and to see the website localhost:8888
I explained this before. If you use the default MAMP ports, you need to use http://localhost:8888/ instead of http://locahost/ in the URL prefix of the Testing server definition. Also, when creating a MySQL connection, use localhost:8889 instead of localhost in the Server field.
If you have stopped the preinstalled version of Apache in System Preferences, as well as stopping the version of MySQL that you installed from a dmg, you can change the ports in MAMP. See the following screenshot, which is taken from the tutorial on setting up a PHP development environment:
The screenshot shows the default MAMP ports. If you click the "Set to default Apache and MySQL ports" button, those values will change to 80 and 3306 respectively. If you do that, and you get a green light from both MySQL and Apache, you can use http://localhost/ and localhost in the testing server and MySQL connection dialog boxes.
If you still get errors when trying to test a page in Dreamweaver, please give precise details of the values you have entered in the Testing server folder and URL prefix fields of the Testing Server section of the Site Definition dialog box. -
Errors when trying to set up testing server in CS3
Hi,
Ive tried to find the answer to this by googling, but cant
sort it out.
Ive been setting up php/apache/mysql in windows vista -
dwcs3.
Please bear in mind that I am very wet behind the ears with
all this , at
the moment.
Ive been working out of Davids Essentials - CS3 ver. book.
All was going
well. I tested php with the test.php page that was in the
book download.
Tested Apache - got the "It worked" page.
Ive got the Apache symbol in the bottom tray, with the little
green arrow in
the feather.
So far so - so good.
Then I set up the testing server stuff for dreamweaver. Used
the server
root .
Did everything - so I thought - by the instructions.
Tested a php page, by clicking on "live data view" in DW -
then got the
"Forbidden. You dont have permission to access
/php_testing/datatest_40uvgbduqp.php on this server"
Im lost at this point. I searched google, but cant really get
an answer to
it there, there was some stuff about changing permissions,
but Im not really
sure how to do this with a local site. and php/apache seemed
to be working
before setting up the testing server in DW.
Also, when I go to my browser and browse to
localhost/test.php or whatever,
it tells me it cant display the page, cos Im not logged in.
Any help, would be wonderful.
REgards
FionaAfter one headache, more googling, and hours of scanning the
apache
configuration file, I think I found it.
I had changed the root folder from the standard
C:/programfiles/apache..../etc to D:/htdocs but the
configuration file in
Apache was still showing the original root folder path.
Just for interest sake, if I did have to change the
permissions on files
that were just on my local computer, how do you do that, or
should I ever
need to do that?
Regards
Fiona

Issue with Setting Up Test Server for PHP/MySQL to work
I've got a few newbie issues
which I hope someone can help with!
I'm trying to get Security Assist to work, so I've put MYSQL and workbench on my computer to get it going. I haven't created a test server in PHP, because I'm wondering if it will affect my already running website ftp? Will it take down my company website if I create a test server with the same ftp as my website?
So, I created a model in workbench (table) and I've tried to connect mysql to dreamweaver. I keep getting an error when I try to connect!
Despite the error saying an error has occurred..I have something which looks like a plus (+) sitting in my database area on DW, but it says there's no tables there! And in mysql there is a table!
I'm a bit bloody lost to tell you the truth. Just changing the password on mysql to get going was horrendous.
Anybody have a solution to get me going, so that my tables are sitting nicely in my dW and can be connected to my SA (Security Assist).
Ugh!The first question: on what platform? Windows - Mac?
I only succeeded in setting up a testing server on my Mac

How to see html code in a php file using CS5.5 without using testing server?
In CS5.5 when I open a page with php extention, DW does not show any html code in design view without me having to set up a testing server. In DW 8 it would open the same files and show me the html in design view. I have no need to test php code, I just need to alter the html. Is there a setting I can change to enable this in CS5.5? Thanks.
Below is the code. I discovered that if I create a new php document not from
a template, then I can see the html elements in design view. If I create a
new page from a template and save it as html, design view still works, but
if I save a new page from template and save it as php, I only see symbols
for php and nothing else in design view.
Thanks for your help on this.

/* ~~ These are the columns for the layout. ~~
1) Padding is only placed on the top and/or bottom of the divs. The elements
within these divs have padding on their sides. This saves you from any "box
model math". Keep in mind, if you add any side padding or border to the div
itself, it will be added to the width you define to create the *total*
width. You may also choose to remove the padding on the element in the div
and place a second div within it with no width and the padding necessary for
your design.
2) No margin has been given to the columns since they are all floated. If
you must add margin, avoid placing it on the side you're floating toward
(for example: a right margin on a div set to float right). Many times,
padding can be used instead. For divs where this rule must be broken, you
should add a "display:inline" declaration to the div's rule to tame a bug
where some versions of Internet Explorer double the margin.
3) Since classes can be used multiple times in a document (and an element
can also have multiple classes applied), the columns have been assigned
class names instead of IDs. For example, two sidebar divs could be stacked
if necessary. These can very easily be changed to IDs if that's your
preference, as long as you'll only be using them once per document.
4) If you prefer your nav on the right instead of the left, simply float
these columns the opposite direction (all right instead of all left) and
they'll render in reverse order. There's no need to move the divs around in
the HTML source.
