Setting up with external Drobo mini SSD RAID

I am getting a Drobo mini (connected through Thunderbolt) with 4 240GB SSD drives and setting it up with RAID 5, so I have three drives for data and one protection drive.
My goal is to set up my Late 2012 iMac (internal 1TB Fusion drive) so that when I migrate to the next system, I don't have to transfer all of my data from my internal drive as most of it will be on my external RAID box.
Ultimately, I would like to just have my internal drive with the OS and Applications if possible and then have all of the data (music, videos, photos, Office documents, mail, etc.) placed on my external Drobo.    I know that iTunes library and some of the other apps  I can easily set the data to be put on any drive (internal or external), but can all of the apps do this?  I haven't seen that possible with iPhoto, Mail, etc.
Any suggestions would be helpful.

I purchased the 256 GB M500 SSD's from Micron.  If was going to make a recommendation on which SSDs to use, I've read that the fastest and most reliable are the Samsung 840 Pro.  I've heard  there are others that are approaching the same speed, but I got the Micron since they were less expensive and still faster than other brands.
Now, I did run a benchmark test between USB 3 and Thunderbolt.   Thunderbolt 1 was twice as fast as USB 3 in the benchmark tests using the M500's SSD.
I'm still waiting for Drobo to get their software so I can make the Drobo mini a bootup device which their firmware doesn't support just yet.
Right now, I have it set up for backups and I have about 600+GB already used up.
I've owned this device for a few months now, and it was easy to setup and I don't have any complaints per se about it working.  I'm just waiting for them to update the firmware so I can use it as a boot up device using Thunderbolt.  I just downloaad a new firmware (second firmware update since I bought it in December 2013), but I don't know if this update allows it to boot up under Thunderbolt.   I have to read up on what the latest update does.

  • Optimum set-up with external library and iTunes Match

I'm a little frustrated with iTunes Match and iTunes, as it doesn't seem to play nice with libraries stored on an external disk on a network. Here's my current set-up, and any tips on how to eliminate some of the steps I have to take would be much appreciated.
    Set-up:
One iTunes Media folder stored on external network drive at home
Another iTunes Media folder, titled "Away from Home", stored on Macbook
iTunes Match is turned on and has all songs (that qualify) uploaded onto it
Own multiple devices that access iTunes Match
If I leave my network and want to use iTunes Match, I have to:
    1. Turn off iTunes.
    2. Option-click iTunes and hold option to select a library.
    3. Choose my "Away from Home" library (or create a new one for those who haven't done this already)
    4. Sign in to iTunes, Turn on iTunes Match and add my computer/library to iTunes Match
    5. iTunes Match does it's thing which obviously means it adds 0 songs due to having an empty library, then all my iTunes Match songs populate my library
That is all fine and great. However, when I return home and want to listen to ALL songs, meaning those that didn't qualify and the unedited versions (since iTunes Match STILL pushes clean versions of songs), I must take these steps:
    1. Turn off iTunes.
    2. Option-click itunes and hold option to select my library on external network drive
    3. iTunes loads up, but only loads ~16,000 of 19,000 songs
    4. Turn iTunes off again.
    5. Open Finder, hold option when I click Go in menu bar, go to Library<Preferences and delete the com.apple.iTunes.plist file.
    6. Open iTunes again, this time not holding option
    7. iTunes opens as if it's been updated or newly installed (meaning it asks if I agree to the T&SA).
    8. All songs now found and appear
This is downright stupid. I shouldn't have to take all of these steps to do each of these. It may not sound like it takes a long time, but when you come home and want to turn on music while cleaning, entertaining friends, etc., taking these steps is a hassle and makes iTunes become a chore to run. Is there not a way to simply access my songs in the Cloud without closing iTunes and having to choose a different library? Or are these really the only steps I can take to access music from home and, subsequently, when I get back home?

  • Screen no longer works, help getting set up with external LCD?

