Sharing a library at home

What about the following scenario. A family builds up a common music library consisting of mp3 and other files on an external LAN disk accessible in read-only mode from family’s Macs and PCs. The library is maintained by a user with write access to the disk and using iTunes or other application. The size of this library is 1 TB or more. Now, all family members have installed iTunes on their Macs and PCs and want to refer to some of the files in the common library from their respective iTunes. Each user refers to a different but partially overlapping set of files. The files should not be copied because of maintenance problems, only fetched via LAN when needed. Each user wants also to establish a playlist to be synchronized with his iPod. Furthermore, the files are stored in the common library using high quality encodings but should automatically be converted to smaller sizes when syncing with iPods. Will this work at all? Will metainformation stored in the files in the common library including artwork, artist, title etc. be accessible to read-only users? The purpose of all this is to store all the CDs that the family owns by a common library on disk and bring some order into the chaos.

Gotta ask though, why are you so interested in the internal workings of iTunes?
Well, the short and philosophical answer is: why not?
A little longer answer is right there in my previous message:
Why these things aren’t explicitly documented in iTunes documentation under, say, “Information for advanced users”? Why do we have to guess and experiment for such trivial things? What’s so secret about it?
More elaborate answer follows.
First, I’m not particularly interested in the internal workings of iTunes. I’ve been working with hardware and software development for 30+ years now so I understand how iTunes software works and even its internal design if not for other reasons then because I know how I would design such software.
Second, my questions for information have nothing to do with any illegal use of anything, if this is what you aiming at. Everything I do is legal according to the laws of my country.
Third, I do believe that open world is better in every aspect and for every person and organization than closed one. Open in this context is not the same as free or non-copyrighted. I work with commercial software development so I understand these matters and I don’t have any problems with that because software is intellectual property too. I also use software from and I work in free software movement so I understand those aspects too. Development and business models of these 2 approaches can coexist and both are needed.
Fourth, if it weren’t for this kind of openness then Apple wouldn’t have an OS to build on today. With OSX they are using the results of open work of many, many people, organizations and years. When they switched then I thought that they finally got real OS and become more open. However what I see is that while they cannot close UNIX (because it’s not their software) they are closing more and more the software that they implement on top of it. By doing this they are not getting new customers but loosing them. BTW, their closeness is one of the main reasons of this David and Goliath situation that they are in from the very beginning.
Fifth, I do not regard file structure, contents and formats as “internal workings” of anything or anybody. A file is an external entity that software uses and every file should be fully documented. The software is not running on vendor’s computer but on mine. The machine was produced by the vendor but it is my machine and I have all the rights to know what is going on that machine and what the software does.
Sixth, this black box strategy is not helping me and others in my situation both at home and work. It is making my job and life more difficult and messy than it needs to be.
Seventh, if they think that they will sell more iPods, more Macs, or more music by not documenting iPod’s and iTunes’ interface (i.e. file structure) then they are in error. This strategy will render them less profit than otherwise. For example, one member of my family is using Macs in work and home and an iPod. We were thinking about purchasing iPods for the other members including myself. Because of the closeness and lack of documentation rendering heavily limited (to iTunes) functionality that will not happen. We were also thinking about iTunes as our primary media library manager mainly because it runs on 2 platforms and integrates well with iPod. Because of its closeness and purposely limited functionality we will select other software for the purpose. Unfortunately that software doesn’t run under OSX so our needs for Apple computers will be weaker now. The same is true for file format that we will use in our master library. Apple Lossless was an alternative but due to its closeness it probably will be FLAC which is open. It is also free but that is only a minor point.

  • Shared Airdisk library vs Home Sharing

Having just purchaesed a new imac, I am trying to figure out the best course of action for streaming my collection. I've been reasonably happy with a MBP and an ibook sharing an Airdisk hosted library streaming to a couple of airport expresses, but am wondering if Ill see any performance gain by putting the library on the new imac and just accessing everything via home sharing. I have a rather large library, over 300GB with lots of lossless files. From a pure stability when streaming standpoint, will I see any improvement in moving the library off of the airdisk?
    Thanks

no - unless you hardwire all your equipment to your network.

