Should I switch to Mac for CF/Flex/SQL development?

I'm contemplating a move to Mac for my local development
environment. I have seen quite a number of people using Mac for
CF/Flex/Flash development. Those are my primary programming
platforms - though I'm planning on adding AJAX and .NET to my
arsenal soon. I was wondering if anyone had any feedback on the
benefits and drawbacks of switching to Mac:
Do the IDEs (i.e. Flex Builder, Eclipse, Fireworks, etc.)
work well?
Are there any other important programs (i.e. Source Control,
Wireframing/Mockups) that will (or will not) work well?
What about database development? I'm used to SQL Server - can
it run on a Mac? If so, how well does it work?
Any other issues I should know about developing on a Mac?
I know this is very vague, but I'm looking for any
constructive feedback I can get, to help me make a wise decision.
Thanks.
Are there any other known issues with programming

I wouldn't switch if you want to do .NET / SQL Server
development. Most people on Macs who do SQL Server development
either use a remote server or run it in a Windows Virtual Machine.
Important programs are available for both OSes, but without
knowing which ones you use it's hard to say whether you just need
to install the "mac version" or whether you'd need to install a
brand new one.

  • Same icons for objects in SQL Developer as Data Modeler

    Hello,
would it be possible to display the same icons for objects in SQL Developer as Data Modeler?
    For example:
    - in SQLD a session temporary table has the icon of a table with an X symbol, in Data Modeler it is just a table icon.
    - in SQLD a materialized view has the icon of a table with 2 arrows, in data Modeler it is just a table icon.

    Hi Joop,
I think you will find that in Data Modeler's Physical Model tree the same icons are used for temporary Tables and Materialized Views as in SQL Developer.

  • Should I switch to Mac?   Considering the New Macbook pro 13"

    Hello,
I am not a mac user and am contemplating switching to mac as I am looking forward to get a new laptop.
I am considering getting a Macbook pro 13" the basic model but I also came across a Sony Vaio 'E' series laptop. The Sony has full HD screen, 500 GB, blu ray drive and an i3 processor. The rest of the specifications are similar to the mac.
Moreover the Sony with its better specifications is a bit cheaper than the mac.
I cannot decide on whether to switch to mac or just get the Sony Vaio.
Hope you guys can help me out in making a decision.
    Thank you.

    Zane.a,
Welcome to Apple Discussions. I won't go into the specifics of the Sony you are looking at because specifications mean very little, what is important is the experience of using a PC and the experience of using a Mac. Many PC users tend to get hung up on computer specifications, which CPU, RAM, Graphics Card, etc.. One thing you cannot do on a PC is run OS X where with a Mac you can run both OS X and MS Windows. In fact there are several excellent solutions (Fusion, Parallels & Bootcamp) for doing so. In addition Mac's tend to have better build quality and certainly have better resale value.
Apple has some sites I would recommend you look over. One is called:
    Switch 101
    and the other is
    Mac 101
These sites provide useful tips, information and videos.
While Windows 7 is a good OS however it still doesn't have the same experience as OS X. With Windows 7 you still have to worry about about malware including virus's and pay annual fees to keep your antivirus software up to date.
If you need support Apple has the best in the industry. Here in the US when I need help I get someone within 30 seconds on the phone that is local, isn't reading off a script and generally is knowledgeable. Over the years when I've had occasion to call my question is almost always handled on the first call. When I used to own PC's when I had to call support I dealt with someone that frequently was nice but didn't have the knowledge and I also had language barriers and had difficulty understanding. I know it was frustrating for me and must have also been frustrating for the engineer I was dealing with.
Remember specifications are just that and many times have nothing to do with the user experience. What I'd recommend is spending time with both platforms in a store and then decide for yourself which one best suits your style.
If you choose a Mac great, if you don't I hope you enjoy your Windows machine.

  • How to buy vouchers for Oracle PL/SQL Developer Certified Associate ?

I want to become Oracle PL/SQL Developer Certified Associate.
For this, I want to write 1Z0-007 (Introduction to Oracle9i SQL) and
    1Z0-147 (Program with PL/SQL) tests.
I went through so many posts in the forum, but I didn't get the required answers.
    Kindly reply my queries:
    1) Will clearing the above two tests will make me Oracle PL/SQL Developer Certified Associate?
    2) Should I purchase two separate vouchers for those two tests?
    3) Should I give both the tests one by one at the same time or can I give them on different days?
Please answer my questions. Or atleast guide me where can I get the answers?

