Setup of mac os xserver

I am trying to setup Mac OS xserver in my home so that the machines in my house can authenticate to the server and share resources such as hard disks attached to the server.
I have OS Xserver 10.4 installed on an intel laptop
! have five client machines (running 10.4) that I want to authenticate to server.
All machines have IP addresses manually configured
what services will I need to configure and in which order. Where can I find configuration advise for these services.

You can search through this discussion, there's lots more detail that I'm willing to re-write
The basics, install the server OS, run setup assistant, make it a standalone server turn on DNS (no other services yet) configure DNS (you can use the serveradmin GUI for your purposes). Once DNS is set you would make it an OD master, turn on AFP, and you can then create users and shares.
As a note, you may be able to skip setting up DNS and making it an OD master if you just want to share files.
You'll need to setup the LDAP plugin in DirectoryAccess on the clients to force them to authenticate via the server.
You really ought to have a static IP for your server, so let your router do NAT for you - this will simplify your configuration on the laptop/server.
I've been a bit fuzzy, because I'm sure exactly what you want to do, but this shoud be enough info to get you in the right direction, and searching through the info that's already on this board.
And I don't mean to imply that you shouldn't post more questions here - I'm just trying to get you pointed in the right direction so you can ask more specific questions.

    Hi All,
I setup 2 Mac Minis, 'setup in a no-apple id. Now with Mini1 I installed a shared printer from Windows7 Pc it ask for credentials then I input Adminstrator account and the password ticking the remember in "keychain"
I run a test print and its seamless. I reboot the Mini1 and run test print again and its good.
Now in Mini2 I did the same installation on shared printer but it is asking for user credential again and again, there is a check mark in "remember in keychain but still gives a notice that "requires authentication" I put the admin creadentials same with Mini1 then it prints.
every time I print on Mini2 its always asking for a user & password before Printing. How can we fix it.
    I tried
    - lpd printing = "authentication required"
    - reset printer settings ang re-install printer = "authentication required"
    - replace sharename in windows7, reinstall printer in Mini2 = "authentication required"
This stuff never happened to Mini1.

when i go onto system preferences the icloud button isnt there how do i get it there so i can setup my mac on find my iphone

You have to have 10.7.2 to have the iCloud icon appear.
You need to upgrade to Lion, via download from the app store, $29 (US).

  • I'm trying to access a Mac OSX xserve's shared folder from a windows xp pc

So I'm trying to access the Shared Folders on a Mac OSX Xserve Server. this server does not provide authentication or home folders, etc. Pretty much using it for network storage. I've been able to successfuly connect to the folders using Windows 7, but the Windows XP computers will not connect. I keep getting a "You might not have permission to this folder" etc dialog box popup.
This is my method of connection. Start -> Run -> \\1.1.1.1 -> Enter.  I see the folders. I double click on the folder icon to access the folder, i get a login dialog box. On the Windows 7 machine I typed in my LOCAL MACHINE'S username and password. Success! On the XP machine, I do the exact same thing and receive the error.
    please Help!
the Macs on my network (96% of users) have absolutely no problem connecting to the server using ⌘K in Finder

Try mapping the drive as normal and then see what happens.

During the initial setup of mac book pro, I did the pc to mac transfer. After transfer was complete, mac had two user accounts aspen pc machine? and dell. Upon trying to access either, the mac says I have to enter new password to enter. It will not accept new password. What do I do?

Well....I bit the bullet and called Apple tech support this morning and agreed to pay my $49 for the tech support. I ended up talking to a Boot Camp specialist. In the end his position was that "they didn't support Windows" and my particular problem was a "Windows problem". I countered with the fact that they advertise that one of their selling points was that Windows could run on an Intel Mac and that I ought to at least be able to install Windows. They said that most people were able to install Windows with no problems. I agreed, but told them that, after searching the Internet, I had read numerous posts from folks that had the same problem and that Apple really should address it. They were very polite and even agreed not to charge me the $49, but their final position was that it was a "Windows problem."
I guess that at this point I'll try to return the Windows disk to Amazon and see if they'll give me a replacement.

  • But I can't find something similar in the printer setup under Mac OS. Any idea?

Got a problem with connecting my daughter's Macbook to a HP printer in the LAN at home. For PC running on Win7, I can specify the printer's TCP/IP port under printer setup to establish the LAN connection. But I can't find something similar in the printer setup under Mac OS. Any ideas? Thanks

It looks like the developer's of that app, or Apple, have got the wrong search name for it in the store - you could try contacting the developer and pointing it out to them so that they can get it corrected. Currently it looks like you can only find the app either by using the link (as you've included in your post), or by searching for the developer's name (Page Foundry Inc) in the store.
For searching the store, when you search for something then the first result(s) should be those whose title matches what you searched for - so if you search for 'ebook reader' then as there is an app with that exact name it will be first in the results, other apps will then be listed after it.

