SHORT FILM audio advice please

Forum,
I'm making a short film that includes a few scenes with a radio announcer. What is the best way to make it sound as if the voice is coming from the radio?
Is there some sort of filter I can use or something? Or should I just put my actor's voice on a CD and then record the voice again while playing through a CD player?
Thanks in advance for any tips,
treyvon

Do not rule out the "record to cd" route. Not only will you get a more authentic radio sound but you will also get the room acoustic that the radio is in. This will help the radio sound right with the action - make it sound like its in the same room as the action. It can often end up being the simplest and quickest route. Its all too easy to opt for the post production route and end up sitting in the edit suite (dub room?) for hours trying to make such things sound right.
This sort of stuff falls into the sound design/foley category really, and the pros go to great lengths to get this stuff right - its certainly not unheard of for them to go back to original locations to record sound effects such as foot steps etc. Its not all done in gravel boxes and foley rooms (though admittedly, a lot is!)

  • A good audio level range for export to DVD (for a short film)

    Hello,
This question was a bit hard to search for... what is the recommended audio range to keep my project within if I am making a short film which I plan to export to DVD.
As of now, a lot of my audio stays between -30 and -18, even if I turn it up all the way in each clip.  Is it a problem if I add the "Boost" effect to every single audio clip I have?  Or is there a quicker way to turn up the audio (Master volume is already at 100%)
    Thanks!

I shoot for about -6dB, with no peaks above 0dB.
Sounds like you have a very weak signal. I'd set away from PrPro and handle this in SB, or Audition. Listen carefully with a good pair of noise-canceling headphones first, and then test on monitors.
Are you working in mono, stereo or 5.1 SS?
    Good luck,

  • How to export a short  film made with still images without loosing quality?

    Hi,
I have been trying everything to make a short film, which is made with still images, to look decent once exported however it is a real challenge. Here are the steps I have undertaken:
1- I prepare the photographs and give them the aspect ration of 720p and whatever height as I try not to crop them too much at 300dpi. They look great in photoshop or capture one. I then save them as.tiff. All the images are RGB.
2- I start a new project in premiere pro cs4 and make it DV Pal 25fps.
3-I import the images and place them on the timeline. If they are a bit too big I rescale them. The images seem to look ok on the timeline although I seem to have lost the deepness of the colours.
    4-I render the work area
5-I export it as quicktime, dv pal, quality 100.
My dilemna is that although exporting with quicktime, dv pal, quality 100 seems to give me the best quality compared to using quicktime animation, mpeg2, cinemak, avi..., the images are still not as sharp as in Photoshop and the colours look a lot paler and washed out. Also, when looking close to the screens you can see tiny squares on the images although from distance it's not too bad. When I view it from the exported file using Nero it's not too bad although definitely not perfect, as soon as I try to make a DVD and import it in Adobe Encore CS4 or send it by Dynamic Link, the quality looks horrible with images that look soft if not blurred and completely washed out.
I have now tried about t bu15 versions to see what 's the best I still have not reached the optimum quality and since these will be shown on big tvs or projected onto screens I need to nail it.
Would anybody have any advice please please please?
    Many Thanks

My overall advice is to do that kind of work in an application that is designed for that.  Give Photodex Proshow Producer trial a crack at it.  I do a lot of work with stills, and that IMO PSP is the best approach.  If you are intermixing the odd still, Pr may get you by.  If you plan on doing a lot of that, try proshow, where the workflow and extensive features are designed for making high quality videos from stills that can be output to a wide number of formats and destinations, including color management with many of them( including avi).  And, no need to resize.  I know this won't solve your present problem.
Obviously, your attempt in Pr has not worked out as you had hoped. Maybe a bit more info would help. How are you rescaling them in Pr? That might well account for some quality loss. What is the original format and size of the images? What color management are you using in PS? Are you using any color correction or effects in Pr? Is your project interlaced or progressive?
From your description,  you are not even getting the quality you should be getting from Pr IMO, though as Jim says, it is video and it will never look as pristine as it does in PS, but it still seems to me that something you are doing has degraded the work more than normally would be expected.

