Shift Linux - A "new" ArchLinux based distro

Shift Linux is a work in progress that aims to be a desktop distro based on a solid Arch foundation...
Currently asking for people which would like to collaborate somehow with the proyect.
You don't need any specific knowledge, just the will to help (and learn too!)...

  • Arch based distro - same repository?

    hey,
    i got a question.
    let's say i'm making a new ,archlinux based distro. must i use own repositorys then or can i just use archs repositories? i won't really make a new distro (no time for that) but i always asked myself this question.
    pure curiosity.

    Ιf it's rolling, I guess there is no problem, but you need to make it clear (on the distro site for example) that the most of work done is thanks to the Archlinux devs, if you are gonna use the official repos.
    Chakra-project for example is Arch+KDEmod, thus it currently* uses the official repos.
    *they are gonna make their distro, afaik, non-rolling.

  • Differences between Arch linux and RHEL-based Distros?

    Hi there!
    So, I am officially trying to make the permanent switch from Windows to Linux. I've used Linux in the past, from Ubuntu, to Fedora, to Mint, and I've always liked Arch the most. Nothing beats the feeling of an OS you had a hand in setting up.
    I'm wondering though, what are the differences in Arch vs distros like Red Hat, Fedora, and CentOS? I recently picked up a book called, "The Linux Bible" which provides a course-like approach to learning the intricacies of Linux. I'm wondering if it would be easily possible to adapt the lessons from that to Arch, or to use Fedora or another RHEL-based distro like it suggests.
    Thanks

    The biggest issue I find is with SE Linux. I don't know if this is default in RHEL itself but Fedora uses it. If I understood it properly, though, I doubt it would be such an issue!
    EDIT: I think it would be best to learn one distro first, using documentation for that distro. So if you want to use the book, install something that matches the book as closely as possible. If you want to use Arch, use the wiki as your primary documentation. I say this because there is a big difference between figuring out the ways in which two distros differ when you understand the GNU/Linux basics and (I imagine) trying to do so when you are still learning those basics. I don't just mean ls, grep etc. - other systems use those - but the stuff which is common to any GNU/Linux distro. Obviously this applies even more if you also are learning stuff like ls, grep, cd etc. (which might be true if you're moving from Windows rather than, say, OS X or one of the BSDs).

  • Lunar linux and sourced based distros in general

    Whilst looking for versions of linux that I haven't tried as of yet, I stumbled across Lunar.
    Distrowatch:
    Lunar is a source based Linux distribution with a unique package management system which builds each software package, or module, for the machine it is being installed on. Though it can take a while to do a complete Lunar installation it's worth it as it tends to be quite fast, once installed! In the beginning Lunar was a fork of Sorcerer GNU Linux (SGL). The fork occurred in late January to early February of 2002 and was originally made up of a small group of people who wanted to collaboratively develop and extend the Sorcerer technology. The original name for the project was Lunar-Penguin but the group decided to re-christen it Lunar Linux while the Lunar-Penguin name has become a sort of umbrella which the team could use if they decide to collaboratively develop something besides Lunar Linux.
    Has anyone tried this flavour yet? Might give it a whirl on a VM (compile times on a VM might be a deal breaker though!). Something which strikes me as odd is the fact the forums are closed.. link. I cant find any information as to why this is the case.
    Does the community think that sourced based distributions are better than pre-compiled versions? There dont seem to be that many sourced based about, but of those that are they seem to tout speed as a big plus.
    Gentoo "Extreme performance, configurability and a top-notch user and developer community are all hallmarks of the Gentoo experience".
    Lunar "locally compiling an optimized system tailored toward the users specific needs. This should result in a lean and optimized operating system for example both tout speed as being one of their major plus points".
    Is the linux world lazy, and just like the ease of .deb .rpm pacman etc? Because if sourced based is better, then surely there would be more sourced based distros about? So this leads me to think that either potential sourced based bonuses dont outweigh the time it takes to compile, or the linux world is just plain lazy (hardware issues aside as a reason not to used sourced based).

    Oh well, now I've found arch
    Same experience here.
    I won't call Lunar a bad distro. It has some appeal for a small niche-within-a-niche. However, because of the small size of the project and community, the quality suffers.
    I've tried it in the past on the most generic hardware I had at the time and there were always installation issues which turned out to be showstoppers for me.
    There are so many distros, yet in my view, there are so few high-quality distros.
    Debian (big), Slackware (small), Arch (small), Fedora (big), and Centos (small) are all good, solid distros.
    I find once I venture outside of these solid systems, lack of quality and annoying bugs manifest themselves. And even though a project may look intriguing for its innovation or fresh approach, unexpected behavior is to be expected.
    YMMV

  • Making arch-based distro

    Hello.
    I started to make Arch-based distro. I have fully installed Arch + Openbox.
    I have a couple of questions:
    - How can I make an ISO from installed system I have?
    - I haven't installed drivers for my graphics because if I respin it into a new system, users with nvidia graphics, for e.g. will involve with problems then. How can I avoid that, i mean, is there a script that will recognize graphics and download drivers for it?
    That's all for now. Arch with Openbox and some setup rox.

