Shared DataSource

Now that SSDT BI has been released for 2014 for a while, is it possible for a single shared DataSource to be referenced/used across SSRS Projects?  If not, why has this functionality been added yet?  With all the power and functionality of Visual
Studio 2013 and TFS and the .NET Framework, I still find myself developing with one hand tied behind my back when developing SSRS.
The laundry list at this point includes:
There is no way for projects to reference one another to share common functionality
The Folder structure is flat which just causes clutter when projects start to grow more than 15 files
The core rs.exe deployment logic requires VB.NET when the majority of .NET development is done on C#
The version of .NET supported through RS.exe doesn't appear to be any greater than 2.0
The WebServer/Services are still running on the .NET 3.5 Framework
When deploying through SSDT, there is no way to indicate if the directories should be hidden or descriptions be added to reports

Hi Chritopher,
Just as you said, a shared data source cannot be used across projects in SQL Server Data Tools. It is a set of data source connection properties that can be referenced by multiple reports, models, and data-driven subscriptions that run on a Reporting Services
report server.
And the script must be written in Visual Basic .NET code, and stored in a Unicode or UTF-8 text file with an .rss file name extension when using rs.exe utility processes it. Other features you post are still not updated.
Personally, I understand your feeling and how frustrated when you find this issue. So, it is my pleasure to help you to reflect your recommendation to the proper department for their consideration. Please feel free to submit your situation on our product
to the following link:

Thank you for your understanding.

  • Shared Datasource Is Not Valid Error

    Using Reporting Services (SQL Server 2008 R2), I have a VS SSRS project with 23 reports, all running off the same Shared Data Source.  They all execute in VS.  I have deployed the datasource, datasets & reports to server.  From the Report
    Manager, I can execute all reports except 4, which have the same error:
    The report server cannot process the report or shared dataset. The shared data source '22d600c2-a3d5-4178-8a39-d05361607ebd' for the report server or SharePoint site is not valid. Browse to the server or site and select a shared data source. (rsInvalidDataSourceReference)
    I have tried the following, without success:
    1)verified that the datasource exists in the Data Sources folder, and is Enabled
    2) Checked and reset the Shared Datasource to point to the deployed datasource in the Data Sources folder
    3) Recreated & redeployed the datasource
    4) Deleted the 4 reports on the server and re-deployed
    5) Deleted the reports, used Upload instead of Deploy, then set the Shared Datasource to point to the one on the server
    6) Verified that the Link column in ReportServer.DataSource is NOT NULL.  Actually have the same Link as the other 19 reports.  Verified that the GUID in the LinkID exists in Catalog table and is the id for the Datasource.
    No matter what I have tried, for some reason, the GUID in these failing reports appear to get set to '22d600c2-a3d5-4178-8a39-d05361607ebd', which does not exist in Catalog table.  The other reports never fail, these reports never execute.  Anyone
    have any ideas?
    Victor

    As I recall, I went into the Report server db and updated the Catalog table.  Open the table and you'll find your reports listed with a link to their datasource (in the DataSource table).  I found the 4 reports that failed had a different value
    in the LinkID column than the reports that executed, even though they use the same shared datasource.
    So I copied the good LinkID value (a GUID) into the 4 reports that failed, and then they ran fine.    For some unknown reason, there was an invalid value stuck in the LinkID column which pointed to a datasource that really did not exist.
    Go figure.

