Shared Blog / Wiki Capability :)

I was just reviewing a BI blog that was on how to identify and solve some common load problems in the BW.
Was wondering if there isn't some way to collect some of these types of blogs postings so that rather than being splattered across several author's blogs.
Could a moderated shared blog be a possible answer, a wiki?  I suppose the author could try to pursue getting it published as an offical "How To", but these are usually a more modest effort.
I think what I'm looking for is a way to collect or index these helpful types of blogs.  It might be nice to be able to pull together good forum threads that also serve as reference material.
There are many options with the forum and blog features.  Just trying to find a better way that we can "harvest" all the knowledge that's available on SDN, and perhaps elsewhere.
Is it a wiki, is it a shared blog? Would it need to be moderated?  Maybe it's something along the lines of a dedicated area like the BW Performance Tuning Knowledge Center on SDN -   https://www.sdn.sap.com/sdn/developerareas/bi.sdn?page=bi_performance.htm
Any thoughts? Suggestions?

Hi Pizzaman,
Don't forget that there is the Weblogs by Topic area. There all the BI Weblogs are listed:
https://www.sdn.sap.com/sdn/weblogs.sdn?blog=/weblogs/topic/11
Does not help with all the great forum posts.
In XI Michal Krawczyk created an XI FAQ Weblog:
/people/michal.krawczyk2/blog/2005/06/28/xipi-faq-frequently-asked-questions that he is updating.
Great, but not ideal. So yes the Wiki would be the best.
One thing we are struggling with though is how to reward good contributions on a Wiki. After all it is often a collective thing. We can't keep an eye on every page and give points accordingly. But we would like to reward people for good content nevertheless. How to do that?
Ideas very welcomed, Mark.
P.S. I guess I will have to skip your pizza for now and will come back to you when I am one day in your neck of the woods

  • Help with remote access to blog/wiki/webcalendar

    Greetings, righteous Mac community.
I write to you as a brand-newbie in the Leopard server world, and I have found many posts here invaluable in helping me get setup and running. I have been unable to figure out getting the blog/wiki/webcalendar working completely, though, and any aid would be most welcome. Please keep in mind that 1 week ago I knew exactly nothing about running/configuring a server, so the simplest/dumbest/plainest answers would probably work best.
First, my setup. We are a small (4-client + server) network. Server is successfully configured with: shares all network clients can access; iChat & iCal servers; and Retrospect backing up everything.
We have an Airport Extreme routing our dynamic-IP DSL connection from Verizon. Static IPs on the LAN for all the clients along with port-mapping on the AEBS & DynDns service has enabled successful afp and vnc connections to the clients & server from outside the network as well as internal and external use of the iCal server through iCal. Also added a CNAME record at my domain host (MediaTemple) to point server.mydomain.com to the DynDns URL - so to do those afp and vnc connections I can type, for example, afp://server.mydomain.com:port in the Finder's Connect to Server window.
The sole remaining service I'd like to setup for now would be the wiki/blog/webcalendar. This seems to work fine now on the LAN when you type server.mydomain.com into Safari.
But no dice from outside the network. Verizon blocks port 80, so I've got to type server.mydomain.com:8080 into Safari, and I've mapped the 8080 port on the router to point at the webserver. So far so good - the browser displays the default home page, and shows a link in the right sidebar to the single group blog/wiki/calendar. But when I click on this, I am directed to server.mydomain.com:8080/groups/mygroup, but instead of the blog, I get a page with an error: Not Found, 404: No group with that name (mygroup) hosted on this server.
Any ideas about how to fix this? I've tried running the webserver on port 8080 and pointing the router to that to no avail. The fellow who's been helping me set this up wonders if the problem is that the URL still has that pesky :8080 in it, gumming up the works somehow. If so, is there a way to do some sort of Apache URL rewrite or DNS alias or something to fix it? By the way, that previous sentence demonstrates the entirety of my Apache/DNS knowledge (I know some terms, but not how to do anything), so please be super simple with any explanations!
Or is there something else I can try?
As a secondary concern, I'd like to make it possible to type server.mydomain.com from outside the network rather than server.mydomain.com:8080. I think you can do this too through DynDns, but I have not been able to figure that out. Priority, though, is on getting the wiki running well first...
Thanks so much in advance, wise friends. I'm excited to hear what you think.
    Sincerely,
    Willhaus