  • How do you connect ipad 2 to itunes library using home sharing

How do you connect the ipad 2 to the itunes library using home sharing so you can listen on your ipad 2? I've seen directions for the ipad which tell you how to setup home sharing then open ipod and touch library in the left column, but when I hit library, nothing happens. I'm assuming the ipad 2 has something different about it. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks.
PS, the OS is 4.3.3 (just got it but it's not on the os list)

  • ATV3 New Update Breaks Home Sharing Music Library Streaming (Again)

Windows 7 user here using Apple TV 3.  Overall, I love the device, when it works right.
When I first got it, using the Home Sharing Music Library feature from the Apple TV (in other words, pulling content from the computer) was broken in that it would play for a while, then suddenly stop.  There was a *huge* thread on this where many people seemed to experience it.
I was so happy when the last AppleTV update fixed this (for me anyways, and I'd guess many others) - since then (months) it worked flawlessly until today, when the ATV prompted me for an update.  Now it's even worse than before and appears to play the first song, then immediately get stuck on the second.  =(  Anyone else having this issue?
Fortunately, my workaround works, which is "pushing" content from my computer, but this isn't nearly as convenient for a variety of reasons (including much less control via the AppleTV if I'm just relaxing and listening).
I truly hope Apple can resolve this quickly, since they had it nailed before...

Luke, I can confirm the bugs with the latest AppleTV software, version 5.  It doesn't matter if it is an ATV2 or ATV3 because they are running the same OS version.  There are Home Sharing problems because immediately after I updated my ATV2, I started having Home Sharing problems when trying to play any video from my iMac.  The link between the Mac and the ATV2 breaks and it bumps back to the main menu with no computers displayed.  Quitting iTunes and re-launching fixes the problem, but it isn't guaranteed.  Sometimes you will get lucky and it will remain connected, other times, it will break the link again, after another 5 minutes.  And, it won't remember your place in the video when the link breaks.
The other major bug is that TV shows are displayed out of order.  Apple has confirmed the TV show order bug, but haven't heard anything on the Home Sharing bug.  I have reported that one to Apple.  Hopefully we will get a software update soon.

  • Iphone and ipod losing sync with shared itunes library - home sharing not working

I hope this can help some people who have had problems with syncing their IOS devices to their shared itunes library.
Having had a lot of trouble with syncing and sharing my itunes libraries from two PC's to an iphone 4 and 4S via "itunes home sharing", I decided to try and find a solution using typical search engine search phrases. I found a number of issues similar to mine that pointed toward local network protocols such as media serving, and the ability or lack of ability to use these protocols by DSL routers.
My solution was simple, change the DSL router. My ISP supplied DSL router was the problem, not being able to identify that the PC's hosting my itunes libraries become media servers when itunes home sharing is switched on. My DSL box is a Tesco Broadband branded/firmware Thomson TG580. As a test I tried out a box from my previous supplier, an O2 branded/firmware Thomson/Technicolor TG582n. Although this wont work with my ISP connection, it will work as a wirless/wired router. As soon as I connected this all together, it worked first time without any hassle. I was mirroring my shared HD videos via the itunes home shared library to my 4S perfectly.
I know this may not help most people, but if you have the chance to test another wireless router, give it a go. Having had a good look, I can't find an Apple compatibility list. Maybe this is something they could do, or maybe someone can point out a site that may have this info?
I am by no means an Apple Fanboy, but I have to say that a lot of the complaints about the home sharing between itunes, ipods, iphones, Apple TV etc. may simply be the router and not itunes or the IOS devices.
My setup is PC's running the latest itunes with Win 7 32 & 64 bit and my IOS devices on 6, I also tested an iphone 4 on IOS 5 that worked perfectly. My 4S is now a perfect HDMI media player/streamer for my itunes music and videos encoded to H.264 using Handbrake.

Assuimg you have the latest ATV firmware, at the bottom of the general settings menu on your apple TV there is an option to reset your apple TV. Try that and then reset it up back on your network.
Before testing ensure the correct time/date/nearest City is setup in the ATV settings and re-enter your apple ID/password and turn on home sharing. You can connect to your network either via wifi or cable and see if it then works.
Resetting the ATV and then checking and re-entering all my settings worked for me.
I guess if not, then the next step is to disable any firewall on your PC and see if that works after the PC is rebooted.
    Hope this helps.