  • Shared datasource using stored credentials still keeps prompting for password

    We have a reporting services running in sharepoint 2013 integrated mode.We have deployed a shared datasource and used a stored credentials to connect to an oracle database. However, whenever i try to build a report and use this report datasource, it will
    display a dialog box and prompt for the stored credentials password, and once the password has been entered, we can succeessfully connect to the oracle db and build our report. For security reasons, we can't divulge the password to the users.
    Is there anyway where reporting service will not prompt for the stored credentials password whenever we use this data source to build our report. We have already prepopulated the password in the data source definition page. Please help

    In the Shared Data Source, where you configured the name and password, there are two boxes that could be ticked:
    1. If the account is a Windows domain user account, specify it in this format: <domain>\<account>, and then select
    Use as Windows credentials when connecting to the data source.
    2. If the user name and password are database credentials, do not select
    Use as Windows credentials when connecting to the data source. If the database server supports impersonation or delegation, you can select
    Impersonate the authenticated user after a connection has been made to the data source.
    I'm not sure if Oracle allows for Windows authentication.  You need to tick one of these two boxes for the password to be passed through to the database.
    Cheers,

  • Why do shared datasources have to reside with the project?

    Background:
    SQL SERVER 2008 r2
    Visual Studio 2008
    I inherited a mess that I'm trying to clean up.  We have 8 projects for a single application and each one of these projects has its own solution.  I'm trying to create a single solution that holds all 8 projects with each project in it's own folder.
     I'm able to add all 8 projects to a single solution in Visual Studio but the problem I'm having is with shared datasources and datasets.  Every one of these projects is using a single datasource pointing to the exact same database.  When I
    add the shared datasource to the project it copies it to the project folder.  I end up with the exact same datasource in 8 different folders.  The same holds true for the datasets.
    The report server as a separate folder for the shared datasources and another for the shared datasets.  The reports are in their own folders.  How can I replicate this hierarchy in Visual Studio?

    Hi RayMajewski,
    Per my understanding that you have 8 projects and you want to move these 8 projects under a single solution, but now you have some issue with the shared data sources and datasets, right?
    As you know, by default when you create to add an new project, there will be three default folders under the project, if each 8 project have its own shared data sources and shared Datasets, when move to one solution, the shared data sources and
    shared Datasets will keep together under the project.
    Please reference to details information below to make sure you have move the project correctly.
    Copy the 8 projects to the solution folder in the local disk: .\\Visual Studio 2008\Projects\Solution2.
    Click the file and select the Open to open "Solution/Project" to add these project to the solution one by one:
    You will find the data sources and datasets move together under the project like below:
    If what you want is to replicate this hierarchy in Visual Studio outside the project, currently we couldn't find any good method to do this and it is not support to keep them outside of the current project. If all the 8 project point to the same database,
    you can just copy the share data source from one project to another project to create the same shared data source in another project.
    If you still have any problem, please feel free to ask.

  • Dynamic shared datasource

    Hi,
       How to create a dynamic shared data source in SSRS?

    Hi,
      Dynamic in the sense i can connect to all SQL servers in my environment using a single data source by giving expression. How i can convert this data source into shared data source? I'm getting error that Expression defined data source can't be converted
    into shared data source.
    Yes its a SSRS limitation
    expression based connection string is only alllowed for embedded data sources
    But you can apply this workaround if you want which would require a linked server setup

  • Shared datasource during migration

    hi, just wanted to check something, even when I think it will not be a problem...
    just started a migration from sccm 2007 to 2012 R2.
    we will be running both environments in parallel for a while.
    in the 2007 environment, all content sources had been placed on a separate fileshare (not dfs)
    I consider I can just leave it there and that this will not be a problem for either environments?

  • How do I use a shared data source in my dataset in this new UI?

    I'm new to SSRS 2012 and am having trouble with the UI. All of my experience is with SSRS 2005, and this is quite different.
    So I created a shared data source in my new project. Next I added a report (non-wizard, I'm going for hand-crafted). Looking at the UI I have a report data window on the left side of VS 2010, and in it are a couple of menus and a tree navigation pane. If I
    select the new menu, and then dataset (since I want to add the data to my report first) I get the Dataset property window. After selecting 'Use a dataset embedded in my report' a new panel is displayed where I can set up a new dataset. But from what I see
    here all I can do is create a new data source, but I want to use my shared datasource. I would think it would just be in the data source drop down presented, but that is empty (I had an image that illustrated all this but I keep being told I need to 'verify
    my account', and after doing so I'm still getting that error... oh well, I don't have enough time to keep verifying my account here).
    In 2005 I could choose a shared datasource, and it doesn't seem logical that this functionality would be removed. What am I missing here?
    Any help would be much appreciated.

