Setting up first Leopard Mail Server

Hi All,
I have nearly got there but still confused on the last hurdle!
I have set everything up server side, now when I try to setup client machine with the IMAP mail it is hitting the server and in the mail logs showing a connection is being made BUT giving this error : AOD : authentication error : cannot find user : [email protected] (0)
I have setup my account in OD and enabled mail with all relevant settings. in the info tab I have put a few diff emails I want that user to have (admin@, info@ etc) Is this correct or do I setup the users email accounts elsewhere?
Thanks in advance

OK setup a new user in WGM and account sends mail ;))
BUT when I mail to the new account it now states- Reason: Illegal host/domain name found
Is this my DNS?? I am using the FQDN as my SMTP, is this correct?

  • Setting up Leopard Mail Server to access external pop mail accounts

First I don't know if this is possible, after a few hours trying I am not really sure if I am doing this right.
I really just want to have my Leopard Mail server pull any new mail from my web hosting company mail servers that host my domain (samplename.com as an example). My domain is hosted by a web hosting company as part of my website package. I don't really want to stop having the web hosting company host my mail portion. (kinda of a backup mail server of sorts?)
My Leopard mail server is called leopardserver.local and not my domain name (samplename.com). As I am afraid if I call my Leopard server by my domain name (samplename.com) it will stop letting me access my domain name (samplename.com) from my other Macs. Also possibly adding in to pull from my secondary domain name's mail server, and a gmail.com server later.
I am trying to avoid to creating the MX records, etc. if possible. Will my idea work?

Thank you pterobyte. This process was much simpler that I thought. After searching on these forums and finding the syntax for the .fetchmailrc file, I found on a website how to change the permissions for the .fetchmailrc file. This is now working when I log in as me and start it up - I will look at making it run from root later when I have more time.
I do have a question now related to the flip side - sending mail from my server. When I send mail from my server using the webmail piece or the Mail app on the server I received this message:
    <[email protected]>;;: host smtp-server.mycableisp.com[00.00.000.000] said: 553 5.1.8
<[email protected]>;;... Domain of sender address [email protected]
does not exist (in reply to MAIL FROM command)
To fix this I put in the Reply-To a different valid account like [email protected] - this suppresses the error, but my mail is not going anywhere. The recipient does not get the message that was sent.
    1. How can I fix this so my mail flows out and gets delivered?
    2. If I change the server name to something like domainname.net, would this fix #1?
Here is the interesting part - If I create the message in Mail.app that has a From field (not webmail - which I will be using 99% of the time) everything flows through the mail server and gets delivered.
My logs are empty in the Server Admin utility.
I appreciate being able to learn more about this.

  • Leopard Mail Server and DynDNS (Newbie)

I don't have a static IP but have an account with DynDNS. I have AFP, Firewall, Web, and VPN enabled. All those services are working perfectly. I am now trying to setup mail.
I have opened the required ports, enabled mail, and configured mail via the "Configure Mail Service" button in overview. POP and IMAP are enabled. SMTP is enabled to allow incoming Mail. Accept SMTP relay is checked to accepts relays from 127.0.0.0/8 and 192.168.3.0/24.
I have setup an account in Workgroup Manager with mail enabled.
Using Mac OS X Mail, I have setup the POP account and it is recognized (at least for incoming). However, when I try to send mail to that account, I receive Deliver Failed notification - Reason: Remote SMTP server has rejected address. There is also something about a diagnostic code and relay access being denied.
Don't really know where to go from here. I have set up the MX record through DynDNS - mail.mydomain.com

Before you go too far, where you you going (or hoping to go) with this?
If you're planning on running your own domain's email you might as well stop right now. For the most part you can't run a reliable mail service on a dynamic IP address. For one, most major ISPs are going to reject your mail as coming from a dynamic IP address. A large portion of ISPs will also reject your mail since the reverse lookup of your server's IP address doesn't match your domain.
If you're just running your own mail to/from your own users you might be OK, but if you're trying to email other domains it just isn't going to work.
You might have more luck if you relay your mail through your ISP's mail server - that may overcome some of the limitations but for truly reliable email delivery you need a static IP address.
Now, that said, in order for anyone to troubleshoot your problem (assuming it's more than just a dynamic IP address issue) you're going to have to reveal your domain name. That way people can lookup what the DNS world knows about your domain, test it, and see what the actual failure notices look like.
The failure message is critical. It will give a specific reason and that reason will go a long way to identifying the problem. Just saying there is some 'diagnostic code' doesn't help much.

