  • Protect single instance linux Oracle 11Gr2 with Clusterware 11Gr2 non-RAC

    Hi All,
    I saw this link, but it mentions RAC as a solution:
    Using Oracle Clusterware to Protect A Single Instance Oracle Database 11g
    I have seen various articles about protecting single instance with cold failover using clusterware, but they mention scripts and older versions of Clusterware. I am trying to figure out if possible to incorporate virtual ip's / scan listeners or if this is even a supported configuration...
    I have set up clusterware 11gr2 using OCFS2. I basically just want to do a cold failover from one node to the other, and I do not wish to purchase a RAC license...
    thanks much

  • Directory Setup for RAC and Oracle Restart

    I have three database installations that I'd like some insight on the initial directory structure and permissions. The three installations are:
    1) Prod RAC - OEL 5U2, 11.2.0.2 Grid Infrastructure, 11.2.0.2 DB EE with RAC option
    2) Test RAC - OEL 5U2, 11.2.0.2 Grid Infrastructure, 11.2.0.2 DB EE with RAC option
    3) Single Instance - OEL 5U2, 11.2.0.2 Grid Infrastructure Standalone (Oracle Restart), 11.2.0.2 DB EE
    The they all have two users GRID (for Grid Infrastructure Software Owner) and ORACLE (for Oracle Database Software Owner).
    We had a consultant install the databases. It's very weird since we have an inconsistency in directories and permission. I want to understand the inconsistency between RAC installations as well as Oracle Restart Install.
    SEE BELOW: The two RAC servers have different owners for /u01/app/11.2.0.2 directory. The Oracle Restart Installation - Single Instance has the same owner as Prod RAC but different than Test RAC. What the consultant said was that ORACLE_BASE would be /u01/app/oracle for both Grid Infrastructure and Database installations. This was to apply to TEST/PROD RAC (3 node, 3 instances, 1 instance/node) and Oracle Restart installation. The GRID_HOME would be /u01/app/11.2.0.2/grid and ORACLE_HOME would be /u01/app/11.2.0.2/db_1. It seems like the owners aren't setup correctly. Why? I don't want problems with patching or upgrading. If this setup is technically incorrect what is the best way to setup so there's no owner/permission issues. Is it necessary to have two separate ORACLE_BASE's like /u01/app/grid?

    Thanks so much.

    Hello
    I did only check prod, as that is the important one.
    i am afraid that setup is not clean. I won't use the work is wrong, but need to be normalized.
    grid oracle base need to be separate from oracle oracle base, and the grid oracle home, MUST be outside of oracle base/oracle home of the oracle user.
    In a multi user setup, the structure should be as follow.
    grid user, group oinstall, asm* groups
    oracle user, group oinstall, dba and db* groups
    The GRID install, have, grid home and oracle base
    the oracle base for grid should be, /u01/app/grid
    the grid home should be, /u01/app/11.2.0.3/grid
    the Oracle user have several homes, and oracle base
    the oracle base for oracle should be, /u01/oracle
    so, for permissions, when I create this, i do as root
    mkdir -p /u01/app/11.2.0.3/grid
    mkdir -p /u01/app/grid
    mkdir -p /u01/app/oracle
    mkdir -p /u01/app/oraInventory
    chown -R grid:oinstall /u01
    chown -R oracle:oinstall /u01/app/oracle
    then, you install grid .. you have so say oracle home is /u01/app/grid and oracle home is /u01/app/11.2.0.3/grid
    at the end, the root.sh as part of the install will take care of the permissions for oraInventory, and the rest for grid.
    when grid is installed, you can move to the oracle db install you use oracle base as /u01/app/oracle and oracle home as /u01/app/oracle/product/11.2.0.3/dbhome_1
    that will give you
    2 4 drwxr-xr-x 6 root oinstall 4096 Sep 21 03:20 /u01

    Each user have to use his own oracle_base, as each oracle_base will store files and folders created for logs, admin, diagnostic with different permissions and different usages, for a reason you have role separation.