    Hi MrHoffman,
    Thanks again for the reply.
I hear you about Verizon. I checked in with them and they are indeed blocking port 80 and gave no indication that that would change without a considerably bigger package - not realistic or reasonable for our small studio. But the DynDns strategy seems to work well - I can successfully access the network remotely in many ways: vnc, afp, web, etc...
I got you about web clients needing to add the port to the URL. That's how I've been remotely browsing to the server to get the error I'm encountering.
VPN: Originally I wanted to set this up, but read some things about VPN not working through an AEBS. Maybe I'll return to it, but for now I want to focus on a non-VPN strategy. Partly b/c of the hassle (one thing at a time...) and partly b/c we'll probably be accessing this stuff from a variety of computers and wouldn't want VPN hassles to get in the way of simple web access.
As for the redirect, I tried your suggestions. What seems to happen, though, is that the browser just gets redirected to a new URL without the port reference, thereby resending the user to the Verizon-blocked port 80. That's why I was messing around with the proxy method before - I thought it might reroute the traffic to the correct port on the server machine without running into trouble with Verizon. I believe I was getting the Gateway error both in the browser and the logs (can't find it in the logs now, though). Anything else I could try with the RewriteRule method? It seems like once a user gets past Verizon and has access to the server, it ought to be possible to redirect that traffic to the correct Apache port to get the wiki to work. But I can't for the life of me figure it out.
I have new suspicion too: that this might have to do with the DNS setup on the server. I wonder because: when I go on the server machine itself and try to browse to server.mydomain.com or even www.mydomain.com (which should take you outside the LAN to the internet to deliver our website running on our host), I get a "Safari can't find the server server.mydomain.com" error. But if I input one of 2 IPs (10.0.1.201 and 127.0.0.1) I'll get taken to the proper server homepage. But it breaks on the group page just like remote access does.
So it seems to me that there must be something wrong with the DNS settings if browsing from the server itself doesn't find our externally hosted domain nor point itself to the wiki site that it hosts that works fine for clients on LAN. Maybe patching that up will fix my problem? Does it make sense that a DNS error might break the wiki but not break the personal blogs? Could anyone walk me through a simple DNS setup for the small network situation I mentioned in my original post? Please keep in mind that I know nothing about Primary/secondary zones, reverse lookup, reverse mapping, etc. Is there a simple way to describe everything I should see in the DNS section of Server Admin?
    Thanks a million,
    W

  • Reload group blog/wiki pages without restart Web server

Is it possible to reload the list of blogs/wikis on the web server without taken down the entire web server. I know in other version of apache there is the httpd reload command, but I am unable to find anything similar to it in OS X server 10.5.4. I have tried apachectl graceful but that doesn't reload the list of blogs/wikis.

It's not entirely clear what it is you're asking.
Are you saying you never want to see the filename in the address bar and that you want the address bar to always show http://intranet/blog/ ?
If so the simple answer is no - at least not with standard web programming. The only way you could is by using advanced techniques using DHTML/AJAX or something similar where you load content in the background and change the display rather than loading a whole new page. This is truly an advanced technique.
If my understanding of what you're trying to do is wrong, please post more details of what it is you're trying to do.

  • Leopard Server 10.4 Blogs/Wiki and Safari error with www alias and Log Out

I have a Leopard Server 10.5 setup with dns and web services including blogs and wikis setup. If I browse to http://hostname.domain.com/users using Safari 5.0.1, I see that the session is not logged in (i.e. Log Out is not visible. I can login and create a blog and logout with no issue. I can do this on Firefox and Camino as well.
Now, if I browse to http://www.domain.com/users however... the Log Out button is visible all the time in Safari 5.0.1 only - Firefox and Camino show the correct status of a non logged in session. In Safari 5.0.1 it is not possible to login to post or create a blog WHEN the www.domain.com url is used.
I have rebuilt Leopard server twice on a physical and a virtual machine for testing and can reproduce the exact same error. It's a mix of using www.domain.com and Safari. Any other browser works fine and ALL browsers work fine with any other alias pointing to the same site, including hostname.domain.com
Testing on Safari 5.0.1 on the server itself works fine. Testing on clients was on 10.6 and 10.5 and was performed on 4 separate client machines. Browsing on the server was fine but browsing on any client would produce the error when using www.domain.com.
If anyone can offer any suggestions, please help!