So my Titanium Macbook Pro's screen went out yesterday and it's no longer covered so I've been trying to figure out how to get it to work with an external LCD monitor.
I can get it to boot up, and I can even get it to open itunes via Spotlight and hit play and hear music, so I know all else is (hopefully) fine.
The monitor I have is an "Acer LCD Monitor AL1916W A" and I have the adaptor going out of my MBP to a VGA cord that then connects to the Acer.
I read this page to get the idea to do this: http://osxdaily.com/2010/12/21/broken-macbook-pro-screen-turn-it-into-a-desktop- mac/
But I cannot get the Acer screen to recognize the MBP and show an image. The Acer powers up and shows it's logo but then says 'no signal'.
I tried to blindly Spotlight > System Preferences > Displays but can't get anywhere from there. I tried to restart it and close the screen but no-go.
    Help?

  • Diagnosing an ASM space issue for a primary and a standby database instance with external redundancy.

I've received an alert from Enterprise manager saying "Disk Group DATA_SID requires rebalance because at least one disk
is low on space". My colleague who I would go to with this question is unavailable, so this is a learning opportunity
for me. So far google and Oracle documentation have provided lots of information, but nothing that answers my questions.
I've run the following query on both the primary and standby databases ASM instances:
    select name, disk_number, sector_size,os_mb, total_mb, free_mb, redundancy from v$asm_disk;
On the primary I get 4810M Free space and 18431M Total Space
on the standby I get 1248M Free space and 18431M Total Space -- this is the one that complained via OEM
When I run the following query in the database instance:
    select sum(bytes)/1024/1024 MB from dba_segments;
    I get 3736.75M as a result.
    My questions are:
    1. Will OEM's suggestion to rebalance the disk actually help in this situation since the instance is set up with external redundancy?
    2. If I've got 18G of space and only 3.7G of data, why is OEM complaining?
    3. How can I reclaim what I presume is allocated but unused space in my problem disk group?
    4. How can I determine what extra data the standby has that the primary doesn't since both have the same total space allocation, but different amounts of free space?

Thank you for the reply. That link is very good.
We are an 11.1 version of our database. Linus is OEL 5.6.
So, looking at the portion of the link that refers to 'Add Standby database and Instances to the OCR' - If we use SRVCTL to give the STANDBY the role of ‘physical_standby’ and the start option of ‘mount’, what effect will that have if the STANDBY becomes our PRIMARY?
Would these database settings need to be modified manually with SRVCTL each time?
We understand why the instance is not starting when the node is rebooted, we are looking for a best practice of how this is implemented.
    Thank you.

  • Beyond 2560 x 1440 with External Monitors - is W540 the only Option?

    Hello Everyone,
I went through great efforts to upgrade my x201 to a T430s (NVIDIA) in order to drive 3 external monitors from a dock which I finally got to work.
I do this because I like to travel between home and the office, but have equally elaborate set ups with external video and external audio, yet while being able to travel with the same laptop.
I am now experimenting with 2, not 3 monitors, using the new LG 34" curved monitors, which are a bit bigger and display at 3440 x 1440.
The good news is using my T430s I am able to get both monitors to display at 3440 x 1440 and they look great!
The bad news is that if I open up just one too many windows, or drag something across the extended desktop, they are crashing.
When they crash, I lose the signal (DisplayPort) and get error messages from the monitors.
    I have already spoken to
    1) Lenovo sales
    2) Lenovo tech support
    3) Lenovo tech support in Atlanta
and no one seems to have any idea what I am talking about.
I am guessing I may need to upgrade from my T430s, which I would rather not do.
I am also guessing that the W540 would have enough graphics / video horsepower to drive at least 2 of these higher resolution monitors?
In an ideal world, I would not have the extra weight or features of the W540, but first and foremost, I want multiple and dazzling high resolution displays from a dock.
Given that I am going from 3 screens down to 2, also wondering if say, an X1 Carbon might drive 2 using a dock?
Or it is only able to drive 2 screens at 1920 x 1080 or 2560 x 1440 best case.
    In summary, any advice please:
    1) W540 using LG "ultrawide" screens as described above
    2) Any other Lenovo laptop not as big or heavy as the W540 which would still have high end, high powered graphics capabilities when docked?
    Thank you and best regards,