  • Receive attachments with AS2 in Oracle B2B

    Is it possible to receive files (.doc, pdf etc..) as attachments when using the AS2 message protocol? If so, how to setup in Oracle B2B?
    Thanks for your help.
    Raja

    Anuj,
    As per your blog on sending attachments in ebMS, I setup the attachment.xsd and the corresponding xml file as follows:
    <?xml version="1.0" encoding="utf-8"?>
    <Attachments xmlns:xsi="http://www.w3.org/2001/XMLSchema-instance" boundary="">
    <AttachmentPart>
    <Location>file:///home/rramanat/datafiles/EPCOD_PayableInvoice_PIDX1.2_Custom_123
    45.xml</Location>
    <Content-Type>
    <Top-Level-Type>application</Top-Level-Type>
    <Sub-Type>xml</Sub-Type>
    </Content-Type>
    <Content-Transfer-Encoding>8bit</Content-Transfer-Encoding>
    <Content-ID>1221</Content-ID>
    <Content-Description/>
    </AttachmentPart>
    </Attachments>
    The location of the actual attachment file has been specified as absolute path on the server on which the Oracle B2B is running.
    I put this attachment.xml file in a folder and configured B2B listener to pick up the file. The attachment.xml file gets picked up and transmitted to the Receiver Oracle B2B but I don't see the actual attached file in the attachments folder in the target system. The B2B property b2b.attachments.dir has been setup on the target Oracle B2B instance.
    Your help is appreciated.

  • Hosting two portals on a single instance of enterprise portal server

    Hi,
    We have a requirement to host two different portals on a single instance of enterprise portal server. The URLs to the portals would be different. Also for logging into the portal, one portal would have only User ID and Password and
    the other may have Retailer ID, User ID and Password for logging.
    I am trying to understand what kind of an approach needs to be followed. There
    is a single instance of Oracle server where PCD is stored.
    How will authentication/authorization happen and how would the user data be stored for both the portals in a single instance of Oracle database.
    Thanking you in advance,
    Regards,
    Veena

    Hi,
    in general,  could do that by using a distinct role concept. With the "Collection of base rules" you can assign different portal desktops with different layouts to everyone based on criterias like groups, roles or users.
    We have 4 very different portals running inside one instance. Every portal has its own standardized structure and is selected by logon groups, that points to roles, which points to desktops.
    What will not work is a logon concept other than "userid, password". SAP, by default. only allows standard authentication with userid and password or ticket. Even if you use an LDAP that would have that distinction, you cannot query that property without modifying the system
    If you want to use anything different, you have to write a new logon handler for the logon stack (using JAAS). This is tricky, but not outrageous difficult. We have implemented three different new steps in the logion stack, each handles a different case, from ip-based logon, ticket or LDAP query. It is possibly, all of them don't have more than 20 lines of java.
    But, still tricky.
    It is a broad theme and you can try it out with showcasing two different desktop themes belonging to two different roles. Than you can work your way through tge problems.
    In terms of database, it makes no distinction. You work solely with the PCD, and that is stored in the database. We are using DB2 and I've never touched the DB at all.

  • Can we use Grid Infrastructure 11.2 to protect a single instance database?

    Hi all,
    I would like to use Oracle Grid Infrastructure to protect a single-instance database.
    I found these docs:
    http://www.oracle.com/technetwork/products/clusterware/overview/em-db-failover-128585.pdf (for 10.2)
    http://www.oracle.com/technetwork/products/clusterware/overview/si-db-failover-11g-134623.pdf (for 11.1)
    I was unable to find a similar document for GI 11.2 . Do you know if such a document exists?
    At the moment I only know that the GI is free if used for an Oracle Product, but I am not shure whether it can be used to protext external applications or single-instance databases
    Andrea

    Hi,
    while this still works (the scripts for failover you find in the demo folder $GI_HOME7/crs/demo/coldfailover), the document does not exists, since with 11gR2 there is a supported solution called RAC ONE Node, hence rendering the manual setup obsolete.
    For more information see:

    Hi,
    Kindly show me the essentails required to setup multiple instances in Oracle 9i rel2.
    in another words, i would like to create two schema/users in the same name in oracle. One schema will be used to do software testing and another used as either backup or online database.
    Thanks
    SCIL

    Could you please look into the problem in detail.
    1.     I have a production database in the schema scil_eu.
    2.     I would like to host a test database in the same machine.
    3.     So what would be the schema name for this test database?
    4.     If I use, scil_eu, it will not allow since it is duplicated.
    5.     If I use a different name, like scil_test, then the following objects – indexes, triggers and etc would still be created in the online schema ie. Scil_eu.
    Please sugest a solution.

  • Streams Setup from RAC to Single instance

    Does anyone have a document to setup streams from RAC to Non RAC. I successfully setup streams on 2 single instances but I am having issues in replicating, Streams is setup on node1 or Rac and Apply process is also setup on single node. but data is not replicating.
    Appreciate any suggestions.

