Setting up Mircrosoft Server 2012

Hellow friends......i need some suggestions from you for setting up a network. our company is supplying and repairing of Locomotives. our head office is in one city and two repairing center in other cities and we have warehouse as well.
Problems:
the problems we are facing some of them are.. we dont have central command for example one sofware in repairing center has another version and in head office another which make a lot of problems some of the times.and printing any body can print whatever he
wants and there is no record of printing.
please advise me if we purchase a server 2012 can our problems be solved and what hardware and software we need ....and is it possible a user from our repairing center send a print from the printer of our head office. or if you can refer me a link where i can
find all the functions i tried to google it but the language was so technical i cant understand too much...
Best Regards

1. This question is too general one. More specific information is needed. I do recommend reading something about the infrastructure and hire someone knowledgeable who will set the system.
2. Consider using RDS. This will centralize your services. Software should comply with RDS requirements (RDS <-> terminal server)
3. Consider what type of network connection you will use. This will influence the cost.

  • Is it possible to set up sql server 2012 alwayson AG for existing scom2012 r2 databases?

we have an existing scom 2012 r2 management group of which all databases are on a single sql server 2012 sp1 instance on a server 2012 r2 server. Now we want to utilize the sql 2012 alwayson feature to improve the HA and DR. Is it possible to add another
sql server 2012 sp1 instance on another server 2012 r2 server and configure the two to create AlwaysOn Availability Group for all three scom databases, and how?
    Many thanks

    Hi,
Microsoft recommends dedicated SQL clusters for the DBs. If you are trying to achive a common backend SQL for your SC 2012 DBs; check this great post by Cameron Fuller:
http://www.systemcentercentral.com/system-center-2012using-a-common-sql-backend-database-sysctr-scom-scsm/ – it should give you some pointers. Check out the SCOM 2012 sizing helper as well!
We can set scom 2012 databases in SQL cluster and install SCOM Report Service on different SQL Report Server intance. And RS instance cannot be clustered but can be HA. Failover clustering is supported only for the report server database; you cannot run
the Report Server service as part of a failover cluster.

  • Setting up 2nd Server 2012 R2 AD site

    Folks,
Just looking for advice regarding setting up my first multi-site forest/domain; trying to get as much done at the first site before putting equipment at the 2nd site..
I already have a single forest/single domain/single site with Server 2012 R2 as a PDC in site A.  I'm intending to add site B in the same forest/domain, so I created the 2nd site and subnet.  We only have a couple of public IPs at each physical
site's internet connection, so these subnets are the local subnets of each network (192.168.0.0/24 for site A and 192.168.2.0/24 for site B).  I have a VPN router for site B that I intend to use temporarily with a spare public IP at site A (with its own
VPN router), and set up a permanent tunnel between the two.  Then, set up a DC for site B using the 192.168.2.x subnet and facilitate communication between the two DC's.  Once satisfied with this, I *should* be able to then take the site B VPN router
and site B DC to site B's physical location and only have to change the WAN IP and DNS for the site B VPN router for that internet connection, I believe.  Does this sound like a reasonable scenario?
    Known variables are:
    (1) Preferable to keep a single forest/domain to simplify accounts/permissions/etc across Site A and B (and future sites)
    (2) Setting up Branchcache or other filesystem caching between sites would be preferable, but not immediately required
    (3) Access to 5 total static public IPs at each site's internet connection, requires local IPv4 network site addressing for most local resources / clients
    Still have the following questions:
    (1) would the site B DC be a secondary DC for the single forest/domain or would it be a PDC for Site B withing the forest/domain?
    (2) is it necessary or preferable to multihome the DC's at each site with available public IPs as well as their local IPv4 addresses (since we plan to use a VPN tunnel between routers)?  Perhaps available as a backup option should the tunnel's connection
    be lost?