  • Short film made with Flash Trace Bitmap

Hello, I've made a short film called "Daylight Saving Time" that uses Trace Bitmap in Flash to give the film a distinctive look.
    Check it out here:

My background is in web and multimedia development - since Flash 1.0 (actually since FutureSplash!) - but I'm also a filmmaker so this was a good way of combining them both.
Please watch and if you like it share it & send it on. Any questions about the work flow just post and I'll be happy to reply.

  • Is there any way to browse all sales excluding rental only & short films?

Is there any way to browse all film sales excluding rental only & short films?
I am finding the laborious process of clicking through page by page in cover view annoying to the extreme to search new additions to the available film sales lists every week or so. The display page is always slightly deeper than my window so it means having to scroll down to view the last row of covers and click next page.
Apple... Is there any chance of having an auto scrolling (with pause and previous/next feature) film cover flow with description view of each film large enough to view the image, preferably filling the screen, perhaps also a feature in Front Row that will show available films to buy/rent in iTunes or an RSS screen saver that could give you a constant update of the last 10/20 films added?
Something that will make the task of searching for titles you might like to buy less of a 'task' and more intuitive. I don't really want to browse by Genre and a Cover image only view tells you nothing about the film.
If the screen in front of me gave me a constantly (controllable when required) changing view, similar to the content displayed in Front Row of a title you have selected i'd be happy.

  • New System Build feedback/advice, please...

Time to build a new WorkStation. My motivation for upgrading is that I have been using a mediocore laptop (i7m, 8gb, 250gb ) from my work as my home system for the last 2 years, I am starting to get more freelance coming in and need a good desktop.
I am not so sure about my processor, mother board and video card choice. I am more interested in app usability than absolute throughput and want to maximise my dollar investment.
    Purchase date: this week
Budget:  I'd like to stay close to $1000-1300, but can spend more for significant performance gains. As I do more  research, my inclinations are trending higher.
System Usage: My primary uses will include photo editing with Lightroom and Photoshop, 3D graphics using 3D studio Max, Maya and Mud Box, HD video editing using Premiere and After Affects and  Web Design. I will also use it as an HD media player and hifi audio is important. Maximizing cs6 performance in premiere & pShop is my main target. I am focused mainly on user experience while running these apps. If I need to encode hrs of video or crank out frames in max/maya, I can do it at work. I seldom run games.
Monitors: I'm running two Dell U2410's IPS, calibrated w\Color Munki, one portrait one lanscape.
Parts to Upgrade: Full system build
    O/S : Win7 Ultimate, I might play with Ubuntu/Virtualization
Vendor: Newegg unless I can save big $$ else where. I like B&H.
It needs to be an Intel machine & I have chosen lga 2011 becuase I'll eventually go to 64gb. I'll do some modest overclocking.
Any advice is appreciated. Thank you for your expertise.

Do you have any feeling about how much I'll gain by going to the 6 core cpu over the 4 core? Remember, for me usability in the cs6 apps is more important than marginal gains in throughput.

I have picked the MSI motherboard due to its support for 128gb ram, superior audio and other high end features. The AS Rock for its rep for solid value/performance. Opinions?
Finally, I would like some advice on video cards. I prefer nVidia to ATI, but I'm not sure which chip to go for. The six fifties are cheaper, but the 660 ti provides more CUDA cores.