I tried several new approaches, but nothing worked so far.
The update to 10.5.5 made things worse. Connections are dropping all over the place, when saving from Adobe programs in particular.
Printing from clients to a Xerox Phaser 5500 works, but choosing a different paper size than the default chosen in the cups admin interface goes all wrong and either prints on the default paper size, but down/upscaled to the chosen paper size or prints on the chosen paper size and down/upscaled as if you were printing to the default paper size. (e.g. default paper size is A4, you choose A3 with an A3 document. Document prints on A4 and is downscaled to A4, or prints on A3 and is downscaled to A4.)
There is no way I can keep this thing in production much longer. I tried reinstalling again, but that did not change any behaviour. Another nice "feature": InDesign disables "edit original" when the path to the linked file contains any directoryname with more than 8 characters in length.
Coupled with a sometimes disappearing "dirserv" (it just stops working until I reboot the whole computer) the decision stands to move away from the Xserve.
Leopard Server 10.5.x just does not seem to work well with windows clients.
We will migrate to a windows server 2003 running ExtremZ-IP for the macintosh clients this weekend. Too bad that Apple does not allow Bootcamp to work on Xserves, at least the hardware would have been useful then.
(As a nice finishing touch, the harddisk partition where all data resides did become corrupt over the weekend. "The volume Daten could not be repaired."
Disk Utility and first aid did show nothing on friday ... saturday after no work being done on the partition this error shows up. The only solution I could find was to reformat the partition and restore from a previous backup. Another weekend down the drain. Sorry for the rant, but 6 weekends in a row is enough.)

  • WebCenter Spaces – Blogs & Wiki login prompt

    Hi All,
I have implemented a dev environment for WCS (patch set 2) and have set up the blog and wiki integration via the enterprise manager using the enterprise manager and generating a security map / key for the WebLogic domain and then
mapping this keys password into the service configuration as described here http://download.oracle.com/docs/cd/E14571_01/webcenter.1111/e12405/wcadm_wiki.htm#CIADBCHD in sections 19.2.2.14 and 19.3.1
    Farm_base_dmain/weblogic domain/base_domain
Right click - security / credentials
    Create map – owc_wiki
Create key – wsPasscode, type Password, User Name – weblogic, Password – abc123
    Farm_base_domain/WebCenter/ WebCenter Spaces/webcenter
    Right click – settings/service configuration
    Select wiki & blog server
    Add – boot_wiki, active, server url - http://wcs-demo:8890/owc_wiki, Passcode - abc123
When I access a blog or wiki page in a group space it prompts me for a username and password. I am assuming this behaviour isn’t correct and a user name / password should be passed to the blog and wiki server.
Do I have to do any additional setup or add page variables to do this?
    Cheers
    Bob

    Hello,
I have done the same thing as bob has done .I have created the key and registered the wiki blog server connection via em and referred to web center admin guide. But how to get the wiki page on my web center spaces . When i click on create a page and then to add content but i dont have any options there to select wiki/blog.I have done the same thing to create a discussion settings in which we can select discussion option in add content part BUT wiki/blog is not available.
    Please suggest!!!!

  • "What's Hot" from multiple blog/wiki sources

I am looking for help on how to have the "What's Hot" section of my sidebar in a custom theme pull recent changes from more than one blog. I have a site with multiple wikis and blogs for different departments I would like the sidebar to list changes from all of the blogs or wikis no matter which one I am currently viewing. Any help? My guess is to change the .plist file but coding is not my strong point.

That functionality is not supported in Leopard Wiki Server. You'll need to subscribe to one RSS feed for each blog. However, some RSS readers allow you to combine multiple RSS feeds in a single view, so that may do what you need.

  • Problem with sharing blog articles on Facebook

    Hi!
When we try to share our blog articles, Facebook doesn't seem to be able to fetch the titles, text and images from the individual blog articles. Is there anyway we can achieve this? We just wrote a post about us being Adobe Site of the Day, but when we try to share the link http://www.copycat.no/_blog/ccblogg/post/CopyCat_er_Adobe_Muse_Site_of_the_Day!/ on Facebook, all that shows up is the page title "CopyCat® | Blogg", a wrong picture and no text. What can we do to make Facebook find more information from the blog post?

As Liam suggested, in order to take the guesswork out of which data Facebook pulls from your page when you share it, you can take action and add <meta> tag data to your page that Facebook recognizes when you share it.
For instance, to make sure the right description is added, use this meta tag in the head of your html doc:
    <meta property="og:description" content="Your decription here"/>
Or to make sure the preview image is a specific one for your blog post:
    <meta property="og:image" content="http://mysite.com/myimage.jpg">
Note: For images, make sure to use the FULL ABSOLUTE URL with http:// or https:// in the og:image meta tag for it to work.