    Hi Erik,
You can add the additional DC into site A, wait for AD replication completes, then take the DC to site B, there won’t be any issues as long as you correctly configure DNS settings, IP addresses and subnets
    and sites information.
    (1) would the site B DC be a secondary DC for the single forest/domain or would it be a PDC for Site B withing the forest/domain?
Since these DCs belong to a single domain, then the new DC is an additional DC for the domain (you can also call it a secondary DC). In addition, PDC emulator is one of five FSMO roles, unless you transfer/seize
roles to the new DC, the new DC doesn’t hold any FSMO roles and it’s not a PDC. There can be only one PDC per domain.
    (2) is it necessary or preferable to multihome the DC's at each site with available public IPs as well as their local IPv4 addresses (since we plan to use a VPN tunnel between routers)?  Perhaps available as a backup option
should the tunnel's connection be lost
Please don’t multi-home any DC, because it will lead to numerous issues. In addition, do not assign public IP address on DCs, a DC should be highly secured, a public IP address on DC brings many potential threats.

  • Setting up Windows Server 2012 R2 standard in a workgroup

    Hi
I think I know the answer to this but would just like confirmation. We currently use a windows 7 pro 64 bit PC as a server in a work group with 20 computers running windows 7 pro, I want to move the business away from windows 7 that's used as the server
and migrate to a more capable server hardware running Windows Server standard 2012 R2 but initially I just want to maintain the workgroup until I have time to plan the migration across to a Domain, even if this never happens I would prefer the stability of
a server product and the extra capabilities offered by this product, can I assume that Server 2012 will be able to replace the current windows 7 pc and offer full workgroup functionality as it currently stands, thanks for any advice
    Wayne

But to receive optimal benefits, you should also install Windows Server on a server certified hardware platform.  My guess is that you are running your Windows 7 'server' on a desktop.  Though Windows Server will most likely install on a desktop
system, it is not officially supported unless the underlying hardware has been certified (www.windowsservercatalog.com).  No desktop systems are on that list.

  • Setting display language Server 2012 R2 Remote Desktop Services

I'm trying to setup local display language when user logs on to my Remote Desktop Services server.
I have configured the following GPO:
    User Configuration/Policies/Administrative Templates/Control Panel/Regional
    and Language Options/
Restrict selection of Windows menus and dialogs language
Restricts the UI languages Windows should use for the selected user
When I log on the user display language is not set, but it seems that the GPO has been applied correctly (GPResult)....
What am I doing wrong ?

    Hi,
Thank you for your posting in Windows Server Forum.
As you have configured GPO setting, please have a look at registry setting and check whether it is properly configured over there.
The Display Language was controlled by the REG_MULTI_SZ key PreferredUILanguages under
    HKCU\Control Panel\Desktop
Create this key "PreferredUILanguages" with ja-jp when need Japanese and delete it to get back English.
You can export this Registry Key and import it instead of edit this key directly.
    [HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Control Panel\Desktop]
    "PreferredUILanguages"=hex(7):6a,00,61,00,2d,00,6a,00,70,00,00,00,00,00

  • Remote Desktop Configuration on Windows Server 2012 R2

Hi, I wanted to see if anyone knows how to access the console that was known before as Terminal Services Configuration.
I've been having trouble with some servers that have 2 or more NICs and sometimes the RDP protocol won't listen on the right IP and I can't connect until I disable the other NICs.
Usually in 2008 R2 I would just go on this console and define the specific IP Address in which the RDP Protocol should be listening to, but know I can't find this console anywhere on 2012 R2.
Any ideas on how I can get there or change this setting on Windows Server 2012 R2?
    Thanks
    Eduardo Rojas

    Hi,
Based on my research, please try the following on your Windows Server 2012 R2.
    1. Start Registry Editor.
    2. Navigate to the following registry key (path may wrap):
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Network\{4D36E972-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}
    3. Under this key are one or more keys for the globally unique identifiers (GUIDs) corresponding to the installed LAN connections. Each of these GUID keys has a Connection subkey. Open each
of the GUID\Connection keys and look for the Name value. Choose the connection you want Terminal Services to use.
    4. When you have found the GUID\Connection key that contains the Name setting that matches the name of your LAN connection, write down or otherwise note the GUID value.
    5. Then navigate to the following key:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Terminal Server\lanatable. Using the GUID you noted in step 5 select subkey. Note it's LanaId.
    6. Navigate to the following value:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Terminal Server\WinStations\RDP-Tcp\LanAdapter. Change it's data to the value you noted in step 6. If you want RDP to listen on all LAN
    adapters enter value of 0.
Note: Serious problems might occur if you modify the registry incorrectly. Therefore, make sure that you follow these steps carefully. For added protection, back up the registry before you
modify it. Then, you can restore the registry if a problem occurs. For more information about how to back up and restore the registry, please refer to
How to back up and restore the registry in Windows.
    Hope this helps.

