Sharing calendars in a small workgroup, basic set up questions

I am getting no where with the new leopard server and ical server.
we have an all mac office, new leopard server and are trying to make the ical server work so that users on the network can see and share each others calendars. the level of documentation i have found so far is disturbingly weak ... this can't be this difficult. Has anyone found a basic ... step by step how to use ical server to enable sharing.
I have managed to publish a calander and view it from another machine ... what i haven't been able to figure out is how someone else might add to that calendar.

there are a few ways to do this.
A. manage it on the server
1. Assuming a bunch of users who are all members of a "staff" or other main group, setup the personal cal accounts in iCal client.
2. On the server, setup a separate group calendar account in iCal in order to delegate individual access to it.
3. Add users as delegates, one by one. Repeat until your clicky finger aches.
4. Stop/start calendar services.
5. Check the box to show the calendar on the client side. Clients should have access to the group calendar now.
B. use a resource calendar to avoid having to delegate manually
1. On the server or any machine bound to OD, create a new resource via Directory.app.
2. Plug in all the details on the info tab.
3. Under the scheduling tab, check the "reservable" and "auto-accept invitations" boxes. Make sure the calendar server is listed there, too.
4. Add "staff" -- or whatever OD group -- as the delegate.
5. Stop/start calendar services.
6. Check the box to show the calendar on the client side.
C. add the group calendar separately for each client.
1. The URL for group calendars follows this format and needs to be added as a separate account (with same username/pass). Just change the URL to: http://serverFQDN:8008/principals/groups/nameofgroup/
2. Make sure to show the account (check the box), and you're done.
obviously, there are varying degrees of inconvenience in each of those techniques. adding one by one either on the server or the client sides is tedious. ical server is still very much "1.0," as far as i'm concerned.
the least tedious is the resource calendar method, though it may not be ideal for your use. it's not a hack, just a workaround to get the desired behavior.

  • Basic set up question on 30" CD and macBook Pro

I have not used a external monitor before with my macbook pro late 2008 15". Have successfully connected the 30"CD to the MBP . I understand that you have two options on the primary display and you can either mirror or extend the workspace.
Using a BT mouse ....how do you move from one display to another? I will be on one workspace and the next window will open on the other display. For example ....I launch safari from the macbook display and the windows open on the 30CD. Then I can t get over there to select a screen to launch.
My primary issues right now are basic set up and navigation....where should I be looking for guidance. I understand that applications themselves may incorporate the preference on displays to be used ..but with out basic navigation between the two screens this is painful.

If you go into Displays Preferences, whenever an external monitor is attached and both the built-in screen and the external monitor are being used, you will see some extra options. There should be an Arrangement tab under which you will find those options. One thing that can be done is to toggle the mode of operation between extended desktop mode (which it sounds like your system is already in) and mirror mode. Mirror mode means the same image will be on both screens. This is useful for those times when you want to run a projector to make a presentation. The opposite of mirror mode is extended desktop mode where the two screens are used as independent workspaces.
Another thing to notice under the Arrangement tab is that you will see small representations of the two screens shown as blue rectangles. Notice that one of them will have a white bar across the top. This is meant to represent the menu bar. You can click on and drag that small white menu bar between the two blue rectangles and the real menu bar will move between the two displays accordingly. In this way you can choose which display, the built-in or the external, will have the menu bar and OS X dock. The other thing you can do in this view is drag the blue rectangles into any position you like so that their arrangement and ordering (which is the left screen and which is the right screen) will match the ordering of the real displays. This is so when you move the cursor (or anything else) from one screen to the other, it follows an expected path. What I mean is, if the external monitor is off to the right of the MBP, you rightfully want it so that when you drag the cursor off the right edge of the MBP's screen, it shows up on the left edge of the external monitor's screen. It sounds like the arrangement of your set up might be opposite of this right now which is why you are having trouble moving the cursor between the screens. By moving those little blue squares around, you can tell OS X what the screen alignment is in order to match exactly the real-world alignment of the true screens.