    Alex,
I sure wish you would quick picking fights with lots of knowledgeable people just trying to help people build good PCs for running Adobe Premiere. (I am stating that based on not just this thread, but rather the strong challenges you seem to bring to about half of the threads that you've chosen to participate in).
I was the original poster to suggest that Neal select a larger case. Next Harm agreed and cited 6 points which I would agree with regarding why a larger box is better for a video editing rig.
What are the typical goals for someone wanting a video editing PC? I would expect that most users want:
    - robust, runs and never fails
    - has incredible power; face it, video editing with AVCHD is one of the most taxing applications a PC can face today
    - quiet; who wants to be doing creative work with any server room like wind noise
Now let me be specific where you are simply WRONG WRONG WRONG:
You stated: "Back pressure increases in larger spaces due to natural impedance of airflow (much like with electricity traveling over distance)"
Fact: Exactly the opposite; Back pressure decreases in larger spaces due to more room for the air to flow (much like thicker copper passes electricity with less resistance than a thin wire)
Your stated: "Open non-compartmentalized spaces are a recipe for hot spots - areas of turbulence with higher temperatures." and then cited a server room article talking about cooling air taking the path of least resistance -- going under the floor in a server room, instead of through rack mounted servers.
Fact: Lots of open space for large, slow moving fans to keep a video editing box cool is a great way to go
You stated: "Full towers - in themselves - are worse for cooling"
Fact: That is one crazy indefensible statement!
I seriously doubt that you fully comprehend the differences and importance of thermal conductivity, heat capacity, conduction, convection, and radiation for you to make the statements that you have so far and these are the staples for discussing how heat transfer takes place.
Note to other readers... There are lots of ways to cool components including cpus, hard drives, gpus and memory. I suspect that the noise levels brought by servers and some gamers would be totally offensive to the ambient noise level that you want in the room with you for video editing. Therefore we are left with just a few quiet alternatives: 1) lots of volume at low velocity (large cases, large fans, slow rpm), 2) liquid cooling, and 3) Cases with doors or baffles to keep the sound from a noisier solution from getting back to your ears.
    Regards,
    Jim

  • My Z2 tablet has yellow lines appearing on screen edges. Advice please?

My tablet developed a yellow line down the left hand side of the screen fairly early on. This was shortly followed by another line along the bottom, and now one on the right. Advice please?

Definitely a hardware fault, you should have no problem getting the tablet replaced, or repaired otherwise.

See my reply in the other thread. Please don't double post as it is confusing to give answers. Unfortunately your picture doesn't show any helpful information to give us a clue as to what the problem is. A more helpful image would be of the same view but with the Input/output selection shown (rather than the fx view) by clicking on the double arrow icon to the left of the fx one which is selected at present.

  • My short films have disappeared! How can I get them back?

After syncing my ipad, all of my short films disappeared! I looked through my purchases and everything i could think of...... Please help?

Unfortunately, this is exactly what is supposed to happen. Tones are not part of the Cloud, it is your responsibility to back them up.
If you are lucky, they may get regranted or something, depending on age etc. Try iTS and see what happens.

  • Opinion about short film and help on CG used

    Hello all!
Not sure this is the correct place to post this. If I'm in the wrong location, please place this post in the correct location.
    Forgive my bad english, ok?
Guys, I know there are many artists here in this forum, so I would ask for help for artists.
I posted a short film yesterday and for lack of time and knowledge of CG, my short film was amateur, I know.
I would ask a help to the artists here and ask how I could improve the effects of this short film?
What would you do to improve, what features would you use the AE to enhance the film?
    I filmed with a 5D mark 2 and mark 3.
I used the AE and Premier.
I'm sure your comments will help me produce something better next time.
It may be a tip, an article, plugins name, names of AE filters, finally, it will help the whole community, I'll put your name of credits as a thank you.
Thank you, I'm sure that everyone at least help with a tip, it will be of great value.
    Short Film - http://www.epicfilmes.com/cinema/salmo-23-4

The only effect that I saw that looked a little cheesy was the glowing eyes at the end of the film. It was a little too intense and could have use a little more finesse and some better tracking.
The film in general suffers from pacing problems. This is the hardest thing for an editor to learn. It needs to be tightened up so you just show enough to tell the story. I worked on a feature once that spent 6 days on location filming with a crew of more than 50 and a cast of 10. When the final film was released there were only about 4 shots from 6 days of filming final cut because all of that other material didn't contribute to the telling of the final story.
Keep the effects subtle. Move the camera closer to your actors and use wider lenses. Don't move the camera unless the movement emphasizes a plot point. Keep up the good work.