    From Metalink Note 418755.1:
    Additional Configuration for RAC Environments for a Source Database Archive Logs
    The archive log threads from all instances must be available to any instance
    running a capture process. This is true for both local and downstream capture.
    Queue Ownership
    When Streams is configured in a RAC environment, each queue table has an
    "owning" instance. All queues within an individual queue table are owned by
    the same instance. The Streams components (capture/propagation/apply) all
    use that same owning instance to perform their work. This means that
    + a capture process is run at the owning instance of the source queue.
    + a propagation job must run at the owning instance of the queue
    + a propagation job must connect to the owning instance of the target queue.
    Ownership of the queue can be configured to remain on a specific instance,
    as long as that instance is available, by setting the PRIMARY _INSTANCE
    and/or SECONDARY_INSTANCE parameters of DBMS_AQADM.ALTER_QUEUE_TABLE.
    If the primary_instance is set to a specific instance (ie, not 0), the queue
    ownership will return to the specified instance whenever the instance is up.
    Capture will automatically follow the ownership of the queue.If the ownership
    changes while capture is running, capture will stop on the current instance
    and restart at the new owner instance.
    For queues created with Oracle Database 10g Release 2, a service will be
    created with the service name= schema.queue and the network name
    SYS$schema.queue.global_name for that queue. If the global_name of the
    database does not match the db_name.db_domain name of the database, be sure
    to include the global_name as a service name in the init.ora.
    For propagations created with the Oracle Database 10g Release 2 code with
    the queue_to_queue parameter to TRUE, the propagation job will deliver only
    to the specific queue identified. Also, the source dblink for the target
    database connect descriptor must specify the correct service (global name of
    the target database ) to connect to the target database. For example, the
    tnsnames.ora entry for the target database should include the CONNECT_DATA
    clause in the connect descriptor for the target database. This claus should
    specify (CONNECT_DATA=(SERVICE_NAME='global_name of target database')).
    Do NOT include a specific INSTANCE in the CONNECT_DATA clause.
    For example, consider the tnsnames.ora file for a database with the global name
    db.mycompany.com. Assume that the alias name for the first instance is db1 and
    that the alias for the second instance is db2. The tnsnames.ora file for this
    database might include the following entries:
    db.mycompany.com=
    (description=
    (load_balance=on)
    (address=(protocol=tcp)(host=node1-vip)(port=1521))
    (address=(protocol=tcp)(host=node2-vip)(port=1521))
    (connect_data=
    (service_name=db.mycompany.com)))
    db1.mycompany.com=
    (description=
    (address=(protocol=tcp)(host=node1-vip)(port=1521))
    (connect_data=
    (service_name=db.mycompany.com)
    (instance_name=db1)))
    db2.mycompany.com=
    (description=
    (address=(protocol=tcp)(host=node2-vip)(port=1521))
    (connect_data=
    (service_name=db.mycompany.com)
    (instance_name=db2)))
    Use the italicized tnsnames.ora alias in the target database link USING clause.
    DBA_SERVICES lists all services for the database. GV$ACTIVE_SERVICES identifies
    all active services for the database In non_RAC configurations, the service
    name will typically be the global_name. However, it is possible for users to
    manually create alternative services and use them in the TNS connect_data
    specification . For RAC configurations, the service will appear in these views
    as SYS$schema.queue.global_name.
    Propagation Restart
    Use the procedures START_PROPAGATION and STOP_PROPAGATION from
    DBMS_PROPAGATION_ADM to enable and disable the propagation schedule.
    These procedures automatically handle queue_to_queue propagation.
    Example:
    exec DBMS_PROPAGATION_ADM.stop_propagation('name_of_propagation'); or
    exec DBMS_PROPAGATION_ADM.stop_propagation('name_of_propagation',force=>true);
    exec DBMS_PROPAGATION_ADM.start_propagation('name_of_propagation');
    If you use the lower level DBMS_AQADM procedures to manage the propagation schedule,
    be sure to explicitly specify the destination_queue name when queue_to_queue propagation has been configured.
    Example:
    DBMS_AQADM.UNSCHEDULE_PROPAGATION('source_queue_name','destination',destination_queue=>'specific_queue');
    DBMS_AQADM.SCHEDULE_PROPAGATION('source_queue_name','destination',destination_queue=>'specific_queue');, DBMS_AQADM.ENABLE_PROPAGATION_SCHEDULE('source_queue_name','destination',destination_queue=>'specific_queue');,
    DBMS_AQADM.DISABLE_PROPAGATION_SCHEDULE('source_queue_name','destination',destination_queue=>'specific_queue');, DBMS_AQADM.ALTER_PROPAGATION_SCHEDULE('source_queue_name','destination',destination_queue=>'specific_queue');
    Changing the GLOBAL_NAME of the Source Database
    See the OPERATION section on Global_name below. The following are some
    additional considerations when running in a RAC environment.
    If the GLOBAL_NAME of the database is changed, ensure that any propagations
    are dropped and recreated with the queue_to_queue parameter set to TRUE.
    In addition, if the GLOBAL_NAME does not match the db_name.db_domain of the
    database, include the global_name for the queue (NETWORK_NAME in DBA_QUEUES)
    in the list of services for the database in the database parameter
    initialization file.
    Section 4. Target Site Configuration
    The following recommendations apply to target databases, ie, databases in which
    Streams apply is configured.