Thank you for replies so far.
Re Lenovo tech "support" I am a die hard Lenovo fan (4 laptops so far...) but find Lenovo's website confusing and their tech support terrible.
For my T430s, I paid for at least an hour of support to no avail, before discovering that it was a simple Windows update that was the key to driving 3 external monitors, with better information generally coming from this forum.  Supposedly, even the T430s with the NVIDIA upgrade can handle 3 external monitors at 2560 x 1440.
Now, however, I would like to use bigger and higher resolution screens, even if it means going from 3 external monitors to only 2.
I have used the T430s and dock, driving 2 of the new Samsung 28" 4K monitors up to 2560 x 1440 without any issues.  But moving up to the LG 34 ultrawide screens with 3440 x 1440, I can only run one.  With 2 it becomes unstable.
I hope more Lenovo fans tune into the resolution and display quality  - it would only enhance the brand.
Even for business only users, with data and text, everything is cleaner, crisper and less fatiguing at the higher resolutions.
ColonelONeill thanks for suggestion but hoping to find an integrated, on board, plug and play, drop into the dock and be done with it solution.
So again, hoping that worst case, the W540 with the highest spec video card could drive 2 of the LG ultrawide monitors without struggling?
Or one of the other newer machines?

I have a lion server set up to host storage for time machine backups. Is there a limit to how many different computers can back up to the single server to back up. I am only backing up the users folders . The backup drive is an external Drobo with 6 TB. Right now it seems to back up my users all day long. I set their time machine interval to every 5 hours but it still runs all day long and is very slow. Server is on a new Mac Server mini.

AFAIK, there is no user limit.. it is simply a question of the network load. AFP is a fairly clean protocol.. but TM is not.. it does a lot of testing of the backup.. infact your setting of 5hour gap could well make it worse.
I would sort out the clients that are doing 100GB backups to a different backup location.. no matter how fast your network.. 100GB takes time to backup.. and over wireless forever.. it will never end.
I guess some of these clients are on wireless?? I would separate the TM of wireless to those that are wired. No more than 4 or 5 wireless clients to a target device. Otherwise you are saturating your network with backup data. And use 5ghz.. so close by.. it is much faster than 2.4ghz and you will get much better transfer rates.

  • What's the best set up with AppleTV and Mac Mini with 2TB external HD?

    Hi
I have an Apple TV and 2TB external HD connected to my Mac Mini.
I want to stream through my Mac Mini and I want all my media stored in my external HD.
What's the best setting so that I sync only one way to my external HD the contents of my Apple TV? I don't want anything except unwatched media on my Apple TV.
I'm fairly new to Mac world and Apple TV, as far as I read iTunes and Apple TV sync both ways, how do I achieve a one way sync to my Mac Mini with external HD?
    Many thanks

Ok that makes it clear, sorry I used wrong terminology,it should have been transfer rather than sync.
You don't want to stop transfers of purchased content. See This User Tip
While on the subject a friend of mine told me that the streaming videos doesn't work well,it kinda freezes and stops but the music stream is fine. Is that true or his set up is wrong?
It's not necessarily his configuration set up that's wrong, it's probably that he has a poor network by virtue of too great a distance or interference from other networks or other household equipment.

  • I'm having a hard time setting up my external hard from with my AirPort Extreme and Time Machine Backups.

I have been using a Mac Mini with an external hard and Time Machine.  I bought an Airport Extreme and have had problem setting up the hard drive using the USB port on the Airport Extreme.  I also just recently bought a Mac Book Air and hope to have both computers back up to the external hard drive using Time Machine and Airport Extreme.  I have been using the optical drive from the Mac mini to load programs into the Mac Book Air.  I think I'm just getting confused in Finder.  I am just not seeing the hard drive.  I ended up plugging the hard drive back into the Mac Mini and that is work fine again.  How do I setting the external hard drive up to the AirPort Extreme and use for both computers?  Or at least to start with the Mac mini.