  • Zombie Short Film Shot on Eos Rebel T2i

Hello everyone. We have decided to shoot a pre-trailer to a zombie short film we are in production for. This was shot on the Eos Rebel T2i with its standard lens, and a 50mm lens. I am proud to say I own one of these amazing cameras.
We were inspired to create our own short film inspired by the Walking Dead. In this new generation, a young leader by the name of Clarissa is left to lead the group of teenagers her age as well as others that fall into their lives. The group encounter enemies that are not just the dead. The Apocalypse has revolved around everyone, no matter of the age. The group faces new threats, the wisdom of the leader is question and a new unimaginable circumstance falls into play. We introduce our creation of the Hybrid, who is half human and half Carrier, otherwise known as a zombie. Could he be more than just a Hybrid? Or could there be more to the endurance of his life and why he lives being both? Stay tuned and find out!
Although the short film may still be in production, we have created a pre-trailer to give you the style of the film
If you like what you see, please like, and share us on Facebook

If you wish to see this short Film made, please vote for us at the International Movie Trailer Festival

Really awesome short video. You should promote your videos.
If you want to do promotion of your short videos then you should post your vidoes on social networking sites and post or add your videos on websites such as movie25.ws, solarmovie etc etc.

  • Independent Short Film Editing Solutions?

    Hello,
I'm going to be shooting a 23 minute short film and was looking for input on the most desirable and economic solution for post production. Here's the basic specs:
Shooting HDCAM 23.98 sync sound 48 kHz... (prod. audio on camera masters)
Finishing D5 24p fully mixed (perhaps even a 5.1 mix)
The tired and true way I'd do it is down-convert to DVCAM and edit in 29.97 NDF NTSC. I'd then spit out an EDL and online off the HDCAM masters at a post facility. Then I'd color correct and do visual FX (there are some green screens and possible 3D fx I'd have to do) at said post facility and layback final pic to D5.
On the audio side, I'd do an OMF export of the audio and give it to the audio facility for further editorial and a mix.
I'm hoping to get some post facility help for free, so I don't have to completely avoid going there. It's more important that the film look and sound great on a big screen than the novelty of having done it all myself...
That being said, I know Apple has made great strides in handling HD... should I rent an HDCAM deck? Can I edit HDCAM 23.98p material on FCP 5? (Or just 1080i?) If I'm doing multi layered FX, can the G5 REALLY handle HD material? And does having to rent an HDCAM deck for digitizing defeat the point of saving money by doing it all yourself? Aren't they mega expensive???
Thoughts? Besides "good luck with that..."??
Many thanks in advance for anyone who wants to take a stab at it.

can the G5 REALLY handle HD material?
Yes it can. But not cheaply.
What you need for this is an HD capture card (Decklink HD or Kona 2 or Kona LH), High speed drives, like external SATA or fibrechannel Raid array. Then you'll have to rent a deck for a few days to capture the material, and, if you feel comfortable in your color correcting ability (I'd suggest letting another do this) then rent it AND an HD monitor for a couple more days to finish the show.
A good workflow, if you only want to deal with the creative cutting, is to shoot HDCAM, transfer to DVCAM (slaving TC) and edit. Then bring the project file...no EDL, the actual project file...to a post facility that has an FCP finishing system. In L.A. I can name 4 places that do this....there are many many more. Not sure what the rental cost of an HDCAM is, but it might be between $500 adn $1000 a day.
    Your OMF workflow is correct.

  • Help with merged clip decision for a short film

Greetings and thanks in advance for any perspective you can offer.
I've begun to edit a short film (10 minutes) that has 3 hours of dailies.  The clips are all merged clips, created with dual system audio and synced with Plural Eyes 3.
However, before setting to what's sure to be months of work, I wonder if there was a better workflow.  Bear with me.  To begin with, marker comments do not stick with merged clips.  As soon as you select another clip - poof!  They're gone.  And there are other limitations that may or may not affect me down the road.  I guess I'm saying I'm not completely sure what I might want or need to do at some point, but I'm concerned that I'll be limited for using merged clips.
I've realized I can use Plural Eyes to merge my clips and audio fully outside of Premiere CC.  Those clips, once imported, retain marker comments and suffer no other "unique" limitations.
It will be a massive undertaking to resync, re-import, and retag and organize everything - but perhaps in the long haul this is prudent?  Or not?
I'm cutting with Prores 422 at full size 4K, so replacing media isn't a concern.  Anything else I should be worried about?  There's always a chance I'll use a 3rd party to color-correct with a DaVinci.
    Thanks again.

I shoot for about -6dB, with no peaks above 0dB.
Sounds like you have a very weak signal. I'd set away from PrPro and handle this in SB, or Audition. Listen carefully with a good pair of noise-canceling headphones first, and then test on monitors.

