Sharing script among other machines over network

Hi,
I have a script that does the following:
1) Opens a pre-made excel workbook (BVHigh.xls)
2) prompts the user to input data through two input prompt boxes (name and grade level for ten students) which then populates the ten sheets of the workbook
3) Renames the tabs of the appropriate sheets
How do I enable the script to be shared among other users over the network? I've included the script and the excel workbook in a folder on our network attached storage device but when I test it from another computer, it simply opens a new workbook rather than the one specified.
Here is the beginning of the script:
tell application "Microsoft Excel"
try
activate
open workbook workbook file name "BVHigh.xls"
activate object worksheet "names"
set myrange to range "A2" of worksheet "names"
set myname to input box prompt "Please type a Student Name title "Students"
set value of myrange to myname
set name of sheet 3 to myname
set myrange to range "B2" of worksheet "names"
set myname to input box prompt "What grade level is this ¬student?" title "Grade Level?"
set value of myrange to myname
This works well on the machine on which it was created (Mac Book Pro- 10.6.2)
Surely I must be missing something! We have mostly eMacs running 10.5.8 and all are running Office 2008.
I could just provide the excel workbook on its own and have the teachers do more on their own but I'd really like to showcase the abilities of Applescript!
Any ideas/suggestions/help will be greatly appreciated!
I also would like to "save as" the workbook based on other data that is provided by the user (from a cell value) but am mainly interested in resolving the sharing protocol which I am clearly missing.
Thanks in advance!

The most obvious problem is that you're just telling Excel to open a file without any consideration of where that file might be.
open workbook workbook file name "BVHigh.xls"
How is Excel to know where this file is? I'm actually surprised it works at all - even on your machine, but I assume that means Excel has a preset list of locations it checks.
At the very least I'd expect this line to require a path to the file you want to open:
open workbook workbook file "Macintosh HD:path:to:BVHigh.xls"
Of course, this begs another question of how to do that in a multi-system environment where you may or may not have control over the path to the file. Either you will need to standardize on the file location, or you may need to craft a more robust script - for example one that's aware of relative paths, or that prompts the user to select the file.

  • Sees other machines on Network, but no internet

    Hi,
Suddenly my MacPro can't access the net but still can communicate on the network with my other Macs and PC.
Straight into the modem it won't get on the internet, the G5 and others will, with the same cable.
I reinstalled the 10.5.6 OS update, also boot from my Backup thinking it would be a software problem, but it does not work either.
    Any ideas ?
Could it be a hardware problem, but then, how could the house network work ?
Thanks in advance for any help.

It sounds like there are a handful of issues here.
First off, are you really having problems with DNS, or DHCP?
If you're having problems with DNS, try setting your other machines up to use OpenDNS, as described here, except select the network interface you're actually using, rather than "Built In Ethernet", in step 2.
If you're having problems with DHCP, that's likely the fault of your router.
Finally, make sure your router also has the most up-to-date firmware installed; routers can sit on shelves in stores long enough that there have been multiple firmware updates released in the interim.
Finally, how do you have your router and modem connected up?
The way this should be done is the cable modem should be connected to the Internet or WAN port on your router, and your router should be set to share an IP address.
One last thing you might want to try before you do all that is to unplug your cable modem and your router. Wait about a minute, then plug in your cable modem. Once all its lights are on, plug in your router. Then try your tests again.
Also, what kind of cable modem is it? Some have built-in routers, and if yours is one of those we might need to take some extra steps to get things set up correctly.

  • Printer sharing problem: printer not found by other Macs over network

We have 2 iMacs and 1 PowerBook, all connected to network through a Belkin router. One of the iMacs has an Epson Stylus hardwired (USB) to it. Printer sharing is ON. In the past, the other two Macs found the printer over the network and printed fine. Recently, they can no longer find the Epson over the network, indeed, when we try to "add printer" in their Printer Utilities, they no longer find any printer at all. Why did it use to work and then stop for no apparent reason, no changes were made (except for occasional need to restart the router if we lost our connection)? What are we missing?

As you suggested, I repaired permissions in all my Macs. That helped; the other Macs could find the shared printer. Then later on I needed to shut off both the host iMac and the printer. When I turned them back on, once again the other 2 Macs couldn't find the printer?! Since I had just repaired permissions earlier in the day I didn't think it could be that again. Then, I printed one page from the hardwired host iMac, and voila!, right after that page printed the other two Macs could spot the shared printer over the network again. I'm glad they came back online, but wish I knew what the heck was going on?! Why would printing one page from the host bring the others back, and did the earlier repair of permissions really have anything to do with it??