  • Help with setting up a basic mail server for Notes sync

    Hello,
I have managed to setup a CalDAV and CardDAV server for local syncing of my iOS devices with Mavericks via Mavericks Server.
I wish to also sync notes.
I understand a mail server is required and I have been trying to set one up solely for notes sync.
After turning on the mail server I can sync notes to the server on my Mac but I cant figure out how to do it on the iOS devices.
Is it possible to setup a local mail server?
Can someone provide me with a basic guide?
    Thanks

    Thanks for reply Simon.
I havent been able to find a guide so I have been guessing trying to setup the email server. Basically ive tried to setup a user email [email protected] (syncuser is also the account I use to sync my calendar and contacts)
I have turned on the mail server, made a new account on my Mac in mail:
    Description: OS X Server
    Email Address: [email protected]
    Full Name: syncuser
    Incoming Mail Server: myserver.local
    User Name: syncuser
In the user account  I have added the email address.
Im guesing I have to make the mail account somewhere in the server settings but I cant find anything. If turn off SSL in the mail settings I at least get a response from the server:
    Unable to Connect
There may be a problem with the mail server or network. Verify the settings for account “OS X Server” or try again.
The server returned the error: The connection to the server “myserver.local” on port 143 failed (error 49: Can't assign requested address)

  • After upgrading to Lion from Snow Leopard, mail server does not receive incoming email

After upgrading my server last night [2011.07.20] from Snow Leopard to Lion, my mail server settings went belly up.  After toying around with the server, its certificates and what-not, I was able to get it running, but it is no longer receiving any emails [neither internally nor from Gmail, Yahoo, etc.].
I can send emails via SMTP just fine [using SSL] to external email accounts [and it doesn't complain when I address an email to an internal email account, but I can't verify that it's sending it to the internal email account because it won't receive!].
The Connection Doctor says that it is indeed connecting properly to the server [incoming = IMAP, outgoing = SMTP], so there is communication between Mail 5.0 [and also Thunderbird as well] and the mail server.  The problem appears to be the mail server not receiving any emails - from internal or external addresses.
Anyone else having this problem or know of a fix for it?
    Thanks!

Did you find a solution to this issue?  My mail server is doing the same thing.  I've tried six migrations now, and have a couple of tickets open, but they all have issues.  I have worked around all of them except the mail server problem.
I did some more digging; the problem appears to be that on a migrated server, it leaves all of your mail store in the old location, doesn't move it, and then doesn't appear to upgrade spam-assassin properly.  The net effect is that the mail server gets the SMTP communication, tries to pass the message into spam assassin, and then it goes south.
I see errors like this littered in the logs:
Jul 31 13:53:10 mail org.amavis.amavisd[5927]: bayes: cannot open bayes databases /var/amavis/.spamassassin/bayes_* R/O: tie failed:
Jul 31 13:53:10 mail org.amavis.amavisd[5927]: bayes: cannot open bayes databases /var/amavis/.spamassassin/bayes_* R/O: tie failed: No such file or directory

  • Cannot set up an Incoming Mail Server

I am trying to set up Aliases but when I get to the Incoming Mail Server field in Mail Preferences it is greyed out with "mail.example.com" and if I alter any other field and then try to save that account I get a message "Incoming Mail Server field cannot be empty".  How can I get the Incoming Mail Server field to highlight so I can insert something and what do I put in?

Yes that is what I was doing.  I am confused because initially I thought I had completed the process in Safari iCloiud but the the Aliase email address didn't show uo when I composed message and wanted to send it from that address and not the default.  I added the Aliase in Mail>Preferences>Accounts>Add new account and sent an email but looking at the inbox in Mail there is a "lightening" symbol and clicking on that and entering the password comes up with the message "Mail cannot conect to the account (aliase address)".  When I wnt back to Preferences that is when I realised that the form wasn't completed.  Since I started this thread I have received a reply to my earlier email using the Aliase address and sent a reply to that but the lightening symol still remains.  Any ideas?

  • IMAP emails disappearing from Snow Leopard Mail Server

I run IT for a publishing company with about 75 IMAP accounts on my 10.6.8 Snow Leopard Server running mail services. I received a call two days ago from a user claiming that his 7000 mails have vanished from his mail application. When I checked his account through webmail all his emails were gone yet none were in the deleted mail mailbox. Being daring I went into my backups and copied all of the that user's email for the following location from the server backup /private/var/spool/imap/dovecot/mail. Once I put the mail back everything seemed great but shortly after the emails began disappearing again. At a rate of about 100 every few minutes. Not much later all 7000 emails were gone again. I repeated this procedure several times with the same result. I since have had him access as a POP account so that as a temporary fix the email would reside on his Mac and not vanish. But I still can't figure out why this is happening. Any ideas or thoughts would be extremely appreciated.
    Thanks,
    Tom Beausoleil

  • Download email from External Postfix Server to Leopard Mail Server?