  • Which role do I need DFS or File server on fail over cluster server 2012 R2?

what I want to achieve is that I want to share all my user data files in a central location and to be highly available all the time whether it's a general share or folder redirection data. BUT I'm a bit confused;  I have fail over cluster  set-up
on server 2012, now I would like to add DFS as a role but than we have another role called File server and virtually it does the same thing as DFS? Means it creates a namespace share that can be access even one of the nodes goes down. Now I am thinking is
that DFS does the replication between two physical location but fail over cluster works slightly differently  and with file server it pretty much does the same thing except for replicating data from one drive to another. Now what do you suggest I do or
did I get the concept wrong like a noob?

DFS and Failover Clustering for file shares provides a similar end result for file access, but they are significantly different implementations.
Clustering provides high availability to files by presenting shared access to set a files served from a cluster.  With 2012 R2 Microsoft added the ability to create a Scale-out File Server that even allows all nodes of the cluster to server access to
the files for a higher level of performance and other great things.  Bottom line with Failover Clusters for files is that there is a single copy of the file presented from the cluster.
DFS on the other hand provides high availability to files by presenting multiple copies of the file by making a copy in two or more locations and presenting a naming space that allows access to the file through any of the network paths.  DFS works very
well for files that are primarily read-only.  When you get into a situation where there is a lot of updating of the shared files, DFS is not a very good solution.  There are ways to implement DFS for read/write files, but it generally requires a
good knowledge of how the files are used and how you want to manage them.
The key to answering your question comes in your first sentence "I want to share all my user data files in a central location and to be highly available all the time".  My initial reaction to this is that central location means Failover Cluster
    - there is only a single copy of the file.  However, "all the time" can be compromised by network failures to the central site.  Remote sites would not have access if they can't access the central site.  DFS provides the ability to
have copies remotely, but then if you allow updating at multiple sites, you have to manage the merging of the changes, among other things.

  • Server 2012 r2 Hyper-v guest network speed with 10 GB NIC's

    Hi
Setting up a Server 2012 r2 Hyper-v host with an onboard 4 port 1 GB nic and a offboard dual port 10 GB nic. We are using the 1gb quad port for management. The 10 Gb we intend using for hyper-v guest use however we don't seem to be able to achieve very high
speeds though the 10 GB adapter when assigned to a virtual switch. Testing the 10 Gb nic from the host confirms that we can transfer/get 10 GB speeds. When assigned to a virtual switch however the speed drops to about 1-2 Gbps. Has anybody seen anything like
this ?. We've tried a variety of settings and i can confirm that the network traffic is using the 10 GB nic.

    Hi,
I am almost certain what you see is by design. I don't want to go into to much detail because I'm in a bit of a hurry. But allow me to explain.
Suppose you have a 10Gb NIC interface and an multi-core CPU. When you have RSS (Receive-Side Scaling) disabled a single core can normally handing
around 2.5-4.3Gbps. When you enable RSS the data streams/traffic is spread across multiple cores.
But RSS is a network optimization feature for the Management OS, not for a vSwitch. Instead you should use VMQ (Virtual Machine Queuing). VMQ is
the equilavant of RSS, but then intended for VMs. But... there is a difference. VMQ does not spread single data streams/traffic across multiple cores. Instead is (dynamically) assigns each vmNIC its own core. So... you don't use multiple-cores at a time for
a single vmNIC. You can't use RSS and VMQ at the same time. Keep that in mind.
But... you can accomplish this by enabling vRSS as well. That's another story.
If you watch the following video, at the end you know all about VMQ.

