Shadow and gradients slow page load...why?

I have read how shadows and gradients slow down a web site, and that you should replace them with (essentially) screen shots of the same (i.e. looks the same, but not using the shadow or gradient feature of iweb).
I understand that larger photos (etc) slow down a page load, but I don't follow why these do. I am curious for an explaination. It would seem intuitive that the apple folks would publish a web site in a way that did not cause this (i.e. covert shadows and gradients to jpgs or something).
thanks
bob

Shadows and gradients generally actually don't cause professional designers any issues, how you design it and what file format is important, most produce high quality images with a low impact to the web page load time. I have been designing for over 20 years and quite like iWeb challenges .
iWeb however does something quite different, it adds to an existing image, mainly using javascript which slows the rendering and page loads. iWeb works great for non professionals as it's dreadfully poor from a site point of view, remember iweb is a toy in the software world of web design tools, so enjoy it for what it is..
A simple way to prove is to design a single page in iWeb and the another using, say, Dreamwever, look at the rendering/load times.....

  • Server can't be found messages and real slow page loads or failing to load

I'm getting "server can't be found" messages and pages not loading happening alot lately. I thought it was the latest Firefox I had (1.5.0.2) but it's happening with Safari 2.0.3 as well. I thought it might also be my ISP since the cable modem line that comes in from the street now gets taped for my landlady's house for internet access as well as her tv service. I have had internet using this connection for about 3 years now and she has had tv service since before I moved in but only lately did she start to get internet access as well. I thought perhaps they screwed up something when they connected her to the internet as well. I live in a separate house a little back from the road than she does. (I haven't checked but I would assume there is only one cable feed coming to her house. Mine got split off of hers and then is buried underground til it reaches my house. I want to look at the connections on her house and tighten anything that is loose too.) These slowdowns/can't connects happen when she is not home so we can rule out her using the line causing trouble.
With all these clues, what do you think it can be? I'm visiting sites I've always visited, not new ones. I let autocomplete pick the URL so the URLs are all from my current bookmarks and are places I go all the time.
Pages tend to either load right away or they take forever. I'll get some progress on the location bar (with Safari) or the progress bar with Firefox and then after a LONG wait (a minute or so), it will say it can't connect. If this was a car it'd be driving VERY haltingly. Refreshing either does nothing or loads the page instantly.
What do you think it is? the normal ups and downs of the internet or something wrong with a) my machine/OS or b) my internet connection. One change I've made lately are to use and then reset to default, Tiger Cache Cleaner's Optimize Tune for Broadband (and cache cleaner to troubleshoot a Yahoo IM problem which was solved by deleting all Yahoo IM related files and reinstaling the IM).
    Many thanks.

I looked at this thread: http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=453191&tstart=0 and it suggested I stop Safari from caching. I didn't see any way to do that without using something like what someone suggested elsewhere: Safari Enhancer (3.3). I set Safari Enhancer to Deactivate Cache. I also tried accepting All cookies; I'd had it set to only 'accept only from sites I navigate to'.
What do you know. My browsing is mostly fantastic! I've never seen a browser act so fast on a Mac. Over the years (since 1997 or so) I've used Netscape, IE, Firefox, Mozilla, iCab, Opera, and others but all were always sluggish (w/ OS 7, 9 and X on a 500 mhz Powerbook Firewire and this machine.). Now, pages mostly load - boom; I don't watch them load as I always did before. I still do get some that hang while the one remaining item out of the total loads but overall it is much better. No 'server can't be found messages' since doing this.
I am not certain that accepting All cookies has anything to do with this but I am pretty happy with turning the cache off. (I have a cable modem.)
    Maybe this will help others?
I'll keep posting if anything changes. I do look forward to going back to Firefox, assuming turning the cache off will be the cure there too, since it has the features I like but at least it is encouraging the Safari can be so fast. (And so far has better bookmark management than Firefox's which are horrendous.)

  • Slow page loads only since 10.4 upgrades

    Hi folks,
Has anyone seen a problem with pages hanging up after updating from earlier OS X's to 10.4? First my wife noticed it when she got her new Mac Book -- an upgrade from 10.2.8 on the old machine. A couple of items would load on a page, but then it hangs up and stalls for a while until finally fully loading. Ordinarily, I'd peg it as just being slow serving of ads to particular sites, but it's not always ad-rich sites. And more so, it's strange that this only started happening in conjunction with starting to use 10.4 to surf the same sites that weren't hanging up before.
Further confirming my belief that it has to do with 10.4, is that upon my upgrading from 10.3 to 10.4 on my G5 a month or so later, I started to immediately notice slow, slow page loads on that machine, too. Particularly, again, on sites that loaded fine with 10.3 just before the upgrade.
I'm also having more problems with mailboxes loading slowly and kicking off-line since the upgrade.
Is there some trick to get 10.4 to behave with regard to requests across the web??
    Thanks!!!!

me too. My mini is wired, but I have the same trouble. I have a PC on the same router, and it has no problem with internet. I've been looking around a while, and it seems like this is a common occurrence and I have not found a fix yet. This is very frustrating. Also, the network status in the network diagnostics window shows the internet failing alot, but even when it's "green" I still can't always load pages.