    1. Privileges
    Grant Explicit Privileges to APPLY_USER for the user tables
    Examples:
    Privileges for table level DML: INSERT/UPDATE/DELETE,
    Privileges for table level DDL: CREATE (ANY) TABLE , CREATE (ANY) INDEX,
    CREATE (ANY) PROCEDURE
    2. Instantiation
    Set Instantiation SCNs manually if not using export/import. If manually
    configuring the instantiation scn for each table within the schema, use the
    RECURSIVE=>TRUE option on the DBMS_STREAMS_ADM.SET_SCHEMA_INSTANTIATION_SCN
    procedure
    For DDL Set Instantiation SCN at next higher level(ie,SCHEMA or GLOBAL level).
    3. Conflict Resolution
    If updates will be performed in multiple databases for the same shared
    object, be sure to configure conflict resolution. See the Streams
    Replication Administrator's Guide Chapter 3 Streams Conflict Resolution,
    for more detail.
    To simplify conflict resolution on tables with LOB columns, create an error
    handler to handle errors for the table. When registering the handler using
    the DBMS_APPLY_ADM.SET_DML_HANDLER procedure, be sure to specify the
    ASSEMBLE_LOBS parameter as TRUE.
    In Streams Concepts manual 10.2 chapter 22: Monitoring Apply
    Displaying detailed information about Apply errors.
    4. Apply Process Configuration
    A. Rules
    If the maintain_* procedures are not suitable for your environment,
    please use the ADD_RULES  procedures (ADDTABLE_RULES , ADD_SCHEMA_RULES ,
    ADD_GLOBAL_RULES (for DML and DDL), ADD_SUBSET_RULES (DML only).
    These procedures minimize the number of steps required to configure Streams
    processes. Also, it is possible to create rules for non-existent objects,
    so be sure to check the spelling of each object specified in a rule carefully.
    APPLY can be configured with or without a ruleset. The ADD_GLOBAL_RULES can
    be used to apply all changes in the queue for the database. If no ruleset is
    specified for the apply process, all changes in the queue are processed by the apply process.
    A single Streams apply can process rules for multiple tables or schemas
    located in a single queue that are received from a single source database .
    For best performance, rules should be simple. Rules that include LIKE clauses are
    not simple and will impact the performance of Streams.
    To eliminate changes for particular tables or objects, specify the
    include_tagged_lcr clause along with the table or object name in the
    negative rule set for the Streams process. Setting this clause will
    eliminate all changes, tagged or not, for the table or object.
    B. Parameters
    Set the following parameters after a apply process is created:
    + DISABLE_ON_ERROR=N Default: Y
    If Y, then the apply process is disabled on the first unresolved error,
    even if the error is not fatal.
    If N, then the apply process continues regardless of unresolved errors.
    + PARALLELISM=3* Number of CPU Default: 1
    Apply parameters can be set using the SET_PARAMETER procedure from the
    DBMS_APPLY_ADM package. For example, to set the DISABLE_ON_ERROR parameter
    of the streams apply process named APPLY_EX, use the following syntax while
    logged in as the Streams Administrator:
    exec dbms_apply_adm.set_parameter('apply_ex','disable_on_error','n');
    Change the apply parallelism parameter recommendation to a lower number.
    In general, try 4 or 8 and increase or decrease as necessary for your workload.
    In some cases, performance can be improved by setting the following hidden
    parameter. This parameter should be set when the major workload is UPDATEs
    and the updates are performed on just a few columns of a many-column table.
    + DYNAMICSTMTS=Y Default: N
    If Y, then for UPDATE statements, the apply process will optimize the
    generation of SQL statements based on required columns.
    CHECKPOINTFREQUENCY=1000
    Increase the frequency of logminer checkpoints especially in a
    database with significant LOB or DDL activity.
    exec dbms_capture_adm.set_parameter('capture_ex','_checkpoint_frequency','1000');
    5. Additional Configuration for RAC Environments for a Apply Database
    Queue Ownership
    When Streams is configured in a RAC environment, each queue table has an
    "owning" instance. All queues within an individual queue table are owned
    by the same instance. The Streams components (capture/propagation/apply)
    all use that same owning instance to perform their work. This means that
    the database link specified in the propagation must connect to the owning
    instance of the target queue. the apply process is run at the owning instance
    of the target queue
    Ownership of the queue can be configured to remain on a specific instance,
    as long as that instance is available, by setting the PRIMARY _INSTANCE and
    SECONDARY_INSTANCE parameters of DBMS_AQADM.ALTER_QUEUE_TABLE. If the
    primary_instance is set to a specific instance (ie, not 0), the queue
    ownership will return to the specified instance whenever the instance is up.
    Apply will automatically follow the ownership of the queue. If the ownership
    changes while apply is running, apply will stop on the current instance and
    restart at the new owner instance.
    Changing the GLOBAL_NAME of the Database
    See the OPERATION section on Global_name below. The following are some
    additional considerations when running in a RAC environment.
    If the GLOBAL_NAME of the database is changed, ensure that the queue is
    empty before changing the name and that the apply process is dropped and
    recreated with the apply_captured parameter = TRUE. In addition, if the
    GLOBAL_NAME does not match the db_name.db_domain of the database, include
    the GLOBAL_NAME in the list of services for the database in the database
    parameter initialization file.