  • Server 2012 - installing user cal error

    Hello,
we have set up a server 2012 and bought 4 User CALs for multiple acces.
RDS session host & collection deployment has been installed and configured.
however when i want to install the appropriate User CALs in RD Licensing Manager i do the following:
    1) click on install license
    2) enter the correct license program and agreement number
    3) select product version "Windows Server 2012"
    4) select license type "RDS per User CAL"
    5) select quantity "4"
and then on the next screen i receive the following error message:
"the licensing agreement data provided to Microsoft is not valid. Check all the information you provided, make any necessary corrections and then resubmit your request. if the problem persists, try using a different connection method."
i have checked RD Licensing Diagnoser and see the following errors/warnings:
"Licenses are not available for this Remote Desktop Session Host server, and RD Licensing Diagnoser has identified licensing problems for the RD Session Host server"
"Number of licenses available for clients: 0"
"The Remote Desktop Session Host server is in Per User licensing mode and No Redirector Mode, but license server XXX  does not have any installed licenses with the following attributes:
Product version: Windows Server 2008 or Windows Server 2008 R2
    Licensing mode: Per User"
Additional information: we do not have a license server, so the same server has been specified as licensing server in RDS session host configuration.
    Any help appreciated!
    Best,
    Sebastian

    Hi Sebastian,
I recommend you contact the Clearinghouse and explain to them what is happening.  Please have your licensing information handy when you call.  If necessary you can switch the RD Licensing server to Telephone method and install the licenses that
    way.
Locate the Microsoft Clearinghouse Telephone Number for Your Country or Region
    http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc754874.aspx
The link is for Server 2008 R2 but the instructions for finding the number are almost the same for 2012.

  • Share IPP printer in server 2012

    Hello,
I want to set up a server 2012 print server to share cups printers. These cups printers are available as IPP printer.
I can add an IPP printer all right on the server, but I don't have the option to share that printer.
It simply tells me "Sharing is not suported for this type of printer"
    What am I doing wrong?
    Thanks!

    Hi,
Print Servers that have IPP enabled will automatically make a shared printer available through the relevant
Point and Print sharing mechanism, as well as IPP.
Print servers will publish a webpage that lists available IPP shares, and Windows clients connecting to those shares can download available v3 drivers directly from the print server. For more details, please refer to following article.

  • Set up Search Service App For SharePoint server 2013 on Windows server 2012 R2 not working

    Hi all,
I installed SharePoint server 2013 on Windows  server 2012 R2 using VirtualBox.  I created a DC(domain controller) server with a domain set up on one VM and it has SQL server 2012 SP1 installed. Then SharePoint 2013 on another VM was set up to access
the DC server.  Everything seems working except Search Service App which cannot be sucessfully set up. Creation process for Search service app says Successful and 4 search databases were created and look fine. But when I navigate to search service app
admin page, it gives error info:

Since separate DC server and SharePoint server do not work, I installed SharePoint 2013 on DC server ( so DC server has everything on it now ) but it gives exactly same result. Later I installed SharePoint 2013 SP1 and still have the same problem with Search
Service app. I spent two weeks tried all suggestions available from Web and Google but SharePoint Search Service simply does not work. Config and other databases work but why Search Service has this issue seemingly related to search DB.
Could anybody please help out? You deserve a top SharePoint consultant award if you could find a solution. I am so frustrated and so tired by this issue.    This seems also to be a SP set up issue.
    Thanks a lot.

Using new Search Service App wizard to create SSA is always a success. I could delete existing SSA and recreate it and no problem. It says successful but when I open Search Admin page from CA, it gives me errors as mentioned.

  • Difference between database features - SQL Server 2008 R2 navtive vs SQL Server 2012 with SQL Server 2008 compatibility set?

I am investigating the impact of upgrading from SQL Server 2008 R2 to SQL Server 2012. To reduce the impact of the upgrade, I am planning to restore / create our application database onto SQL Server 2012 with compatibility level 100 (SQL Server 2008 and
    SQL Server 2008 R2).
Are there any differences in feature support for database running in native mode on SQL Server 2008 R2 vs a database installed on SQL Server 2012 with compatibility level 100 set?

