Setting wallpaper/bmpanel in openbox? [SOLVED]

I am on my first succesful HD install of Arch wirh Openbox right now and I have been documenting some of the things that are giving me issues. If you are curious about how I went about with my installation you can check this thread out:
http://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=76315
One of the issues Im having is with themeing and autostart programs. I did a little research and found that in order to have, for instance, my bmpanel and desktop wallpaper start up with x I had to make an autostart.sh under my ~/.config/openbox/ and add this within:
# Run the system-wide support stuff
. $GLOBALAUTOSTART
# Programs to launch at startup
nitrogen /media/vault/Wallpapers/107320-Tranquility-1680.jpg &
xcompmgr -c -t-5 -l-5 -r4.2 -o.55 &
# SCIM support (for typing non-english characters)
export LC_CTYPE=ja_JP.utf8
export XMODIFIERS=@im=SCIM
export GTK_IM_MODULE=scim
export QT_IM_MODULE=scim
scim -d &
# Programs that will run after Openbox has started
(sleep 2 && bmpanel arch) &
So thats what I make it look like. I have nitrogen and bmpanel (with arch theme) installed and working correctly. The problem is that when i startx and the script runs, it just opens nitrogen with no images selectable. Also bmpanel does start with arch theme but it is not transparant like in the photo available where I downloaded it.
I do have composting available as I have my nvidia drivers installed and i checked that it is working in the terminal, but I am at a loss as to why they arent working correctly. I have checked the documentation for this and found it a little lacking? Anyone know where to go from here?

Don't know bmpanel (never liked it myself), but the
problem with nitrogen is that in order to set wallpaper from the
commandline you have to include a switch. Chose whichever of the
following best suits the image in question.
nitrogen --set-best
/media/vault/Wallpapers/107320-Tranquility-1680.jpg &
nitrogen --set-centered
/media/vault/Wallpapers/107320-Tranquility-1680.jpg &
nitrogen --set-scaled
/media/vault/Wallpapers/107320-Tranquility-1680.jpg &
nitrogen --set-tiled
/media/vault/Wallpapers/107320-Tranquility-1680.jpg &
Or, if you rely on nitrogen's GUI wallpaper interface, you can just
use the following:
nitrogen --restore &
This will set the desktop to the last image you selected via the GUI
interface.
Then if you want to get fancy, you can add a menu item to your openbox
menu to launch the nitrogen selector:
<item label="Wallpaper">
<action name="Execute">
<execute>nitrogen ~/wallpaper</execute>
</action>
</item>
Also never used bmpanel, so can't be of help there. Tint2 and pypanel
both have nice transparency.

    I have the same problem...  IDK why I have an empty shutdown dialogue.  I also have a bunch of non user users appear through it's menu.
    It appears the problem has to do with most Arch installs not having consolekit anymore...

  • [SOLVED] nitrogen fails to set the background with openbox

    Hi guys !
    I have a strange issue . Yesterady everything was working fine . nitrogen would set my wallpaper at each boot . This morning for some reason nitrogen sets the background for about one second
    and then it goes back to the default openbox background (the gray one) . I don't remember changing anything yesterday , i just added the multilib repository so i don't think this is an issue .
    Here is my .xinitrc
    nitrogen --restore &
    xfce4-panel &
    exec ck-launch-session openbox-session
    What i'm doing wrong ?
    Last edited by shak (2010-08-28 12:59:45)

    I've finally found the solution . Apparently i forgot to edit my autostart.sh file , so when i 've isntalled the xfce4-panel there was conlfict and the background was reset to the defaul .
    After deleting the content of autostart.sh file and putting there the nitrogen and xfce4-panel commands and leaving the exec openbox-session at the .xinitrc file everything is fine

  • GDM and OpenBox - Wallpaper and background problem [SOLVED]

    I have a strange problem.
    I am using GDM as login manager. And I am using OpenBox as a window manager.
    As soon as GDM appears on the screen, my wifi connection is connected... so its good.
    But, when I login Feh loads my background picture and it disappears after few seconds..... I solved this modifying the autostart script (adding the sleep).
    Now background stays, BUT not always. Sometimes it disappears.... sometimes not.
    It seams that this problem is appearing randomly.
    So my question is:
    Is there a way to disable Gnomes (GDMs) background color and picture after loading openbox through GDM?