  • E71 - help needed for basic set up questions

I have just purchased an E71 - a big jump from the last mobile (pre camera era)
But Im lost on this. I ordered the phone online, so Im not sure where to go to get help and instruction about the phone and how to set it up properly and use it. Mannuals aren't my best option. Im in Australia,.
Is there a Nokia store where I can go to help with setting it up?
Does my phone come with a internet security or do I have to purchase it?
    Thanks
    Elven
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

Awesome vansharma and kingpin007 - thankyou for your help.
The PUK was with the mobile operator, so I rang them and after a security check procedure I was able to enter the PUK code and get the phone unlocked. Phew!
I checked the Security Warning Web Setting (as you said kingpin007), and the web alert was marked to ON already - so no problems there.
I also registered at Mosh, (the planets must be badly aspected - that took me 12 attempts LOL) and they have one security download NetQin Moble Anti-virus.
     http://mosh.nokia.com/content/61D5A2C3BF97604AE040050A44301BA2
I guess I am questioning weather or not the phone comes installed with any antivirus or security safeguards factory installed ... is my phone secure on the web/emailing/downloading etc. if I dont install the NetQin or something similar?
In the mannual it says this:
"Important: Your device can only support one antivirus application. Having more than one application with antivirus functioning could affect performance and operation and cause the devise to stop functioning"
And presently I trialled the free 7 day 'F7' security application that was a standard downloaded to the phone - but it is too costly for me to subscribe to - it has another day before it runs out, so I am thinking I should wait until it expires before considering dowloading any other security application. Does that sound like the right thing to do?
Well at least Im back to square One with this all ...
Im sure I'll have more questions as I try to work this all out.
Thanks for your help so far ..
    Cheers

  • Basic set-up question

This is a 101 question... please help me as I'm desperate to get my wireless set up. I just moved into a large apartment building and can plug directly into the wall for internet. I'm assuming it's ethernet. Do I have to hook my Base Station up to a modem or can I plug it directly into the socket in the wall like I do my laptop? I'm so confused. I had to go through an external modem at my old house, but that set up is not working here.
    Thanks

My problem is solved thanks to this forum (I double posted in Airport Express). Thanks again Tessarex.

  • ICal syncing shared calendars

I have 3 separate google calendars that I use often. I have them all shared with each other with r/w permissions to make things easier on the go.
The problem comes in with iCal syncing. I have all three calendars in iCal under separate accounts. sometimes, iCal will sync the shared calendars along with the individuals, making duplicates of them, and flooding me with unnecessary reminders.
The only problem is that iCal WILL NOT save the settings on the shared calendars. When it recognizes that accound has shared calendars, it will load them and give me reminders. Naturally I go and uncheck the calendar because I don't want it syncing. But then, when it refreshes, and finds the shared calendars, it doesn't remember the setting, and loads the shared calendars.
In simple talk, I just need to know how to get iCal to remember NOT to sync the shared calendars. Because it hasn't worked so far and its unbelievably frustrating...

  • Shared Calendar entries won't share

I have a shared calendar with my husband through iCloud, set as my default calendar. But if I make an entry from my iPhone 5 the event will not share with the other devices. If my husband makes an entry from his iPhone 4s, or if I make an entry from my iPad Mini or from my iCloud account on my PC, the events get shared with all devices, incuding my iPhone. Ony events made from my phone won't share. This used to work, I'm not sure when the problem started. My thought is the problem lies with the iPhone 5 or ios6. Is anyone else having this issue? Very frustrating!

