Setting up File Sharing

I'm running OS 10.5.8. I have a new Grace Internet Radio and I want to play songs or playlists from my Itunes on it. The directions for the radio say to open Sys. Pref. > Internet & Network > the Services section. Then, it says to enable "Personal File Sharing" and "Windows Sharing" and click start for each.
I don't see either of these on the list of services. Anyone have experience with how to set this up? Customer support at Grace couldn't help with an Apple!

Welcome to  Discussions!
Under Internet & Network you should be clicking the Sharing icon, then click File Sharing, then click the Options button you see at lower right. In the dialog that comes up, you need to check the box marked "Share files and folders using SMB".
The instructions included are for versions of OS X previous to Leopard. If you contact their (Grace's) support again, you might want to let them know.

  • Having trouble setting up file sharing through Airport Extreme

Hi, I am trying to set up file sharing on my USB hard drive through the Airport Extreme, on my HP laptop with Windows XP. I went through the steps in manual setup in Airport Utilities, and my hard drive shows up under the Disk Utility in the Airport Utilities, but the problem is that I cannot figure out a way to find the hard drive from Windows XP. Should it show up in My Computer? I've spent a few hours trying to figure it out and I am close to giving up. If anyone can help me solve this problem, I'd really appreciate it!!!

I have this issue, too. Did you find a solution since you first posted?

  • How do I set up file sharing in Lion Server to work like file sharing in Lion Client?

I've just installed Lion Server on my home iMac to enable remote access via VPN to my home network.
When the iMac was running Lion Client (before the upgrade to server), and when File Sharing was enabled on the iMac; when other Macs on the LAN connected to the iMac via AFP, they were always able to connect to (share) any mounted external volumes (external USB or FireWire drives connected to the iMac). e.g.
Now that I've upgraded to Lion Server, when other Macs on the LAN connected to the iMac via AFP they are only able to connect to (share) the sharepoints listed in the File Sharing pane of Server.app. e.g.
Is there any way to set up File Sharing in Lion Server so that it works the same way as it does in Lion Client with respect to mounted external volumes? i.e. they are automatically shared? I know I can add each volume manually to File Sharing in Server.app but this gets tedious.
    Many thanks!

I normally have a Firewall enabled. I recently had to do an erase and install of Lion, followed by a one-by-one re-install of all of my software. One of the first things I did was to set up all of my System Preferences the way I like them; Turning the Firewall on was one of them. Later I noticed it was off and turned it on again. I had already set up sharing and was surprised to see the problem when I turned it back on.
As to why do I think it needs to be on. It is another part of my security layer.

  • How do I set up file sharing to keep my Quicken and Aperture files accessible and in synch across my network?

I have a gigabyte ethernet network connecting my home and workshop.  I have an iMac (mid-2009 and late-2012) at each location running Mountain Lion and Windows 7 Home Premium under Parallels 8.  I want to be able to access my Quicken (for Windows), Office (for Mac) and photo (Aperture and iPhoto for Mac) files from either location and keep the files in synch.  How do I set up File Sharing to accomplish this and what process should I use when updating and saving changes?

    Use SugarSync.

  • How do I set up file sharing and keep my Firewall on?

When I turned my Firewall on, I lost the ability to share files and screens on my LAN. When I looked at the advanced settings, I saw that File Sharing, Screen Sharing and Web Sharing were already set to Allow incoming connections but other, related, services, AppleFileServer, httpd, kdc, netbiosd, and screensharingd were set to block incoming connections. I reset the latter to allow incoming connections but was still unable to access my computer from another. Once I turned off the Firewall, I was able to access file sharing and screensharing from another computer on my LAN.
I have a firewall built into my external router so I have some protection but I still feel uncomfortable with the Firewall on my computer turned off.
When my firewall is on even with setting up to allow incoming connections, there are lots of console messages like:
1/8/12 3:00:00.882 PM Firewall: Deny netbiosd data in from 192.168.1.2:51619 to port 137 proto=17
They go away as soon as I turn off the firewall.
I did not find the Apple technical article "Set firewall access for services and applications" at http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?path=Mac/10.7/en/mh18503.html useful at all.
Any ideas as to what is wrong?

  • How do I set up file sharing between iMAC and MacBook Pro?

I am unable to use "file sharing".  When trying to connect as a "registered user" it asks for my server password.  What is that?  I have tried every password I think it could be.  I also can not connect as "using an Apple ID"

You can set up "iCloud" on all of them and select there to sync your Documents.  You must be running Mountain Lion on the MBA and iOS 6 on the iPhone and iPad in order to use iCloud:

  • Setting up file sharing between two Macs

Just bought a new MBP. My wife will use the old MBP. Both running 10.9.4
Hers shows under ‘Shared’ in my Finder & mine in hers.
On clicking ‘Connect As’ from either laptop we are asked for a password.
I must be overlooking something basic, but for the life of me cannot work out how to set the password.
I have been into System Preferences/Sharing preferences & tried to add her as a user  & vice versa. I can add each of us to the other’s list of users, but when either of us tries to connect & are prompted to enter a password, the password is rejected. Like wise if I go into File sharing ‘Options’, & find the user name in the account list (only he & me) on hers I am unticked & on mine she is unticked.
When I tick either box I am prompted again to enter a password (for SMB). Again on entering the password it is rejected.
    What am I doing wrong?
    Thanks.