    It will apply to gnome as well, so if gnome-settings-daemon is your problem then you either need to choose one environment or perhaps do some settings adjustment with gconftool-2 when you log into each environment.  I didn't try this but settings for openbox could be changed with a couple of gconftool-2 lines in autostart.sh, e.g.
    gconftool-2 --set --type bool /desktop/gnome/background/draw_background "false" &
    and settings for gnome could be changed from a DE-specific ("OnlyShowIn=GNOME") .desktop file or two in $HOME/.config/autostart.
    I tried this, but it didnt work. Its a Gnome 3.
    I dont understand second part of your post... ("OnlyShowIn=GNOME")

  • [Solved] Set Screen Resolution in Openbox

    Is there a utility to set the screen resolution in Openbox?
    Last edited by Wintervenom (2008-09-26 07:43:03)

    You can make an Openbox submenu with various xrandr settings.
    Like so:
    <menu id="res-menu" label="Resolution">
    <separator label="Resolution"/>
    <item label="1280x1024">
    <action name="Execute">
    <execute>
    xrandr -s 1280x1024
    </execute>
    </action>
    </item>
    <item label="1024x768">
    <action name="Execute">
    <execute>
    xrandr -s 1024x768
    </execute>
    </action>
    </item>
    <item label="800x600">
    <action name="Execute">
    <execute>
    xrandr -s 800x600
    </execute>
    </action>
    </item>
    Of course, you need to have those modes defined in xorg.conf.

  • [SOLVED] Awesome 3.2 [cant/dont know how] set wallpaper

    Hi everyone,
    I installed Awesome 3.2 from the repo yesterday and I have to say I'm glad that all the posts I read about it convinced me enough to install and try using it. After a couple of hours of getting myself around the change, eventually, I ended up changing the wallpaper.
    The only thing is I can't do it.
    One is supposed to alter the wallpaper_cmd field on the theme file, right? The default looked something like awsetbg /path/to/file.png , and I changed only the path to my wallpaper. But it doesn't display the wallpaper.
    Tried with diferent bg setter, nitrogen (as someone sugested in another thread), but nothing. I'm almost 90% sure that I'm doing something wrong, since I'm using it since yesterday as I said before.
    Thanks in advance

    what does this say?
    post your .config/awesome/themes/default or whereever you define your wallpaper.
    [s3kt0r@myhost ~]$ awesome -k
    ✔ Configuration file syntax OK.
    Now here's ~/.awesome/themes/default (after reading the replies I changed stuff):

    bg_focus = #535d6c

    # Display the taglist squares

    layout_tiletop = /usr/share/awesome/themes/default/layouts/tiletopw.png

    I also commented the wallpaper_cmd line in /usr/share/awesome/themes/default/theme.
    I believe my rc.lua is fine, I can see already the wallpaper I wanted.
    So awsetbg was crazy after all. Thanks a lot for all your help people.

  • How to set wallpaper in Xmonad

    Hi,
    I have installed Xmonad from AUR, as mentioned here: https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Xmonad, and I am trying to set my wallpaper, as mentioned in here: http://xmonad.org/tour.html , However, my installation doesn't have xpmroot command. How can I set my wallpeper?

    The most simple and minimal way is probably to use imlibsetroot from AUR: http://aur.archlinux.org/packages.php?ID=40199

  • Can't set wallpaper in IceWM

    Hi there,
    I can't set my wallpaper in IceWM. No matter whether I use icebgset or edit ~/.icewm/preferences manually, there's still the default theme background as desktop wallpaper. How do I change that?
    TIA,
    Blackhole