  • How to move music to library with home sharing

How do I move my music from my library under Home Sharing to my regular library?  I don't see an import button or a way I can click and drag....thanks!

    try this:
use e.g. Subler to add an explicit tag to files, then adjust the parental control preference pane accordingly

  • How to add my library to home sharing

How do I add more music or my entire library to home sharing?

Enable home sharing in iTunes preferences and make sure the systems you want to home share with have all been linked to your Apple ID you use for the iTunes store. Without authenticating the systems, they don't see each other.
Even though I shared a library in the past between macs, I had to turn on the itunes store, sign in with my Apple ID, then removed the store again from my host system that I dedicate to having all the music ... in order for its music to show up on iOS devices via Home Sharing.
Once they're linked they should see the shared library on the host iTunes system. Any additional music etc you add will be shared as well, depending on your home sharing preferences.

  • Sharing Aperture Library with Other Computers on the Home Network

    Hello,
Forgive me if this question has been asked before, if it has, I missed it.
I have a mac on which I have Aperture and have taken the time to edit all of our family photos (cropping, color management, red eye reduction, etc.), so, after having done all of this, my wife, when showing her friends photos and such, would like to be able to have access to those photos on her mac laptop. But, I called Apple on this and their tech support guy made it sound like the only way to do this would be to create a web gallery for each set of pictures. And, I have to say, that solution seemed a bit extreme for sharing pictures within a home, not to mention the logistics for creating web galleries for tens of thousands of photos. So, the other option that occurred to me was that I could export all of the pictures into a directory and then have her iphoto import all of those pictures, however, there are two problems with that: 1) she is not up to date with new photos that have been added to Aperture and 2) the subfolder structure isn't preserved (i.e., it's just a huge mass of photos not a groups organized according to event).
So, my question is: does anyone know a better more practical way to do this? I would think it would be something that Apple would foresee and have a fix for but maybe not.
    Thank you very much,
    Ken

+"Single User License. This License allows you to install and use one copy of the Apple Software on one Apple-labeled desktop computer and one Apple-labeled laptop computer so long as both computers are owned and used by you."+
I own an iMac and I pretend to buy an Apple laptop as secondary computer for my home, just after vacations, as now I have some more important expenses that should deliver new set of photos into Aperture library.
iMac is in use by me, and my wife, and kid. I assume that it will be legal to install copy of Aperture on my new laptop. So I will end in same situation as you are today. In my opinion it will be legal to use Aperture on both computers, as both are in possession of my family, and at least in my country we are somehow single entity (we pay common taxes from our joint income etc.) - it depends on the marriage settlement, however we've choose it that way.
In this case I'll simple export library and import it on my secondary computer. I own my iMac, and I'll own my Macbook Pro. At the same moment my wife own them as well. I'm not sure about your situation, but it might work for you. The questions is, is it really legal?

  • Is there any way to hide certain artists/albums in my iTunes library from Home Sharing?

Is there any way I can hide some of my music from other people, like my sister, while they are accessing my iTunes library with Home Sharing?
I have a few personal recordings that I don't want anyone but me to have access to.
Is deleting them from my library the only option?

It's not an ideal solution ... but have you considered creating a second library (called, say, "Private Library") containing just the personal recordings?
To create the private library, hold down the shift key while launching iTunes. Click "Create Library" in the dialog that comes up.
Once you've created and opened the "Private library", don't activate home sharing for it. Now go "Edit > Preferences". In the "Advanced" tab, select "Copy files to iTunes media folder when adding to library", as per the following screenshot:
    ... and click OK.
Now add the personal recordings to the Private Library.
To get back to your original library, quit iTunes. Hold down the Shift key while launching iTunes ... but this time click the "Choose library" button. Browse to the iTunes library file for your original library and doubleclick that. You should now be seeing your original library.
Delete the personal items from your original library.
Now, in order to see those recordings in iTunes, all you have to do is do a "Choose library" when launching iTunes, and open Private library. Because Home sharing isn't activated for Private library, your sister won't be able to access those recordings. (She won't be able to access your original library either, though, when you have Private library running.)