  • Scripting the Creation of Blogs & Apple Wikis

I would like to write a script to programmatically generate blogs & Wikis for the classes & teachers at our school. However I don't see any documentation on the editing of blogs on an Apple Wiki server.
Has anyone done anything similar? I tried simply copying an existing Blog, renaming it and the .plist file and restarting the wiki & web services.

Yeah, you could do that, an easy way would be use a csv file that has a column for each server and it's password. So the code would look something like this:
    Import-csv c:\servers.csv | foreach {
    #Create the account
    $username = "user1"
    $comp = [adsi] "WinNT://$($_.server)"
    $user = $comp.Create("User", $username)
    $user.SetPassword($_.password)
    $user.SetInfo()
    #Set password to never expire
    $ADS_UF_DONT_EXPIRE_PASSWD = 0x10000
    $user.userflags = $ADS_UF_DONT_EXPIRE_PASSWD
    $user.SetInfo()
#Add the account to the local admins group
    $group = [ADSI]"WinNT://$($_.server)/Administrators,group"
    $group.add("WinNT://$($_.server)/$username")
Here is a good explanation of using import-csv and how to setup your csv file:

  • Users cannot access blogs and wikis

None of the users administered in WorkGroup Manager (our students) have access to the wiki I created for them or log in to their 'my page'. Settings:
    - This wiki can be read and edited by anyone
    - Users must log in to write
    - Only the following users and groups can write (with the group of students in question entered)
What settings, in ServerAdmin or elsewhere, could I possibly be forgetting to adjust? Firewall, access, filesharing?
    Thanks for any leads!

NB: The issue affects new blogs/wikis as well as previously existing blogs/wikis, and new users as well as existing users. There is only adminstrator access.

  • Wikis and blogs are currently disabled..... but I enabled them.

Brand new Xserve, Server version: 10.5.2
I'm going out on a limb here and admitting that I have no idea what I'm doing. My employer bought into the "so easy a non tech person can do it" idea and bought an xserve to have wikis and blogs. The idea is to have one web page with links to departmental wikis and blogs.
I set it up as an Open Directory Master, created four dummy user accounts in Workgroup Manager, a Group called Blog and put those four dummy users into that Group.
Back in Server Admin, I enabled web services and started it. The default Apple provided default home page shows up fine when I go to the ip address in a browser window. Went back into Server Admin, chose the site I just added, clicked the Sites button, clicked Web Services and enabled blog, wiki and blog, calendar, clicked Save. Stopped web service and restarted it.
When I open the page in a web browser I get the Getting Status.... and then it says wikis and blogs are disabled, use server preferences (I can't find that anywhere) or Server Admin to enable. I thought I did enable it in the web services pane.
Any advice besides head for the hills?
    Thanks in advance.

