Sharing Itunes with another party on same computer

I am currently sharing my itunes with my younger sister, on the same laptop, and she has her own different tast in music, as do I. So now, instead of listening to Death Cab for Cutie, I am stuck with her Pussycat Dolls, and Ludacris. I have tried different ways to resolve this, but I keep getting stuck with her music..Is there something I should be doing differently, or am I stuck listening to her terrible music????? Any ideas???

Hey Boca Jr.,
the easiest way will be starting iTunes 7 holding shift, this will let you create or select another library. Another option is create seperate playlists to sort the music.
This article: http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=300432 also has some tips that may help you.

  • Sharing iTunes with new user on same computer

    Hi--
I'm adding a user to my computer and I want him to be able to access my music. I've moved the music to a public folder, updated everything; however, when I try to add to library in his account, the music folder has a minus bar on it, even though share music is turned on in MY user account.
I figure I'm doing something wrong, but don't know what it is, and followed all the suggestions on the apple page.
    Any other ideas? Thanks!

I don't suppose there's anyway I can just "UNDO" everything and start all over?
Unfortunately no, however we can try to resolve this. Inside your username home folder is the sub-folder labeled Music. Did you just move the iTunes Music folder that's inside the iTunes? If so then you'll need to put it back into the iTunes folder and move the entire folder to your username music folder. The iTunes Library & iTunes Music Library.xml file within the iTunes folder contains your library & playlists info. They need to be kept in the main iTunes folder.

  • Sharing address book with another account on same computer

How do you simply share the Lion 10.7.1 address book with another user account on the same computer?

    miniman,
I just double checked on my laptop that I share the music files with.
When I did the steps from the above post, my music showed up just fine.
The other account was blank as I didn't have any music in there anyway.
All I had to do after the steps above was to "Add to Library" under the "File" menu. I then selected the entire "iTunes Music" folder in the shared library and added all the songs to it... Now you would not have to add all the songs if the other account didn't want them all.... So, you could be selective.
Bottom Line.... It does work and then you only have one copy of the "iTunes Music" folder on the one hard drive... No duplicates....
I did NOT have to have the box checked that said "Copy files to iTunes Music folder"..........

  • Sharing Itunes music between accounts on same computer

    Hi
Is it possible to share Itunes music library between three accounts on same computer so if my wife logs into her account she can see my music library

    This should help:
iTunes: How to share music between different accounts on a single computer
Note that when it says "publicly accessible location", it needs to be a place where everyone has read and write access. The most common such place is the Shared folder in the Users folder, but you can place the music elsewhere if you change the access permissions manually (don't start tinkering with permissions unless you're confident you know what you're doing and can reverse things if they get messed up).

  • Sharing music with other users on same computer...possible?

I'd like to be able to share music between users who can log in on the same computer. Is this possible and how.
I currently have all the music in the admiistrators log in and can't see it when I log in as a regular user.
    Thanks for any help

    Hi,
Follow the instructions given in this article. http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=93195
You might also want to uncheck the preference in the other Users accounts to prevent them from adding the song file to the hard disk when importing music. This means that only YOU as the admin can add files to the Library. You will find this preference under iTunes in the menu bar, Click on the "Advanced" tab and then the "General" Tab.

    Ben.

  • Lion - how can I share files with another account on same computer

Lion has dropped public files and airdrop only works over wifi.  How do I share files between two accounts on same computer?

I found and turned on "system preferences  / file sharing"  but also had to go to Finder preferences and select show "Hard Disks" to be able to see other users public folder.

  • HT3819 how can i share itunes with users on the same computer?

My husband and I both have separate user profiles on our Mac.  Is there a way we can access all the music files from our itunes between the two profiles?

I puzzled this out a while back. Lets see if i can at least point you in the right direction.
From the Admin account open System Prefrences>Sharing
on the left there is a check box for "file Sharing" check this box.
to the right you can add folders, add "iTunes Media"
then you can add Users. add the users that can share that folder.
then open the other account that wants to share that folder.
open their iTunes>Prefrences>Advanced. Uncheck the box that says "Copy files to iTunes Media folder when adding to library"
then open Finder and the shared iTunes Media folder should be on the left... (fingers crossed)
the only problem is that any time you add media to the admin account, you have to go into the other account and add it to that itunes.
hassle, but it's what i do.
    Good Luck

  • ITunes Library not seen - Sharing Library with another account on same Mac

I have a done a search and tried some of the suggestions, but it doesn't appear to be working.
    Background:
Had iTunes on a Windows machine.
    Purchased about 60 tunes
Ripped all my CDs into the library
    Bought an iBook
Purchased about 30 tunes on the iBook
Used the Network to copy the Music files to the iBook
    iBook appears to have everything
Bought at 17" iMac - did a Target Disk transfer from iBook
Reformatted 17" and traded it in for 20" iMac
Did a Target Disk transfer from iBook to new 20"
Under my account on the iMac, I can see/use my entire library. Per suggestions here, I moved the iTunes Music folder to my Public diretory so that my wife could see the library too. When I loaded iTunes on my wife's account and did an Add to Library the only thing that shows up in her library is the 30 tunes I purchased using the iBook.
I have both accounts setup to point to the Public directory.
How do I make this work??
Also, I really only want one library to be shared between both of our accounts on both machines, but I do want the ability to take the library with me when I go mobile with the iBook. Is this possible?