Yes there can be difference and impact there are few features deprecated in SQL Server 2012 you must be aware about that. Please see
Deprecated Database Features in SQL Server 2012
Deprecated SQL Server features in SQL Server 2012
After you migrate database to 2012 please don't move ahead with production unless you have tested your application to new created database

  • How do I set firefox as the default browser in Windows Server 2012 Group Policy Editor?

Hello, I am unable to set firefox as the default browser despite multiple different attempts to do so using group policy.
    I have:
    - Set a registry command (targeted at 32/64 via a WMI query) to reset the opening command as shown below:
    HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Classes\http\shell\open\command
    "C:\Program Files (x86)\Mozilla Firefox\firefox.exe" -osint -url "%1"
    - Set a powershell logon script to run (that does run):
    firefox.exe -silent -setDefaultBrowser
Despite setting the above it seems the client computers browsers are not affected by the settings above. When the script runs or if I run the command above a UAC window pops up and requests that I accept the command (for the setDefaultBrowser) but even if I click yes as an administrator it does nothing.
Since GPO in 2012 has changed perhaps there is something that I am missing? Do I need to somehow disable Windows Internet Explorer from achieving default browser status?
Please do not reply if you will suggest that I use Internet Explorer Maintenance (since this function in GPO has been disabled since IE10)
My DC is Server 2012, my client computers are Win7 32/64.

The above reply does not take into account that I am trying to use GROUP POLICY EDITOR to make it the default browser.

  • Advice on setting up a windows server 2012 domain LAB for study within Hyper V server 2012 r2 machine

HI im wanting to setup a study lab containing several windows 2012 r2 servers (mixture of core and full installs) to allow me to study towards my MCSA in server 2012 r2 and then for MCSE.
    Physical equpiment,
1 pc   which is has window 8.1 pro installed from this machine.  This machine i would like  to remote manage and connect through to my Hyper-v server and then into any of the virtual machines. (this machine is more of a gaming pc so not
able to run to many vm's from it)
2 pc bought Just for study  8 core processor 1 tb of hhd space 16 gb of ram.
This machine i would like to setup using hyper-v server 2012 r2,  which then i would create a test domain within it also with some clients allowing me to play and undstand the principles im learning.
now im getting conflictiong information regarding the Hyper-v server 2012.
If i set the hyper-v server up as a standalone in a work group.  Would i be able to manage ther VM's within the hyperv server from my external windows 8 pro machine using the remote server management tools or would i need to connect that pc
    to the domain.
Things I think i can do but not sure.   as im still learning
Could I setup a server 2012 r2 running AD dns and add the hyper-v role then wihtin that create the rest of the domain inside, allowing me from my other phyical machine log on to domain and manage all servers and machines.
Could I set up as i originally suggested, set up hyper-v 2012 server in a workgroup,  then create the domain within the hyper-v server but still connect from my external pc to manage the hyper-v and all the internal VM's within the domain.
I could run a Domain controller on a VM from my other windows 8 machine (within hyper-v or wmware), then on the 2nd machine install the hyper-v server connect it to the domain running from the other machine from what i can see, many people say this is the
better option, BEST Practice, but this is only a lab and i dont require resilience.  and i would prefer to have my  as a sever manager via the remote tools.
So what i like to know if you can point me in the right direction either by a guide for someone who has setup a similar to me.
or tell which of the above options is possible or not so i dont waste anytime.
Network, i know i can do this virtually but i already have cisco routers and layer 2 swicthes so i may make the network lab via them.
Thanks in advance  for any help you can give me

It makes it easier to set up if everything is in the same domain, but it is quite possible to manage the VMs without being part of the domain.  A very useful tool that I use for my lab all the time (my lab is in a lab domain and my laptop is in the
corporate domain with absolutely no trusts between them) is RDCMAN.
http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=21101  I all my machines, physical and virtual, defined within RDCMAN and can easily connect to any one of them from my laptop.  But to understand how to manage everything remotely, I create
one virtual workstation within the domain and load all the management tools on it.  I RDP to the management workstation and perform most management functions, but I can get to any machine directly if I need to.

Yes, but you could also build the AD as a VM, too.