Any pointers to specific articles, much appreciated.
We presently have our website and mail servers (postfix) hosted on surftown, which has squirrelmail for webmail.
We do not have a static IP and use dyndns.
The domain on surftown is xxxx.com
We also run an intranet with a couple of Leopard Servers behind a VPN,with our own local DNS on intranet.xxxx.com
I would like to take the emailserver inside the VPN and onto a Leopard Server, but leave the website on surftown.
Is it possible to have postfix on a Leopard Server log onto the postfix server at surftown and draw the email off?
Users would then access their email via the Leopard Server.
If they are in the office LAN or in a satellite office connected VPN, then they will use POP/IMAP within Mail.
If they are outside the VPN they can use Webmail via a logon with a Netgear SSL312.
Does anyone have any experience of using the Leopard Server postfix to tap an external postfix service? It would certainly be cheaper than paying DynDNS to do a mailhop and trap.

Look for discussions of [imapsync|http://freshmeat.net/projects/imapsync> as one potential starting point for your quest and as keyword fodder for your searches.
This is usually one of two general classes of problem. Presuming this is a technical limitation out at your ISP (eg: they don't "do" static addresses) and not a budget-targetting effort (implying that you probably won't want to spend on a tunnel), setting up an IPv6 tunnel over IPv4 might be an alternative.

  • Troubles setting up a virtual mail server

    Hi,
I'm having trouble setting up my email server. It has an Domain name (eg. ftp8.mydomain.com) but not really a Host Name. I guess you could use the same as above (ftp8.mydomain.com), no?
Next, enabled virtual hosting and enter a few domains (eg. thisdomain.com, thatdomain.net, yourdomain.org). I created 3 accounts, 1 for each, for now.
Ran some test. I can send out to other email accounts not on this server. I can send and receive to the same machine (eg. [email protected] to [email protected]).
But I can't receive email from accounts not on this machine.
    What's missing?
    Thanks for any help.
    Frank

    Frank,
    The MX for sofa.on.ca is (sofa.on.ca. 86400 IN MX 1 mail2.dpimac.com.)
The MX record resolves to 216.183.93.88 (mail2.dpimac.com. 86400 IN A 216.183.93.88) which appears to be an OSXS machine. It's running Apache 1.3 -- is this a Tiger or Leopard server?
May I suggest you take a look at this -- maybe it can help you: http://rduonline.com/notes.mgi
Look through the section on setting up VH mail accounts in the SA -- this is where most folks make mistakes.

  • Setting the default outgoing mail server

I have multiple email accounts with multiple ISPs. Because I've recently changed ISPs, I'd like my default return address to be a different address than it was before. Is there a way to set the default return address and default outgoing server?

As already provided, this is done by account - via Mail > Preferences > Accounts under the Account Information tab for the account preferences is where you select the SMTP server for the account, and below is an option to always use the selected server for an account. This must be done for each account.
Regarding your default return address when sending a message with an account, there is no default selection for this for all accounts. This must be changed by account just as with the SMTP server for each account.
This is also done under the Account Information tab for the account preferences. What is entered in the Email Address field and Full Name field is what appears as the sending email address and name when sending with an account. The problem is, some email account providers restrict using a different email address to appear as the sending email address for an account - especially when the account has an authenticated SMTP server.
The Mail.app includes a Reply To: field for the message header for send messages - for entering a different Reply To: email address when sending with an account with a different email address, but there is not an option to have a designated email address always appear and be sent as a default Reply To: email address.

  • Problems with setting up my ISP's mail server in Windows Live Mail and Thunderbird

The laptop is a G60-535DX with Windows 7  64 bit. I've managed to setup my gmail account fine in Live Mail, but when setting  up my ISP' mail server, it doesn't work. I get the message that the information was entered correctly, and I see the 'connecting' at the bottom of the page, and then 'error', and clicking on it shows a socket error #10061. In Thunderbird, I get a timeout error message. I've entered all the incoming and outgoing server information correctly, (I've done this over 8-9 times now), the ports are the defaults(110,25), no SSL, no authentication. I've talked with my ISP several times. Just a couple of hours ago was the last time. Their only other possibilities were that Live Mail had problems with setting up more than one account, that Live Mail needed updating, that Windows 7 was a new operating system and there were 'kinks'. I removed the gmail account, set up the ISP's mail by itself; didn't help. I checked for Live Mail updates, but found out that they all come from Windows updates(which are current).  The folks on PCQ&A inform me that they have 3 or 4 accounts with Live Mail. I can get my mail, by logging onto my ISP's website, but that' kind of a nuisance. I posted this in Seven Forums and they didn't have any ideas. As I said, I also can't get my mail server to work in Thunderbird, either.  I don't know what else to try. (short of activating the recovery partition and starting from scratch). Any ideas would be more that welcome.
    Thanks,
    Steve

Nevermind, it's fixed. One of the guys on PCQ&A suggested going to my ISP's website to see if they had a support page. They did and it stated that under certain circumstances that for the login ID the whole email address should be entered. For XP and Outlook Express one only uses the first part of the email address (your name); so just for grins I entered the whole address, name and all and everyting worked. Called my ISP and was told that that wasn't the way it's supposed to work. Well----