I'm not sure if it is helpful or not, but I recently had a similar situation happening on my computer.  I was receiving events that I made on my iphone, ipad, and work computer onto my home computer, but when I was creating events on my computer, they weren't showing up on any of the other devices.
I'm embarassed to say that in my case it was because I didn't actually have my iCloud account set up correctly.  The exact same calendars were created on my mac - so they looked identical, but they weren't actually my iCloud calendars... they were duplicates.
You can open your calendar app, click the top left "Calendars" button.  You'll get your list of calendars.  Be sure that above the list of Calendars in the gray space it says "iCloud."  If it doesn't, you may have had the same issue I had, but on your phone.
Regardless if your problem is the same as mine, since all of your info is on iCloud - the best thing to do is turn off your iCloud calendar on your phone and then turn it back on.  It will take a little time for all the events to repopulate.
1 - Open your Settings App
2 - Click on iCloud and be sure the "Calendars" is on.  (a good test here is to turn it off and be sure your events disapear on the calendar on your phone.  Then come back and turn it back on)
3 - back under Settings again, click on "Mail, Contacts, Calendars"
4 - You should have an "iCloud" account in there  (if you don't - Add account)
5 - Scoll down this screen to the "Calendars" section
6 - Verify that the "Default Calendar" is one of your iCloud calendars.  (You may have iCloud turned on correctly, but you may be putting your new events on the wrong calendar)
    Hopefully that helps.  Good Luck.

  • How to set up a basic file sharing server for my small architectural business?

I have no idea if I have posted in the correct area as this is my first forum post within the apple support community!
I have been using a 21.5" imac running 10.6.8 for the past 5 years to run my small home based architectural design business. I have been using the internal hard drive & backing up the necessary data to a simple usb external hard drive. I am now looking to firstly purchase a new imac 27" retina and purchase new autocad lt 2015 for mac software. I am looking to have another imac (my old mac) running in conjunction with the new mac. I want both macs to be able to access the same data and am slightly unsure what is the best way to achieve this.....As my old mac is currently only running snow leopard and an old version of autocad for mac 2011 it wont run on any more recent OS. Essentially i believe I have 2 main options with this.... (1) I Accept that I have to purchase 2 no. autocad lt 2015 licences @ a cost of £2300. Or option (2), I only run autocad on the new mac as this will be the primary station and the old mac used for primarily for admin & accounts. I have also recently discovered that it is possible to rent autocad licences for £300p/a which may also be another option (3)!
I previously had a problem where my hard drive failed on my mac & lost all data on the internal hard drive, luckily I had been backing up all data regularly to my external hard drive and now loss occurred! Obviously with any new system I want to ensure that my data is safe!
I currently utilise about 250GB of data for business operations but this will obviously grow with time.
In the future I would like to have the option of potentially being able to access the network data remotely via macbook pro whilst abroad although at this stage this really isnt my primary objective. Although I believe I could achieve this through apple remote desktop.
I suppose I should provide some information with regard to the required speed of the system...I regularly open 50-100 photos at the same time totalling around 250-500MB. I would like the system to be able to handle this fairly easily.
I have been trawling through forums and to be honest they are totally confusing me. I have also spent time on the phone to the apple business team and have also discussed my objectives with a member of the apple team in store.
There have been various options advised to me and I really do not know which is the most appropriate route forward.
1 - Using a mac mini as the file server and linking the 2 mac devices to this and backing up the mac mini to an external hard drive to ensure no loss of data.
2 - Using a time capsule as a file server and linking the 2 mac devices to this and backing up the TC to an external hard drive to ensure no loss of data.
3 - Using the new mac hard drive and linking the 2 macs via thunderbolt (old mac does not have thunderbolt and so I guess I would need another new mac?!) and then backing up the data to a time capsule.
4 - Using a RAID based server and linking the 2 no. macs.
Sorry to ramble but any advice really would be greatly received!