  • How do I use time machine to backup to external drive on other machine on network

I have 2 x McPros, 2 x iMacs and 2 x MacBook Pro all integrated in the same home network. I have a DroboPro Network which can only be recognised as a Shared device by one MacPro only. There are 2 DroboPro 8 Bay RAID devices attached via Firewire to one MacPro.
With Mavericks how can I ensure that
    a. The networked Drobo can be seen by all computers as a shared device (it is connected via Ethernet to central Gigabit switch)
    b. That, failing the networked Drobo sharing, how can I ensure all computers on network will always have access for Time Machine backups using the DroboPro attached via Firewire to the one MacPro.
Many thanks, it's probably right under my nose.
    Darrin

Time Machine will only back up internal and directly connected external drives. It will not back up a network attached storage device.  You'll have to use some other software to back up the NAS.

  • OS X 10.5.3 update... Does Time Machine over network still work

Anyone updated to the new 10.5.3 and know if Time Machine still works over the network via AEBS?

I was hoping 10.5.3 would fix things for time machine/time capsule, I had issues with it hijacking my laptop and the network doing fsck_hfs. So I looked forward to fixes, had been doing only back up now, since having to reset everything. I tried it, it took an our to get past preparing, then had 15 meg out of 2 gig backing up, stuck there for hours. I finally killed it by dismounting the disk. When my disappointment reduces I may try a fresh start. I am sure they worked very had on it.

  • Time Capsule - Sharing a USB hard disk over network

    Hello,
I've been trying to get a definite answer to this issue on this forum and others, but couldn't. Sorry if it was already answered and if my thorough search wasn't enough.
I have a Time Capsule and I wish to add an external hard drive to my setup. Since I want the HD to be shared on the network and be accessible through my wifi setup at home, I want to add it on the USB port on the Time Capsule and then make it a shared HD over the network.
Seems that if this is a stroll in the park with the Airport Extreme base, it's not that straightforward with Time Capsule.
All the articles I could find were about adding a HD backup to the TC, but it's not what I'm looking for. I really wish to simply add a HD through the USB port and allow the network users to access it (don't need it to be backed up on the TC !).
My network has an Airport Express as an extender and I have to point out that the TC is not really acting as a router as the place I live in has direct connection to a central router through a RJ45 wall plug.
Any ideas, walkthroughs ? (or any good ideas for a not expensive WLAN RAID solution ?)
Thank you so much for any help you could provide me.
    Cheers

    To expand on "Glasses" comments:
*Attached Another Hard Disk to the TC But How Do I Access It?*
    Open a Finder window
Select the Time Capsule in the Sidebar on the left.
Click "Connect As..." in the upper right of the window.
Enter the Name of your Time Capsule & its' password (Note: NOT your own Username & password).
Check "Remember password in my Keychain."
You should now see a blue share folder with the name of your Time Capsule.
Other hard disk attached to the Time Capsule’s USB port will also appear here as blue share folders as well. To mount them on your desktop double-clicking their blue folders. If you had a separate password setup for those disks in Airport Utility then enter that password if asked. Otherwise, it should now mount on your desktop.
Let us know if this solves your issue.
    Cheers!

  • Home Sharing Not Working With iPhone Over Network

    Hey,
I'm new to this whole support thing so I'll do my best to explain the issue!
On both iTunes and my iPhone 4s, I have turned on Home Sharing using the same Apple ID. Both are also connected to the same network which is my home wi-fi. I can't seem to connect no matter how hard I try. music won't stream from my pc to my phone and I can't use the app called Remote, an app that lets me control iTunes. I have even gone as far as to mess with my firewall where I allowed two new rules that had the ports Remote uses.
If anyone can spread some light on this shinanigan, I will be sooooo happy!
    Thanks in advance!

    ...And that didn't work either.

  • OSX delay in seeing other machines on network.

I have successfully setup my windows/osx network. I am running 3 machines (G5, G4PB,XP-PC Laptop) My G5 has about a 5-10 minute delay when recognizing new computers on the network (both the G4 and PC) My XP machine recognizes the macs immediately upon joining the network. I have all firewalls disabled on all machines including the imbedded windows firewall on network connections. The only other mac program i run for internet monitoring is "Little Snitch".
    G5-10.4.6
    G4-10.4.6
    PC-XP
Is this a common problem? Any suggestions?
Thanks so much for any assistance.

Craig, it sounds like DNS is not working properly.
Are the machines getting their IP addresses from a router on the network (DHCP server)?
Be sure that this G5 is picking up the proper settings.
    SystemPreferences>Network>Configure...
If it's DHCP, you likely won't have anything in DNS Servers. try putting the IP address of the router in that "Optional" box, Then apply.
Also...has this G5 been restarted lately? If not, try it. reboot. You could just reset the network on the G5, but a reboot may cure a few ills.