  • Auto Creation of new requisitions based on a list of items

    Auto Creation of new requisitions based on a list of items
    We are starting discussions to determine how we could auto-create requisitions based on a list of servers in order to perform periodic health checks.
    One approach we thought about was creating one service request that could spawn multiple requests, again based on a list and using a set schedule (weekly, monthly, quarterly, yearly, etc.)
    Has anyone implemented this and can provide some guidance/tips?

    You can check this article for more references on how to use sp_helptext object_name stored procedure:
    http://blog.sqlauthority.com/2007/05/25/sql-server-stored-procedure-to-display-code-text-of-stored-procedure-trigger-view-or-object/
    I also suggest trying commercial tools to sync and compare the stored procedures between two databases. We used
    ApexSQL Diff, but I've also heard some good things about
    Devart's tools.

    Mail does not create new emails based on the highlighted mailbox, but rather according the receiving mailbox of whatever individual email happens to be highlighted. This was not the case prior to Lion. Is this a bug or an error on my part? (I do have the setting for creating new emails from the highlighted mailbox checked.)

    The questions about time was not only because of thinking about the Time Machine, but also possible impact on recognizing which messages remaining on a POP server (doesn't apply to IMAP) have been already downloaded. In the Mail folder, at its root level, in Mail 3.x there is a file named MessageUidsAlreadyDownloaded3 that should prevent duplicate downloading -- some servers may not communicate the best with respect to that, and the universal index must certainly be involved in updating that index file. If it corrupts, it can inhibit proper downloading. However, setting the account up in a New User Account and having the same problem does not point that way, unless your POP3 server is very different from most.
    That universal index is also typically involved when messages are meant to be moved from the Inbox to another mailbox -- in Mail 3.x the message does not move, but rather is copied, and then erased from the origin mailbox. That requires updating the Envelope Index to keep track of where the message is, and should keep track of where it is supposed to have been removed after the "Move".

  • How to set a default start and/or end date for New Events based on trigger date.

    I'm using the CalendarActivityListener to get current row when clicking on an existing event. As per previous posts this listener gives you access to event detail including Start Date, End Date, etc.
    However, what I want to do is to default the start (and end) dates for New Events based on the trigger date.
    I've tried the CalendarListener and can grab the Trigger Date from it - however, I can't see a way to pass this directly to the popup/dialog I'm using to create the new event.
    At present I'm putting the TriggerDate into the ADFContext session scope e.g. ADFContext.getCurrent().getSessionScope().put("TriggerDate",calendarEvent.getTriggerDate());
    Then, I've tried multiple approaches to try and "get" the TriggerDate from session scope to drop it into my new Calendar Event basically, I'm trying to default the InputField(s) associated with the Start Date using the value from the session - I've tried
    1. setting the default value for the InputField in the jspx using a binding expression i.e. value="#{sessionScope.TriggerDate}" - this actually sets the value appropriately when the jspx is rendered but, when I go to create I get a NPE and I can't debug. I assumed that it might be a Date type issue - it would appear that CalendarListener provides a date of type java.util.Date and that the StartDate attribute of my VO/EO/table is a DATE and therefore requires oracle.jbo.domain.Date so I tried casting it - to no effect
    2. Using a Groovy expression *(StartDate==null?adf.context.sessionScope.TriggerDate:StartDate)* in my calendar's EventVO to default the Start Date to the same result
    Any thoughts or ideas?

