Shared folder crashes user(s) Finder

Out of the blue, a handful of users (in 10.5.6 client) are experiencing problems with a shared folder on the server (10.4.11 server). Upon mounting the file server a user will try to navigate to a nested folder called 'People' and then the spinning wheel shows up and the Finder crashes a few seconds later. I've repaired permissions, changed their status as in the file sharing group and still the same problem. Anyone experience this problem? Below is the transcript from CrashReporter...

Another remote user is having the same problem and, after looking at the CrashReporter log, the initial section of the report is identical to what others have seen. Could this be a spotlight issue on the file server? Finder is crashing as soon as a folder on the shared volume is selected in an open finder window. Ideas?

  • Not finding library from shared folder across user accounts

Hello all knowledgeable people. Hopefully one of you will tell me what I am doing wrong.
I recently moved my iTunes Media Folder to a Time Capsule. In iTunes (10.0.1) on the user account where the collection was and subsequently moved, I can see, listen & watch all iTunes media. However when I added two other user accounts to my iMac (OS X 10.6.4) I can not get either user account to attach themselves to the iTunes library. I have changed the prefs and to tell it the collection is on the Time Capsule, and yes it is connecting with the username and password saved.
Any ideas on remedying this will be very welcome
    Many Thanks

  • Sharing/filesharing: cant add shared folder and users

my filesharing and screensharing iMac / MBP via wifi works in principle, but......
on the MBP i can add shared folders and modify the users. if i try do do that *on my iMac it fails*. the *menubar disappears and the computer hangs* so that a forced shudown and restart is necessary.
yes, i did diskcheck, permission repair, trashed the com.apple.preferences.sharing.plist and did a combo 10.5.4 system update, all without success.
i have back to my mac activated without error message, but i am not shure if it works (how can i test that?)
    thanks for hints!

I have the same problem. Any Solution?

  • Bridge "insufficient disk space" on Mac OSX with shared folder Users

Any update to the problem with having a shared folder named users?
    http://forums.adobe.com/message/4206040

    Anybody have any ideas?
Not many here now about network set ups. Bridge is not designed for use over a network and also officially not supported by Adobe.
Bridge also uses a user specific library for its cache data.
This guy used to hang around here and has a successful set up for a network, try his blog:

  • I'm trying to share folder between users on a single mac.  I put the folder in "shared," set permissions so other user can read and write, enabled file sharing, but can't find the folder on the second user's account.  Any help?

I'm trying to share a folder between users on a single mac.  I want both users to be able to read and write so the folder stays current on both accounts.  I put the folder in "shared," set permissions on folder so other user can read and write, enabled file sharing, but can't find the folder on the second user's account.  Any help?

Did you log out of one account and into the other or just used Fast user switching?
Is the permissions set to anyone?
When you move data to teh Shared folder is it copied or just moved?
If copied then it's not a folder both can access, just a way station like a USB thumb drive that things are coped too and off of likely.
You can run this #5 on each user account to reset the user permissions once they are taken back out of the Shared folder

  • Library problems with two XP user accounts accessing music in shared folder

I'm sorry if this has already been answered; I have not been able to find the answer. My wife and I each have a different user account on the same Windows XP machine. I recently combined our iTunes libraries into the shared folder on the computer. I correctly pointed iTunes (in each of our accounts) to the correct location for the music files. I did an "Add Folder to Library" to make sure each account had all of the music. When I did this, I got duplicate listings of all of the songs that also had exclamation points. When I did a "Get Info" on these songs, I found that each song was correctly pointed to the correct file location. I laboriously deleted each "exclamation point" song one at a time (in each account). Now the problem I have is that whenever my wife or I close iTunes and the other person opens iTunes in their XP user account, none of the songs can be found. The best way I've been able to resolve this is to (unfortunately) delete the entire library, and do an "Add Folder To Library" to find all of the song locations and include all of the songs back into the library. Surely this can't be how this is supposed to work.
    So, my questions are:
    - Do I need to add new albums / songs one at a time to avoid duplicates (rather than use the "Add Folder" for the entire iTunes music folder again)?
    - How do I setup iTunes so that my wife and I can each go into iTunes in our seperate XP accounts and have all of our songs right where we left them (WITHOUT having to delete the entire libary and "add" again.)
FYI: I'm using the latest version of iTunes and (again) I'm using Windows XP.
My wife and I really want to each get a new iPod Nano, but if I can't trust iTunes... forget it.
    THANKS!!!