  • Slow page loading / Time outs

    Hi guys,
I am getting very slow page loading times. This only started to happen today, before this my connection has been solid.
I have reset the router, all the other PCs in my house are having the same problem. I am not running any P2P/Downloading software.
Speedtest says I am connected at 12MBPs. It takes me a very long time to load a page and most of the time they just time out.

  • Slow page loads over LAN with 500GB TC

    Hello,
Forgive me if this has already been touched on, I tried to run through the first six pages and didn't see anything that I thought matched my problem. I saw that there were reports of slow wireless speeds, but I have been experiencing problems over the wired connection to my TC
I have a MBP connected to the TC wirelessly and a Mac Pro with a wired connection to the TC. They both render similar speeds in a speed test ~4Mbits down, but on my Mac Pro, I get excruciatingly slow page loads. Pages often take, on average, 15-20 seconds to come up at all, and some more time to finish loading completely. Meanwhile, I can load the same pages in a few seconds with my MBP over the wireless network.
My cable coming from the TC to my Mac Pro is brand new, its at least CAT5e, and should be able to handle my down speeds without a problem. So I'm at a loss for what could be causing this. Could it be something with the computer and not the TC at all?
    Thanks,
    Scott

Well, creating a test user put me on the right path. Deleting the systemconfiguration folder did not help, but I deleted the following files out of the $user/library/preferences folder:
    com.apple.internetconfig.plist
    com.apple.internetconfigpriv.plist
    com.apple.internetconnect.plist
    com.apple.networkConnect.000a27b47970.plist
    com.apple.preference.internet.plist
    com.apple.PrefPane.Network.000a27b47970.plist
Basically any preference with "Network" or "Internet" in it and everything sped up immediately. Thanks for the help.

  • Premiere Pro CC locking up and very slow to load bigger projects

I am having a problem with premirepro cc locking up and very slow to load bigger projects.
    Windows 8 machine

I am having the EXACT same issue and now we are WAY behind deadlines.  We have Adobe for Teams on 3 computers, all are HPZ820, Dual Proc with Intel(R) Xeon(R) CPU E5-2650 @ 2.00GHz, 32 GB RAM, Dual Video Cards Quadro 6000 4GB, Windows 7 64 bit with all the latest patches.  Everything worked on the first release of 2014 but last week there was an "update" to Premiere.  Since this update, projects work for a short period.  When you start a new project and add footage, you can scrub the footage and play the footage with no issue.  But the more assets you add, simple Titles, it slowly starts to fail.  Playing the timeline starts and stops and then finally the end result is you can't even play the timeline.  The Program window is frozen.  I have even tested starting a new project, adding assets one by one but no matter what, I get the same results.

  • When I add pictures into MUSE , do the pictures resize for web quality (And so the page loads fast enough) or do I have to do this using an external software like photoshop, etc. ? Thank You

When I add pictures into MUSE , do the pictures resize for web quality (And so the page loads fast enough) or do I have to do this using an external software like photoshop, etc. ?
Also is there any way I can change the contact form email for all of my contact forms at once.
I have over 100 contact forms and i want to make them reach the same email anyway I can do that without going one by one?

If you have placed the image in Muse using File > Place and then scaled the image down in Muse while editing, then Muse publishes/exports the scaled down/optimized image in final output. When using as a Fill, the output size depends on the Fitting option you setup in the Fill options.
As for the contact form email, you would need to specify the email address for each form individually. There is no workflow to edit the same for multiple forms at a time.

  • Why is Spry Tabs dropping below content out of view and back during page load.

    Hello everyone, I'm having some
Spry Trouble. This is happening only in IE 7.
When the page loads, you'll notice that the tabs will
collapse before coming back to it's designated position.
This ruins the visual appeal. Again I don't know why this
happens but the tabs at the bottom of the content will quickly drop
below out of view and then jump back under the content.
    Here is the URL
    http://www.patrickjudson.com/weddingIndex2.php
Any ideas why this is happening?
    Thanks everyone - Patrick

I don't see the collapse issue on my end. About the only
visual thing going on is that the background image of the tabs
appears later than the text, but not sure that's an issue that's
particular to the Spry code on the page.
Perhaps it's related, or perhaps not, but in my IE7, I get an
error on the page. It states:
    Line: 48
    Char: 3
    Error: Object required
    Code: 0
    URL:
    http://www.patrickjudson.com/weddingIndex2.php
I only see HTML code at line 48 both in the source code, and
even if I pull the generated content view source from Firefox. I
checked line 48 of both of your attached JS files and neither
seemed to be an obvious issue. I even saved a local copy of the
page, and didn't get an error at all. The line of code in the HTML
does seem to be the end of the div that contains your music player,
maybe it's causing an issue in IE, not sure.