    John,
    Thanks for that suggestion - could not get it to work. However, I did manage a different approach. I finally determined the sequence of events in terms of how the various events and listeners fire (I think).
    Basically, the CalendarActivityListener fires, followed by the listener associated with the Calendar object's Create facet, followed finally by the CalendarEventListener - the final is where the TriggerEvent is available and then finally, control is passed to the popup/dialog in the Create facet. So, my approach of trying to set/get the TriggerDate in the user's HTTP session was doomed to failure because it was being get before it had been set :(
    Anyway, I ended up adding a bit of code to the CalendarEvent listener - it grabs the current BindingContext, navigates through the DCBindingContainer to derive an Iterator for the ViewObject which drives the calendar and then grabs the currently active row. I then do a few tests to make sure we're working with a "new" row because I don't want to alter start & end dates associated with an existing calendar entry and then I define the Start and End dates to be the Trigger Date.
    Works just fine. Snippet from the listener follows
    BindingContext bindingContext = BindingContext.getCurrent();+
    *if ( bindingContext != null )    {*+
    DCBindingContainer dcBindings = (DCBindingContainer) bindingContext.getCurrentBindingsEntry();+
    DCIteratorBinding iterator = dcBindings.findIteratorBinding("EventsView1Iterator");+
    Row currentRow = iterator.getCurrentRow();+
    if ( currentRow.getAttribute("StartDate") == null)+
    currentRow.setAttribute("StartDate", calendarEvent.getTriggerDate());+
    if (currentRow.getAttribute("EndDate")==null)+
    currentRow.setAttribute("EndDate", calendarEvent.getTriggerDate());+
    *}*

  • New presentation based on a template

    Suppose there is a file SampleTemplate.potx. An user can right click on the file and select Edit. This opens the template so the user can edit the template. An user can double click or right click and select New. This creates a new presentation
    named Presentation1 which has all the same slides, master slides, handout, slides, etc. I want to do the same Operation via code.
    Presentations.Open(pathToTemplate) opens the template in order to edit it. Presentations.Add() creates a new empty presentation. There is no API to create a new presentation based on a template.
    I have tried following:
    var p = Globals.ThisAddIn.Application.Presentations.Add();
    p.ApplyTheme(path);
    p.Slides.InsertFromFile(path, 0);
    But this is not the same experience when the user double clicks on the potx file. No sections are present in the new presentation, the handout master is not the same like in the template, and maybe most of the other things of the template are not present
    in the new presentation.
    Is there really no way to create a new presentation based on a template?
    Regards,
    Yavuz

    Hi Lan,
    Thank You for your response. But this has the same effect as the code which I have pasted. Whether I use ApplyTheme(string) or ApplyTemplate(string) it is not working the same way as PowerPoint itself handles the creation of the new presentation.
    I can't upload a file. But let me explain how my SampleTemplate.potx looks like:
    In the notes master view I have changed the text of the footer to "Sample Template - Notes"
    In the handout master view I have changed the text of the footer to "Sample Template - Handout"
    In the slide master view I have changed the text of the footer in the top slide master (the biggest thumbnail) to "Sample Template - Slide Master Light", selected the theme called "Facet", and renamed the master to "Light".
    Then I inserted a second slide master. Changed the text of the footer in the top slide master (the biggest thumbnail) to "Sample Template - Slide Master Dark", selected the theme called "Facet", selected "Style 3" as the Background
    style, and renamed the master to "Dark".
    In the normal slides view I inserted 4 sections called "Part I", "Part II", "Part III", and "Part IV". Each of the sections contain two slides. For the first 4 slides I have chosen a layout from the Light master,
    and the last 4 slides have applied layouts from the Dark master.
    Double-clicking on SampleTemplate.potx creates a new presentation Presentation1 with the same template as in SampleTemplate.potx. All (really all) of the customizations mentioned above are present in the new presentation Presentation1.
    It does not matter whether I use p.ApplyTheme(pathToTemplate); p.Slides.InsertFromFile(pathToTemplate, 0) or p.ApplyTemplate(pathToTemplate); p.Slides.InsertFromFile(pathToTemplate, 0). The end result is the same for both aproaches.
    For both approaches I can observe following in the new presentation:
    No footer customization in the notes master view
    No footer customization in the handout master view
    Partial customizations in the slide master view. Both master slides are present, both has the same theme and background style, and both are named as in the SampleTemplate.potx. Only the second master (Dark) has the footer customization applied, the first
    master (Light) doesn't.
    In the slides view all 8 slides have the layouts from the master Light applied. Slides 5-8 should have applied the layouts from the slide master Dark. And also the 4 sections "Part I" to "Part IV" are not present in the new presentation.
    So the code way does not lead the same end result as PowerPoint way.
    By the way: I am testing with PowerPoint 2013.

