Should I go back to iMovie 6?

Since I have upgraded to the latest MacBook Pro with iMovie '08, I have had hours - no WEEKS - of frustration trying to edit one 50 minute video taken on a Sony Handycam. It plays perfectly on my Mac Book but after burning it runs jerkily. I notice that there are quite a few posts on the forum with the same problem.
On my old PowerBook and iMovie 6, there were no problems at all and all the videos I burned, including some old cine footage, burned beautifully. I thought my new computer would be much easier to use and I am very disappointed indeed. The only way I could get a half-way decent DVD was to encode the movie using Garageband which I suppose turned it into a Quicktime movie. Why oh why do Apple make it all so difficult?!

iMovie 6 => iDvd'08 offers custom chapter markers whereas iM7 has interval or incremental chapter markers (it edits for you, to which many of us say ...no thanx).
btw .... most users may not realize this, but this feature was already present within iLife 6. But frankly I rarely used it....

  • How do I move a project from an external drive back into Imovie

I recently bought an Iomega external hard drive to store documentary movies so that I wouldn't jam up my Imac's free space. However, after I moved an imovie/idvd project to it, and wanted to make changes, I could not move the project back into the Imac's drive. (It also would not burn from the external, giving me a multiplex error) When I tried to move the movie back into Imovie on the Imac it said Quicktime couldn't parse it. I saw various posts about parsing, but not about specifically about moving a project from an external drive. Can anyone offer any suggestions? It seems to me that I should be able to move a project back and forth without that much trouble.

Sounds like you have a DVD format (MPEG-2) and not an iMovie Project file.
The key phrases are "multiplex" and "parse". Both suggest MPEG-2 format when opened in QuickTime. It would also throw an error -2048 message if MPEG-2.
But another issue could be the file format of the external drive. Most ship pre-formatted for the Windows OS's but a Mac user should format using HFS+ (and others). If you didn't format the drive before moving the large iMovie Project onto it it may have become severely fragmented if the external used FAT 16 or FAT 32 (very common) formats. They have a 2 or 4 GB file size limit, respectively and would have made your Project unreadable when moved back and forth.
Use the Disk Utility app to find out the format of your external drive.

You really should be doing backups with an actual backup application, especially one that will work automatically, and, if your external HD is large enough, back up your entire system.  These can automatically back up only what's changed since the  previous backup, and some will keep "archive" copies of things you've changed or deleted, also.
Too many things can go wrong, such as your internal HD failing, and you'll have a major project to reinstall everything.
You already have Time Machine, built-in to OSX.  You might want to review the Time Machine Tutorial, and perhaps browse Time Machine - Frequently Asked Questions.
#27 in the second link mentions some alternatives, too.

  • Is there a way to go move a project from IDVD back to IMOVIE?

This is clearly a newbie question:
I know how to share from Imovie to IDVD and I made my IDVD project, but now I don't know if I still have the IMovie I originally transferred.
Is there a way to move a project from IDVD back to IMOVIE?

First, go back to iMovie and look under both iMovie Events and Projects to see if you still have the movie. Double check by looking in Finder to where you save the movies you create. For instance, if you save to Movies, there should be folders in there for iMovie Events and iMovie Projects. If they are there, you should see them in the lists in iMovie.
If not, I don't think there is a way you can move it directly back to iMovie. Is there a real need to have it in iMovie? Unless you are going to change the movie, there is not a need to keep it there. If, for some reason you want it there, however, you can go thru the process of copying the DVD back to the hard drive using MPEG Streamclip, and exporting it to Quicktime. Then open iMovie, and bring it back into iMovie.

  • How to put movie from disc back into imovie?

Hi, I have just put a disc that I created using iMovie and iDVD back into my G4 using Disc Utility. Seems easy to burn an exact copy, but I would like to get the movie on the disc back into iMovie so I can edit it further and make it part of a new iDVD project. Is this possible?
    Thanks
    Chris

    Hi, Christine,
Yes, you can do it. See this for some help/suggestions as to what to use and how to do it: http://discussions.info.apple.com/webx?128@@.68b7d7a6
You will lose some quality but it may not be so much to bother you.
You should always save your finished movies back to the camcorder DV tape. That way, you can always reimport that footage into any new iMovie project.
Either way, you will not be able to do the tight editing as you could on the original iMovie, but you can certainly add it to other movies, insert new movies, and delete some portions of your first movie. Remember that the audio you added as separate tracks will now be incorporated into the video and will not appear as separate tracks under the video.
    Hope this is helpful!