It's critical to understand that Time Machine (TM) stores backups differently between local and network drives. That would mean the TM backup on your locally attached USB hard drive will not be directly useable when it is connected to the AirPort Extreme Base Station (AEBS). There is a way to copy a local version to a network version, but it is not fool-proof. When you do connect this drive and point TM to it, TM will start a brand new backup, leaving your existing backup as is.
If your current backup is critical to you, you may want to consider getting a second USB drive to attach to the Extreme and use your existing one as a backup ... or use TM's multi-backup process to backup to more than one destination drive alternatively.
So, at this point, you may want to make a decision on how you want to go forward to help provide a solution for you.
To directly answer your question, when you go to select a destination for a Time Machine backup, the drive(s) that show up under "Backup Disks" are those that TM already recognizes and has backed up to. Those listed under "Available Disks" are drives (either local or on the network) that TM can back up to.

  • How can I set up an external harddrive with time machine that already has data on it without losing the data?

I have an external hard drive that I use to hold photos and other files on that no longer fit on my macbook. I also use the external hard drive for back ups set up with time machine. I don't believe I ever did anything to partition it, I've just always had separate folders (Photos, Music, etc) with one being called "Back Ups" (or Backups.backupdb) that my time machine back ups would automatically go into. Recently, I made the switch from my HDD in my macbook to a new SSD of the same size. I used the back ups on the external hard drive to restore all my content, which all worked out fine. My problem now is in using my external hard drive. When I plug it in, it no longer seems to be working with time machine. Also, I was organizing some files within the external hard drive, and when I dragged one into a folder, it took a while to load. Before, it was instantaneous moving a file already on the external hard drive to another location within it. Can anyone help me in getting the external hard drive to work with my new SSD? I don't want to delete any of the folders or back ups that are already on it, since that's the only place I have some of those files. Please let me know if you need anymore details. Thanks! (sorry if this is posted in the wrong forum)

First, she has to be logged in to the same iTunes account as she used on the old computer.
Second, when she plugs the iPhone in to iTunes, right click on the phone name and select transfer purchases.
Third, enter one contact and one calendar entry into the new computer's addressbook/calendar.
After that, she should be fine.

  • Question about Raid set up with (SB600) K9A2 Platinum V 1.0

I am having trouble setting up my raid.  I am using Windows XP Pro and go through the usual set up procedures using F6 command then installing the drivers etc.  Once I get everything up and running installed on Raid 0 the computer works very well for a few days.  Then later BSOD.  The first was a 0000007b stop error, then I got the system back up again only to have it a few days then another BSOD 00000024 stop error.  This time I was not able to bring it back.  I thought my problem was linked to a RAM issue as I was using OCZ PC2 6400 DDR2 OCZ2G8008GQ (2X2GB).  The reason I thought this was when I went to the motherboard site for approved ram, this ram was not there, then on OCZ site it was also not tested, then I went to newegg and used thier motherboard ram compatability screener and it did not show up either.  So I bought the Giel ram and am now trying to set it back up again though I could not get it back still.  So I finally just reformatted the drives (using another computer and a hard drive enclosure)and am getting ready to reinstall everything.  I want to make sure I am using the right SB600 drivers for my application.  I should be selecting AHCI X86 or x64.  This does pertain to the operating system (I am using Win XP 32 Bit) or the processor (I am using the Kuma Athlon X2 7750 2.7Ghz)
I believe I should be selecting the x86 drivers when installing windows.  Am I right?  I just want to make sure I do not screw anything up so as to bring on the horrible BSODs again.  I realize this could be some driver issue as well that could have caused this.  I did everything I could to make sure it was not the hard drives.
The last question I have is:  In order to ensure proper operation of the dual channel ram, (I have read the book, still confused a bit), I must install the ram with one stick in the first slot nearest the CPU and the other in the first slot of the opposite color?  In this case Green/Orange slots.