    Changing the owner/group of wikis...
The Apple website for OS X.5 Server includes a basic primer on command line editing, you should go through it. That aside, you will need to know your administrative (root) password to accomplish this, if not, you won’t get past the first ‘su’ command. The following instructions assume you are using a completely ‘default’ setup and not trying to have your collaboration folders on another file system or anything tricky.
(FYI- as far as I know, none of the instructions I will put into the quotations will include the numeral one, they are all lower case “L”’s if it’s hard to read in this font.)
    1. Open the Terminal and drag the window as big as you’d like. Type “su root” and enter your root administrative password. Be very careful from this point forward as you can do a lot of damage.
    2. Type “cd /library”
    3. Type “ls -l”
    4. Look for the line which lists “Collaboration” in the right-hand column, it should read something like: “drwxrwxr-x 6 _teamsserver _teamsserver” in the first few columns. Everything should match except perhaps the number ‘6’. “teamsserver” is both the owner and the group for this directory.
    5. Use the same command to check each of the owner and group on the subdirectories and files of the subdirectories - they should all be owner and group of _teamsserver. Following is an example from my server, note that I do not precede the “collaboration...” with a “/”, this is because I am already inside the “library” directory.
    sh-3.2# ls -l collaboration
    total 8
    drwxr-x--- 4 _teamsserver _teamsserver 136 Apr 22 20:12 ArchivedGroups
    drwxr-x--- 3 _teamsserver _teamsserver 374 Apr 23 11:34 Groups
    drwxr-x--- 3 _teamsserver _teamsserver 102 Mar 14 21:43 Users
    -rw-r----- 1 _teamsserver _teamsserver 249 Feb 14 17:54 dataVersion.plist
    sh-3.2# ls -l collaboration/groups
    total 0
    drwxr-x--- 10 _teamsserver _teamsserver 340 Apr 22 21:02 pyrranwiki
    sh-3.2# ls -l collaboration/groups/pyrranwiki
    total 24
    drwxr-x--- 4 _teamsserver _teamsserver 136 Apr 22 20:13 discussion
    -rw-r----- 1 _teamsserver _teamsserver 5120 Apr 22 21:02 index.db
    drwxr-x--- 2 _teamsserver _teamsserver 68 Apr 22 20:12 mailinglist
    -rw-r----- 1 _teamsserver _teamsserver 484 Apr 23 11:34 metadata.plist
    drwxr-x--- 2 _teamsserver _teamsserver 68 Apr 22 20:12 public
    drwxr-x--- 2 _teamsserver _teamsserver 68 Apr 22 20:12 resources
    drwxr-x--- 2 _teamsserver _teamsserver 68 Apr 22 20:12 weblog
    drwxr-x--- 3 _teamsserver _teamsserver 102 Apr 22 20:12 wiki
    sh-3.2# ls -l collaboration/groups/pyrranwiki/wiki
    total 0
    drwxr-x--- 7 _teamsserver _teamsserver 238 Apr 22 20:12 welcome.page
    6. If you noticed any of these owners or groups showing something other than _teamsserver then perform the following command which will change the owner and group for the entire directory structure of /libaray/collaboration. (NOTE: Upper/lower case IS important here! NOTE: “teamsserver” has two “s”’s in it!):
    chown -Rv teamsserver:teamsserver /library/collaboration
If done right, you should have a list of directories and subdirectories spit back at you.
This may only solve some of your problems, if you have more, check out the discussion “Topic : Wiki - No group with that name hosted on this server?” where I posted a fairly lengthy set of instructions to solve a different wiki problem last night.
    Good luck!

  • Can we create a link repository here in SDN for Articles/Blogs/... ?

    G'day guys,
Is there a ways to create a repository of links within SDN for my userid?
I find articles/Blogs/Wiki's/.. etc that I want to come bacl to over and pver again, but the only options I see is the "Permalink" along with my Browser Bookmarks/Favourites.
Would it not be nicer to be able to log into SDN and navigate to your profile and have an area that has all your links to your "Found" and "want to keep" references?
    Just a uggestion.
    Comments?
    Cheers,
    Mick.

    A few tips:
For forum posts, you can use the "Watch this thread" option. Default is 90 days for a post you respond to. You can manage this via the "Your watches" in the "control pannel" but if you have many posts then accessing it can be a challenge. You can also do this without posting to the thread.
For blogs, you can choose the "Notify me of new comments..." option. You cannot do this without posting a comment, and if you post "asdf" then........
For wikis, you can activate a mail watch for changes. You can also do this without contributing to the wiki.
These three will send a mail to the primary ID saved in your profile, so you can read and react as soon as you read the mail.
An indirect "favourites" option is to go to the SDN Business Card of the author and add then as one of your favourites. When you want to check what they are up to, you can navigate to your own Business Card and then pick and choose the favourite user to see whether there is something new.
Some users have activated (not default) the "Watch this user" option in their profile. You can choose this, and it will send you a mail.
RSS feeds and watching twitter groups is another popular way.
If you are adventurous then you can also play around with the parameters of the search engine and save a constructed URL for some special terms which interest you. Search around a bit and watch the URL, the parameters and how it is overwritten, and then add the parameters back to tune it and save as a favourite /bookmark.
Personally, I use all of these - depending on the term.
    Cheers,
    Julius

  • Iweb'09 blog comments and google analytics

My apologies if this has been asked before.
My blog no longer allows comments. This occurred when I used the Automator program to add google analytics to my site. The good news is that google analytics does work. I host the site on mobile me so I have 2 questions
    (1) Is there a way to get google analytics to work and allow blog comments within a moble me hosted site?
if not, how can I remove google analytics to restore the blog comment capability and is there a monitoring package available within the mobile me world?
    thanks

I had the same problem. From the little research I've done it appears that you can't have the comments on and run GA at the same time. I have seen some messages on here that claimed to move a picture on the pages that had comments in order to restore the ones that were lost. I didn't have any luck with it.
Here's and interesting site that references it in the comments section.
