Should I upgrade my Macbook RAM, or go to PC laptop?

Hello,
I bought my 2GHz Intel Core 2 Duo 13" Macbook in mid 2008. Recently I replaced the hard drive (dropping the computer killed the original HD) with another 80gig. It currently has 1 GB of memory. I'm running Snow Leopard.
I used to do film editing on this machine for school when I got it, but no longer. Right now what I do mostly on it is play WoW (very often), use the internet and will be using Photoshop.
It has been quite laggy as of late while playing WoW, and while I realize this is also a Blizzard issue, as many mac users have the same complaints, I know that I should have more than 1 GB of memory. I have heard multiple things about whether or not 3 GB of memory is possible on the Macbook or not. I'd really like to upgrade my RAM before the new WoW expansion comes out, but my questions are:
1. Is it worth buying 2 GB of RAM to upgrade my machine?
2. Is 3 GB of RAM possible or necessary?
3. If neither of these options are a good idea, would be worth buying a PC laptop with 3 or 4 GB of RAM and a bigger HD for half the price of a Macbook Pro? (as a poor intern, I cannot afford to pay more than $600 for a computer).
Thanks for any suggestions.

Your MacBook may fetch more than you think since new MacBooks lack Firewire.
Go to Apple menu -> About This Mac -> More Info. Under the hardware description it should say a MacBook x,x value. 1,1 can only be upgraded to 2 GB. 2,1 can be upgraded to 4 GB, but only 3 GB would be usable, And the 3,1 and later can be upgraded to a full 4 GB.
A PC laptop would not be able to run Mac OS X. Furthermore, you'd have to repurchase a lot of software you are running on your Mac for the PC, or see if a crossgrade is available. It may be time to consider alternative software packages that are less expensive for your current Mac, or for a newer Mac if you are tight under budget, or start saving for a newer Mac.
See my FAQ*:

You may find a cheaper MacBook than you think you can.

Purchasing with the upgrades through Apple would add about $800 over the Black Friday deal at Best Buy.  Just looking for some advice if I will be satisfied with the based model.

All models will do what you want. Upgraded models will do it faster than the standard models.
Just why are you thinking of switching to a Mac?

For me, presonall, becasue the Mac will run OS X, while the windows machine will run, well, Windows.  Seriously, whenever given the option, I greatly prefer to use OS X over windows without hesitation.  I buy Apple hardware because I prefer OS X to Windows and have since the OS X public beta.  Apple hardware is very good quality, but so are many Windows PC (Lenovo IMO makes some great hardware, if picking a Windows machine).
I use windows at work because that's what they give me, but I'd not pick it if given the choice.

    Hi Chefjeegar
Yes that screwdriver kit has the #00 phillips screwdriver that you need to access the RAM and hard drive. You'll also need the Torx driver to change the hard drive. http://www.amazon.co.uk/LINDY-Computer-Technician-Precision-Torx/dp/B0000934GO/r ef=sr_1_1?s=computers&ie=UTF8&qid=1348072554&sr=1-1
For a good explanation about RAM look at the page on OWC http://eshop.macsales.com/shop/memory/MacBook/DDR2/
In the UK Amazon or eBay might be your best bet for cheap RAM but read the description and reviews carefully. For a little more expensive but with a better warranty is Crucial UK http://www.crucial.com/uk/
A good resource for working on your MacBook is ifixit.com http://www.ifixit.com/Device/MacBook_Core_2_Duo
Is your external hard drive formatted for Mac? To transfer your current hard drive I like the free application Carbon Copy Cloner. It makes a bootable copy of everything on your hard drive http://www.bombich.com/index.html Check that it's set up right by booting up from the external drive. Put the new drive in your MacBook, then format and partition the new drive. Then use Carbon Copy Cloner to transfer your OS back to the new drive.
Yes, you can put an SSD in the MacBook.

  • Early 2008 Macbook Pro Should I upgrade to 6gb ram and SSD?