    Hi sblemings,
    Welcome to the community.
I think with your scenario you should ask yourself, how complicated do you want the setup to be and how much time would you have to be able to resolve an issue should one occur with this setup.
All the options that have been advised would work but they come with complexity and therefore time.
4 - Using a RAID based server and linking the 2 no. macs.
Sorry to ramble but any advice really would be greatly received!
    option 1
Would be a way to achieve what you want, it would centralise your files and you would only need to backup your file server (as long as all the files you wanted backed up were on it). This could be achieved either using the client and sharing various folders or using Server which would give you more options than you would possibly need.
    option 2
This is exactly like option 1 except that you wouldn't have to administer another mac however you may limit any future growth.
    option 3
This option I probably wouldn't pick, you could achieve this with firewire and use a firewire to thunderbolt adapter (saves you having to buy a new iMac)
    option 4
This option would, depending on your RAID level, give you disk redundancy but remember you would still need to back this up, as RAID is NOT a backup solution.
I would also ask is there a pressing need to keep the old iMac in service and complicating things by having a server / NAS? Could you not just transfer all your information over to this and continue with the one backup? I would say that doing it this was would be the simplest way of achieving what you want from what I can take from your question.
As for remotely accessing your data, if you have the right hardware the way to achieve this would be to use a VPN and connect back to your data. However a potentially easier way for you ,would be to use a service like logmein or teamviewer to connect back.
Hope this helps, and by all means any questions please ask.

  • Shared calendars gone after I set up iCloud

My wife and I have a shared calendar. I moved over to the iCloud and now the shared calendar is gone. I tired to re-share the calendar from her calendar that is still on Mobile Me and it would not go through. Is it not possible to share the old MobileMe calendar with an iCLoud calendar?

I was having the same problem as most of you.  I was not able to share my calendars after the move to iCloud from MobileMe, but my wife was.  I am not sure what caused it, whether it was because the calendars were on share with everyone before the move or not.  I did however figure out a way to solve the issue.
1- Open iCal on your Mac, close iCal on the internet (iCloud)
2- On your Mac choose each calendar (right click on name) and choose stop sharing
3- On your Mac choose each calendar ( right click on name), chose sharing settings, then click on button for "only the people you invite", enter person's apple ID/email, click update.
4- reopen iCal calendar on web
5- Choose calendar that wasn't working, now you should have option to add people to share with, and the person you specified in step 3 will already be there.  Hit "resend calendar invitation" (it will be in blue).  The person you sent the invite to will now be able to share your calendar.
Hope this works for all of you the way it worked for me.

  • HT203521 In iOS8 I can't turn off shared iCloud calendar alerts. I share iCloud calendars with 3 others and am constantly getting their alarms for upcoming appointments. Settings- Notifications- Calendar- Shared Calendar Changes turns off changes only.

Have had new iPhone 6 for 2 months, using iOS 8.  I share iCloud calendars with 3 others and I am getting bombarded with their upcoming appointment alerts.  There seems no way to turn this off.  I went to Settings->Notifications->INCLUDE(Calendar)->Shared Calendar Changes and turned everything off, but this only blocks alerts about new events or changes to events being added to the calendars, it does not block the 5-minute/10-minute/etc. alarms that go off immediately in advance of the appointment.  There used to be a setting in iOS7 in "Mail, Contacts, and Calendars" way at the bottom to turn off alarms from shared calendars, but I don't see that in iOS8.  Any ideas?

Finally figured this out when I read jodiemcneill 's post about Google calendars.  Thanks!
Reposting the basic idea: to turn off event alerts from shared ICloud calendars, select the Calendar App, then click the "info" (i.e., the circled red 'i') icon next to the shared iCloud calendar to be silenced. Go down to "Notifications" and turn the slider off for "Event Alerts: (Allow events on this calendar to display alerts.)"
For good measure, you can also turn off the slider for "Show Changes" to prevent the calendar from displaying messages when shared events are added/modified/deleted, although this can be done "globally" for all shared iCloud Calendars in Settings->Notifications->Calendar->Invitations (turn off all sliders, click "none" for Alert Style).
This has been a major pain in the ... neck ... for the past 3 months.  So glad to start the new year with a suddnely-much-quieter iPhone 6.

  • Shared Calendars from Outlook?

I use Outlook and have access to a few shared calendars. My own and one of the ones I have access to are available to sync to the iPhone, but another one is not. Any ideas on what differentiating factors would allow some to be recognized and not others?