    First right-click on your reports' Data Sources and add a reference to the Shared Data Source, by selecting "Use Shared Data Source Reference" in the "Add Data Source" dialog.

  • SQL Server 2008 R2 - Report Builder 3.0 - timeout using shared data source and stored procedure

    I select the shared datasource from the data source propeties dialog, test the connection and everything is good.
    I add a dataset by selecting "use a dataset embedded in my report" option within the Dataset properties dialog.
    I select the newly added data source, click the "Stored procedure" query type and drop down the list box and select my intended stored procedure.
    the timeout for the dataset is "0" seconds.
    I click the "OK" button and I'm presented with the parameters to the stored procedure.
    I enter valid data for the parameters and click the "OK" button.
    I then get the following error message after 30 seconds:
    The problem is, all of the timeouts, that I'm aware of, have values of zero (no timeout) or high enough values that 30 seconds isn't even close to the timeout.
    I think the smallest timeout we have is 120 seconds.
    I have searched this site and many others and the solutions all involve altering the stored procedure to get the fields into report builder and then revert the stored procedure back to its original form.
    To me, this is NOT a solution.
    I have too many stored procedures that need to be brought into Report Builder.
    I need a real solution.
    Thank you for you time, Tim Caldwell.
    Timothy E Caldwell

    I don't mean to be rude, but really, check to see if the stored procedure can return data rows???
    Maybe I'm not being clear enough.
    The stored procedure runs perfectly fine.
    it runs perfectly fine in the production environment and the test environment.
    I can access the stored procedure in several ways and have it return correct data.
    I can even trick report builder into creating a dataset with parameters and run the stored procedure that way.
    What I cannot do, is to get report builder to not timeout after 30 seconds on the initial creation of a dataset with a Query type of stored procedure.
    I have seen this issues posted again and again and again on may different sites and the "solution" is to simplifiy the stored procedure by creating a stored procedure that has a create table and a select in the stored procedure and that's it.  After
    report builder creates the dataset the developer then has to replace the simplified stored procedure with the actual stored procedure and everything works fine after that.
    HOWEVER, having to go through this process for 70 or more stored procedures is ridiculous.
    It would appear that there is something within report builder itself that is causing this issue.
    The SQL Script included is an example of a stored procedure that will not create fields create a dataset with fields and parameters in Report Builder 3.0:
    USE [CRUM_IT]
    GO
    /****** Object: StoredProcedure [dbo].[COGNOS_Level5ScriptSP] Script Date: 11/17/2014 08:02:26 ******/

  • How to convert Report Model to Report Designer DataSet

    To all,
    I have a two part question. One is I am experiencing the error at the end of this question when migrating SQL Server 2005 SSRS Native Reports, the report uses a Report Model, to SQL Server 2008 SSRS Native. I bring the Report and Report Model to SQL Server 2008 SSRS and get the error at the end of the question below. Background and the 2nd question are below.
    I have a bunch of Report Builder based Reports. I need to convert them to VS BIDS based Report Designer Reports with Shared Datasources and MDX based DataSets.
    How can I grab the MDX from the Report Builder Report Model so I can put it into the Report Designer DataSet Query Definition?
    What is the easiest way to make this migration between these Report development environments.
    I am able to open the Report.RDL file in VS BIDS and can see the entire UI layer. The DataSet I see here is the one that is related to the error at the end of the question. The RD/DataSet holds:

    I have created a Shared Datasource that points the the correct Analysis Services cubes that the original Report Model pointed at.
    However, I get this error when running the report:
    An error occurred during client rendering.
    An error has occurred during report processing.
    Semantic query compilation failed: e EmptySemanticQuery The SemanticQuery does not contain any Groupings or MeasureGroups. SemanticQuery must contain at least one of these elements. (SemanticQuery '').