  • I have no Internet connection(via ethernet or wifi) since I upgrade it to Yosemite.what is wrong?should I go back to Mavericks?

    Hello!
I have a Mac mini and I just installed the Yosemite upgrade system and since then I can't connect to the internet anymore. I was using my computer also as a router for my home, abd after the upgrade my computer can't connect to the internet. It appears as it is connected to ethernet but no page can be load, and it appears the message that: this page cannot be displayed as the computer is offline. Why?? what means is offline?? And I also put the internet cable to my laptop and I share the internet, to see if it sees the wifi and the mac mini connected to the wifi but still can't connect to the internet, showing the same message as above.
So far I didn't see other problems with the new upgrads, I like the new look, but I believe is moving a bit slower and it takes too much to launch after I restart it.
My question is should I go back to Mavericks or anyone can help me with my problem?? I did reinstall 2 times the system
already and I check in disk utility couple of times...same problem, no Internet...or better say, "my computer is offline", as it says in safari window.
I really need help pleeeeeeease as I work from home and all my work is on that Mac Mini!!! And I need to downgrade to Mavericks can u please tell me how
    to?!!
    Thank you very much!

    Hi,
You need to sign in when using Photoshop Elements 12 as it is the method of activation. If you sign out it deactivates that installation.
If you are having problems, see if the following helps.
Sign in, activation, or connection errors | CS5.5 and later

  • Difficulty scanning slides on my Epson V600  running Lion, Adobe Photoshop CS6,  and can no longer use the Epson scan application or the plug in for Photoshop. Should I revert back to leopard in my time machine to finish scanning my family slides?

I am running Lion 10.7.5, Adobe Photoshop CS6, scanning slides on my Epson V600 and can no longer use the scan application or the plug in for Photoshop. Should I revert back to leopard in my time machine to finish scanning my family slides?
In 10.7 there is not a twain that works with Photoshop for importing with all the options needed to scan transparencies. I noticed that when I was scanning in October 2012 I was still using CS6 so somehow I was managing to be able to use all the scan features.
They sell 2nd party software (VieScan and Silverscript)which I found to be just mimially OK and very hard to use.
I just want to scan like I used to.
Can I use time machine to go back to an earlier operating sysytem LEOPARD,  and then do my scans and then save the photos and them go back to the LION system?
I spent 7 hours trying crazy solutions - downloading Windows CS2 Photoshop and then using a program so I could run it on the apple. Then I couldn't figure out how to put a plug in for the scanner in the stupid windows Photoshop program. Googgling the computer like a mad woman trying to ask questions. I am not giving up...
    Please help if you can...
    Thanks...

I assume you've tried using Image Capture. Give VueScan a try.

If I back up iMovie projects to an external drive does imovie  take the media with it? I want to free up space and remove pictures that were in iPhoto...that were used as media by iMovie when project was under way. In short I want archive iMovie stuff. If I pull pics out of iPhoto, and later want to drag an archived projet bac into iMovie and the pics are no longer in iPhoto, will I be able to keep working in the project in iMovie?

Very likely not, as the iPhoto's can be used for something else.
More like it took a copy, or it's referencing that spot on the drive in the editable files and most likely made a copy to create a new permanent export file.
Sample one picture and a iMovie file and see what happens.

  • HT5262 How long should the icloud back up take?

How long should the iCloud back up take? I only have 4gb of storage but it has taken almost an hour already with approximately 2 hours remaining.

    Hi RMaskery14,
If you are concerned about the time your iCloud backup is taking, you may find the following article helpful:
My backup is taking a long time to finish.
Backing up and restoring takes time, especially if you have a lot of data or a slow connection. Depending on the size of your backup and the speed of your network, you may need more time than expected to complete the process. Using a reliable connection when backing up your device is highly recommended.

  • I'm thinking of using Final Cut Pro to straighten slightly crooked footage and then re-import back to iMovie to complete the video. Does this have any impact on image quality?

I'm thinking of using Final Cut Pro to straighten slightly crooked footage and then re-import back to iMovie to complete the video. Does this have any impact on image quality?

As your rotate the image, you will begin to see black edges. So, as Tom implies, the image must be scaled up to hide those voids. If you shot 4k ad are editing in a HD timeline, no problem, lots of room to spare. If you shot 1080 and are editing in a 1080 timeline, you will run into issues at a certain point. However, if your 1080 project is going to be transcoded to 720 or ye olde DVD you won't notice any deterioration at all.