In the last few months, I've entered the world of 64-bit computing. I learned that this now means that my Early 2008 Macbook Pro, that has been fantastic and flawless for 6 years, needs an upgrade or replacement. I'm hard-hard stuck on whether I should upgrade it or replace it.
    My current configuration is:
Processor  2.4 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo
    Memory  4 GB 667 MHz DDR2 SDRAM
    Storage 200 GB SATA Disk
I need to run OSX Mavericks and Windows 7 in VMWare or Bootcamp (I don't really like bootcamp).
    I am eyeing two upgrades
    1) Crucial 4GB Single DDR2 667MHz (PC2-5300) CL5 SODIMM 200-Pin Notebook Memory Module CT51264AC667
    http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B001RB21JY/ref=ox_sc_act_title_2?ie=UTF8&psc=1& smid=ATVPDKIKX0DER
    2) Crucial M500 240GB SATA 2.5-Inch 7mm (with 9.5mm adapter) Internal Solid State Drive CT240M500SSD1
    http://www.amazon.com/Crucial-2-5-Inch-adapter-Internal-CT240M500SSD1/dp/B00BQ8R M1A/ref=sr_1_10?s=pc&ie=UTF8&qid=1392961391&sr=1-10&keywords=ssd
My question is: Is it worth it for me max out my computer by upgrading again for $250? Will this hold me over for another 2-3 years, or should I look to replace?

Well, I have researched and researched and researched and come to a conclusion. I've compared many brand new replacement computers, and also reviewed my options for upgrading my computer. Upgrading to a new computer altogether, I have come across a few very attractive offers, but they're all in the $800+ price range.
I've decided that OSX Mavericks is my main issue. My early 2008 Macbook Pro was 100% perfectly sufficient for everything I needed it for when using OSX Snow Leopard. After the upgrade, VMWare Fusion runs like a sloth and everything else runs like a slug (maybe a slug that had a 5 hour energy...). Seriously. Just now, I am running Safari and MS Word while copying files to my backup drive. The beachball is all over the place, whereas the CPU is only at 15% use and RAM is at 3.97/4.00. I'm barely using the computer, and it's ridiculously hot and the fans are screaming.
First thing I'm going to do is 'upgrade' back to Snow Leopard to recover my RAM and regain the ability to effectively run my VMWare virtual machine. Then, I'm going to opt for the $100 upgrade to total 6GB of RAM and $150 upgrade to a SSD.

  • Can somebody tell me if I can upgrade my Macbooks RAM with the following...

I wanted to upgrade my 1 GB RAM to a 4 GB RAM. Will these upgrades fit into my Macbook2, 1? It's a 13" one. Memory doesn't typically come that way. It's almost always a base 2 value, and 1 GB is really 1,073,741,824 or 2 to the power of 30. 2 GB is really 2,147,483,648 or 2 to the power of 31. This is not the way disk drives are typically sold, although some of the newer solid state drives may be sold that way. Disk drives are sold with 1 GB = 1,000,000,000 bytes, where they guarantee at least that much capacity (could be more with enough extra capacity to allow bad sectors to be mapped out and still be at least the listed capacity). You'll notice that all single memory modules are sold as with base 2 memory capacity like 256 MB, 512 MB, 1 GB, 2 GB, 4 GB, etc.
The information that you can't install more than 3 GB is not correct. MacBook2,1 is one of the first generation Core 2 Duo machines. Apple only specs them as using up to 2 GB, but people have successfully installed 4 GB and reported that 3 GB (some even report 3.3) was used. The are supposedly minor performance benefits (memory interleaving) to using two identically sized modules in each slot; using 2x2GB in your particular machine supposedly gives a slight benefit for video performance.
MacBook2,1 means one of these machines:

    http://www.everymac.com/systems/apple/macbook/stats/macbook-core-2-duo-2.0-white -13-specs.html
    http://www.everymac.com/systems/apple/macbook/stats/macbook-core-2-duo-2.0-black -13-specs.html
This is Everymac's disclaimer about memory for your particular machine:
*Apple officially supports 2 GB of RAM, but third-parties have been "unofficially" able to upgrade it to 3 GB or 4 GB of RAM (it can hold 4 GB but cannot fully utilize the memory beyond 3 GB).
Other World Computing has test results including 2x2 GB used in a Nov 2006 1.83GHz Core 2 Duo MacBook (MacBook 2,1) and they got slightly better results in some areas, and slightly worse in others. The cost of getting 2x2GB shouldn't really be an obstacle these days.

I do a lot of design work using the adobe suites. Current MacBook 08 has core 2 duo 2ghz 2gig ram. I would get i7, 2ghz, 4gig ram. Is it a good idea?

Most definitely. It's time.  You will have to have the latest Adobe suite to run on Lion.

  • I'm considering getting a retina MacBook Pro, should I upgrade the RAM or the Storage?