    Actually the error above is from running the report on SSRS 2008 Native. Does anyone know why I get this error and how it may be resolved.
    Then I try to bring the report into BIDS RD and create a SDS and DataSet. The Semantic Query above is from the RD DataSet Query window.
    I get the following error when running the report in BIDS RD:
    An error occured during local processing.
    An error has occured during report processing.
    Query execution failed for dataset 'dataSet'.
    The SemanticQuery element at line 7, column 351 (namespace http://schema.microsoft.com/sqlserver/2004/10semanticmodeling) cannot appear under Envelope/Body/Execute/Command.
    So I have two errors with two scenarios. I'd like to know how to resolve one of them.
    I'd also like to know how to get the MDX from the RB/RM report so I can put it into the VS BIDS Version and get that to work properly.
    Thanks,
    Eric

  • Error when applet is trying to connect to WLS server

    Hello everyone,
    I'm currently having problems with applets and WebLogic. Though I know, applets are not the most appreciated way to do things with weblogic (or even in general), there are no real alternatives for us.
    We have a larger application consisting of several servlets, already integrated into WLS and using the data sources.
    Now we want to create a small piece of applet that uses WLS to get data from the same JDBC data sources to display and navigate inside charts. These might even be updated on a regular basis while the applet is running.
    So, there are two questions:
    First, is it possible for the applet to be available on the server and connect to WLS by creating an initial context? I'm currently trying and i get an "java.security.AccessControlException: access denied (java.lang.RuntimePermission setContextClassLoader)". See the attached code below to see the connection example.
    Second, if i can connect to the WLS, will this also be possible when the WLS is not localhost anymore, but another server? To clarify, an example:
    Can an applet that is running inside a WLS at "http://theotherserver.net:7001/myapp/MyApplet.class" connect to the WLS at "theotherserver.net"?
    I'd be glad if anyone could help me with that. The code I'm currently using (inside the init() function of the applet), is the following:
    public void init() {
         Context ctx = null;
         Hashtable<String, String> ht = new Hashtable<String, String>();
         ht.put(Context.INITIAL_CONTEXT_FACTORY, "weblogic.jndi.WLInitialContextFactory");
         ht.put(Context.PROVIDER_URL, "t3://localhost:7001");
         try {
              ctx = new InitialContext(ht);
         // Use the context in your program
              System.out.println("context success");
         } catch (NamingException e) {
         System.out.println("NamingException"); // a failure occurred
         e.printStackTrace();
         } catch (AccessControlException e) {
              System.out.println("security control exception when authing"); // a failure occurred
              e.printStackTrace();
         } catch (Exception e) {
              System.out.println("other exception"); // a failure occurred
              e.printStackTrace();
         } finally {
              System.out.println("finally");
              try {
                   ctx.close();
                   System.out.println("close");
              } catch (Exception e) {
                   System.out.println("close exception"); // a failure occurred
    When the applet is run, whatever I do in start() etc get's done (for example drawing charts with jfreechart), but the java console prints the following as a result of the failed connection to WLS:
    security control exception when authing

    I have solved the above problem now. The problem was, that I only signed my own jar, but not the wlclient.jar, which also needs the rights to instantiate classes.
    This also solved my second question. Yet, there is another thing, now that I am trying to use JNDI to access a JDBC shared datasource from weblogic.
    The data source is accessible and working (tested from servlets). Now I'm trying to create a connection with the following code, but it does not get past the first lookup:
    try {
    DataSource ds = (DataSource) this.appletContext.lookup("ReportCentral");
    conn = ds.getConnection();
    conn.setAutoCommit(true);
    The thrown exception:
    java.lang.NoClassDefFoundError: weblogic/jdbc/common/internal/RemoteDataSource