    Should be trivial, imho. I never had problems with this one. Best post your startup and preferences files.
    I have in preferences.
    # icewmbg preferences
    # IMPORTANT: You MUST run icewmbg (probably before icewm)
    # to set the background!
    # Display desktop background centered and not tiled
    DesktopBackgroundCenter=0 # 0/1
    # Support for semitransparent terminals like Eterm or gnome-terminal
    # SupportSemitransparency=1 # 0/1
    # Desktop background scaled to full screen
    # DesktopBackgroundScaled=0 # 0/1
    # Desktop background color
    DesktopBackgroundColor = "rgb:00/20/40"
    # Desktop background image
    DesktopBackgroundImage = "/home/bp/.icewm/IceWMBackgroundImage.img"
    # Color to announce for semi-transparent windows
    # DesktopTransparencyColor=""
    # Image to announce for semi-transparent windows
    # DesktopTransparencyImage=""
    Do you run a desktop manager, by chance? They tend to do the background stuff by themselves.
    I run IDesk, but do not use their background capability in my .ideskrc:
    table Config
    FontName: Sans
    FontSize: 9
    FontColor: #ffffff
    Locked: false
    Transparency: 40
    Shadow: true
    ShadowColor: #000000
    ShadowX: 1
    ShadowY: 2
    Bold: false
    ClickDelay: 200
    IconSnap: true
    SnapWidth: 50
    SnapHeight: 50
    SnapOrigin: BottomRight
    SnapShadow: true
    SnapShadowTrans: 200
    CaptionOnHover: false
    end
    table Actions
    Lock: control right doubleClk
    Reload: control left doubleClk
    Drag: control middle hold
    EndDrag: control middle singleClk
    Execute[0]: left singleClk
    Execute[1]: right singleClk

  • Why is setting wallpaper impossible to get the picture to fit the screen, it completely ruins my pictures.

    Why is it impossible to set your wallpaper without it being blown out of proportion and ruining perfect pictures.......

    Since the introduction of the parallax feature in iPad, resizing photos for background pictures no longer works.
    Higher definition pictures work well, but older smaller pictures don't.  One option that many do is open your camera roll and open the picture you want to use.  Size it the way you want and then take a screen shot of that picture, which will store in your camera roll and will work for your background picture.
    To take a screen shot hold your finger on the home button and then tap the power button and you'll hear your camera shutter take the screen shot.

  • Setting font in emacs-cvs [solved, sorry]

    Hai.
    I've installed emacs-cvs to see the new features that'll be present in the new version and because I wanted to try the --daemon mode. So far, so good. The problem is that it won't use the font I want it to use if I start a new frame with 'emacsclient -c'.
    The relevant part of my ~/.emacs is a single line:
    (set-default-font "Envy Code R-8")
    If I start emacs with 'emacs', then it shows up using this font. If I run 'emacs --daemon' and then 'emacsclient -c', it loads up using the font set in my ~/.Xdefaults ("*font: -*-proggytiny-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*"). And yes, I've restarted my emacs daemon after changing ~/.emacs.
    Does anyone know how to solve this?
    Edit: I should've searched better before, sorry. I should've used
    (setq default-frame-alist '((font-backend . "xft")
    (font . "Envy Code R-8")
    (cursor-color . "white")))
    instead of that single line.

    I utilize my .Xdefaults to set my emacs font.
    Depending on how I'm feeling, here's a list of fonts I've been fond of using:
    % grep emacs .Xdefaults
    !emacs*font:-misc-fixed-medium-r-normal--14-130-75-75-c-70-iso10646-1
    !emacs.font:consolas-10
    emacs.font:dina-10
    !emacs.font:Terminal-10
    !emacs.font:DejaVu Sans Mono-11
    xrdb ~/.Xdefaults and reload emacs.

  • Wallpaper issues under openbox

    I know how to set the wallpaper (in a number of ways, even). That's not the issue.
    I'm running Arch under VirtualBox, with the guest additions installed. This allows magically setting the resolution when I change the size of the virtual screen. Unfortunately, this does not update my wallpaper's aspect ratio, so the wallpaper tiles rather than zooming to fit. How do I fix this?
    For reference, I'm setting my wallpaper with
    feh --bg-max ~/wallpaper-377161.jpg
    Sorry if this is the wrong place to ask, and thanks in advance.

    Hi guys, this is my first post here so be nice!
    I've been agonising over this small detail for a few days now, whilst trivial I NEED feh to reapply my wallpaper when I resize my VB window - as Deltadesu mentions above feh applies the wallpaper based on the 'current' screen size, so any resolution > than the current resolution, the wallpaper tiles.
    I have read about calling feh from VBoxRandR.sh - but as this doesnt exist any longer I'm stuck!
    Cheers in advance :]

  • After upgrade to iOS7, photo app and setting wallpaper is too unconfortable!!

    I totally love new iOS 7.
    But some things have to need to change.
    Especially when I used photo album, it was too unclear and not simple.
    I also don't like that I can't resize my photo before setting as a wallpaper.
    Even I used iOS 7 less than one day, I saw several things that need to change.
    I hope that apple make ios 7.1 version asap.