MrHoffman, by ‘log directly’ do you mean can I sit at my wife’s (or my) mac, type in the login passwords at the login screens & gain access? If so the answer is yes.
These are the same passwords I have been trying to use to log in to file sharing from the connect as box in Finder.  Same result both ways. Password rejected/password input box shakes.
    Yep.  That was the test.
Launch Console.app from Applications > Utilities on the target Mac, and then see if there are any messages logged when the incoming Finder connection to that target Mac fails.  (Please don't post more than a dozen or two lines and definitely please don't dump hundreds of lines of console output here.  Remove repeating blocks, and — if you do post that data here — please check for any confidential or sensitive information before posting it.)
Also, if there are any add-on "anti-malware" or "anti-virus" tools, or I/O "enhancement" tools, or tools that claim to "optimize", "protect", "clean" or "tweak" your Mac, please remove all of those.   Use the tool-specific procedures to remove those.  If you're not sure, download and run and post the output from Etrecheck, and we'll have a look at the software configuration.  (Etrecheck also tries not to display anything sensitive, but do review that output before posting it here.)

  • NOOB trying to set up file sharing on Mac Pro.  How do I do it???

I've just unboxed a new Mac Pro that has OS X Server installed on it and I'm trying to figure out how to set it up as a file server. It has 2 TB (4x 500 GB) of hard disc storage that I want to make available to two other work stations.
The three macines are already networked via an Airport and are sharing internet, etc. I've been able to set up AppleTalk, but that only shares public folders. I'm trying to set up the more advanced sharing features offered by Server.
I've been scouring the help section of OS X and here on apple.com and so far haven't been able to figure it out. Can anyone out there be so kind as to give me some tips or at least point me in the right direction? Thanks.

    Pretty broad question.
In summary, you use the Sharing panel of Workgroup Manager to create a sharepoint, and to set the permissions for your users. You can read all about it in the File Services Administration manual, which is part of Apple's documentation:
    http://www.apple.com/server/documentation/
If you have a specific issue that you're running into, post again and I'm sure you'll get the help you need.

  • How to set up file sharing in Snow Leopard Server?

Apple had SLS for just about free when I needed SL, regular SL not yet then, so I grabbed it. I have been using it for quite some time for legacy applications and never needed to move files to that machine over the network. Tonight I needed to and noticed I could only do screen sharing. I went the control panel and there is no settings to do it. Can anyone tell me how to "turn it on". Can it be?

  • File sharing across a network --- Mac (Leopard) and PCs (Vista) -- problems

Been trying to setup file sharing so that I can access an iMac from a Vista PC. Followed various help threads, and have a specific question as relates to setting the file sharing preferences. From system preferences/sharing, have checked "File Sharing", and the shared folders displayed are the default public ones for the two users of the iMac. That is what I want. I next click on the options button in the same sharing window, where "Share files and folders using AFP" is already turned on (checked). From the data I have read, I next try to set up sharing using SMB, checking on that option (cause I think I must do that - from what I've read).
This is where I run into problems. If I just check for share files and folders using SMB, and don't check off on the individual user accounts, when I try to access the iMac from the Vista PC, I get a login dialog box when I click on the iMac in my network screen. Not sure what to do with that ... _as I only want guest access to the public folders on the iMac_. If, however, in setting up SMB I check on the individual user accounts (and provide the requested passwords), then when I access the iMac from the Vista PC, I don't have to login to the iMac at all .... but all folders/all iMac hard drive data is now available/editable to me. This is not what I want. Only want network access to the iMac public folders. But as I noted earlier, if I set up SMB without checking off on the user account names, then I am presented with a login box when I click on the iMac icon on the Vista PC.
Have read numerous articles on this ... and think I am close. So ... bottom line ... want iMac access from Vista PCs but only want access to the iMac public folders. Don't want access to the entire iMac hard drive.
    Any thoughts/suggestions? Thanks.

Some additional insight to share. Some successes, but still some questions.
Was reading around the web on this topic and found something that indicated that I should create a new, non-admin account on the iMac and make that the user that is shared. The other two users that I was attempting to share the public folder were both admin users, and this may account for showing all of the hard drive when I accessed the iMac from the Vista PC.
So I created this new "standard" user account, and share that public folder, and it all works. Now here is the still questionable. From one vista PC, when I click on the iMac I get a login prompt. At that point I can log into the iMac or just access the iMac via guest access. Both work.
But from a different Vista PC, clicking on the iMac does not prompt a login shell to appear. I just walk into the iMac shared folder. Do not understand this behavior. Would've expected that any Vista or windows PC would get a login shell when trying to access the iMac. That is not the case. Any thoughts why the 2 Vista PCs behave differently?