    I cannot find the mentioned class, to include it in my jar, neither am I sure that this is the best way to get a connection to the database this way.
    In the applet, it is NOT possible to create the connection by hand, as the user/password are only available to weblogic, but not the overlying J2EE applications.
    If i do that on my local system, nevertheless, it works:
    OracleDataSource ds = new OracleDataSource();
    ds.setURL("jdbc:oracle:thin:...@localhost:1521:XE");
    conn = ds.getConnection();
    This creates a valid connection.
    So, the major question is: How can I access the connection pool of Weblogic through an applet?

  • How to install SSRS project on another server where there is no SSDT?

    Hi!
    I have a developer environment with SSDT and My SSRS project.
    How do I install the whole project with Shared Dataset, shared DataSource, Reports to another server, where doesn't SSDT?
    P.s. I can't connect to client server with my visual studio from my developer environment.

    Hello,
    What exactly do you mean with "install project"? Do you mean to deploy created reports? You can e.g. manually upload the report files (.RDL) via Report Manager UI. Or do you mean to edit the project on an other machine? Then you have to install SSDT or at
    least Report Builder 3.0.

  • An error has occurred during report processing. (rsProcessingAborted). Query execution failed for dataset 'DimUserWorkCentre'. (rsErrorExecutingCommand). The Cube either does not exists or has not been processed

    Hi,
    I'm having issues with the report created using SSAS cube.
    An error has occurred during report processing. (rsProcessingAborted)
    Query execution failed for dataset 'DimUserWorkCentre'. (rsErrorExecutingCommand)
    The Operator_Performance cube either does not exist or has not been processed.
    I have searched through internet and tried all the solutions, but didn't worked for me.
    SSRS services running as NETEWORK SERVICE user.
    SSRS Execution running as a Different user, which is the login is used to logon ot that server. I have also verified this user has access to database. I'm using Shared DataSource(SSAS Source) for this report.
    Can any one please help me.
    Thank You,
    Praveen.

    Hello,
    Have you tried it to execute on report manager , Is your data source properly configured in Report Manager  and your report is mapped with Datset correctly?
    Have you executed the Dataset query MDX editor  now?
    What is the volume of data you are fetching in the report. Try it to execute in other than IE , I don't know the exact reason but some of our report with large volume of data  are failing on IE , on the other hand these reports are running fine Google

  • Reports not Generated after moving SCCM 2012 SP1 DB on SQL 2012 SP1 cluster

    Hi all,
    i have moved my SCCM 2012 SP1 DB on SQL 2012 SP1 Failover Cluster,this cluster is a two node cluster.the DB was moved fine and the DB configuration in SCCM Site maintenance was also done successfully.After the migration process,SCCM was working fine created
    few collections & packages, then checked the DB on cluster & they were updated successfully.
    but when i tried to install report server on my SCCM machine,again there was no instance displayed after entering the cluster name.
    I searched this & come across this post :-
    http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/configmanagergeneral/thread/4479e73e-8a19-4c7e-9418-b36770656b9b/
    which says to install report server on the cluster node machine which is currently running the Reporting Service.I tried to install the report server & the instance was detected this time.it was installed successfully.
    But when i tried to generate reports I got this error :-
    Permissions are fine as i have added SCCMadmin & sccm machine in the local admin of both the nodes.
    Please Help.
    Thanks,
    Pranay.

    Yes, I know this is an old post, but I’m trying to clean them up. Did you solve this problem, if so what was the solution?
    If you look at your second screenshot the Remote errors is not enabled. Use this blog to enable them.
    http://www.enhansoft.com/blog/enabling-remote-errors-in-sql
    If changing the data source on the report fixed it for a single report. It means that your shared Datasource is having problems. Reset the username and password within CM12 console and this should fix it for every report.