    1) Will clearing the above two tests will make me Oracle PL/SQL Developer Certified Associate? These exams fulfill the requirements of the certification which should be awarded if you pass the exam. Even if you pass the exams you are not certified until you received confirmation from Oracle via a success kit or Certview that you are certified
    2) Should I purchase two separate vouchers for those two tests? In my opinion there is usually little advantage in buying vouchers; but you may have different situation with your particular situation. Vouchers also may go wrong on people from time to time. Probably the excpetion for vouchers being good is when discounted vouchers are offered as part of training.
    See: http://www.pearsonvue.com/oracle
    3) Should I give both the tests one by one at the same time or can I give them on different days?Best practice for ordinary mortals is probably to take exams on different days. However as you are choosing 1z0-007 and 1z0-147 and not the more modern choices of 1z0-051 and 1z0-144 I shall leave that to yourself

  • How to disable check for updates in sql developer 3.2

Is there a possibility to disable or remove the "Check for Updates" option in SQL Developer 3.2.2 version.
I have tried using the below AddVmMOption but it is not working
    AddVMOption -Dide.noextensions=oracle.ide.webupdate
    AddVMOption -Dide.cfu.autoskip=true

    Hi,
If you are referring to Help -> Check for Updates, I'm not certain if that is possible.
If you mean Tools -> Preferences -> Extensions, just uncheck the Automatically Check for Updates box. Doing that is standard procedure for improving the tool's launch performance.

  • Changing color for data in sql developer

I have recently seen some one have modified the setting in SQL developer to show certain color for the cells that have null values. Couldn't find where to set that property. Does anyone know how to default a color for a cell with null values in SQL developer?
    -app

Go to Tools|Preferences|Database|Advanced. There is an option to set the null value background color.

  • Query Results not coming for SELECT * in sql developer 3.1.07

VERY FRUSTRATING to use sql developer.
    In SQL DEVELOPER 3.1.07:
WHAT WORKS: select sequence# from v$archived_log
    WHAT DOESN'T WORK : select * from v$archived_log
You've got to be kidding me.
I wish I can show a screenshot, but can't in this forum. Here's my description:
When I run the query, in the bottom frame for Query Results, it just says: Executing: select * from v$archived_log in 0 seconds.
    Then there's no result grid.

Is this a 'manual' standby db? Are you using Data Guard?
Post the results for what Gary ask of running the queries in sql*plus. If those queries give the same result then this is NOT a sql developer issue.
Review the following thread and post back with what information in it applies to your use case.
Re: V$ARCHIVED_LOG returns no rows on manual standby
If you are using Data Guard you may want to cross-post in that forum.

  • Default path for scripts within SQL Developer version 3.2.20.09.87

I have SQL Developer version 3.2.20.09.87 and needed to know if the 'Set default path to look for scripts' be a UNC path?
    Thanks

I hadn't tried it but now I did and it worked.
I also tried setting the Utilities Export default file location to a UNC path and I was able to set it but when I try to go to it via the 'browse' button, it doesnt go to it. It does, however, use it when I export.
Also when I do File > Open, I'm not able to navigate to UNC paths via the 'Home' or 'Desktop' buttons on the left hand side of the window and am not able to navigate to a network location from the 'Locations' box.
Any ideas? I am on Windows 7.
    Thanks

Just downloaded the new Version of SQL Developer(1.2.1 build main:32.13)
from the TimesTen SQL Developer page.
    http://www.oracle.com/technology/products/timesten/timesten_sqldeveloper.html
Tried searching for updates as shown in 'How to Install the TimesTen Extension' viewlet, but found no TimesTen Extention.
Would someone please verify the extention is available?

The TimesTen extension is now available via 'Check for Updates'.
Please make sure you are using SQL Developer 1.2.1 Build 32.13. As with all SQL developer extensions you need to provide your OTN login id and password to download the files.

  • Large iTunes library on pc-should we switch to Mac

I have an iTunes library of 500 gigs on an external drive attached to a pc with a 2.6 pentium dual core processor , 4 gigs of RAM and a 64-bit operating system.  iTunes is sometimes very slow to react, sticks at times and even freezes up.  I am wondering if we need to beef up the pc with more RAM to alleviate these issues or just switch to a Mac with the 2,5 ghz processor and 8 gigs of Ram to ensure we can move properly through the musc library.  Any help is greatly appreciated.  iTunes also takes 30 minutes to load each time we launch.
    Please help

wow - I didn't know that about RAM.
right now am using a mirrored RAID array of 3 x 400 GB on a transintl RAID enclosure - although am on a single processor G5 PowerMac which, I have been told, does NOT make use of PCI-X, alas...
I have also come to the conclusion that (1) faster hard drives & RAID and (2) faster, more powerful processors can BOTH be a big help... but...
however the real problem is not the hardware, but the software - iTunes is a great program, but it was designed mainly for people to put music on their iPods & buy it from the iTunes story - it was NOT designed for people like me who are trying to manage a huge music archive with it - what is really needed is a new, improved version of iT - iTUNES PRO or SUPER iTUNES...
but for the time being, I think my best bet is to look into a Mac Pro - not that I can afford it - I have run out of ways to make my PowerMac G5 go any faster (it's RAMmed to the max!) -
so I am still curious - has anyone used a 500 GB library on a Mac Pro?
thanks for all the fast feedback!