  • ITunes Library and Time Machine over network

    Hello everyone,
I've got a 2008 unibody MacBook running Mountain Lion, I've been using Time Machine on a SeaGate external HDD, in addition to storing my iTunes Media on the drive.  This external drive was always plugged into my computer via USB.  Well the drive crashed so I've been looking into alternatives.  I bought an Extreme Base Station and was hoping I'd be able to plug a similar external drive and achieve the same results wirelessly.  After some research, it seems this is very unreliable.  I've also come across a WD MyBookLive (NAS) which has a lot of software built in to act as an iTunes server and work with Time Machine (which sounds perfect), however I haven't gotten either of those functions to work.  I'm guessing this might be a firmware issue on the MyBookLive, but it's also not letting me update it.  What can you guys suggest?  What would be the best way to make this work?  Thanks in advance!

I could see this being a real issue for me. Is there any news on this front?
    Here's my background/intention with TM:
    1. I purchased a brand new MacBook for a family member, it's her first Mac experience
    2. My wife and I have have MacBooks which we adore (Plus 3 iPhones in the family, Apple TV, AirTunes, the works -- Don't brand me as a "Mac Hater" which these forums love to do as soon as you point out an oversight. let's stay on topic, please!!)
    3. We have a 500GB USB drive on my Wife's system for TM use
    4. I have a 150GB USB drive for my own TM use.
    5. In an effort minimize the amount of USB devices needed, I want to share my wife's 500GB drive for all of us to use TM with it. Seems logical, no?
    6. Well, it's a MacBook it is mounted on so it will go to sleep at times, even go on the road.
Now, before people get excited (which they love to do here when you point out a potential issue with our beloved Macs) I fully understand the drive will not always be available. This is already the case as my TM drive is at home and I am at work with my MacBook as I type this. TM is not freaking out and will work happily when I mount the TM drive.
However, will my stepdaughter have a corrupted backup if she has the remote TM drive mounted when my wife puts it to sleep? Even if no backup is running?? My SD is rather sharp, she understands that to do a backup she needs to mount the share and click "back up now" on TM. But should she forget to unmount when she's done is in for disaster??? That wouldn't make sense but from I'm reading here it sounds like the case?

  • Time Machine over network: can't see hard drive

I've connected an external firewire 800 drive to our server and then chosen it in Server Preference as a drive that users can backup to, however when I try to select it in the user's Time Machine prefs I can't see the drive. Any ideas?

Is no one else having this problem?

  • Can i make a Time Machine over network?

i have 2 macbook pro i want to make a time machine backup and save it in the other macbook pro because i have no space left to save it in the same HDD.
I dont know something like sending AirDrop while it is written. or connect the macbook pro HDD trough firewire to the other.

Yes, you might be able to do that, although it's unlikely to work satisfactorily.
It's much better to use an external HD or Time Capsule.
To use the "other" Mac's internal HD,  you'll have to make a second partition on it for the backups.  That needs to be 2-3 times the size of the data on the "source" Mac, so you'll likely have a space problem.
See #3 in Using Disk Utility to add the partition, then  Time Machine - Frequently Asked Question #22 for setup instructions.

  • Lost AirPrint to iPad, other machines on network still print?

I have three computers, including one iPad, on a network with my printer. All three have been working fine but now I am unable to print with the iPad. (the other two still work). The IPad seems to find the printer but there appears to be no communication between the two. I have reset the network, reset the iPad and reset the HP printer.

Could there be a job stuck in the Queue in the iPad AirPrint app?  Can you see it in the multitasking dock?  If so, check to see if there is a job pending, and cancel it.

  • APC UPS and Mac OS X - Getting other machines on network to shutdown safely

I am considering purchasing the APC UPS SMT2200I. Apparently it will only work with one Mac connected via USB and you can set the connected Mac to shutdown after a period of time on UPS power (via the Energy Panel http://tinyurl.com/38zmmu3). If I go with this solution I will connect to an iMac.
Is there an (elegant) way that I can get other computers on my network to safely shutdown when the iMac shuts down due to an alert from the UPS?

    Hi,
Most APC Smart-UPSs will work with the Mac, you don't necessarily need to get such a big unit as the SMT2200I, it's probably overkill. You're probably better off going with something like a SMT1500 for your Mac. It's pretty much the biggest unit you can get without having to install a custom power line. You can set the shut down settings in the options to safely shut down your Mac if the power goes out.