I read the referenced thread and although the person got the desired results, I see two problems with the method they used. It sounds like they simply mad another copy of the library on the hard drive. First, this wastes disk space as you now have to copies of every song on the hard drive. Second, whenever music is added to either of the libraries, the other library will not see it and be out of "sync" unless you manually copy the new songs to the other directory.
I am looking for a solution in which their is only one central library.
    Thanks
    Carl

  • Sharing iphoto and itunes with accounts on the same computer

I have admin rights on the PC and would like to give the guest account access (on the same PC) to the i-photo and i-tunes libraries under my account. How can I do that

    What version of iPhoto?
For iPhoto 09 (version 8.0.2) and later:
    What you mean by 'share'.
If you want the other user to be able to see the pics, but not add to, change or alter your library, then enable Sharing in your iPhoto (Preferences -> Sharing), leave iPhoto running and use Fast User Switching to open the other account. In that account, enable 'Look For Shared Libraries'. Your Library will appear in the other source pane.
Any user can drag a pic from the Shared Library to their own in the iPhoto Window.
Remember iPhoto must be running in both accounts for this to work.
If you want the other user to have the same access to the library as you: to be able to add, edit, organise, keyword etc.
Quit iPhoto in both accounts. Move the Library to the Users / Shared Folder
(You can also use an external HD set to ignore permissions, a Disk Image or even partition your Hard Disk.)
In each account in turn: Double click on the Library to open it. (You may be asked to repair the Library Permissions.) From that point on, this will be the default library location. Both accounts will have full access to the library, in fact, both accounts will 'own' it.
However, there is a catch with this system and it is a significant one. iPhoto is not a multi-user app., it does not have the code to negotiate two users simultaneously writing to the database, and trying will cause db corruption. So only one user at a time, and back up, back up back up.
    Regards

  • Trouble Sharing iTunes Library w/2 Accounts/Same Computer

So I moved the music folder to the Public folder and on the last step when I click Open nothing happens
To share your music with multiple user accounts on one computer
    On Mac OS X
    On Windows
To listen to another account's music files
    Open iTunes.
From the iTunes menu, choose Preferences.
    Click Advanced.
Deselect the option to "Copy files to iTunes Media folder when adding to library file."
    Click OK.
From the File menu, choose Add to Library.
Note: Windows users can also choose Add Folder to Library to add a folder of songs.
In the window that opens, navigate to the location where the other user's music is saved (the iTunes Media folder in this example).
    _*Click Open.*_

I tried that - but now have some follow up questions: (i moved the itunes data, incl movies and music, to the shared drive)
    1) while itunes in MY account logged in, when my wife logs in, her itunes picks up un-updated media. so if i added albums and such, it's not reflected in her account.
    2) apps - is there a way to also merge the apps, as we both have iphones and share accounts?
    THanks for the help!!!

  • Sharing iTunes library across accounts on same computer

    Hi
I have just bought my first Mac. I have set up an account for me and an account for my wife but I'm wondering if it is possible for us to share the same iTunes library rather than having a lot of duplicate music. Can this be done?
    Thanks in advance
    Graeme

Oh yes, welcome to Apple, and the Apple forums,
I hope you enjoy your new iMac,
Well, the bad news is I don't think that will work, when I tried it one my computer, one User couldnt access the other's Music folder. However, I do think you could make your iTunes Music Folder be a folder in the Public folder for your account, which would allow anyone on your computer, or on your network, to use it.
To change the location of your music folder to a folder in your Public folder, follow these steps:
-Go to your Music folder (Users-Username-Music)
    -Copy the folder called "iTunes"
-Go to that User's Public folder (User-Username-Public)
-Paste your iTunes folder here (depending on the size of the folder, this may take a while)
-In iTunes, go to: iTunes-Preferences-Advanced, and look at the "iTunes Music Folder Location"
-Click the word "Change..." next to it, and choose the new folder (the one you made in the Public folder)( you only have to do this on the account that alread has the music if you want to delete the orignal music folder to save space otherwise leave it as the one in the Music folder for this account)
-Do this for the other account on your Computer, by selecting the same folder in the first user's Public Folder as the new Music Folder.
-Select "Consolidate Library..." from the Advanced menu (not the Advanced menu n Preferences, the one on the bear at the top of the Monitor), this will copy the music from the folder into that iTunes Library.
I sure hope no one else posted an answer while I wrote this, hope it helps.
Edit: I will test this as well.

Is there a way I can move movies from one itunes library to another on the same computer?

Locate them in the Windows Explorer, move or copy those files as you would any other, and drag them into the open iTunes window when the second library is loaded. If you're using two iTunes libraries on one user account, you only need to locate the files; otherwise, they need to be put in a shared area.
