Shake Workstation and Rendering Cluster Anyone?

We are a new company currently developing new products for the scientific community. During development (We are talking months here...), we can allocate time slots for Shake distributed rendering on our development cluster (19 ea. Xserve G5 Dual 2 GHz w/4GB RAM, 1TB Xserve RAID, Gigabit Network). Our cluster is located at a secured state-of-the-art Data Center in Southern CA. If needed, we can also offer a Shake Workstation on a Power Mac G5 Dual 2.7 GHz with a 30-Inch Cinema HD Display to work on at our office.
Is there anyone interested in such resources?
We will highly appreciate any suggestion about utilizing our development cluster to help Shake or any Apple Pro product users for that matter... We are looking into making it a win-win situation for both Apple Pro products users and for us...

Thanks for the report Mathieu, it was very helpful. We are going to go ahead and deploy Xsan here, with just a third of artists directly attached via fibre, and the rest of the artists and render clusters attached via NFS re-share. In the future we may expand that as well.
One question for you that is a little off the original topic:
You said you are using RUSH and AFP together? We had no luck with that combination, as the user who first logged in would control the AFP share, and no other user could render. Do you not see this problem?
For example, Users A and B have full read/write access to the AFP mount. User A mounts the AFP share, and everything is fine. From the terminal do a "login" using User B's credentials. Navigate to the AFP mount and try to read, make a directory, anything, and it is denied, although User B should have full access.
Our RUSH renders would always fail, unless everyone worked as User A, which is of course not desireable.
I'm interested in your experiences with this, as you guys appear to have great luck with AFP.

Leopard - QMaster and Virtual Cluster problem

Hi guys,
Up until yesterday I had my MacPro Octo running under 10.4 where I did succesfully set up a Virtual Cluster using 4 instances for Compressor. It worked as a charm and my MacPro was doing it's job perfectly.
Today, I made a bootable backup of my 10.4 install and installed 10.5 using the erase and install options ( clean install ). I installed all my software again and tryed setting up my Virtual Cluster again, using the same settings I had under 10.4. Sadly I can't seem to get it working.
In the QMaster Preferences pane, I have the QuickCluster with Services option checked. For the compressor entry in the Services I have the Share Option checked and used 4 isntances for the selected service. The Quickcluster received a descent name and the option to include unmanaged services from other computers is checked.
I have the default options set in the Advanced tab, ( nothing checked except log service activity to log file and Show QMaster service status in the Menu Bar). I then started the Cluster using the Start Sharing button.
Now I open u Compressor and add a file to process ( QT encode to iPod ), but when I hit the Submit button, my Virtual Cluster doesn't show up in the Cluster Dropdown. If I now leave the Compressor GUI open for 5 minutes, it will eventually show up in the list, and I can pick it. Sadly, picking it from the list at this point and hitting the Submit button makes Compressor Hang.
I checked my logs, but the only thing concerning Compressor I could find is this :

Batch Monitor immediately detects the cluster being active again, but Compressor doesnt, leaving me only This Computer available in the Cluster drop down when submitting a batch.
In my Activity Monitor, I notice that CompressorTranscoder is not responing ( the 4 CompressorTranscoderX processes are fine ) and the ContentAgent proces isn't responding neither.
Does anyone have any clue on what I could check next or how I could fix my problems ?

Bah, this is crazy, today it doesn't work anymore. Yesterday my cluster was showing up in the Dropdown window, and I could submit a batch to it, and it got processed over my virtual cluster.
Today, after finishing the second part of my movie, I tried it again. I didn't change anything to my settings, my machine hasn't even rebooted (just recovered from sleep mode) and my cluster isn't showing up at all anymore. Even the Qmaster menu doesn't show it
Guess, I'll have to wait out until it appears again, or try a few things out

hi, we've just got a 6140 and i did some raw write and read tests -> very nice box!
current config: 16 fc-disks (300gbyte / 2gbit/sec): 1x hotspare, 15x raid5 (512kibyte chunk)
3 logical volumes: vol1: 1.7tbyte, vol2: 1.7tbyte, vol3 rest (about 450gbyte)
on 2x t2000 coolthread server (32gibyte mem each)
it seems the max write perf (from my tests) is:
512kibyte chunk / 1mibyte blocksize / 32 threads
-> 230mibyte/sec (write) transfer rate
my tests:
* chunk size: 16ki / 512ki
* threads: 1/2/4/8/16/32
* blocksize (kibyte): .5/1/2/4/8/16/32/64/128/256/512/1024/2048/4096/8192/16384
did anyone out there some other tests with other chunk size?
how about tuning veritas fs and sun cluster???
veritas fs: i've read so far about write_pref_io, write_nstream...
i guess, setting them to: write_pref_io=1048576, write_nstream=32 would be the best in this scenario, right?

Wow! I think I had this same issue just last night.
I was cleaning my macbook pro retina on the outside. Then I opened it up and was wiping dust off the monitor and I can't pinpoint exactly when, but the colors changed suddenly. It looked super strange, it was like green halo's and it looked worse when looking at it at an angle. Of course I took no pictures!!! I was freaking out that my 2 grand laptop was busted and I somehow removed a protective film or something.
But I digress... The image looked very green and spacey, it was almost a neat effect. After about 5 minutes it started to look a little more digital though. There were straight lines of this halo effect on the edges and top. After about 10 minutes it turned into a predominate issue with the blacks on screen. I could open a web browser and it was unnoticable on a white background. After about 15 minutes, you could only barely see the green cloud effect if you looked at the monitor from an extreme angle. After about 20 minutes, it was completely back to normal, I almost feel paranoid like I see a halo or something strange. But I believe that might be all in my head now.
So yerp, lemme know what you guys figure out.

you should deactivate (help>deactivate) that installation on the old workstation. then download and install on your new work station using your serial number. (ie, make sure you can find your serial number - if you need help with this, let us know.)

Every backup replaces the old one, so, unless you included the backup folder in your computer backup routine, you can't get back your calendar info.
The only time iTunes will not replace a backup is, when you use it to restore from, this one will stay in the backup list in iTunes.

this one is actually a really rare symptom of a flaky connection to the ipod on a Windows PC. there's more going on in terms of hardware on nanos and 5th gens than in the earlier models ... so if the connection is flaky to precisely the right/wrong degree, itunes will see the ipod, but misidentify it as an earlier version of ipod.
tracking down the cause of the flakiness can be tricky ... as you already know ...
just checking. have you tried connecting with a different (known-good) USB cable? does that seem to have any impact on the rate of occurence of the problem?

I have looked at all of my settings both in Bridge and CS6 Photoshop regarding Camera Raw. I am at a loss how to set the crop tool in cm or inches as I once did - now the only option is to crop using ratios of 1:1 etc etc - This is infuriating as lots of my square crops I could set at 10" x 10'' specifically to print one to one to fit frame and mount size -
Now if cropping using bloody aspect ratio of 1:1 (square) the actual dims of the crop are roughly 4.25 inches x 4.25 inches. this means I then have to open the whole image in photoshop in order to crop at the dims I have set! It was so much quicker in terms of batch cropping in camera raw being able to set dims in centimetres and inches but they have gone and mucked around with it, with the new bloody update! Unless you are an absolute genius and know how I can go back to having an option of CM, Inches and aspect ratio within the custom crop settings? (Please say you do)

We are updateing from EP NW7.0 to NW7.3 and are facing a strange issue with html comment () in JSP files. It seems as in 7.3 html comment is compiled and rendered but of course does not work.
Is this correct or is it a bug?