  • Does Oracle RAC improve performance over single-instance db

    Hallo!i am running a single instance db that seems to be overwhelmed by workload as CPU is constantly 100% utilized despite code and instance tuning and users persistently complain of system slowness.
    It is our plan to uprgade to more powerful servers but would also like to implement load balancing to have 2 instances and 2 servers share workload via RAC solution.
    Some of peers state that RAC mostly a High Availability solution to enable continuity should one instance fail.I would like to know if db performance would improve on RAC as load balancing between 2 or more instances occurs in a RAC setup.
    Thanks.

It is not a mere high availability and redundancy architecture.
    BTW, a 2 node RAC is IMO not a "real" RAC... We also have one of those and I regret not insisting that it be, at minimum, a 4 node RAC - from both a redundancy/availability and performance/scalability viewpoints.
    Simple example - on our bigger RAC we are dealing with about 37000+ row inserts every second (3+ billion rows per day). This workload is only handled (on smallish dual 2-core CPU servers) due to RAC. No way that a single one of these servers would alone (as a single non-RAC instance) be capable to deal with that workload.
    So yeah - RAC is most definitely also about performance and scalability too. (but that does not mean it's a magic wand for solving your performance problems either).

  • Converting Single Instance database into Oracle Fail-Safe on Linux

    Hi All,
    We have single instance Oracle10g database running on Linux RHEL4. We are looking to convert this database into Oracle Fail-Safe (Active-Passive). Does any one have document for Oracle fail-safe setup?
    Regards,
    Tushar

    Tushar,
    you can't use software for windows on Linux.
    However, there's number of ways to implement high-availability solution on Linux Oracle.
    You can go with Active-Active (RAC) - which means that you'll have two servers attached to the same database at the same time. You can use either, and if one goes down(due to power failure for instance), the second will still be available.
    You can go with Active-Passive (Data Guard) - which means that you'll have one of the nodes being active and the second passive, but synchronized with the first one, so in case of failure of the first node you can activate the second one.
    You can also go with linux clustering - which is most similar to MCS + fail-safe - you'll have two nodes clustered with linux clustering software (RH cluseter suite for instance) and connected to shared storage. One node is active, and in case of crash database instance will be automatically started on the second node. This is beneficial because you can use your resources more efficiently. In case if you have two databases you can run each of them on dedicated server and then, in case of node failure move to another one. However, the setup of such configuration is quite cumbersome.

  • Moving from Oracle RAC to single instance

    Hi,
    We are running EBS R12 on windows 2008 R2. Its a 2 node setup, we want to move it to single instance.
    I heard that moving from RAC to single instance is not supported by oracle is it true?
    Can someone kindly guide me documentation for the same.