  • I'm a bit confused. Since my original camera format was 720/60p, and I converted the footage to Pro Res422 in order to edit in Final Cut Pro 7, should I convert back to a higher quality format before sending the file to DVD Studio Pro?

I'm a bit confused. Since my original camera format was 720/60p, and I converted the footage to Pro Res422 in order to edit in Final Cut Pro 7, should I convert back to a higher quality format before sending the file to DVD Studio Pro? If so, which Compressor codec is best to use in order to preserve the original 720/60p?   How do I maintain the highest quality?

No...ProRes is a high quality format. Finishing format.  Many TV networks take that as a final deliverable.
BUT...DVDs aren't high definition...they are SD.  You cannot make a 720p60 DVD with DVD Studio Pro.  Any DVD you make will be SD...720x480.  The only HD DVD format out there is BluRay, and for that you need a BluRay burner.
As for making a high quality DVD...using the BEST QUALITY settings in Compressor will work:
#42 - Quick and dirty way to author a DVD
Shane's Stock Answer #42 - David Roth Weiss' Secret Quick and Dirty Way to Author a DVD:
The absolute simplest way to make a DVD using FCP and DVDSP is as follows:
    1. Export a QT movie, either a reference file or self contained using current settings.
    2. Open DVDSP, select the "graphical" tab and you will see two little monitors, one blue, one green.
    3. Select the left blue one and hit delete.
    4. Now, select the green one, right click on it and select the top option "first play".
    5. Now drag your QT from the browser and drop it on top of the green monitor.
    6. Now, for a DVD from an HD source, look to the right side and select the "general tab" in the track editor, and see the Display Mode, and select "16:9 pan-scan."
    7. Hit the little black and yellow burn icon at the top of the page and put a a DVD in when prompted. DVDSP will encode and burn your new DVD.
    THATS ALL!!!
NOW...if you want a GOOD LOOKING DVD, instead of taking your REF movie into DVD SP, instead take it into Compressor and choose the BEST QUALITY ENCODE (2 pass VBR) that matches your show timing.  Then take THAT result into DVD SP and follow the rest of the steps.  Except you can choose "16:9 LETTERBOX" instead of PAN & SCAN if you want to see the entire image.

This happens in JRE 1.6.0.11 + Microsoft VS2008 C++, on Windows Server 2003. Happens in a busy customer site once in every few days, cannot reporoduce in the lab.
    There are two relevant threads:
    * Thread A: Created in Java right after system start up. It makes some preparations and then calls C++ code via JNI. In the JNI, Java data types are converted to C++ data types by GetBooleanArrayElements() and GetStringUTFChars(). It remains in C++ forever (until shutdown) and calls back the Java code via JNI every few seconds (that is: the stack contains Java frames, then C++ frames, then from time to time more Java frames and even further C++ frames).
    * Thread B: Created upon need, invokes a C++ function via JNI, converts parameters by GetStringUTFChars() and at return by ReleaseStringUTFChars(). The function may take few milliseconds and up to few minutes to complete, eventually it returns to Java and the thread is deleted.
At time of crash we see the following:
    * Most of the threads in the system are in state threadblocked - we guess that the VM blocked them for GC.
    * Thread A is the active one. As far as we can tell it is in Java (called back from C++), maybe trying to invoke a C++ function via JNI. It locked and released a mutex ("synchronized") just before the crash (we suspect that while performing this lock its thread's Safepoint state may have changed to callback). The thread state is threadin_native_trans.
    * Thread B is blocked in the JNI trying to return to Java, maybe while invoking ReleaseStringUTFChars(). It's state is threadblocked.
Another important detail: the crash happens usually certain time (few seconds or even few minutes) after thread B is blocked, and always while thread A is in Java called back from C++. We guess that something caused the Safepoint locking to wait forever while thread B tried to returns to from C++ to Java, and that the activity of thread A make the Safepoint realize that there's a deadlock (so its activity it's not the root cause but a side-effect).
We always see two mutex / monitors with name UNKNOWN at time of error, and 100% "eden" memory utilization.

    Thanks for the advice.
Eventually (after few days of digging) we found that in certain case we're using the JNIEnv of one thread in the other thread. This leads to sporadic crashes. We managed to simulate the situation in the lab and ensure that fixing the JNIEnv mixture really makes the problem go away.

Is it possible that you have moved or renamed any of your Event clips through the Finder? If so, iMovie will not be able to find them. The solution is to move them back and change the name back to the original name.
Also, if the clips are on an external drive, make sure that drive is attached.