A couple of other things you might like to try :-
    - Determine whether you are able to access the internet from anywhere else on your new PC (e.g. do Windows updates download ?  Can you access the Windows 8 store ? )   If the answer is no, then your problem doesn't lie with IE but with the actual wireless connection.  If the answer is yes, then continue as below.
    - Run IE from the desktop instead of the Start screen - probably won't make any difference, but worth a try.
    - Download a decent browser like Firefox or Chrome and try that - this will show whether the problem lies just with IE or not
    - As a general rule, don't do anything that PC World tell you to do, lol !
As gg30340 says, this does sound very much like it MAY be a problem with firewall settings - if you're running Norton Antivirus then I believe that will be providing the firewall service, rather than the inbuilt Windows firewall.
One thing you don't need to worry about - Windows 8 is a perfectly good OS and works just as well as Windows 7 did.  I'm using it now !

Recently updated the the apple tv remote app for my iPhone4. Now can no longer turn on the apple tv "box" on/off using iPhone app as I used to do before the update.  Only thing that shows on iPhone screen is music library.  Home Sharing is on. Any help appreciated.  Sorry if this is not exactly the right place to post this!

One clue: I have found a reliable way to solve the problem when it happens.
In my network, I have the main Airport Extreme (Gen 1) which is connected to my router, which distributes IP addresses to my internal subnet.  The other two AEs (one Gen 4, one Gen 5) are set to extend the network.
When I get this problem with an AppleTV 2 that can "see" my library, but when I try to open it, it says it couldn't find the library, it seems to have to do with a change in which Airport Extreme it's talking to.
If I restart the main Airport Extreme from the Airport Utility, effectively restarting the entire wireless network, then when the network resumes, every AppleTV 2 is happy again.
Unfortuntely, the problem does seem to recur - but I'm wondering if it's because temporary interference leads an AppleTV 2 to try to connect to a different AE, and somehow that's mucking with the Home Sharing.  Remember, internet access (Trailers, Store, Netflix) have no issues.  Purely Home Sharing.

  • Could not connect to " home shared iTunes library name "

I'm having an issue with iTunes/ Apple TV. Actually it has been ongoing. I have a particular iTunes library shared on a private subnet (together with the Apple TVs) from a Mac Mini. I can connect and play content any time with iTunes on another computer 100% reliably. But around 60% of the time when I try to connect to it from any of my four Apple TV (2's) an error comes up saying "Could not connect to "<home shared iTunes library name>" ", "Make sure the computer is on the same network as your Apple TV. the iTunes version is up to date and iTunes is running". The answer to those questions (as always with such messages is obviously 'yes':
Yes of course we are on the same network. If I wasn't, the library wouldn't have even shown up in the first place before selecting it
Yes iTunes as always is the latest version thanks to Mac Software Update
    Again 'dah'. See response #1
If I restart the offending iTunes library the error is resolved (although sometimes it does require reboot of the Apple TV) but could reappear as early as within the next 24 hours. This issue has been occuring for a very long time however appears to be increasing in frequency. It occured as well on the Apple TV (v1).
Anyone with clues on what's going on here?
    Thanks
    Greg

I agree that the first debug point should be the network. Though like Greg, I use a Mac Mini to serve up movies to a couple of Apple TVs. From the 'problem' Apple TV, I could see other iTunes movie libraries on other Mac(s), and those would work/play fine. It's only when I try to connect to the iTunes Library of the Mac Mini that I have this issue. It's almost like it's asleep, and doesn't respond. Though I can mount the library folder, and play movies from other Macs w/o a problem while the Apple TV still has the problem.
As Greg mentions, closing and re-opening iTunes on the Mini solves the issue (though only temporarily).
The only difference that I have (non-consistency) is that my Mac Mini is an older model, and cannot be upgraded to run Lion (10.7.x) like my other Macs. The Mini is running 10.6.8, and iTunes 10.6.1 (32-bit). My Macs are running 10.7.3 and the 64-bit version of iTunes 10.6.1.
Is it possible it could be a 10.6 vs. a 10.7 issue? Greg, which version of OS X are your Macs running?