  • Music for short film question...

So I'm editing my first, and bad, short film. I'm wondering what's the best way to go about music, obtaining and dropping music tracks in? How does one go about putting, lets say, Mozart under some video? Thanks, I know this is a noob question but I'm still getting used to it!

I keep a folder on my hard drive that is just filled with music of different types that I import from music CDs: classics, rock, pop, etc. It all comes in handy for background music in one kind of video or another, and gives me lots of choices and raw material. In fact, as Hollywood knows, the background music can make or break the video. Can you imagine all the tear-jerker scenes in the Titanic without the theme music, or the Ken Burns special on the Civil War without that special theme song he used? It's the music that sets the mood.
Like the other guys said, use some program such as iTunes, SoundStudio, or QuickTime Player Pro to convert whatever comes off your music CDs into AIFF form (although I've found FCE will try to work with just about any kind of audio file, and usually can), and then just drag and drop the music file's icon into your Final Cut Express browser (remembering that what gets dropped into FCE is only a pointer back to the original audio file). Once it's in the Browser, you can double-click it into the Viewer, and there in the Viewer window listen to it and set IN and OUT points (with the I and O keys on the keyboard) to make the length of the audio clip approximately match the length of the video clip you want to put it under, and also to choose the most appropriate part of the music or song to fit the video. You can always override these IN and OUT points on the timeline, of course, just by dragging the edges of the audio clip left or right to make it longer or shorter, or slipping it around with FCE's tools, but setting the IN and OUT points in the viewer like that before you drag the audio clip down to the audio tracks from the Browser gives you a rough starting point. If you just drag the entire audio file down onto the timeline immediately, without such adjustments, you can get an awful long audio clip stretched way down your Timeline (and it might also accidentally run over, and move, or obliterate, some other clips on that audio track way downstream). Then you must whittle that overly long audio clip down with the razor blade or other editing tool to match the video clip above it, although I did it that way before learning that it's better to do it in the Viewer window.
Once the audio clip is in the timeline, use the pen tool on the red audio volume line running down the length of it, to adjust overall volume, and to raise and lower the volume at specific points in the video clip, and to fade it in and out at the beginning, end, and elsewhere as needed. To do this, just click on the red line with the pen tool to establish control points (keyframes) so you can pull the volume line up and down. Setting the audio clips to show the waveforms of the music while you do this can help with the precision of these adjustments.
Yeah, music is so important to the mood of a video that I'm amazed so many people neglect it, or choose the wrong music (see YouTube for just how bad it can get). Some time spent experimenting to get the right music, and the most effective use of it, really pays off. I've had tears running down peoples' eyes (OK, my own too sometimes) watching some of my sentimental family videos with the right music behind it.
Same goes for comedy: check out this video comedy I created in FCE and uploaded to YouTube, and see how the music absolutely makes the main scene, and how you can match the beat of the music to the action in the video. It takes time, sliding the video clips around to match the beat, but it pays off--I've seen people fall out of their chairs laughing while watching this one: <http://tinyurl.com/6xdymg>

  • Best Way To Export My Short Film... HELP!

    Hey everyone,
I've got a 27min long short film that I shot on a Canon HV20 (in 24p HD 16:9 W/S) and I have been playing around with exporting as a Quicktime Movie but nothing seems to be working out too well! Just using standard settings gives me these HORRIBLE lines everytime the camera moves and defeats the purpose of shooting in 24p. Is there any video settings that anyone prefers out there?
Also, I need a version to upload to Youtube. Is there anyway I can get a 27min long film into 100mb without completely loosing my quality?
    Thanks again.

    Goat,
    Details please.
Exact format of your footage - is this AVCHD? or HDV?
How did you capture - AVCHD can only be captured as PRoRes or AIC if I remember correctly
    What are your sequence settings?
    How are you monitoring this?
Describe "Horrible" lines, horizontal, vertical, wavy?
everytime the camera moves and defeats the purpose of shooting in 24p
This could be a direct result of shooting in 24p. In 24p camera moves must be slow a deliberate or you will get some jittering. This could be translated into lines depending on what format you shot in.
As far as youtube is concerned I think that they have a 10 minute limit.
    K