I have this setup at working. Two accounts with all files stored on a shared folder, mine is a network drive. Each account has its own library and can access all files. We also use one iTunes account for rare purchases.
This is how did initial setup:
Make a folder in the shared folder. I called mine itunes.
This is where iTunes stores its files.
With second account point iTunes at shared folder.
Import the folder you created earlier.
This worked for me without duplications. The only complication is that when importing from CD with one account the other doesn't know it. The other account must do import on the folder for the CD just imported. We keep track of this with a spreadsheet updated to show which account has which CD files.

  • Sharing music folder between user accounts?

I would like to have my music library available for my wife on a different user account on my iMac under Lion.
The music library is on an external drive on my LAN
When I try to select it as the source of music in my wife's account, there are no errors, but nothing happens, the music is not added to her iTunes, it just stays in the welcome screen, where to find music, etc.
I read a tutorial on moving the library to a shared folder, but I am hoping I do not have to do that. The drive is available to her library, just that nothing happens after I select it.
I imagine I am not seeing something obvious?
    THansk,
    Henry

check for file permissions witin your shared iTunes folder and make sure your wife's account have both read AND write privileges and that the privileges are applied not only to the folder but all the files and sub directories within that folder.

  • How can I get Spotlight to search my Users/Shared folder?

How can I get Spotlight to search my Users/Shared folder?  It searches the folders in the other users, but not Shared.  When I CMD-I the Shared folder, my group has read-write privileges (all groups have at least read-only privileges).  When I do the search in the Finder window (with the Shared folder highlighted), It gives me the options of This Mac and "Shared".  When I click on "Shared," it does not give me any results.  I keep documents, photos, iTunes data, etc, in this Shared folder, and would like to be able to use Spotlight on it.

I appreciate the 108 "views," but there weren't any replies, so I took another shot at figuring it out.  I did a CMD-I on the Shared folder, and made the "everyone" group have read-write access, and it worked!  I'm not sure if its because now all groups have read-write access, or just because the "everyone" group does, but I don't care at this point.    I'll have to restrict a few folders within in there, but at least it searches the main Shared folder itself now.

  • Finder "Shared Folder" Flag

What does the "Shared Folder" black bar across the top of a Finder window actually indicate? I am seeing it on a home folder that I'm sharing for this particular user via afp with Automount -> User home folders selected, however I fear that perhaps I'm somehow opening this up to access from other users?
I have disabled guest access, but I still see this flag in Finder. I have also stripped perms down to just the owner having rw and the staff ro and o none.
Any further detail on this would be appreciated!

+What does the "Shared Folder" black bar across the top of a Finder window actually indicate?+
That badge and the check in the Info window simply indicate that the folder is a share point for one or more file services. It says nothing about whether or not guest access is enabled for one or more of the services, or even for the share point itself.

  • Sharing the /Users/Shared folder

My wife is using a Macbook Air (10.5.4) and would like to access photos stored on our iMac G4 (10.4.11).
She can connect to the G4 using cmd-K but the only volumes in /User that show up are those of the four family members, the /User/Shared volume is not visible and this is where the photos are; from the G4 of course all users have access. I checked the permissions on the folder and it looks correct...rwx for all.
Also, in her own volume on the G4 she cannot open the system standard folders (Movies, Desktop, Library, etc.) from the Air but she can open any folders and docs she created.
I tried Mac Help but didn't find anything useful.

As BDAqua reported, you'll need SharePoints to add the iMac G4 Tiger Shared folder as a mount point.
When attempting to access her own volume on the iMac G4 Tiger from the MacBook Air running Leopard, is she attempting to connect as a guest user or as a registered user? If just clicking on the iMac icon in a Finder window's sidebar, it might be trying to allow login as a guest, not a registered user. Try connecting from Finder's menubar > Go > Connect to server (then enter afp://{networkname_of_imacG4}) or Go > Network (and doubleclick on iMac icon) and when prompted to save password to keychain, do so ‑‑ if no login password (to her account on the iMac) has been previously saved in her Keychain (on the MBA), it would restrict her to logging in as a guest.