Can someone break thsi down for me please. We are using small business server 2011 and everyone has a windows pc but me, I have a MBP. in outlook I can opend shared calendars no problem but when I try to us the "delegate" tab in ical's preferences nothing comes up. I cant neither share y calendar or open ones that have been shared with me. The only way aound this at this point is that I have to physically add their accounts on my MBP but I don't want to do this as this can be invading privacy since I can also get their mails. I know I can untick email when i add their accounts but the fact that I still ahve the option to tick it annoys me as I wouldnt want others doing this with my account. Can someone point me in the right direction here.
P.S. One of my colleagues bought a MBP yesterday and his was as simple as plug and play. He can share his calendar and open shared ones with ical but I still cant he his. We are both running lion. I'm starting to think this is more of a server issue with permissions or something, mind you I have basic computer knowledge.

  • Shared Calendar

I am trying to configure Shared Calendar usage, basically according to the section 'Shared Calendar LDAP Lookup Configuration' on the page
    http://docs.sun.com/app/docs/doc/819-2568/6n4rm7fit?a=view .
I have service.wcap.userprefs.ldapproxyauth ="yes" set in /etc/opt/SUNWics5/config/ics.conf, and I find an ACI in LDAP which is almost identical to the second one shown on the doc page. Is there anything else I have missed?
The problem is that calendars subscribed to via Outlook are not given access permission. Calendars which are shared via the UWC work correctly.
    Thanks.

    Hi,
I'm not that familar with the outlook connector (anybody?), but a point of clarification:
Calendars subscribed are not given permission... does this mean that you subscribe to a calendar within Outlook, but when you view the calendar in Outlook you can't see anything?
If you view the same subscribed calendar within UWC you can see events?
Do they calendar logs provide any insight into the problem?
You may want to try logging a support call and trying the latest outlook connector patch (122018-05). This also requires that you apply the Calendar Server patch (116577-33 or above) and Comms Express patch (118540-31 or above)
    Cheers,
    Shane.

  • Errors Sharing Calendar in Outlook 2010

    Hello,
I have an issue with sharing calendars to someone that is in the same Exchange org on Exchange 2013 CU3 when using Outlook 2010. When trying to share I get this error message:
"Error while preparing to send sharing message"
The exchange org that I'm trying to connect to is published from behind a TMG deployment, and effectively everyone is an external user. I've tried doing a wireshark packet capture at the time when I get the error, and from the information I see, it looks
like its trying to connect to the right target. At the same time, if I watch the TMG logs as I'm generating this error with a filter to see all IP from the address of my connecting location) I see no attempt to connect to TMG at all.
I've checked in the event log of the work stations I'm using (tried more than one) and I get an event ID 300, which basically just states the same message as above, with P1 value of 301931, P2 value of 14.0.7015.1000, P3 value of 634y and P4 value of
    0x80004005.
I've found an article for this exact same issue that applies to Outlook 2007, so I'm wondering if it's basically the same issue, but Microsoft haven't spotted or updated the article:
    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2836889
I've found this article (and more) but none do the trick for me:
    http://www.experts-exchange.com/Software/Server_Software/Email_Servers/Exchange/Q_26529686.html
I've also seen one that asks to check whether the DB is corrupt and to check autodiscover, but an exchange connectivity test against my domain comes back all green. I've also tried to make the same check with the same client against an Office 365 mailbox
and Outlook 2010, and I do not get the error there (guess it might be because they're using different authentication mechanism). I've tried a few things (patching Office 2010 up to the latest SPs and updates, updating the client with .Net updates, installing
.Net 4.5.1( but none work for me.
I've also found that this is not an issue if using Outlook 2013.
Does anyone have ideas on what might be the cause of this?
    Thanks

One thing that I'm sometimes seeing when I hit the send request from Outlook 2010 is a line in the TMG log that indicates it's going to
    http://domainname/autodiscover/autodiscover.xml (where 'domainname'
is the real domain name in use). We have a rule for this with a /* path that directs traffic off to another set of servers not related to email at all. I think I'm going to try adding a rule above this one with /autodiscover/* as the only path,
and do a deny/redirect to the full autodiscover address.
Incidentally, if I run a wireshark capture when doing this from an Outlook 2010 client, I see that its trying to hit the HTTP address of my TMG server, but I see no traffic at the TMG server (not from the log view anyway). If I do the same from an Outlook
2013 client, I see wireshark trying to hit the same HTTP listener address, but at TMG I see an EWS lookup.
I'll update when I've tried the new TMG rule.