I don't want to go over $1,800, so I can only upgrade to 16GB RAM with a 256GB SSD, or 8GB RAM with a 512GB SSD. I will be running a lot of VM's, so I was originally going to go for the first option, with 16GB RAM, but I heard that if you use more than 80% of an SSD's capacity, it degrades more quickly due to the way the wear leveling algorithms work. I'm intending to get at least 4 years of use out of this machine. In summary, which option should I go with? Thanks in advance!

    H.S.G.,
go with the RAM. A Retina MacBook Pro’s SSD can (in theory) be replaced if necessary; its soldered-in RAM can’t.

There should no problem in installing 8 GB RAM in your MBP.  Crucial is one of the best sources of RAM for Macs.  Now if you are so inclined, you can install 16 GB from OWC, the other reliable source for Mac RAM.

I have a 2008 version of the 13" MacBook Pro. It's recently been giving me issues as in slow browsing and quick battery drain. It also freezes frequently. Is it worth buying a refurbished 2012 version?  Should I go with MacBook Pro vs MacBook Air?  Mainly use for surfing, music and streaming.

Yes, refurbs are just like new and carry the same warranty as new. It will also have an optical drive and upgradable RAM and HD.
The Air is a bit thinner and lighter but has none of the features listed above.
I'd go for the 2012 MBP refurb.

Should I upgrade to Snow Leopard/ Lion using a MacBook Pro with 2.26 GHz Inetl Core 2 Duo Processor and 2GB Memory? Can my old macbook take it?

Yes. You should be fine with Snow Leopard, but Lion requires a minimum of 2 GBs of RAM. If you upgrade to Lion I would first upgrade your RAM to at least 4 GBs if your model supports it. Also, see:
How to Install OS X Updates Successfully
    A. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions:
Boot from your current OS X Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. Then select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the installer. Now restart normally.
If DU reports errors it cannot fix, then you will need Disk Warrior (4.0 for Tiger) and/or TechTool Pro (4.5.2 for Tiger) to repair the drive. If you don't have either of them or if neither of them can fix the drive, then you will need to reformat the drive and reinstall OS X.
    B. Make a Bootable Backup Using Restore Option of Disk Utility:
Open Disk Utility from the Utilities folder.
Select the destination volume from the left side list.
Click on the Restore tab in the DU main window.
Check the box labeled Erase destination.
Select the destination volume from the left side list and drag it to the Destination entry field.
Select the source volume from the left side list and drag it to the Source entry field.
Double-check you got it right, then click on the Restore button.
Destination means the external backup drive. Source means the internal startup drive.
    C. Important: Please read before installing:
If you have a FireWire hard drive connected, disconnect it before installing the update unless you will boot from this drive and install the update on it. Reconnect it and turn it back on after installation is complete and you've restarted.
You may experience unexpected results if you have installed third-party system software modifications, or if you have modified the operating system through other means. (This does not apply to normal application software installation.)
The installation process should not be interrupted. If a power outage or other interruption occurs during installation, use the standalone installer (see below) from Apple Downloads to update.  While the installation is in progress do not use the computer.
    D. To upgrade:
Purchase the Snow Leopard Retail DVD.
Boot From The OS X Installer Disc:
Insert OS X Installer Disc into the optical drive.
    Restart the computer.
Immediately after the chime press and hold down the "C" key.
Release the key when the spinning gear below the dark gray Apple logo appears.
Wait for installer to finish loading.
    E. If updating:
    Download and install update(s)
    Use Software Update, or
    Download standalone updater(s).

  • MacBook Pro often unresponsive in Mountain Lion. Should I upgrade to Mavericks?

Hi, I upgraded to Mountain Lion from Snow Leopard about a month ago. Since then, my MacBook Pro has often become unresponsive, giving me the spinning beach ball -- or doing nothing at all -- when I have just a few applications running. (Typically, these may be Mail, Safari, iTunes and sometimes Adobe Lightroom 5.) I have a 2011 MacBook Pro with a 2.7GHz Intel Core i7 and 4GB of factory-installed RAM. It was a snappy performer in Snow Leopard. I'm wondering now if I should try upgrading to Mavericks, and perhaps get a boost from the memory compression. Or will this potentially take whatever problems are slowing me down now and make them worse? Interested to hear your opinions, thanks.

Try booting into the Safe Mode using your normal account.  Disconnect all peripherals except those needed for the test. Shut down the computer and then power it back up. Immediately after hearing the startup chime, hold down the shift key and continue to hold it until the gray Apple icon and a progress bar appear. The boot up is significantly slower than normal. This will reset some caches, forces a directory check, and disables all startup and login items, among other things. When you reboot normally, the initial reboot may be slower than normal.