So why is there an error in IE7 saying object required.
What does this mean, and what are the side effects?
    Any idea?

  • I have just downloaded the latest version and some sites are part loading then taking ages to complete the page load. why and can you or I do anything about it please.

latest version loads the main banner of page then takes too much time loading the content of page > I have even had to stop the page loading and refresh before it will load properly> I did not experience this before installing the latest version the pages used to load insantaneously. I am not the only one experiencing this as my friend has reverted back to explorer.
Please can you do something about this.

It could be caused by a Firewall. Disable your internet security and then see if QT will open.
Are you an administrator account? It could be a permissions issue. Open the User Accounts control panel to see what type of account you have. Open the QT control panel to File Types. Does it show programmatically set? If so that will indicate permissions have been set by an administator.
Also are there too many applications running at once or loading at start up? Look down at the bottom right corner of the screen, is it loaded with icons? If so close them all out and stop them from running at start up, then see if QT will open. The only application that should load at start up is your internet security and maybe volume control, anything else you can open as needed.
If none of the above is a solution than I can help you uninstall QT and install, if so what version of QT is on the computer now. Open the QT control panel and click on About QuickTime

  • Firefox 4.0 keeps locking up and is slow to load pages

I just installed 4.0 this morning. Ever since, Hotmail is extremely slow to load, it keeps locking up or not responding.
I thought this was supposed to be faster and more streamlined?
Now, when I try to go back and install 3.6.13 it is no longer available. What gives? I want my old Firefox back.

  • Slow page loads

    Hello,
I created an application a while ago and have been looking into why the pages load so slowly. I thought maybe it was due to a function that I had on Page 0 so I made a copy of the application and removed the function on page 0 and put it in an application item/computation. I'm not sure if that was the reason behind the pages loading so slowly, but in my copy application the pages now load pretty darn quick. I made the exact same changes to the production application, but the pages still load slowly.
When I look at the pages in Debug mode, I see that it starts to slow down when the "Fetch application meta data" is performed (from .01 to 1.51...I even saw 2.67 on one page load). When I look at the copied application in Debug mode, everything looks the same except the load times are quick.
Does anyone have an idea as to why this is happening?
    Thank you,
    Tammy

Assuming the department names aren't needed for your page, you could add a condition to the function that makes it only fire on specific pages.
If they are needed, you're going to need to look at the query's performance and how the data is used on the page. I don't think we have enough information at this point to help.

  • Slow page loads, dropped connection

    Hi,
Looking for some advice here. I write for the web for a living, and spend most of my day online. I'm not happy with the speed of my connection right now, and am considering upgrading to a faster package. I'm currently on the 768k to 1.5Mbps DSL package.
The problem is, I don't get anywhere near the speed I'm paying for now. Page load times go from speedy to drop dead slow (20-30 secs), and often hang. I'm not sure what's going on, although I can say my mother has the same problems at her house (next town over, same DSL package). I can't see paying for a "faster" package when I don't even get the speed I should be now.
Here are some stats. Hoping someone can take a look and give me some thoughts about whether a speed upgrade would be worth it.

Has the line been performing any better since the last post? If not, find a time where it is working poorly and register an account over at DSLReports.com if you don't already have one. Fron there, visit their Tools section of their site and perform the Line Quality/Ping test. Be sure that before you start the test, your router/modem is not blocking Pings since this will result in the test having less data. Also, ensure nothing is using your connection before and during the time of the test being ran. Post up the results of the test once it has been completed.

  • Very slow page loading on Safari

I am having problems with my Mac. I am not sure if it is the Safari software or something else. For the past several weeks my computer has been very slow at loading pages, going to the next page, going back to a previous page etc. Can anyone tell me what I need to do or check to make it run faster. It used to run very fast. Thanks Vickie

I had a similar problem with Safari (or any browser) taking a very long time to load pages. Downloading files is fast (6 Mbit/s) so I knew my network speed was OK. I usually run wirelessly both at work and home and the problem was the same no matter where I was working. When I directly connected to an Ethernet line, browsing was fast again so I looked into the network setting for my airport connection and found I had switched the "Location" from "Automatic" to a specific DHCP setting. I don't know why but when I switched back to "Automatic" everything was fine again (super fast as before). Specifically, I just went to the "Apple" menu icon (top left and hit "Location->Automatic". That's all.