  • Sharing Calendar with another .Mac User

My husband I both have iphone 3g's and separate .mac accounts, but we would like to be able to sync our calendars...is this possible? If so how do we set it up?

    Hi there brucedm!
I have some information that might prove useful to you about iCloud. First, iCloud is a free service, and you can find more information on the basics of it in the following webpage:
Apple - iCloud - Your content. On all your devices.
    http://www.apple.com/icloud/
I also have some more specific information for you regarding iCloud calendars and sharing calendars. This article is an overview of calendar sharing:
    iCloud: Calendar sharing overview
    http://support.apple.com/kb/PH2689
And this one is about activating sharing on your iCloud calendars:
iCloud: Share a calendar with others

Thanks for using the Apple Support Communities. Have a good one!

  • Ovi Calendar server back end lost shared calendar ...

Setup a shared calendar between the Ovi web suite, and two devices, a C5 and an N8
Day 1 - Syncing fine between web and phones
Day 2 - Go into web page, now the calendar is shared with 0 others! Each phone also has a separate calendar. No configuration changes were made between days 1 and 2
It seems this to be a major bug in the Ovi Calendar suite? Is the Calendar service now deprecated and shutting down? The Calendar web page looks and feels like it's not being actively updated and supported

Thanks so much for your comment ~morgen.
Sorry, I should have mentioned, that it what my first thought so I tested by ensuring the email address associated with the user account (not hosted on the server but by Google Apps) is recieving all other mail.
    I have also tried:
    - Setting all accounts (calendar, email and contact card with associated email address) in another local user on a defferent Mac. So it's not a local user or Mail app issue.
    - Sending invites from different Calendar apps and email accounts - iCloud, Gmail (both using Apple Calendar and the web interface).
That's why I came back around to thinking it must be calendar server related. However is there is absolutly no conntact with the server with incoming email invites I must be looking in the wrong place (and the wrong forum - sorry!).
Does anyone have any ideas where I should be focusing my efforts?
    Many thanks in advance.

  • Sharepoint foundation 2013 collaboration - for a VERY small workgroup. Right choice???

    Hi!
Let me start with a short background:
I've developed an ASP.Net application which currently uses Apache Solr for search and retrieval operations and for that purpose it works well. However, the users of this application has started to ask for facilities such as discussion forums, document-collaboration
(webdav, versioning, workflow...), calendars etc. and I'm faced with a feeling that I'm about to embark on a journey where I will develop functionality which is present in some of the "free" tools that Microsoft offers.
I've downloaded Search Server Express 2010 and in a very short amount of time I was able to develop a rather, well, sophisticated collaboration environment which gives me almost all of the above. Search is a KEY-feature that is one of the major concerns
for me as Solr provides alot of very sophisticated search-related operations but I've heard alot of good stuff about the Search Server included in SP Foundation 2013, which makes me wonder what that would give me if I take the plunge...
I'm a complete newbie to this SP-related stuff so I thought I'd better ask the pros in this forum so I don't make any unwise decisions leaving me in the dust :)
Soo, my dear fellow forum members - what would be the best way to go about this given the following facts:
    small workgroup (8 people)
    possibility to handle office-document, pdf-files and plain-text
discussion forums (both team-based and public)
    team calendars
possibility to provide, say, a REST-api for digesting text-based data
powerful search facility able to index all of the document formats mentioned above
I'm leaning towards SharePoint Foundation 2013... what do you say - will it provide the above?
Many thanks to you all in advance,
    /Peter

Simple answer: yes. SharePoint Foundation sounds like an excellent choice. There's one question that you'll need to answer: 8 people is not much, but how much data are they working with? That's probably not going to be an issue, but something you need
    to be aware of.