  • [Swing ADF] add a new row based on existing one

    Hi all,
    I start with ADF and here is my problem:
    In a swing ADF application, I'd like to allow user to create new records based on a record already present in the DB. The user selects a record in the data table and then push a button that fill in some JTextField. He can then change whatever he wants. These JTextField are in fact arguments of a method of my Application Module. Then, when a button "add", that is created by drag and drop the method, is pushed, the method of the AM is called.
    The problem is: argument are null. This occure when I fill in the gap (JTextField) programmatically (by getting the currentRow of the iterator of the table). But if the user fill in the gap himself, then arguments are not null.
    Is there someone to help me?
    Thanks a lot!
    Regards

    Hi,
    I created the method, dragged the arguments as textFields and added the method call as a button.
    I then dragged and dropped teh Departments ViewObject as a table and created a button with the following action code
    private void jButton2_actionPerformed(ActionEvent e) {
    DCIteratorBinding dciter = (DCIteratorBinding) panelBinding.get("DepartmentsView1Iterator");
    Number deptId = (Number) dciter.getCurrentRow().getAttribute("DepartmentId");
    String dname = (String) dciter.getCurrentRow().getAttribute("DepartmentName");
    Number locId = (Number) dciter.getCurrentRow().getAttribute("LocationId");
    ((JUTextFieldBinding) panelBinding.get("deptId")).setInputValue(deptId);
    ((JUTextFieldBinding) panelBinding.get("dname")).setInputValue(dname);
    ((JUTextFieldBinding) panelBinding.get("locationId")).setInputValue(locId);
    panelBinding.refresh();
    Pressing the button copies the values to the input arguments and pressing the method button sends the values to the method

  • Insert new rows based on user selection on a table display on the screen

    Hi..
    In my requirement i need to display the line items of a PO# to the user on the screen for specific fields. Each row should also include an additonal checkbox when displayed for the user. When the user checks this check box or clicks on it a new row should be inserted below to that row with the existing data of that row being copied to newly inserted row and allowing the user to make any changes.
    The newly inserted row should also include a check box , so that when the user checks it again a new row should get inserted. Finally what ever data user enters on the screen, i should be able to update my internal table with those new values and records.
    Appreciate if anyone can guide me on how to proceed on this or any alternative approaches.
    Will reward helpful answers.
    Thanks.

    Hi ..
    Can you please be more detailed. First I need to know how to create the initial table display for the existing line items and then the techniques for inserting the new rows based on the check marks and finally add those news rows to my existing internal table..
    Appreciate ur help.
    Thanks.

  • CSS styles disappear in new template-based pages

    hello: having some trouble. i've created a template for a new website and everything looks ok, but when i attempt to create a new page based on the template, all the css styles i've created disappear. i have a hunch it has something to do with the "body" stlye overriding everything else.
    any suggestions are much appreciated.

    The first suggestion I would have is to make sure the css that is being linked is not in an editable region on the template.  Next, make sure the paths are correct.  If both are in order you may need to post the template code.

  • When to use the new file based content repository

    In Service Pack 4 there's a new implementation of the CMSPI interfaces which is configured by using the following implementation class:
    com.bea.content.spi.internal.FileSystemRepositoryImpl
    When should one use this new file based repository versus the existing one (configured by using the following class: com.bea.content.spi.internal.RepositoryImpl).
    I've read the edocs, but it doesn't state when to use this new one compared to the previous implementation.
    We consider using a third party content repository, but for the time being we will use the content repository provided by BEA.

    use the new keyword when you don't have an instance of that object in memory that you want to use.  For example...
    if you have an object already in memory that is holding a property with a "CamelQuery" object, then you can say
    var query = myobject.Query;
    however, if you have to write the query, or instantiate the object from nothing, then you need to use the "new" keyword.  A good example is SPSite object...
    if you can get a new SPSite object by either "newing one up and passing the URL" or getting the farm and getting a site from that object.
    using(SPSite site = new SPSite("url to my site"))
    now I can use site.
    //or
    SPSite = myWebApp.Sites[0];
    // this gives you site at index 0 of current webApp
    most of the time in SharePOint you will be using the "new" keyword to open site collections, and then getting your subsites from there. BE CAREFUL using the "new" keyword. If you "new" up an object that is iDisposable... you
    MUST dispose of that, but if you use that same object but it comes from the "current context", you mustn't dispose of it.
    //dispose of this by using statement
    using(SPSite site = new SPSite(<url>))
    //do stuff
    //after this bracket it is disposed.
    //do not dispose of this:
    SPSite mysite = SPContext.Current.Site;
    //unpredictable behavior can occur because you will still need references to your current site.

    I have registered a credit card for purchasing apps from the app store. My bank has issued a new chip based card and now the 16 digit numbers have changed. How do I register the new card for flowless purchases?

    Go to Apple Menu > App Store > View my account > sign in and then edit the payment details with the new card details.
    I am assuming that your card and supporting bank are in the same country as your residential (billing) address and that you are using the App Store of that country.