I was just trying to obtain the fastest load times/install times.  When the machine was first running it was very quick with no cpu temps running beyond 34C, no abnormal performance.  This is my wifes computer though.  Things began to go astray after she updated through windows update to SP3.  I am now using a slipstreamed CD with SP3 already on it.  She said she was clicking on the internet explorer "E" icon and it just shut off.  THen when it rebooted (it was still set that way in windows recovery) it started loading windows then BSOD 0000007b error.  I fixed it by finally getting into windows recovery and running fixboot, then fixmbr, then chkdsk /r /f.  It started working fine again.  Then later maybe two days later it happend again this time wihtout the restarting.  She was working on something else this time and it shutdown again.  This time when it tried ot reload windows I was getting the ntfs.sys issue with a 00000024 stop error.  I could not do the same magic with windows recovery any longer.  When I tried it indicated it repaired the boot, the mbr, but when I tried to run the chkdsk, it gave me disk read errors, such as "this disk has unrecoverable errors".  I used Western Digital test programs on the drives by removing them and installing them into an enclosure and taking them to a good computer.  One drive I could see in windows and it reflected 140G/B, the other would pick up but not in my computer.  It also showed the drive as having the entire quantity as the RAID together had of 298G/B versus the real size of the drive 150G/B.  I just figured that was the drive that was set up as LD 1 in the RAID setup (prior to windows) and possible was the drive with he boot sector on it???  I could get another drive and include it into the array, but then just figure I will have to worry about 3 drives versus 2.  She keeps improtant backup stuff on an external drive.  I will tone down the ram to 800.  Should I set the latency in Bios though to the 5-5-5-15?  or just leave everything at auto like I hade done before?  Though this ram is new and was not in the computer when this happened.  I had replaced the other OCZ Gold stuff and put in the G Skill stuff I have now.  I had previously stated Giel, but it is G Skill, sorry about that.  I may just do what you say, guess sleep on it and decide whether to just install the drives with OS/Programs on one and data on the other.

  • SSD Raid 0 With 2011 MBP

I have a late 2011 15" MBP with 2x Intel SSD x25-M 160gb drives (1 in the main bay, 1 in the optical bay). I chose these drives due to the limited bandwidth in the optical bay (it's restricted to 3g vs the main bays 6g).
I have found an issue that is rather curious when trying to install OSX onto the machine and it concerns the disk utility:
OS X Recovery Disk Assistant created with Mavericks will NOT see either SSD installed in either bay using the disk assistant (no format or parition possible of either drive.  I can place the drives in external cases and they work flawlessly i.e. you can partition each drive but when you put the partitioned drives back in the MBP Mavericks will not see them).
OS X Recovery Disk Assistant created with Lion will see BOTH drives and will configure raid 0 successfully (once installed I ran the Mavericks install and it did not see the drive with Lion Installed on it so no upgrade was possible - I ran the internet download as well as trying to install Mavericks from an external firewire drive using a previous download of OSX 10.9).
I am about to try installing Mountain Lion to see if it will detect the SSD raid drive (it's downloading now).  If that works I will try to then upgrade to Mavericks (doing this incrementally kinda *****).
I'm wondering if anyone else has ran into this problem?  I have seen plenty of YouTube videos of people putting two SSDs in their MBPs and running Raid 0 with plenty of success.  I'm just wondering if maybe there's a brick wall with anything other than a 13" MBP?
    Thanks in advance.

Kappy - I think you missed part of the information in my last post:
I HAVE SUCCESSFULLY created and installed OSX (Snow Leopard, Lion, & Moutain Lion) using the Disk Utility provided by Apple to install fresh versions of each and they work perfectly.
I DID NOT clone these from external drives.
I would like to install Mavericks (I don't care at this point about the raid config but it would be nice) but the disk utility version of Mavericks (that you need to install that specific OS) will not see the SSDs installed inside the MBP.  Even if I install Mountain Lion on a single drive and then try to upgrade to Mavericks the drives are not seen.
Even if i could clone the Mavericks install from an external drive onto the internal raid I still can't see either drive to even do it.