  • Mac pro xserve 10.6.8 AD and SMB issue

    Hi,
I have configured Mac OS XServe 10.6.8. This Server is joined with Windows 2008 AD Server.
    I have done coming below:
    1. Server Admin.app
    2. File Sharing -> careated new share folder "test". This folder is located this path "/Volumes/Macintos HD/test"
    3. Under Permisstion tab i have clicked + button, then i got new tab "Users & Groups". Their i can see all my windows AD users.
    4. I have selacted my user name and two more users full access.
    5. Then i have enabled AFP and SMB protocols.
    6. Then i have saved the configrstion.
    7. Then i went my mac book pro laptop i tryied connect to server afp://192.168.1.5/test
    8. I can access the share Folder.
    9. Then i have tried smb://192.168.1.5/test
    10. User Name and Password not autendicating.
can some please help me how to resolve this issue.
    Thanks

Before upgrading to Lion, I would recommend playing with OpLocks on the SMB share. Oplocks will not allow access to a folder if it is use by another share. Try turning these off and on and making sure that nobody is connected to the share by either protocol.
    Worth a shot.

  • HD setup in Mac Pro to be used as Server

I've searched through the various hard drive posts here on the lists, and think I am actually more confused than I was before.
We are currently running Tiger Server on a Dual 2 G5 and are preparing to migrate to Leopard Server on a new 8-core Mac Pro (I wanted an Xserve, but given the tight purse strings lately, will happily settle for the Mac Pro!!). I will be doing a clean install and then migrating settings, accounts, etc. over to the new machine. I'm solid on server administration, but not so much on the nuances of various hardware configurations. I've been trying to figure out the best hard drive setup, but have quickly become confused by the overwhelming abundance of (and occasionally conflicting) recommendations out there.
I've seen some who swear by a RAID 1+0 set up {two sets of mirrored drives that are then striped...or is it a set of striped drives that are then mirrored?!? You can see my dilemma...}, while others swear off of such a setup; lots of STRONG recommendations in favor of a small OS disk and second data disk (perhaps a solid state drive for the OS and a regular drive for the data?); even recommendations for multiple drives with 2 partitions that are RAIDed in ways that made my eyes bleed just trying to figure them out.
Bottom line: what would you recommend hard drive wise for a Mac Pro that's going to be a primary server for a small private school? I would like the best combination of reliability / uptime and speed. Assume anything is possible (within reason--obviously a 16 bay external RAID is out of the question), and, if possible, include specific drive recommendations (I've seen LOTS of posts steering me as far away from Seagate as I can get because of high failure rates / firmware issues...any thoughts on the WD Caviar Black vs. the WD RE3 Enterprise?).
Thanks in advance for any help you can provide.

Hi, I posted a threaded awhile back about my experiences setting up our small office servers. Perhaps some things might help you in your project.
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1697924&tstart=0
Note, on our archive server we are running is a raid 10. However it is running on 10.4.11. If you are running leopard, it probably might not be a good idea.
    Main server: G5
    OSX Server 10.5.7
    boot drive = raid 1
    data drives (x8) = raid 5
    Arch server: G4
    OSX client 10.4.11 (using sharepoints)
    boot drive = raid 1
    data drives (x10) = raid 10
I also STRONGLY recommend AGAINST seagate drives, especially the deadly 7200.11 and ES.2 drives. They are a firmware hassle, and not worth any discount prices of what they are being offered at.
On my raid 5, I've lost 2 drives (within 10 mins of each other 0_0) crushing the raid to pieces.
On my raid 10, I've lost 2 drives. I'm scared to restart or shut down the computer, as this is I guess the issue with the seagate firmware(s) in question. Drive data is intact, however are not recognized, thus degrading the raid.
If you buy external enclosures from sonnet w/the drives (which is good as they come with free advanced replacement; great service) call them and see if they can give you WD RE3s instead. A much better drive.

  • Dual Monitor setup for Mac Mini???

I just bought a VGA Y-cable and split my monitor signal to two monitors. Unfortunatley the same thing is displayed on both screens where as I was looking for an extension to my desktop.
I found this http://www.national-tech.com/catalog/dvisplitter.htm (the top one for $ 146)
I was wondering if I split the signal with a dvi splitter rather than a vga splitter if i could have a dual monitor setup with more screen space...
    Thanks,

  • IPod setup on Mac now needed for PC with Vista

I have had my iPod setup on a Mac and now am using a PC with Vista. I installed iTunes 8.x and when I connected my iPod I was informed that it had to be reformatted for use with Windows.
This iPod is packed with music. Is there any way to salvage the content on this iPod?
    Any help greatly appreciated!

You might be able to do something with a 3rd-party ipod manager, but I suspect they are also either Mac or Windows-based, as in either/or and not "works with both". Here is a good page to start researching it.
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Comparisonof_iPodmanagers
I would steer clear of the free ones. Also, and contact the company who sells whichever one you choose to make sure it can do what you want.
And you could see if any of your friends have a Mac, just to get the music files off the iPod and then put back on after you've Windows-formatted it.