  • Tutorial for Eclipse/Flex Compiler Development?

    Hello,
I cannot find any reliable information on setting up Eclipse with all the right plugins to modify the Flex Compiler.  http://www.darronschall.com/weblog/2005/08/setting-up-eclipse-for-flex.cfm  is too old, and the others are just unclear.
If anyone could give me a hand that would be great.
    - Eclipse version Flex SDK Developers are using.
    - Required plugins (I'm on a Mac 10.5)
    - How to run a sample Flex SDK Compiler project, or debug it or something, or at least just load it.
I have everything set up (eclipse installed, the flex source installed and ready according to the developer documentation).  But this last step is missing.  Thanks!

  • Announcement: OrindaBuild 5.0 Extension for SQL Developer 1.5.1

    Folks,
OrindaBuild is now available as an extension for SQL Developer 1.5.1.
OrindaBuild creates Java source code to run your existing PL/SQL. This is a non-trivial task and for large projects can consume hundreds on man hours as well as delay development.
OrindaBuild does roughly the same thing that JPublisher does, but writes human readable code, doesn't need SQLJ and doesn't require that you use oracle TYPE objects as parameters for records and arrays.
Another way of thinking of OrindaBuild is "We reach that parts of your application that Hibernate can't".
OrindaBuild is available as extensions for JDeveloper and SQL Developer 1.1. After an unreasonably long gestation OrindaBuild is now available as an extension for SQL Developer 1.5.1 The delay has been caused by us rewriting both the JDeveloper and SQL Developer extensions so that code base has now been unforked. We've also standardized the functionality with that of our recently upgraded Eclipse extension.
To install the demo select 'Help/Check for updates' and then use the 'Add' button to create an update center for Orinda Software using this URL:
    http://www.orindasoft.com/public/sqldev15Center.xml
    Functionality:
The demo version is fully playable, with the only limitation being that it expires after 1 month. You can install the demo multiple times.
In addition to generating Java to call PL/SQL it also allows you to create code to run any SQL statement and access database tables.
OrindaBuild generates code for PL/SQL procedures that take %ROWTYPE and Package Records as parameters. Generated code uses a library. If you buy OrindaBuild you get the source code for the library and end up with a 100% source code solution - i.e. there are no mysterious runtime binary dependencies.
    Limitations:
The extension does not work with versions of SQLDeveloper prior to 1.5.1 (build 5440). We expect you to buy a licence if you deploy generated code in a production environment.
    For more information see

It is possible that the patch has replaced you shortcut with one pointing to the version within the 11g home. Try running sqldeveloper directly from the executable in the 151 directory.

  • Import tnsnams.ora in SQL developer on Mac OS

Hi, I am moving from PC to Mac and am installing SQL developer on Mac OS. I want to import tnsnames.ora ( that I used in toad ) to SQL developer. I looked it up and everyone seems to say drop tnsnames.ora to /etc, sql developer will pick it up. However I don't have root access to /etc directory.
What can I do to import tnsnames.ora
    Thanks!

You can put tnsnames anywhere you like and specify it via the TNS_ADMIN environment variable (though the next problem you will have is ensuring that the SQL Developer process can see that variable). The standard location is in network/admin under your Oracle Client installation. The reference to '/etc' is to do with database servers. You can put your own files in /etc if you want using sudo (it's your Mac), but I'm pretty sure that would not help here.
However it's news to me that SQL Developer can even use TNS name resolution. I thought it was all JDBC. Are you sure?

  • Import or Convert Visio database diagram for SQL Developer Data Modeling

    Hi,
Would you please advise on how it would be possible to convert an existing Visio 2007 ERD diagram for import into SQL Developer Data Modeling?
I have tried to save the model as XML Stencil, Template and Drawing, but could not successfully import it into SQL Developer Data Modeling.
    Appreciate your input on this!
    Cheers!

Those are just drawing formats and don't contain any useful information about the datamodel. If you can generate ddl from the diagram you can import that, but visio is really just a drawing tool with partial data modeling addins.