  • HT3275 How do I find/restore files from items in secure home folder? How do I find/restore files that crashed when in finder of secure (File Vault) home folder?

How do I find/restore files from items in secure (File Vault) home folder? How do I find/restore files that crashed when in finder of secure (File Vault) home folder?  When I go into Time Machine, I see earlier dates but can't see files in my User File. I have File Vault turned on and see my home folder as a sparsebundle.  Do I neede to restore this in order to see files in my home folder.  When I click on it to restore it gives me an estimated time of over 2 hours.  Also tried to restore an Excel file I was working on when computer hung, so lost it without saving or naming it.  Does it exist anyplace and can I restore it?

Thanks. I had pretty much figured out from other posts that I had better turn off File Vault for my home folder and use a disk utility sparse bundel for little information I wanted to secure. The information about File Vault 2 in Lion was new and useful though.

  • How can I move my iTunes media folder from users/shared back to one user account?

I shared my music with multiple users on one macbook pro.
Like on the Apple support discussions described I changed the iTunes media folder to users/shared. My question is how to reverse that action? Once I reset the media folder location it tells me /users/name/music/itunes/itunes media, that would be right but the files remain in users/shared?

Tell us what the underlying objective is in all this.  You came here asking how to move a media folder but now we're getting into user libraries and moving things back and forth to their original locations. Why move it in the first place if you are just putting it back?  Maybe you don't need to move things.
Read these to learn more about how iTunes works.  If you move the wrong things you can end up breaking links.  This goes double for moving things to other drives.

It is almost certain that nothing you are doing will require removing the iTunes application itself.  Asking that tells me you are doing something relatively complicated with insufficient background  -- kind of like somebody asking me how to use a power saw.  I can tell them, but when it sounds like their project is painting a room one begins to wonder if they are going about things correctly.   That said, organizing/consolidating copies files.  Open iTunes, get info on a track, look at summary and see where the file is now located iTunes uses to play the track.  It should be in the moved location and it is okay to delete the others.

  • Windows 2008 : How to Restrict Users to Copy file from Shared Folder

    Hello All,
I need to Restrict Users to Copy file from Shared Folder. Please let me know is there any method to achieve this requirement.

If user have Read permission, they can copy it. So actually you cannot restrict user from copy your files if they could read/edit.
Some programs could help restrict users from edit/modify/copy the content of their files such as Office files, PDF files etc as Oscar said above.

  • How do I set up a shared folder so all user accounts can view photos?

How do I set up a shared drive for iPhotos for multiple users of my iMac?

For iPhoto 09 (version 8.0.2) and later:
    What you mean by 'share'.
If you want the other user to be able to see the pics, but not add to, change or alter your library, then enable Sharing in your iPhoto (Preferences -> Sharing), leave iPhoto running and use Fast User Switching to open the other account. In that account, enable 'Look For Shared Libraries'. Your Library will appear in the other source pane.
Any user can drag a pic from the Shared Library to their own in the iPhoto Window.
Remember iPhoto must be running in both accounts for this to work.
If you want the other user to have the same access to the library as you: to be able to add, edit, organise, keyword etc.
Quit iPhoto in both accounts. Move the Library to the Users / Shared Folder
(You can also use an external HD set to ignore permissions, a Disk Image or even partition your Hard Disk.)
In each account in turn: Double click on the Library to open it. (You may be asked to repair the Library Permissions.) From that point on, this will be the default library location. Both accounts will have full access to the library, in fact, both accounts will 'own' it.
However, there is a catch with this system and it is a significant one. iPhoto is not a multi-user app., it does not have the code to negotiate two users simultaneously writing to the database, and trying will cause db corruption. So only one user at a time, and back up, back up back up.

  • Hello there - how can I share my iTunes library between two users on the same computer? I put the library in a shared folder between both and have selected this library on both as well, but when I update iTunes with music etc it only appears on one?

Hello there - how can I share my iTunes library between two users on the same computer? I put the library in a shared folder between both and have selected this library on both as well, but when I update iTunes with music etc it only appears on one?

Thank you Joe - I tried this but it's only showing a teensy amount of music - the stuff on the second users account as opposed to the giagntic library on the 'main' account. I actually went to a Genius Bar and they said that apple doesn't really want you to share music between accounts - parents don't want to hear their kids music etc. Which seemed strange, but it might be the case sadly   Thanks anyway!