  • Dual HDMI monitor setup on mac mini late 2012

    Hey there
i just purchased a late 2012 mac mini and two of these monitors:
Amazon.com: AOC IPS i2367Fh 23-Inch Screen LED Monitor: Computers & Accessories
They only have HDMI and VGA connectivity - my question is, whats the best way to setup these monitors? I take it i will want to stay away from the VGA and will need an HDMI adapter to thunderbolt?
so, one monitor connected straight HDMI to HDMI and the 2nd monitor HDMI ---> HDMI/MiniDisplay port adaptor? Any recommendations for the adapters/cables? Not sure what if i need male/female ect.
    Thanks!

Yes, yses  the HDMI out on the Mini for one monitor and a mini display port to HDMI for the other monitor.

  • How do you setup a Mac Mini Server online? eg: no linked screen

I was told in a Mac Store you can set up a Mac Mini Server online. So no need to have a screen connected.
There's nothing in the paperwork that comes with it to say how to do so if you can. I have an iMac setup right next to it for going online or screen sharing etc.
Have I been misinformed or am I just being slow?!
    Thanks in advance

    Mark-THP wrote:
Bit late now as I have the screen, but out of interest how do you boot in FireWire Target Disk Mode with no screen?
    Thanks
Second Mac is running 10.6.8 though.
You would have to plug a keyboard in to the Mac mini but would not need to connect a mouse or screen. You then hold down Command-T on the keyboard after turning the Mac mini on and before it boots. Keep those keys held down for about 10 seconds - that should be long enough. If you had a screen connected you would then be seeing the special FireWire symbol bouncing around the screen. This means the Mac is in FireWire Target Disk mode and is effectively a glorified external hard disk.
The fact the second Mac is itself running 10.6.8 is not important. As long as it can boot in to Lion it will be able to boot from the Mac mini which is acting as an external hard disk. On this second Mac you would plug a FireWire cable from the Mac mini. Then you would hold down the Option key and start the second Mac up. After a few seconds you should see it is in a new different mode which should list all the different bootable disks it can find, including the Mac mini which remember is acting as an external hard disk. You would then select the Mac mini disk to boot from.

  • Initial setup on mac mini server without monitor?

I have bought a mac mini lion server today. I do not have desktops in home, so no monitors.
How can I setup/login into it? I tried Server Admin Tools, but I do not have root password (tried blank and serial number).

I have a MBA late 2010. So, no thunderbolt.
I was hoping connect to it using ssh to execute initial setup to be abble to use remote admin tool.
The problem is that ssh do not accept root connection.
Since I do not have any display at all, the idea would be to turn the server on and setup it. Since it is a server I thought I could do this without any issue.
Linc. In your idea. How should I start mac mini in disk mode and how can I boot the MBA using mini internal drive?
    Any ideas?

  • C6180 does not appear in my list of printers in Printer setup utility (mac OS X 10.4.11)

My C6180 was printing slowly so I followed the steps in the forum (unplugging, holding down the buttons, etc. ... Shut down, restart, etc.) Now it doesn't appear in my list of available printers when I try to set up again in the Printer Setup Utility. My software is updated. How to I get it in the list. I've been around in circles and I may have messed up some settings in trying to solve this. I have to print stuff for work. Freaking out a little. Help.

  • How to setup a mac for a friend

In just a few hours my adult daughter's new MacBook Air-13" will arrive at my house.  She lives in Africa but will visit us in 2 weeks so she had her new MBA shipped to my place.  But she's not familiar with Macs and she wants me to set-up her MBA with eMail, iCloud, a bunch of programs (all pre-purchased, licensed etc) - i.e. she would like me to have this running 100% when she arrives in a few weeks.  (And I'm more than happy to have the chance to try a new MBA for 2 weeks!! - Likely I'll find it hard to go back to my MBP-13" core duo 2!)
OK I have her GMail account and password for that.  But I want to set up her MBA as a new computer (because it is - she only has data to import from an old PC, not a Mac) - but I want this to be 100% her computer, not connected to my iCloud or other accounts.  I imagine I can set-up an Apple Account for her?  (Can I setup a USA account for her?  I live in Belgium now (where she will be visiting) but we are US citizens - yet she is currently living in Liberia, Africa).
So do I just follow the installation steps?  Will MAIL let me set-up her eMail (of course for now using my internet / WiFi connection at my house -but eventually she'll need to change that when she goes back to her place)
And if I want to import photos - I imagine I can just set-up iPhoto and it will import from one of my external HD's where I have photos?
Is there anything that might be "tricky" or ??
This MBA should come with LION installed (I'll run SoftWare UpDate but should be 10.7.4 etc.) - however before she leaves (29 July) Mountain Lion should be out and she gets a free upgrade.  I imagine I can just do that for her / with her when it is out?
    Any comments appreciated.
    Thanks,  Steve
    Monday 2 July 2012

Just follow the on-screen instructions and it will be fine. Obviously you need all her settings and preferences though so it may be wise to have her on the phone while you're doing it.
